G.I Joe A Real American Hero   tornadocam
G.I Joe was a popular toy in the 1980's and 1990's. The figure toy line was so popular that it even spawned comics and a cartoon series. The popularity of the toy line also spawned two video games made for the NES GI Joe a Real American Hero and the Atlantis Factor. I will be reviewing the first game. It should be noted the first game was made by Taxan and the second game (Atlantis ) was made by Capcom. So lets get to it.
Story: 8
The GI Joe forces have tracked down Cobra's hide outs. Cobra is lead by the ruthless and evil Cobra Commander. G.I Joe's General, General Hawk tells his sergeants and commanding officers : Duke, Snake Eyes, Grid Iron, Rock N Roll and Blizzard to assault Cobra's Bases. The fight will take them through the Amazon, City streets, City Sewers and the Arctic Regions. The Joe's set out to stop Cobra Commander's Evil. In the meantime they must battle through Cobra's machines, officers and even the head hacho himself. What traps are in store for the Gi Joe Team?
Okay this was a basic plot. It introduced the characters very well. We know who the good guys are and the bad guys are. The plot also stayed pretty much with the toyline and comics. Sometimes video games can really butcher a series line. Cobra is trying to take over the world with his forces. I was a fan of Gi Joe so it was nice to see the plot and video game remain consistent.  The only thing was the plot could have a little bit more creative. While it introduces the characters well. It really does not explain Cobra's main reason or scheme.
Graphics and Controls : 6
The graphics in this game are okay but nothing real special. The backgrounds are nice and colorful and the bases look nice. The graphics reminded me of an early NES game not a NES game made in 1990/1991. I played a lot of NES games that came out around this time Super Mario Bros 3, Mega Man 3 and 4. Those graphics were amazing. I will confess that I played Atlantis before this game. It could be that maybe Taxan did not have the best chips and technology that Nintendo and Capcom had.  Some of the graphics look a little fuzzy especially when it comes to the Joe's. General Hawk does not look like he does in the toy line or even Atlantis. Also it appears that the Joes sprites can sometimes get fuzzy. Another thing was the Cobra Soldiers (Vipers) look totally different and fuzzy. The Graphics as I stated behave like a 1986 NES game not a 1990 one. Still the graphics are not horrible but they are not going to blow you away.
The Controls are for the most part pretty good. They are not like Mega Man Controls but they are not bad. It does appear at times that certain Joes controls are stiff and sluggish. I do not know if that was done intentionally to reflect that some of the Joes are known for speed while others are for power. Still it can be a problem when you have to shoot a lot of enemies or jump across pits. The controls is what keeps the rating from being lower. I really expected more from the graphics. So I give the graphics and controls a 6 out of 10
Sound: 7
The Sound in this game is alright some of the tunes are memorable. The Arctic and Amazon stages had the best music. The weapon shots have nice sounds to let you know they are doing damage. Some of the other soundtracks did sound kind of fuzzy though. It sometimes sounded like there was static in them. Also during the boss battles it sounded like there was some tingles. So the sound is good but it could have been a lot better. Thankfully they fixed the sounds in the second game Atlantis. I give the sound a good 7 out of 10.
Replay Value: 7
This is a fun game do not get me wrong. If you are a fan of Gi  Joe just like I am you will find this game to be pretty fun. However I find myself playing the second game Atlantis More. It is fun to mix and  match your Joes you can chose among 5. I often pick my favorites. That adds replay value. The graphics and sound can lower the replay value somewhat.
Depth: 8
This game does have its depth. As I stated you can mix and pick your Joes Though one Joe will be picked for you but you can pick the other two. So it is fun to mix the Joes or play with your favorite. There is also lots of items to collect. Weapons, Bullets, Vests, power ups, and secrets are all in this game. The depth is were the game really shines. I like games that have a lot of depth to them. Concerning the Depth of this game it is a lot like a Mega Man game.  The only thing that keeps the Depth from being a 9 or a 10 or there is only like 6 levels in this game. Some of the levels are short and some are long. So with only 6 stages that brings the rating down just a little. Still I give the depth rating a 8 out of 10.
Difficulty: 8
Another area this game shines is its difficulty. The difficulty though does not really start to pick up till stage 2 and when it picks up it really picks up. You are going to get hit in this game that is given. The makers of this game made it difficult by enemy placement. Enemies will hit you from behind, jump from the top, come out of pits, and pretty much any direction. The Vipers will also try to overwhelm you in numbers Another area this game is difficult is easy stage has a maze stage. In the maze stages you have to find a check mark to put a bomb on it and then the time starts. It is so easy to get lost in the mazes or worse have time run out on you. The bosses are also difficult especially starting with stage 2. So t his game will require alertness and reflexes mostly.
Now as difficult as the game can be the game does try to help you out. You can pick two Joes to go along on a mission. Each Joe has their strengths so you can chose that to help you out. Second Most of the vipers only take one shot to knock out. The video game breaks away from the toy line and comics here. In the Toy Line and Comics the vipers were very tough. Also they are several types of weapons and bullets to pick up. So its like the game is trying to help you out and that is what keeps the difficulty from being a 9 or a 10. I give the difficulty rating a 8 out of 10.
Overall: 8.2
I must admit I actually did not get to play this game till after I played Atlantis. It wasn't till I played Atlantis that I knew of this game. Atlantis makes reference to this game. Atlantis was a very good game and probably the one Gi Joe game that most know about. It seems Atlantis is more well known then this game. As I stated I'm a huge fan of GI Joe. Growing up in the 80's and 90's Gi Joe was my favorite toys. So I was glad to learn about the video games.
This game came out in 1990 maybe 1991 and I want to think Atlantis came out in 1992. It was near the end of the NES run as in 1990 the SNES came out. I was kind of disappointed in the graphics though. I was really expecting graphics like Atlantis or the Mega Man games. I think the graphics really hurt this game's rating they are not terrible but nothing special. Also the second game had a better plot. I wonder if the makers of this game rushed it out in fear that the NES was about to bite the dusts. Also what was interesting was the two Gi Joe games were made by different companies. The second game was made by Capcom, who makes the Mega Man games. The second game played like a Mega Man game and I have read were they used the same graphics. I wonder if the company that made this game just did not have the graphic chips that other video game makers did.
The depth and difficulty is what really makes this game shine. There are several items to collect and the difficulty will require skill to master. I really like games with lots of depth and difficulty to them. It just makes them more special in my opinion. Would I recommend this game.  Yes, despite its flaws it is still a fun game to play and a good game. However, I will have to say  you probably need to play Atlantis first if you are new to video games. If the flaws do not bother you, you will find nothing wrong with this game. So, I give Gi Joe A Real American Hero a good rating of 8.2

I can't play the game. When the game comes on, the select arrow goes rapidly back and forth between "New Game" and "Pa ssword". Does anyone else have this problem?
