“A lone bounty hunter...a mysterious land...and the fate of a federation!”   sonicthehedgeho..
You've just entered the domain of this planet specifically named Zebes, which is known to house creatures known as Metroids. As you look around the scenery of this place you already can tell that it’s not going to be an easy trip to victory, although; that doesn’t mean that you haven’t come prepared for the unexpected now. As before you were sent to investigate/destroy the main source of evil here, you’d already been equipped with a one of a kind power suit which aids you in many ways even some that you haven’t even learned yet. What could possibly be the root of despair that’s apparently located on this planet? Could it really be as dangerous as you were informed? Only one way to find out and that’s for you...Samus Aran to look towards the path of justice in order to prevail among what lays ahead of you!
Graphics: 7 out of 10
If there is one game which I could compare this games graphics to, it would have to be Super Mario Bros on NES. Whereas the graphics aren’t exactly as stunning as other games on the system like Mega Man or even Contra, however it still managed to pull my interest towards the game with its sinister looking theme and (for most of the game) its Aztec type looking scenery. My fondest memory of playing this game has to be when I made it to Kraid for the first time as when I saw him I immediately started laughing because he looked like a really goofy looking Bowser in my opinion, one thing I think they definitely could’ve tried improving was Samus’s Power Suit design since to me it doesn’t even look like a suit if you ask me. Either way I’d give the graphics an average rating meaning a 7 out of 10 for me.
Sound: 7 out of 10
Once again I don’t find the music to be as impressive as other games on the system but I do enjoy the music in this game better compared to its graphics. There are mainly 3 songs that you’ll hear throughout most of your adventure: Brinstar’s Theme which is where you are when you immediately start the game, and in my opinion is a very well fitting theme for the start to your adventure on Zebes with its sort of dark mysterious hero type of theme. The 2 other themes are: Tourian and Norfair, which are the other two main area’s that you’ll be venturing around in order to find and defeat Mother Brain. What’s funny about Tourain’s music to me is that it sounds like tetris music you know, all calm and everything even though this is supposed to be the last path until you reach the final boss. Norfair’s theme sounds the calmest out of all the songs in the game but also the strangest to describe because at least to me it’s a mix of a mysterious sounding with a puzzle game music sounding, I’d say if you’re looking for darker toned music as you would expect from the story in this game then I’d say play Super Metroid on SNES. The sound effects are okay for 1986 standards but they could’ve been much better so all in all I’d say the sound for Metroid earns a 7 out of 10.
Addictiveness: 8 out of 10
Let me state this immediately: “IF YOU STRONGLY DISLIKE PUZZLE/ADVENTURE GAMES COMBINED INTO ONE, DON’T PLAY THIS GAME.” I can’t stress this enough because this game is an even harder level of the certain puzzle aspect found in the Legend of Zelda on NES due to the fact that you have NO map in this game, “are there puzzles which require pushing blocks or defeating certain enemies?” nope but like Zelda you do have to venture around a lot while remembering where you’ve already been however; unlike Zelda as I described you have no way to track where you’ve been unless you hand draw on paper which places have already been checked or look up a map on the computer. Does all of this make it a bad game or a game that’s not worth playing? Absolutely not, in fact for people who enjoy games with a higher level of difficulty than most other games and the difficulty is fair and not cheap then those people will thoroughly enjoy this game. Although if the idea of not having a map has thrown you off course from wanting to play this game I can understand but let me tell you that you’ll be missing out on a lot of the fun that is left to be seen in this game. One of the most well-known reasons that people continue to play this game...over and over again is because of the different endings that you can achieve depending on how fast you can go and beat this game, what are the ending you say? Well you can’t expect me to tell you everything now can you, that would spoil one of the great joys of experiencing this game. Looking at everything I’d say the addictiveness in my opinion earns Metroid an 8 out of 10.
Story: 9 out of 10
You are Samus Aran a name that is seemed to be known by many across the Galaxian Federal Police Force to be one of the best members among the many that work there. Since this person known as Samus was so great the GFPF decided to send Samus to a planet known as Zebeth to destroy the life force of an enemy named Mother Brain. As you arrive on the land and enter the domain of Brinstar you notice deadly creatures walking around known as Metroids, with no time to waste you attack any of the enemies that lurk in your path. Along the way you’ll find power-ups for your suit including new beams and other weapons to help you progress through your adventure on this planet. So what are you doing sitting there behind the screen...the Galaxian Federal Police are expecting on the success of your mission! Mother Brain must be stopped at all costs; Failure was never an option to begin with when you accepted this dangerous mission! They could’ve made the story a little darker in my opinion but hey; you take what you can get right. So Metroid’s story in my books earns a 9 out of 10!
Depth: 7 out of 10
I believe that there are only 3 main areas in the game: Brinstar, Tourain, and finally Norfair as I described in my sound section of this review. It’s kind of hard to say how long it will take you to get through each section since it depends on if you have a good sense of direction or remember which places your character has/hasn’t already been to, so it could take from 15-20 min if you’re good at this game or it could take 45min-1 hour if you’re a beginner at this game and not so great at remembering where you’ve been or if you’re not good at this sort of Mario & Zelda combined type of adventure game. This game also unfortunately doesn’t have any other game modes except for the 1player mode, but there is a secret that will allow you to play the game with a different look which I will touch on right now. If you’re able to beat Metroid in less than 3 hours then you’ll get one of the most iconic endings in video game history, where your bounty hunter character Samus will discard the power suit revealing the player Samus to be a woman! This was a huge shock to many gamers since not many games involved a female hero. Also if you’re able to beat the game in under 2 hours (yeah I know, you need Sonic Speed) then you’ll be able to play through the game again, however this time she won’t be wearing her armor but instead just a dark pink leotard and her arm cannon. Nothing left so say here but give my score which will be a 7 out of 10 for depth.
Difficulty: 9 out of 10
As I’ve stated many times during this review this game at least in my eyes has a higher difficulty level than The Legend of Zelda, especially since there is no map that can be used. Unlike most other games though this game won’t use cheap tricks to kill you, and is completely fair with its level & enemy designs so if you die the fault lies directly upon yourself instead of the game which I appreciate since I know then that it was myself who had made the mistake. Many people that I’m acquainted with dislike Metroid for its level of difficulty but I say give it a chance and if you don’t like it then that’s fine, one complaint I see from a lot of people is that they dislike not being able to shoot in any direction that they want compared to how they would attack in let’s say Contra for instance. I actually like the level of difficulty in this game since I have to think instead of just running right through each area, so I’d say the difficulty earns a 9 out of 10......one final thing before we end this review, if you would like to play a Metroid game where you can shoot in any direction then play Super Metroid on SNES.
The bells on the pendulum have already begun to toll, as your adventure is nearing its ending. As the countdown to the detonation of Zebes has started, will you be able to help Samus return to safe ground in time or will she fall to the same fate as the death of Mother Brain? Only one way to find out and that’s to get your playing hands ready and begin this new-found space adventure. If you can accomplish this feat we will be forever in your debt!

