Mario4245 tried Review @!   mario4245
Hey everyone! Mario4245 here with another review, and if you can't tell, I am reviewing the classic Mother of RPG's (See what I did there?)! So without further wait, lets begin this review!
Overall: 9.5 So this game earned a 9.5, I wanted to give it a 10 but it had some flaws. The game had amazing SFX and BMG, great graphics, major plot-twisting story, the game was super addictive and it sucked you in the more you played (Figure of speech).
Graphics: 9 The games graphics to me really made me feel that the developers really pushed the Super Nintendo to its limits, the towns and objects each had their own color palette and each pallette really gave off the vibe and atmosphere of each area in this bright, colorful world with great music and SFX to match. The only reason I gave it a 9 is because I personally felt that some palettes where in the wrong areas, and giygas's background gave me somewhat of a headache.
Sound: 10 Just as the graphics department, they really pushed the SNES to its limits sound-wise. The sound on this game took up 8 MB, while other games like Super Mario World and Super Mario Kart only took up 4 MB. But the sound was stunning and enjoyable, with special tracks for each enemy, music that helps give the atmosphere of each area.
Addictiveness: 10 The game was super addictive. You had that feeling that you just have to play it again after you play it for the first time. Once you play it, if you like RPG's, you may find yourself using all 3 save files. With music, graphics, and gameplay to match, this game has a very high replayability level.
Story: 9 The story was great, but somewhat jumbled up. First a meteor crashes, then you get a stone from a fly, then your neighbor turns out to be the bad guy, then a girl gets sentenced to death, then the true bad guy is a...an...what is giygas anyway? But that is part of what makes the game so enjoyable, trying to figure out who is who and what is what.
Depth: 10 Item boxes, enemies, equipment, items, stats, PSI, praying, Mr. Saturns, cults, iron pencils, fuzzy pickles, need I go on? The game has lots of towns and caves, giving the players the freedom for somewhat limitless exploration, just as long as all your party members are strong enough to kill whatever gets in their way.
Difficulty: 8 This game is very difficult, on your first play through, you may find yourself wasting food items and having 0 PP more often than not, but after a lot of practice, you will see yourself as Ness, Destroyer of EVIL! (Saw a chance to put in a spongebob quote, so I took it, sorry)
Also, this game has interesting gimmicks not a lot of RPG's have, like an auto-victory system if you outclass an enemy by far, but I didn't know where to class this. But overall, if Nintendo where to submit a classic RPG to be voted the best classic RPG, they would probably send in Earthbound. This was Mario4245, and I am out!

Earthbound... where do I begin. This game has put me at a loss for words every since I was a child, from its modern feel to its classic music. You begin the game as a young boy named Ness, whom lives in a seemingly peaceful town called Onett. Then suddenly, one fateful day, everything changes. A meteorite from an unknown origin crash lands in the outskirts of your neighborhood, and an unsettling truth begins to unfold, as Ness comes to realize his true potential. This game puts a modern-day spin on the old-school RPG mechanics, giving the player more attachment to the protagonists as they venture into situations and settings that relate to our generation. Although Earthbound never received much acknowledgement due to poor advertising in America, it has quickly become known all over the world as one of the most masterfully-created RPGs of all time.
<><><><><><><><><><>
Gameplay: 10/10
<><><><><><><><><><>
I will rarely ever give a perfect rating to a game, and it isn't just because Earthbound is my favorite; it is my favorite for a reason. From the sarcastic humor to the insanely creative and metaphorical enemies you will encounter, this game will keep you interested. Not only that, but the amazing storyline and playability add the icing to an already delicious cake. Call your parents when you get homesick, smash up some hippies with a baseball-bat, visit the dinosaur museum in the big city, or just enjoy riding your bike on the beach. Not to mention, the interactive ending was one of the first ever implemented into a game of its genre. Earthbound has something for everyone, and doesn't fail to deliver satisfaction- even over a decade later.
