Lunar Legend Featured Review

Lunar Legend Review by: LegolasJJH - 8/10

Lunar Legend
Lunar Legend is a remake of the Lunar Silver Star Story games in a portable version. This Tale is so epic it has had multiple releases on multiple platforms and yet I feel the game still doesn't garner enough interest. The game is an RPG and does follow a somewhat traditional story, but that's not to say the story isn't magnificent, but on first glance it may seem typical.

You get to become Alex a young adventurer who dreams of one day becoming Dragon Master. Alex lives in a small village named Burg. An exalted shrine looms over the village of a hero who was the last Dragon Master named Dyne. Alex often visits Dyne's shrine imagining the adventures the late Dragon Master must have had and envisioning his own adventures if he were to become the new Dragon Master.

The game immediately takes you in as you are immersed in the games world known as Lunar. You begin your journey at Dyne's Monument where you will meet Nall, your best friend, who is a flying cat! Nall is not a controllable part of your team but a vital part of your team none the less throughout the entire game. Next you will meet Luna your first love and Ramus who is also your best friend. Luna is very pretty and she is always very protective of Alex. She is known for her beautiful voice and is said to be one of the greatest singers in all the land. Ramus is like your side kick who is Burg's Mayors Son. Ramus dreams of one day opening his own shop and becoming a wealthy merchant.

Alex wants to become Dragon Master which is a title only one person in the world can have. Currently the world of Lunar has lost its Dragon Master with the disappearance of Dragon Master Dyne. Dragon Master Dyne was one of four heroes of Legend. The others being Mel De Alkirk or Hell Mel, Lemia Ausa, and Ghaleon. Along your Journey you will also meet other friends who will aide you such as Nash who is an aspiring mage at the mages guild who studies under the great Ghaleon himself. You will also meet Jessica who is an outspoken tom boy who is the daughter of none other than Hell Mel. Kyle is another person you will meet who has a rocky relationship with Jessica and leads a group of bandits. There is Mia who is Lemia Ausa's daugther. Lastly is a mysterious man who you will meet fairly early named Laike, who you will notice is amazingly powerful. Lemia Ausa is the mages guild Headmistress, making Mia pretty much a princess. Nash has an infatuation with Mia. Hell Mel is the leader of one of the biggest city's in Lunar called Meribia.

Your epic quest first begins as you and your 4 friends set out to the Dragons Cave which is near to your home city of Burg. This is the games first 'dungeon' and acts as somewhat of a tutorial to the game. Inside, if you journey far enough, you will come to the Dragon that inhabits this cave where you will learn what you must do to find out if you have what it takes to become Dragon Master. Of course wishing to set out immediately you only stop briefly back in Burg before you decide that you must set out to meet the other Dragons who will test you to see if you're worthy. Luna and Nall of course will be joining you because they go wherever Alex goes and Ramus will go but has more material goals in mind. While speaking with the Dragon your party received a large Dragons Gem which Ramus wishes to sell in the main lands largest city Meribia. With the wealth from selling the Dragons gem Ramus hopes to finally open up his shop and begin his dream of being a merchant. Quickly after leaving Burg your party arrives at its first obstacle, the Weird Woods , which a strange mist enshrouds blocking your party's chances of passing. It is here that you will discover that Luna is not merely just a magnificent singer but her singing actually has a supernatural or even magical ability about it. While traversing the Weird Woods your party is ambushed by a group of monsters that inhabit the woods. All seems lost when a strange man comes to your aide and not only saves your party, but does it with ease. The man reveals himself as Laike but tells you little more than good luck. Your party continues on its quest and will travel from the port city of Saith to finally reach the main land where they will first go to the city of Meribia. In Meribia you will learn of the Magical city of Vayne which literally floats in the air. Vayne is where the Mages Guild calls its home and by the time you reach Vayne you will have met most of the main characters of the games cast. While in Vayne is when the games story will really start to pick up and I'll leave you to find out the rest.

As you can see just the beginning of the story of Lunar Legend is long and complex and is the huge selling point in this game. The game play is good and doesn't detract from the game, so in addition to the already stellar story it makes this one to remember. This is one of the first turn based RPG's that I've ever played that actually had a movement or placement feature in it. Unlike most turn based RPGs instead of being fixed in one place while in combat, in this game the characters actually have a movement range and must move within attack range on the battlefield to strike. This adds a much needed strategy element to fights which I think livens up a somewhat stale battle system.

GRAPHICS: 8
The graphics are great for a game on a hand held system. The games backgrounds and setting are very detailed and brightly colored. The game has somewhat of an anime look to it, which along with the story and especially the characters gives a Japanese vibe to the game. The only problem I have with the graphics is the fact that since this game was originally made for consoles and not the hand held market , it's predecessor games actually have better graphics and if you were to enjoy this games story for the first time I would for sure recommend you play Lunar Silver Star Story Complete for the playstation 1. This is by far the best incarnation of this game.

SOUND: 8
The games sound immerses you in the world of Lunar. The characters voices are especially good and give you a good idea of each characters unique personality's. The game contains some original songs that bring you into the story of the game.

ADDICTIVENESS: 9
This game is the total package for RPG's. The story is so good that it makes you not want to stop playing. Along with the story the games fights are fun and don't get bland quickly like most turn based RPG's. Coupled together these two elements make for a game that you just can't stop playing.

STORY: 10
The games story delivers. If you are looking for a game with an amazing story, look no further. The story is the main selling point for this game and is one that leaves you on the edge of your seat. You will be left speechless by the games many plot twists and will surely leave even the sharpest players surprised.

DEPTH: 9
The game is long and the world of Lunar is vast. It will take over 25 hours to complete this game for your first time. It probably took me close to 40 hours for my first completion of the game and I still did not do everything there was for me to do.

DIFFICULTY: 7
The game is fairly easy although you will have to do some grinding at some points in the game. As long as you do grind a little for exp at certain points though, the game is not overly difficult. I think making this game not too hard to complete is a good thing though because it allows you to constantly continue forward on your quest and the games plot.

OVERALL: 8
I rank Lunar Legends an 8/10 overall making it an extremely worthwhile game. If you enjoy RPG's and haven't yet tried this game, add it to the top of your list for games to play next. The only thing that holds this game back from a perfect 10/10 score is the fact that Lunar Star Story Complete exists which is this same game only better. If you don't have access to the playstation version then you will surely want to play this game. Adventurers rejoice because Lunar Legends is here go forth and embark on the Epic Quest of a lifetime!

Lunar Legend Game Description

Based off the popular Sega CD and PSOne RPG title, Lunar Legend retells the story of Alex, the boy who aspires to be a Dragonmaster like his hero Dyne. Grouped with all of his allies from the original game, Alex and friends embark on the traditional fantasy adventure quest to defeat Emperor Ghaleon from discovering and abusing the hidden power that Luna holds. This is a traditional turn-based combat RPG filled with magic spells, hidden weapons and quests to discover, and lots of humor in the overall story.