Metroid   LegolasJJH
The original Metroid for the NES was one of the first games I ever played, so it holds a special place in my heart. The game became one of the biggest franchises and a monumental game to video game history. Today Metroids Protagonist Samus Aran is one of video games most recognizable characters and plays guest appearances in many video games including Super Smash Brothers games.
Because of nostalgia reasons I doubt I could rate this game anything short of perfect, but I could understand someone younger than myself not appreciating the greatness of this game due to the superiority of modern day games. I think though the success of the series and the fact the game makes so many "Best games" lists is a solid testament to why it receives such a good score.
You touch down on the Planet Zebes. Playing the role of Space Bounty Hunter Samus Aran your mission is to infiltrate the alien planet and eradicate the presence of a notorious alien species; The Metroid. Intel confirms that the planet is being run by the Space Pirate known as Mother Brain. Mother Brain and her army of space pirates plan to harness the powers of the Metroid's for evil and are a threat to the entire galaxy so must be eliminated.
Being a NES game the controls are fairly simple. Left and Right on the Dpad will control Samus's direction while pushing Up will aim your hand laser up. Pushing down will activate your suits Morph Ball ability once you've unlocked it (it should be the first thing you find in the game). Lastly, the A button is used to jump and the B button is used to shoot your laser or deploy bombs and missiles once they've become available.
GRAPHICS: 10
The graphics for Metroid are top notch for a game on the NES. The Planet Zebes is vast and includes multiple zones with differing themes. I personally enjoy the fire part of the planet known as Norfair. The enemy's of the game are unique and have become icons in the gaming industry. The only critique I could possibly give, but I feel like I say this about all NES games, is that I feel like the sprites for the characters could potentially be made larger.
SOUND: 10
Yet again a perfect score. The music is not only unobtrusive but is quite catchy and good. Just remembering back on it as I type the review brings one of the main tunes back in my head. The sound of one of the last stages as you near the Metroid nest and Mother Brain has become a staple in Metroid games and develops an eerie and scary feeling. Even something as simple as the sound Samus makes as she runs was done right.
ADDICTIVENESS: 10
You will not want to quit playing until you have completed the entire game. The game has many secrets, some of which are very well hidden, adding re-playability as you try to complete the game with finding every item. The game also contains multiple endings for more incentive to beat it again.
STORY: 10
I love the original story of Metroid and feel it is unique and original, unlike many other games that just rehash the same Medieval theme etc.
SPOILER ALERT!!! (I figure most everyone already knows this by now so it's not a big enough spoiler to exclude it from the review)
The game was one of the first major video game franchises to feature a female as the protagonist, and was one of the games original biggest plot twists, being revealed only in the games hardest ending.
When my older brother first introduced me to the game I laughed at the new terms this game brought to me like Space Pirate and Space Bounty Hunters. I think this brings a charm to Metroid that makes it a classic game for the ages.
DEPTH: 10
The planet Zebes is fairly large and complex and will take many hours to navigate. The game play is just so fun that you will want to continue playing for hours dodging and zapping enemy's to their death. This game is perfectly designed for the real hardcore gamers to challenge themselves to speed runs, adding that competitive edge as you compete with your friends.
DIFFICULTY: 10
This game is really hard. It took me years of playing it before I could even get close to beating it. (although like I said, at the time I first played Metroid I was probably only 3-5 years old.) If you don't cheat or get any help some of the secrets are near impossible to find and I doubt anyone that ACTUALLY played this game without knowing where any of the secrets previously were would complete the game while finding all of the secrets. Completing this game while achieving the best possible ending takes the skill of a hardcore gamer and is not something you could learn overnight. Like most games that are difficult, I would recommend small doses of the game, once you feel you are getting frustrated because you keep losing you might consider doing something else for a while.
OVERALL: 10
A game of this caliber that played such a big role in the history of video games gets nothing short of a perfect score from me. I can understand if someone didn't feel the game deserved such a rating but I think it needs to be taken into perspective the time that the game was released. The graphics and sound may have become antiquated but the game play holds up to this day. Most of the games upgrades and power ups would continue on to future Metroid games. Even the location of secrets and how they are found is a theme this game created that would carry on to future games. Metroid epitomizes video games to me and is one of the first games off the tip of my tongue for best video games of all time. Any video game enthusiasts reading this now, if you have never given the original Metroid a try, you need to proceed directly to Metroid's game page and start playing now.