<><><><><><><><><><>
Controls: 8/10
<><><><><><><><><><>
The characters are easily maneuverable, and the battle system is simple enough, but it just feels too simple for the uniqueness of this game. The game can lag in some areas, causing motion to be slow, and the same problem can occur when there are too many possible enemy encounters on the screen at once. There is also the age-old problem with this style of game where the NPCs move in random paths, and you find yourself unable to walk through them. You literally have to stand and wait for them to move out of your way so that you can continue in the direction you were going. There are a lot of items with many different uses; too many for such limited inventory space, and the items do not stack. You will have to navigate your status menus constantly to get all the functionality from item usage and exploring. Though all of these things can cause an annoyance, it is minor compared to the depth and the amount of enjoyment that can be obtained from playing.
<><><><><><><><><><>
Graphics: 7/10
<><><><><><><><><><>
The graphic styles are a bit too pixellated for a two-dimensional game, and the sprites often have too much detail where it just simply can't fit on the graphic. However, the objects and scenery are decently rendered with a bit of a cartoon feel, which fit the mood of the game nicely. The artwork for the enemies while in battle sequence are very creative and for the most part appealing to the eye, not to mention the final boss (which I won't ruin for you, but let's just say if you do the research, it is one of the most horrifying bosses ever implemented into a game).
<><><><><><><><><><>
Sound: 9/10
<><><><><><><><><><>
The sound effects fit the style of gameplay perfectly, and the music is breath-taking even today. Itoi (the creator) was able to capture the essence of each area of the game beautifully, and without the music, Earthbound just wouldn't be the same. It has a great amount of emotion, which compliments the situations in the game remarkably, and gives the player a heightened sense of immersed play. My only issue with the sound is that the quality in rare cases can be poor, and it just doesn't seem on par with its orchestration, but it is still unforgettable. After you finish Earthbound, I could almost guarantee you will be humming the tunes to yourself and listening to them over again for a long time to come.
<><><><><><><><><><>
Overall Score: 9/10
<><><><><><><><><><>
Even with the minor defects in Earthbound, it is still just too amazing to complain. When you combine all of the elements that it has to offer, you get a masterfully blended combination of classic RPG elements with a fresh and unique overlay. One cannot help but get swept away by the storyline and detailed personalities of all the bizarre yet familiar characters they will encounter. Without a doubt, whether you are an RPG fanatic like me or not, you will get enjoyment from this game. It is a must-play for gamers of all audiences, and I highly recommend it to anyone up for a challenging and gratifying adventure.

Earthbound!   Uzar
I've put it off for long enough! The time has come, friends, for me to write an Earthbound review!
Earthbound is a game I became interested in because of our capped hero's shenanigans in Super Smash Brothers. But I slowly grew into liking the game for what it is, and not because of Smash at all. I began seeing what all the fuss about the game was about, and why people grew so attached to this silly little game. So without farther adieu, et's begin!...Actually let's wait a minute. Mom says I need to change out of my PJ's first. :P
Graphics: 8/10
The graphics to this game are spectacular! The sprites are all well detailed. And while there's limited animation, and a lot of reuse that goes on. The charm to the characters are really solidified through the spritework. Yes Bootleg Mr. T and big eyed man, I'm looking at you two. :P There are even times when the dialogue box is used as a joke.
The battle screens are a league of their own. Each enemy has a unique psychedelic background when you fight them. And they have a slightly higher level of detail since there's not much else going on in battle. There is a lot of recolored tougher versions of enemies later in the game. But at least they keep that spectacular design in tact. Just...A little note of reduced effort on the graphical buffet.
The environments are all really cool too. They are all very distinct from each other. You'll have a hard time trying to confuse different places. Onett and Twoson look very different, Fourside is enormous, and Deep Darkness looks like it was lifted straight from Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy!
This game is a graphical delight, but it isn't without flaws. The reusing sprites and recoloring enemies can get really obnoxious at times.
Sound: 10/10
The sound in this game is phenomenal, especially by SNES standards. The sound effects are pretty cool. Each PSI Power has it's own sound effect. And they range from recognisable, to a sound that no human or properly working noise maker could possibly make. Maybe they used alien instruments to make the sound effects for them. Aside from the PSI powers; there's nothing to really talk about for sound effects.