Metroid   Kyle!
Now today, not 20 or 30 years Metroid is shunned, very few still like the game series that now has a crippled reputation... But we aren't focusing on the present in this review, we are looking into the past! Metroid was a classic platformer that is what some call "The platformer starter." It was one of a kind at it's time because there weren't as many platformers at the time (Most platformers were owned by Nintendo at the time, like Mario, Super Mario bros, Metroid, Legend of Zelda, and so on) so it was a unique game. I rated it a 10/10 for it's graphics because back then people would look at the NES, SNES (SuperNintendoEntertainmentSystem) , Atari, and alas the Gameboy (A portable Nintendo gaming product alike the Sega GameGear which my father once owned actually) were so amazing at the time. The game was pretty addictive and made my want to play it just like when I was 7 and I first got my dad's old Sony PS2 gaming system in Alaska (Come on, it's Alaska, it was Winter, that was what got me hooked on gaming) and my dad gave me his copy of Jak and Daxter The Precursor legacy (Another great platformer, made by Naughtydog) . The game wasn't that hard with me being a platformer fan (I have the Jak and Daxter HD collection on my PS3 as well as Littlebigplanet 1 & 2) I loved the game and found myself using the VGBA (VirtualGameBoyAdvance) emulator a lot when my internet was down and couldn't get on "the Board."  (Wow I really got off subject) Now if I'm ever asked:"Hey Kyle, I wanna try platformers out. Know any on 'The Board' that are good?" And I will say:"Metroid...." (EDIT: I accidentally forgot to add something so I decided to edit this and add it: Metroid also features a huge shake-up that isn't common during the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) era.. It was... A FEMALE HEROINE... Yeah that's right I said a female heroine... *Gasp* )
Sincerely Kyle Parker Griffith,

the m night shyamalan of classic sci fi adventure   bsnowotter
verall graphics sound addictiveness story depth: difficulties
The game on the Nintendo Entertainment System was I believe one of their adventure series of games when the system was first starting out, and as amazing as this game is, a lot of what makes it great is very commonplace nowadays and so in some ways Metroid might look sketchy from a modern prospective  particularly when you take into account the game has some annoying aspects, so to look past the Flaws and appreciate the good in the game it helps to have a historical perspective and keep in mind all the cool things the game does that the game was kind of the first to do.  Also it helps to be patient because the game is best moments are deep in the game and at the end of the game so the game really starts you out with more of the mundane stuff like the critters the crawl along the walls and everything.  But I'm getting ahead of myself.
Metroid is this side- scrolling non-linear action adventure games set in a spooky scifi universe whercreepy are completely alone except for creepy critters and evil monster space pirate alien things.  The protagonist is very noteworthy because of this crazy twist ending that you learn about them that by now Nintendo fans probably already know but at the time this game came out all you really knew is that it's a mysterious bounty hunter character with a suit of armor and arm cannon and they can shoot missiles an upgrade their fire power and morph into this little ball that drops bombs which is really freaky and weird an innovative.  At the time, being able to progress not just left to right but then right to left and UP and DOWN was kind of a big deal.
Graphics
The graphics in Metroid a good because the main character animates very well there's a great variety of creepy crawly critters and monsters and evil space pirates but even more than that the best part about the graphics is that the diversity of settings some of them pretty creepy help to keep things interesting, they mark the territory so its clear when you are in a new neighborhood, and the setting really establishes the creepy sci fi atmosphere with lava pits teeming with fire breathing monsters and such.
Sound the sound in Metroid is amazing, this sound effects are numerous and everything you do has an awesome sound effect to go along with it that sounds appropriate to what it should be and even actions that you would think might have an annoying sound effects like the ScrewAttack that happen all the time, even those actions are accompanied with a sound effects that does not get old or annoying it actually sounds cool everytime you hear it so that's good sound effects design. The music is completely amazing the soundtrack by the legendary hip Tanaka has been remix 10 remix to this day, the musical tracks are spooky and atmospheric and even things like teleporting into existence in the beginning of the game or everytime you find an item there is just the coolest atmospheric little tune iconic is the word you would use to describe it, the music in this game is great, and it's important that the music is great because when you're just wandering around the atmosphere is very vital.
Addictive miss
This game is very addictive, the unknown the exploration diving into the abyss it's all very fun and in order to power up your character and fight the secrets especially if you don't cheat and just go straight to all the cool stuff is very rewarding to look in every nook and cranny undefined a secret passageway end with to be rewarded with one of the coolest items in the game. I don't want to get flat spoilers but the best items in this game are hidden behind not one but off in like 2 or 3 secret passageways so you have to find them all to leave your way to the hidden corners of the game where the best stuff is.
This is a good section to talk about one of the annoying part of the game, which is that it's very unforgiving if you become low on stuff there is no way to instantly get full missiles or full energy so if you are unfortunate enough to die or use your missiles for example on the enemy's who did not die unless you hit them with a lot of power such as a missile you may find yourself in a position torn between do I fight enemies over and over and grind for power ups and recharge my huge number of missiles to a time in a very boring get away or do you just quit the game and start over from scratch because sometimes it feels like either would be equally quick it's ridiculous how slow it is to grind and get items and that's why in the sequels to this there are statins where you can recharge your energy and recharge your missiles and if there was some kind of feature like that it would have been good especially since the only way to get a password is to kill yourself so unless you're going to leave the game running for long periods of time, you're going to have to grind her energy or missiles because you'll have to deliberately kill yourself if you want to get a password simple as that. This is one of the aspects of the game that has an age so well it's really a flaw in the game design in my humble opinion.
Story
The story of this game is pretty bare bones not too many plot development say anything but I would say that the story is still good because it sets up the atmosphere and in some ways finding new locations new enemies new space pirates qualifies as a plot twist or plot development so in the way that video games can tell stories nonverbally just showing this creepy adventure of this science fiction hero person I'd say the story is solid but by modern standards they could have thrown in some more crap although be careful what you wish for because some people complain when they talk your ear off and games like Metroid Fusion on the Gameboy Advance, if you're looking for more story by all means check out one of the sequel such as that one.
Depth difficulty
The depth of difficulty of this game go hand in hand both are great isady because the more you explore and go into the depths of the game the easier the game becomes because your character gets more powered up you learn to lay out if you're smart you might make a map in less you have a really good memory for where everything is so I'd say that the Dept is very good it's very deep and once you beat the game you have the option of going back to get a better ending they always want you to speed up your time dad speed X if you see a speed right of this game is amazing because it's really challenging to try to beat yourself to get innovative ideas okay what route do I take this the fastest to beat this game it's very rewarding to try to beat your time and the final battle is pretty difficult just surviving it is quite a challenge too.
In sum, check out this great sci fi classic or one of its many sequels on vizzed!!