The music is amazing! Its obvious right off the bat that a ton of time and effort went into each and every song. No two songs sound remotely alike. Although there are quite a few songs that are remixes of music from Mother 1 / Eathbound Zero / Earthbound Beginnings. But the fact some 8 bit chiptune turns into a 16 bit masterpiece that still sounds amazing to this day is fantastic. There is one specific instance where it sounds like real instruments are playing. And that track alone was enough for me to boost this rating to a ten!
Addictiveness: 8/10
This is one of the few games I've played multiple times in a row. Okay, twice. But that really says a lot when it's a full length RPG. Anyway, especially during your first playthrough, stopping is almost unthinkable! Although the least addictive this game gets is in the very beginning. But once you stop the required grinding for the first major area of the game, you're golden! And then the ball really starts rolling and the game gets more enjoyable. And replaying the game at least once still captures the addictiveness from your first playthrough. At least in my opinion it does. This is one of the more addicting games I've played actually.
Story: 6/10
The story is cool, but in Nintendo tradition, it's probably the weakest element of the game. Essentially, it's a young boy sent on a quest (by a talking bee from the future) to stop the evil Giygas, who destroys everything in ten years time. So with a bit of exposition, Ness is sent off to eight different locations to power himself up to fight Giygas, and to find any friends who may help them. Along the way you meat living piles of barf, aggressive cups of coffee, a few monkeys, and a cosmic terror beyond any physical description any language of man (except for Guamish) can describe.
The game's events unfold in a charming, albiet weird series of events. It was a kind of quirky that nobody really wanted in their games, much less in an RPG. But this sort of brought inspiration and some humor to games prior to this. It was a bigger story than Mother 1, but not quite as emotional as Mother 3. But this game is fantastic in it's own right. It's just one of those happier stories. The kind that seem to be a lost art nowadays.
Depth: 7/10
The depth is this game is a lot more than you'd expect in ways you wouldn't expect. First of all, the sheer amount of items is astounding. There are a ton of items that...Don't do much. And were probably added in as some inside joke among developers. Who seriously brushes their teeth in the middle of a battle anyway? And what fun is there in mentioning items people find helpful also? ;)
There is a lot of dialogue in this game. And there are a few instances where almost everyone has something different to say. For example: Talking to some NPC's multiple times in a row gives you different responses. And Solving the major problem of an area results in change too. As well as returning to any location after finishing the game. So as you can tell...There is a lot of dialogue, and a lot of changes to that dialogue too. But almost all of it is entirely optional. So it's also a nice little secret too. But in the endgame almost every single NPC has new dialogue. Is that depth or what?!
The game lasts a good amount of time too. It's not exactly a 100+ hour undertaking like Xenoblade Chronicles. Nor is it a quick little RPG akin to Undertale. I'd say this is a decent length for an RPG. Needless to say, the RPG has very few sidequests or anything. It's pretty linear in that sense. But you'll still be playing for awhile.
Difficulty: 4/10
This is a pretty easy game to go through. Really the hardest part is the beginning. You'll need to do some grinding. But once you wrap up Onett and get halfway through Twoson the game picks up really quickly. But that's essentially it in terms of grinding. There are a few other areas I'd call challenging. But it's never impossibly hard. In fact, there is even multiple hint stations! They look like the Psychiatric Help stand from Charlie Brown. And like that stand, this will save you from insanity. Although I have never needed it before. I only used it once out of curiosity. You may get stuck once or twice. But this game is, for the most part, smooth sailing.
Battling is pretty easy. There's even an auto fight mode; in case hitting Attack is too hard to do. :P Well, attack or hitting PSI and picking which attack or unleash, or who to heal up, or various buffs. But you honestly don't need any of the buffing powers unless you're underlevel. But the chances of that happening are pretty low. There aren't many enemies I'd consider tough either. Well, they are a little tough when you're new to the area. But if you become strong enough enemies will actually run away from you! That feeling is one of the best you can have.
Earthbound is one of the few games I'd consider unforgettable. The charm, the spouts of humor, the music, the actual gameplay...It all really sticks with you. It feels like the kind of adventure you would make up as a kid. Only with rockin' music! :P This game is just great. Although it's not exactly perfect. For starters; the walk speed is awfully slow. :P So that can make travel a pain. Also you can run out of money if you don't know what you're doing. Then you just need to stall for time to get more.
Anyway, I highly recommend this game. It's one of my favorites. If RPG's are your thing, you just may love Earthbound.

It's yet another Earthbound Review.   fusionaceblus
Hmm, it's a sunday night, and I don't have anything to do. Well, I guess I'll do a review of one of the last games I completed: Earthbound. Now, by "last game I completed" I mean I completed Earthbound in like July/August. But anyway, heres a bit of a prologue:
Now, I've always wanted to play Earthbound and like complete it because pretty much EVERYONE GOES ABSOLUTELY NUTS OVER THIS GAME. Seriously, Earthbound Fans can be rabid when you even bring up their games. So, with everyone pressuring me into playing it, I tried to play it. The first time I played it, I got up to the first time you enter Threed, and then I just stopped. I tried to get far, but sadly I only got like maybe less than a quarter of the way. Skipping ahead a few years to this year, I was getting slightly good as Ness in Smash 4, so of course I wanted to get his amiibo. I actually made a pact to play Earthbound if I ever get my hands on him, and given that April for Amiibos was a disaster, I didn't get to this point until the July Restocks and I just so happen to find a Ness while looking for Bayonetta 2. Then, I looked for a guide (because you kinda need one) such as the one on starmen.net, and with my Ness Amiibo in tow, with it pointing at me at all times like, "you better complete my game", I was ready to play Earthbound completely. So, is it as good as people say it is?
GRAPHICS - 9: Earthbound is a pretty good looking game, with a vast color pallet and because of it's quirky nature with the battle backgrounds, it scores pretty high here. The graphics, after all these years, don't feel dated so it can be easy to get in to if you are playing it even 24 or so years later.
SOUND - 10: Oh man, Earthbound has a kickin' soundtrack. it can be ambient or exciting and it usually does well in both categories. Some of my favorite tracks being Summers, Dr. Andonuts' Lab, Smiles and Tears (not the version in Smash though, that one sucks) and Fourside.
ADDICTIVENESS - 5: I'm not sure why, but I had many times when I just felt like quitting. It might be because I wanted to do other things, and I even put the game down for over 2 weeks. I came back and completed it, but that's still a pretty long break from a game. It might of been because of how saving works in this game. You can't save anywhere like in most other RPGs (Pokemon, and for the most part of FF), and can only save in certain areas. What also stinks about only being able to save in certain areas, is that some save points cost
money to use. Sure, there's always another place to save, but that still pretty inconvenient. Why am I bringing up this save issue? Like most other people I used an Emulator (because forget finding a physical copy of this game!) and sometimes the game would straight up crash and all that progress was lost. I felt defeated, almost as much when I was almost finished with a level in FE8 and the emulator crashed, so I wasted like an hour of playtime for nothing. That might have been why I didn't want to continue right away. But still, Earthbound's charm and me being determined kept me going.
STORY - 3: Eh, it's an alright story. It's not like full of plot twists and emotional tugs to the heart but it's story felt like it was a fairly toned down thing. That can be a good thing however. Story doesn't completely make up a game (unless it's Metal Gear Solid or a Visual Novel).
DEPTH - 7: Earthbound can be a pretty long game if you are playing it for the first time, and reading everything. Earthbound can be very good with its dialogue, always being wacky or weird. What the story lacks is what the dialogue makes up for, but if you already know all the dialogue and know exactly how to play this game, you can complete it in a pretty short amount of time for an RPG.