A Different Type of Nintendo Game Similar to a Popular Movie   luigi25

Metroid is another classic, old school NES game released sometime in 1986 or 87. It is an action/shooter type of game that is kind of like a combination of Mega Man and Legend of Zelda. It focuses a lot on exploration, but you also get to shoot at enemies and find weapon upgrades along the way. You control Samus Aran as she travels through a space station on the planet Zebes. This game has a totally different storyline/characters than any of the other Nintendo games from the late 80s and early 90s. I felt like they copied a lot of these concepts from the movie "Aliens" that was in theaters around this time. Metroid was often forgotten about, and I'll admit it feels like it does lack a lot compared to The Legend of Zelda. Although, it was only the first game in the series.

Graphics 6/10: Metroid is another one of those old NES games that isn't that great looking of a game. The sprites have seen a little bit of an improvement over games like Super Mario Bros. and Legend of Zelda. However, the backgrounds are just plain boring and uninteresting. It's basically just the same black background in every area of the game! Even though the sprites are an improvement, they still don't look good either. The first Metroid game suffers from a lot of the same problems that many of these early games had. I'm sure the 8-bit NES couldn't produce games that were very attractive at the time. Just like with all of these games from the 80s, I still can't rate the graphics of Metroid that high.

Music 8/10: This first Metroid game has some songs in it that are very catchy and memorable. Although, many of them are pretty generic. The Brinstar theme is pretty bland, and the Norfair theme is even worse. Ridley's theme is okay, but the themes for Kraid's hideout and the opening/closing songs are the main tracks that really stand out to me. The soundtrack is a mixed bag, but Metriod does have some music that will stick with you. There were better sounding games on the system, but I guess the music of this game is still decent. Unlike in The Legend of Zelda where every song was catchy as hell, Metroid's soundtrack mostly consists of okay songs with only one or two that I remember being that great.

Gameplay 10/10: The gameplay of Metroid is the strongest part of the game. Even though the music and graphics may not be as great as Zelda, the level design is almost as good. I did enjoy playing Zelda more because of the way you had to buy items where you needed Rupies in order to buy them. Metroid doesn't encourage players to collect money like that game did, but there is still a lot of exploration to the layout of this game. You'll need to find weapon upgrades in order to make progress with the game, but you don't need Rupies in order to get them. In Metroid, you just have to find them which doesn't encourage players to explore the levels as much, but you'll still need to hunt down a strategy guide or walkthrough to find them!

There are still a lot of puzzles to solve in this game, there just aren't as many like in Zelda. At first, you'll have no clue as to where to go or what to do, and that's where a guide is needed. Even after watching walkthroughs of this game, I still have some trouble memorizing the right path and weapon order to go in. That's the whole appeal of this game, and it only gets easier the more you do it. Not only that, but just like with Zelda, Samus picks up health, missiles, and can do more cool moves after finding secret areas located throughout the game. My favorite move is the screw attack because it is a much easier way to kill some of the tougher enemies.

Just like with Zelda, you get to keep everything you collect along the way even if you die. All your moves, weapon upgrades, and missiles are still there, but you will have to kill enemies in order to replenish your health. You don't even have to go back that far if you do get a Game Over. Metroid is a game where players still find themselves progressing and moving forward, and the game just keeps giving you more prizes with the more progress you make. However, in this first Metroid game there aren't as many rooms and areas to explore. You're mainly just re-playing the same parts of the game and backtracking in order to find things, but it's still pretty satisfying.

Metroid puts most of its emphasis on figuring out where to go and in what order to do it in. The way in which it becomes less tedious and time consuming after several playthroughs also gives you an incentive to play this game again. It isn't as big as a game like Legend of Zelda, but there is still a lot to explore in Metroid and like with that game it only gets easier the more you play and memorize the proper order in which to grab everything. I hardly even need a guide to play this game anymore because of how the layout of the areas just seem to stick with me.

Story 9/10: I thought the storyline for Metroid was something different from any of the other games of that time. It was the first time the main character was a female bounty hunter dressed in a heavily armored spacesuit equipped with a gun used to kill aliens. The plot of the game is that a bunch of Space Pirates have taken control of a space station on the planet Zebes. The pirates plan on creating Metroids (jellyfish-like creatures that grab hold of living beings and kill them by sucking up all their energy) to destroy all the life on Zebes. The Galactic Federation sends a bounty hunter by the name of Samus Aran to break into the space station and destroy the pirate's Mother Brain.

In order to defeat Mother Brain, Samus has to explore the station in order to find upgrades for her weapon and spacesuit. She also has to defeat Ridley and Kraid who are two aliens that are protecting the Mother Brain. Like the title for this review says, the plot of Metroid is a different type of game, but it is similar to the movie "Aliens" which was released around this time. Nintendo does sort of copy the movie, but this is still a great idea for a video game. I did find it more creative and enjoyable than the plot of the first Super Mario Bros. game, but (like with everything else) not quite as original as Zelda because of the way they borrowed a lot elements from the "Aliens" movie.

Content 9/10: This Metroid game has a fairly decent amount of content to it, but it isn't that impressive compared to some of the later games. From what I've heard, Super Metroid had more going for it. With this game you only have about 5 different areas that you spend a good deal of time playing and backtracking through in order to find upgrades, missiles, and energy tanks. Metroid for the NES includes: Brinstar, Norfair, Ridley's Hideout, Kraid's Hideout, and The Final Area with Mother Brain. There is only about 2 hours worth of content and gameplay to this Metroid game. It's not that short of a game, but there still isn't that much to it either.

Difficulty 6/10: In some ways, this Metroid game is easy to play, and in other ways it is hard. It's an easy game if you have everything memorized and know what to do. If you don't know where to go, I feel like you can't play it. In 1987, they did have strategy guides and maps in Nintendo Power magazine. Nowadays, you'd go online and look it up or go to YouTube and find a good walkthrough video. This is another similarity to Zelda. The main objective is to figure out where to go, and that is impossible without some kind of map or walkthrough. Once you do that, this game is pretty easy with all the energy and weapons you can collect.

Samus can take a lot of damage before dying and getting a Game Over except for at the beginning when she doesn't have much energy collected up. Even if you die, you get to keep all your missiles, special attacks, and it is pretty easy to collect energy in order to build your stock back up. The hard areas take some practice, but I feel like as long as you keep playing you'll beat them too. If you know what to do, Metroid is an easy game, and after a few playthroughs you'll find yourself needing to rely on a walkthrough less and less. I think Metroid has about the right amount of difficulty without becoming too hard unlike with Mega Man. There is more attention put on problem solving instead of difficult platforming and enemies.

Overall 8.4/10: My final grade for Metroid on the Nintendo Entertainment System would be about a C+. I find this game and Legend of Zelda to be very similar, but Metriod doesn't have as much to it with the soundtrack, gameplay, creative plot, or amount of content/levels that that game had. I do like how it is easier to play than Mega Man after you learn the ropes. After finding a good walkthrough and memorizing it, I happen to really enjoy playing this game quite a lot, and that's the game's strongest area. The weakest part is still the game's graphics, soundtrack, and the way the idea for the game copies a lot from the movie "Aliens". It is a different type of Nintendo game, but it still has a lot of similarities to that movie!

The Battle of Sci-Fi and Bounty Hunter (retro edition)   darthyoda
Battle your way as Samus, the legendary Bounty Hunter, through the planet Zebes. Fight mini-boses to get to Mother Brain, the evil brain of Zebes. You go through deep caverns, upgrade your weapons, fight odd creatures, and even get to struggle with Metroids... But, what makes this retro game so revolutionary? It's graphics, no. Not its story, and also not how much you can do. It is one of the first games you could go back and forth through the levels... You have to start in an unconventional direction to even get past the first door. This makes it a game all true retro fans should play!
Graphics, the graphics are relatively average for NES, I mean they couldn't do much with it back in the 80's... But none the less, this game has good visuals. It isn't a game that focuses too much on this part, as it had other goals, and the programming needed to create more detailed graphics weren't available... Although it has good graphics, it misses many of the things that true Metroid fans have come to love. It doesn't have the grappling hook, nor does it have a map, which makes the game much harder. Considering you have to go back and forth between rooms, and even parts of the level, this makes the game very hard, but I am getting ahead of myself.
This game gets an 8/10 because the graphics aren't that stunning. (Normal Graphics for 1980's games.)
Sound, the game has a good soundtrack, but it gets annoying after a while of hearing the same thing over and over. The sounds were very well done, but because of the seemingly uncreative soundtrack, I gave this a low rating. But if you think about it, back in the day, even Mario's theme could get annoying... So really there is little difference between this, and a more popular game... But as you play this for a longer time, it gets a little more repetitive than Mario...
Because of the repeating soundtrack I gave this part a 6/10. which is rather low for a game that I enjoyed playing.
Story, this game has little story from what you can tell, but it seems common... I gave it the highest score because of the continuation of it's foundation. It built on the story, and made it a well known game franchise. It laid the foundation for you nemesis, Mother Brain. I won't spend very long here, because of the little story in this game, but if you play the other games, you can get an idea about the story.
For the other games which had GREAT story, this gets a 10/10.
Depth, there is much to do in this game, you can find missile "tanks" which gives you more missiles to shoot. You have the freeze ray, and many other things to upgrade. Mostly the stuff in here, has been a common part of the series after this game, although the sequel to this, greatly upgraded the arsenal of Samus. If it weren't for the lack of a map, this game could be much better. You can do much, but it is hard to keep track of what room you were just in. Which kills the exploring mood. Not to mention that there is an invincibility code... Which makes exploring completely useless.
Although you have much to do, it doesn't really feel fun to do it, and for those reasons it only gets a 6/10
Difficulty, in and of itself, the game isn't hard. It is because of the limited shooting angles, and the no map part that this game is hard. Both of these problems were addressed in the remake of this that Nintendo made years later. But still the game wasn't actually hard, it was just frustrating.
Because of the lack of a map, this game gets a hard rating of 8/10.
Overall, a good game, but it takes time to beat, which makes it a patience test, rather than an enjoyable experiance. It is a good game, but the remake proved the better version.

Metroid Review   Marcmoney
Overall - 8.8
Metroid on the NES is kind of a good game to play.  Metroid has been around for so long now and it still is fun to play the games that are old.  This game is very interesting and it is a good classic game.  When I played it, it was so much like Mega Man and Kid Icarus put together, mostly Kid Icarus because it plays like a maze.  The game play is fun.  I guarantee you that this game is fun and it just never gets old.
Graphics - 8
The graphics are good, but Metroid herself looks funny.  You can tell how Metroid looks like with the orange suit and other things, but the orange on Metroid is a little too bright, just saying.  The effects looks similar to Mega Man and it is just what you would expect on an NES game.  It is very good for an NES game.
Sound - 9
The sound is very good.  It has songs that sound just like Metroid.  It is amazing how it would sound very good during the game play.  There is only one song that plays it when you are not around a boss and it can get annoying, but still, it sounds like Metroid and some may enjoy listening to it over and over again.  The sound effects are good too.  It is not annoying or stupid, it just sounds right in the game.
Addictiveness - 7
The game is fun.  I would play it some of the time when I have nothing to do.  Like I said, it does not get old.  Sometimes I would get tired of it because I would not know where to go and it is just a waste of time trying to find out what to do and where to go, but other than that, it still does not get boring.
Story - N/A
There is no story in this game.  When you turn on the game, it will bring you to the title screen to press start and it would say start new game or continue and it would just bring you right into to the game, not telling you anything about the game or the point of it.  What I think the story is, it could be Metroid trying to defeat Ridley.  That is all I think the point of the game is, but there could be more about it.
Depth - 7
The game does not have many things in the game.  It is like Mega Man from the start, you just start the game or continue where you left off.  Then it would play as Kid Icarus where you can go around finding upgrades for you that you can use during the game to help you.  Another thing about this game is that when you want to choose which weapon you want to use, your character would change colors.  That is what I like a lot about this game.  That is basically everything in this game cause there is not much you can do, it is just like Kid Icarus.
Difficulty - 5
The game is okay to play.  The enemies are not that hard, but to know where you need to go can take a long time to do.  What sucks is that when you are in a big level and it you get to the other side of the level, if you go back, the enemies will come back to life and it can be a pain in the butt to defeat them or avoid them all.  Other than that, the game is still fun.
Wrap Things Up...
Metroid can be fun and it can be awesome to play cause of the music and the game it is played.  I highly recommend trying this game out if you have not already.  It is fun and you can try playing the other Metroid games cause at first I thought that these games would not be so fun, but when I tried them out, I really seemed to like them a lot.  I am surprised the way the games are nowadays. :)

Metroid NES Review   billythekidmons..
Well this is what many consider to be a classic on the NES and frankly I can see why. Let’s see if you can guess the game. You can go left. You jump and have an arm cannon. You play as a girl but you do not know until the end! If you were not aware the game that I just described is the original Metroid. So without further ado let’s get into it.
I am going to start off this review by saying there is actually a story. While it is minimal it is a story none the less I can actually tell you all the text that you get as far as story goes. Here is the text:” Emergency Order. Defeat the Metroid of planet Zebeth and destroy the Mother Brain the mechanical life vein. Galaxy federal police. M510.” So from the first game you are already a bounty hunter and you are already going out to kill some of those Metroid as well as your enemy that is Mother Brain. The after you beat the game you get this message: “Great!! You fulfilled your mission. It will revive peace in space. But, it may be invaded by the other Metroid. Pray for true peace in space!” That is cool and all and for an NES game that is actually a good chunk of story. They left the story open and they do want to just because they do keep it open for the second game. I heard that there is quite a bit more story in the game manual especially for the NES. I read through that it and it was actually fairly interesting. Though this is a game review so I must say that the story here is ok. I have to say that it is better than having no story at all which is the norm for most of the NES games of the day.
The game looks ok I guess. There are a lot of graphics glitches that take away from the experience by quite a bit. There will be times that if an enemy is on the left side of the screen and you kill it some of its body explosion can come up on the right side. This seems really cheesy for today’s standards and almost a bit sloppy. Though when you think of how revolutionary the game was you have to ignore these little flaws. Also another weird glitch that you get is if you shoot out the block that an enemy is on instead of falling or something he will spin like a wild man. This is really humorous and kills the dreary atmosphere that the game tries so hard to make. I laugh when this happens because it is really funny. The other thing that is bad about the graphics is the fact that they slow down by a lot. This is awful if you run and there are a few enemies on screen if you so much as jump or shoot your gun the game goes into pretty much bullet time and you want to shut the game off. Really detracts from the experience as well. Other than that the game looks really good with different environments some silly looking bosses as well as a few enemies. I think that the environments look the best it really makes it feel dark and spooky that is if the glitches do not ruin that for you.
The game sound really good. That is until you notice that you better like the tunes and sound effects because you are going to hear them over and over and over. They did not write all that much music for this game which means the music gets very repetitive very fast. I quickly grew tired of the main world theme and the pew pew of the gun. I left the main world just so I could get the tune out of my head. I did and then I died over and over which also annoyed me with its sound effects. The game sounds good as a whole though it is just the fact that you better fall in absolute love with everything that comes out of the speakers because you will hear it again and again and again and again, you get the point. Very repetitive but on it’s own the sound department is good. I have also heard that the Famicom got more tracks as well as clearer tracks I think that would be nice to hear. Since the music in this game is very bleepy and bloopy.
This game is not really all that addictive. I honestly did not really want to come running back to it just because I got lost almost all of the time. I also found that many of the bugs and the music kept me from really just enjoying the game for what it was, a 2D adventure. Though this does not mean that you want to play it over and over again or that you can not put it down. You can put it down quite easily and is enjoyable in short bursts if you want to enjoy it at all. I have to say that out of really addictive games this is not on my list not even close.
One of the reasons it is not that addictive is it is really deep. I am a completionist by most games standards, I just want to beat the game and get everything. I want to play the game and see all of the tricks and everything the game has to offer. But this game is SO deep that it is almost mind boggling. There is a flaw to this depth though, instead of running around enjoying yourself, you have no idea where you are. You have no map and really it is not a lot of fun because of this fact. You are going to get lost and therefore are going to get mad at the game for not giving you any idea of where you are or where to go. This game does not hold your hand at all. In fact it is like playing hide and go seek with everything. Normally in other Metroid games I want to find everything and see everything and kill everything, though that was not the case here. You have no idea of where to go or where to get anything and it is really frustrating to be all on your own relying on guesses of where to go just to die because the game does not want you to go that way with you current powers. That really cuts deep because you will die a lot. Though you might want to explore the world as it is very large. Just look up a map and you will know what I mean. The part that makes the game feel a little bit smaller is the recycled rooms which happens a lot of the time and feels really cheap. These also help you get lost thinking you are going back the way you came when really you took a wrong turn. If you want it there is many hours of exploring to be had, though it is very basic.
The game is really not all that hard. Then again the difficulty matters fully on the fact that you grab something from somewhere if you want to live. If you are not into collecting stuff then you will live easily though if you are not into doing that then you are going to have to be super lucky and skilled to win. The game also has a bunch of really cheap death traps for you to go into. There is a section that if you fall into the lava you will have to wait until you die and you will never get out otherwise, ever. The game over all feels really cheap when it comes to how hard it is. Especially the flying things, if you do not have the screw attack good luck killing them. They will throw you into the lava and like I said that is hard to get out of in the first place and if you are low health you will die! I also hated how if you exit out the door you will get hit by anything still coming toward you. That is not even fair as you can not defend yourself from these attacks.
All in all Metroid on the NES is not that great. The game is a kind of fun game to play at times but I guess that it is just not a game for me. I do have to say though I appreciate what it did for the industry and I do like the series as a whole. This one just feels far to basic for me to have all that much fun with it. To tell if the game is right for you enter in some cheats that are not hard to find and then play. If you like what you see then, you can go ahead and give the game a whirl. If you do not like what you see then, close the game up and do not play it again. The game does not get any better than the cheats. So here is my final run down.
Graphics: 6 – They look good for the most part. I do have to dock of for the graphics glitches just because they look really weird to me and they are fairly laughable when you see them .
Sound: 5 – The game sounds pretty good and I like a lot of the themes in the game but I have to say that they get really repetitive throughout the game. I ended up muting the music because of the fact it loops so many times.
Addictiveness: 4 – This game is not really addictive at all. You feel like the game is cheaping you out a lot of the time and that is not what I call fun or addictive game play. I like the exploration but it is far to easy to get lost.
Story: 7 – There is a story, not a really in depth one or great “transration” but there is a story, end of story.
Depth: 9 – One of the deepest games on the system. You will probably not want to go through all of it because it is not all that fun to do so.
Difficulty: 10 – The game is hard in a really cheap way. I felt like I deserved to live for almost every one of my deaths. That is not how a game should work and it is really annoying when you are almost to the final boss with full health and it is all taken away.
Overall: 6.7 – Not a really great game. I have to say that most of the people that rate this high have to look at it without nostalgia glasses on. Looking at this game and the others in the series this game is not even worthy of the title Metroid. Feels cheap and overall is not really fun at all. I have to say I was disappointed in this one as this was my first play through. The cheats made if the only fun that I got out of the game and that was only fun to mess around with for a little bit.

Metroid (NES) Review   thetotherguy93
Overall: 8.4
Metroid is a fun and addicting adventure / shooter game from the late 80's published by Nintendo. you venture through a distant planet collecting new items and killing enemies.
Graphics: 7
As far as 8-bit NES graphics go, Metroid has great graphics that really set the dark atmosphere. the  landscape is very detailed as well as the enemies. though sometime you do get tired of looking at that blank space in the background.
Sound: 7
Nintendo NES wasn't known for great sound capabilities. Those loud or scratchy beeps can be a pain to hear sometimes. Apart from that, the music is wonderful, catchy, and set the dark tone that Metroid is supposed to make.
Addictiveness: 9
Metroid is very fun and addicting because you are always exploring new places, earning new power-ups, and fighting new enemies. you are never disappointed. you might find yourself playing this for hours, continuously, getting stronger and defeating the 3 bosses.
Story: 7
If waiting at the title screen the story will appear. your character, Samus aran, is supposed to venture through planet zebeth to fight the space pirates who are holding the metroids captive. you deafeat, kraid and ridley, and their great leader, mother brain. there is not much effort put into it but still, it has a story.
Depth: 10
Metroid might just be the longest game up to its time. you explore the caverns of the humongous plantet zebeth. the game is separated into five worlds: brinstar, the blue rocky world, norfair, the fiery world, kraids base, ridleys base, and tourian, the main space pirate base. you collect about 10 powerups, not including the dozens of missile or life expansions. again, LONGEST GAME up to its time.
Difficulty: 8
Metroid ranks high in difficulty.Enemies that fly at you, drop from the ceiling, or have lots of health can be a pain to kill. it is mandatory to be careful not to fall in to the lava pits or they will take a huge chunk of your health. it also sucks that you only start with 30 health (out of 100).

Metroid on nes   jlh
Overall: I gave this game a 9.5 because of the all around good things too offer from this platform. Nicely drawn characters, detailed graphics and interesting bosses. This game got all around good views from me. It is a fun game and to me has good replay value.
Graphics: 8, the graphics are okay for an older game, the colors and the characters are nice because they change with different levels. The back ground has nice detail. The ending has nice graphics and all types of enemies or different colors.
Sound: Metroid gets a 9 for the sound, a high score, I think the music set the mood for the game. The sounds fx are good , you  know when you get to a different level and you can tell by shooting something if your doing damage or not.
Addictiveness: Another high score! With the items you have to find or the battles you must fight to beat the game it has a fun replay value. Plus it's a jump around shooting platform game blasting aliens.
Story: Story gets an eight, original characters and bosses is what makes this game great. I would have gave it a stronger rating, it has a typical good guy or er... anyways bad aliens theme.
Depth: The depth of this game gets a 9. Takes a while for the begginer to figure out it can be a maze some times and what item to get to proceed in the game. Plus with the multiple endings you might want to play more than once!
Difficulty: This game is pretty difficult for beginners. Having to build your energy and figure out enemy patterns can get difficult. The end can get frustrating but it is beatable if you are prepared.

metroid review   megametroidmario
In this game, Metroid, the graphics were perfect! The color of Samus Aran's suit would depend on wether she's using missiles or beam shots and wether if she has the Varia Suit or not. The sound was perfecter than perfect because it was more epic than the newer game with the brinstar theme sound of this game! This is also the case with tourian because it felt like you had to fight your way to the battle against Mother Brain and fightyour way to escape the tourian before it has self-destructed along with brinstar, norfair, kraid's and ridley's lair. Because of sound and graphics the addictiveness is high since its very fun to play. The story is only shown if you do not press "start" soon enough, and its only text from the Galactic Federation police giving Samus a mission to destroy Mother Brain with Kraid and most importantly, Samus's archnemisis, Ridley. With only her power suit!!!

BOMBS_ MISSLE
SCREW_ ATACK_

(Yes it's in all caps)

You start with 111 missles, the Ice Beam, Bombs, and 4 energy tanks.

You start with the ball, but can go fetch another one.

You don't have the Long Jump boots, but they aren't around to pick up.

The missle door to the long beam is open, but you haven't collected it yet.

Kraid and Ridley's statues have been activated(as well as the door to them opened), and you can get into Tourian. However, they aren't dead yet and can still be killed if it tickles your fancy.

Mother Brain can also fail to show up at all, however, if she is there you can scroll back and forth to make chunks of her sprites dissapear until the way is cleared. The text about getting the heck out will be there, but will be brown in the space that is usually occupied by MB. At any rate, you'll be able to leave at your convenience, without a timer. All but a couple Zebetites will have flown the coop, too.

Since you don't have the LJ boots available to you, you can't get the Varia.

Other misc. missle doors throughout the planet will be opened.

Glitch: Climb up Walls
On most levels with the doors you shoot to cause them to open you can use a door to climb up many many walls/levels above. Simply shoot the door and stand with the front 1/2 of Samus wedged where the door will reform. After you are partially ''sealed'' by the door just quickly tap up and down on the control pad. You will slowly climb up the wall. It is possible to get stuck while using this trick.
Morph Ball Double Jump
Turn into the Morph Ball, and slide off a platform or any other surface that allows Samus to stand in the air as Morph Ball. While in mid-air, press UP, and Samus will now be standing on her feet without any ground below her (She will be doing this still in mid-air), then quicly press ''A'' to perform an jump from the standing position you were placed. This trick will only work as long as Samus's sprite is stationary, this means that if you hit the D-Pad from you standing position, you will not be able to Morph Ball Double Jump.
Skip Kraid and Ridley
You have to have gone far enough to get the Ice beam. Now go to the room where the bridge needs to be formed and there's the statues of Ridley and Kraid. Before you enter that room, have the winged enemy chase you and hit you as you are going through the door.
If done correctly, the enemy follows you into the next room. Simply freeze him and use him as a stepping stone to get across the gap - without beating Ridley or Kraid. You can theoretically beat the game in under 20 minutes by using this glitch.
Play as Suitless Samus Beat the game in under 2 hours, and then at the password screen press 'Start'.
Quick end
Any time in the game you need to quit fast press start on Controller one , Then press Up and A on Controller two at the same time. This code will end your game and go to the password screen.

Jordanv78 07-09-15 - 01:32 PM
This is one of the best games on the NES. Especially considering it's release date. By far the most expansive quest of it's time.
Jordanv78 07-09-15 - 01:31 PM
You can bomb yourself out of a hole...lol

Also retro gamer you can always suggest a better review. I mean there is a fantastic review I've seen which i'm going to suggest since it is much better.

SuperCrash64 06-04-13 - 03:04 PM
not really some problems as if you beaten the game. Samus is pratically the main character metroid
retrogamer20001 06-04-13 - 02:57 PM
I found a few problems with the top review, such as the typical calling Samus "Metroid", and it said there's no story. If you wait a couple seconds, text shows up telling you to destroy the Metroids of Planet Zebeth. Sorry, but errors really annoy me.
megametroidmario 05-27-13 - 10:21 PM

Can you get someone else to do the review for this, this Marcmoney guy has no idea how to talk or anything about the game. Please.
mr.awsome 02-07-13 - 03:29 PM
how do I get Game Genie for this game???
retrogamer20001 12-27-12 - 04:41 AM
*Just to make this clear* The main character's name is Samus Aran. The jellyfish-looking thingies that follow you around and suck the life force out of you are called Metroids.
hola12345 11-24-12 - 02:59 PM
dont be so hard, im sure the first time you play this game, you think her name was metroid also she was a "he", im wrong? you discover all those things later, in gameplay, its a surprise to know she is a woman, etc etc.. :)