DIFFICULTY - 8: This is where I get frustrated. Earthbound can be absolutely BRUTAL if you don't know what is ahead, or the secret way to defeat the boss, or you have to grind hardcore. This is why I wanted to follow a guide. not only does the guide key you in on secrets, but can also, well, tell you how to play the game sometimes! There's a part where you have to stand completely still for a few minutes to progress, and while there is an NPC that tells you about it, it's still really cryptic. The first boss can do MASSIVE amounts of damage to Ness, and the only way to make it any better is to either grind for burgers or grind for EXP to get Ness' signature attack, PSI Rockin. In Twoson, theres an enemy that not only takes away your PSI (which is your only way to reliably heal) it can give you the mushroom status so you have a large chance of hitting yourself or missing, but on the overworld, your movements are all messed up. Speaking of status elements, almost all of them are annoying and about half of them you can't even reliably heal up from, like Diamonization. Inns can't even heal you from certain status conditions, and you have to go to a certain NPC to get rid of it. Unless you know exactly how to do things in this game (such as following a guide or a friend helping you) you are going to get destroyed.
Sometimes this game is too real. You can only save at phones. Inventory is extremely limited. You get Homesick (if you get homesick, you won't attack most of the time, and you can only heal this by calling your Mother on the phone, and this status is only caused when you haven't talked to your mother in a while). You don't get money from fighting enemies, but rather you fight enemies, and you have to call your father (which sometimes costs money) to get the money from your fights. Back to the inventory problem, that is my only serious gripe about this game. You are always finding stuff, and you will constantly be running out of space to hold items. What's worse is that some items are specifically bound to Ness (not the Earth, as some would think) and Ness can't even store those items even though they are only used every once in a while. Oh right, the storing items system. Like your father and your mother, your last releative, your sister, runs Escargo Express. Escargo Express is the storage system, and it stinks. For one, you have to pay to store the items, next you have to wait a few seconds for the deliveryman to arrive, and he can only store 3 items. 3. Items. at a time. So, you gotta call the delivery guy multiple times if you intend on storing a large amount of inventory (which, while the inventory you have is limited, happens a lot still), you have to repeat this long and annoying process. This is a terrible mechanic in my opinion, and from what I played of the first part of Mother 3, this is still in that game, too! The guys who worked on Earthbound later worked on Pokemon, and look, Pokemon doesn't have a limited inventory system anymore. Sure, Pokemon Red to Pokemon Emerald all had limited inventory systems, but they were waaay better than Earthbound.
Overall, what do I think of Earthbound? It's a fun (but sometimes annoying) game, with a terrible Inventory system. But my opinion doesn't matter. If someone (or a fanbase) tells you to play a game because they think it's really really good, Just play with some skepticism. Play it and if something bothers you, let it bother you. I guess what I'm getting at is don't let other's opinions of a game affect yours. But anyway, yet another review and another 2 hours of my life over with just from typing. Maybe I'll do something on Jet Set Radio, or the other games I played... Anyway, thanks for reading!

You Connot Grasp The Greatness of this Game   Legin32
Overall: Let me start by saying I did not play Earthbound growing up so I am not blinded by nostalgia for this game. That being said I have to say that Earthbound is now one of my favorite RPGs ever after beating it not too long ago. It blended a great story, game play, and superb music into one complete package. Now the game is not without it's faults like the difficulty and cheapness of some attacks and psi attacks in the game. I'll get to that later. Like I said I love this game with a passion. I cannot stress how much I love this game people. Lets get this show on the road.
Graphics: What can I say about the graphics in a game that's eighteen years old. Well I could start off by saying that they are great. I mean let's be honest the graphics in earthbound are fantastic. I guarantee that everyone has seen some sprites from this game somewhere before. The graphics are bright and colorful which might have some players dismissing this as a mere kids game but trust me it is not. I'll get to that later. Like I said the graphics in the game are amazing. The character sprites on Ness and the gang are nicely detailed and the environments look awesome as well.
Sound: The music in this game is freaking fantastic. Like the character sprites I can guarantee that everyone has heard one of the tracks from this game somewhere on the Internet. The music sets a brilliant tone from a happy town to a spooky cave or even in a land filled with dinosaurs. I love the music for this game so much that even after beating the game I listen to the soundtrack all the time while doing house work. The sound effects in the game are also really really good. I especially love the battle sound effects the m
Addictiveness: This game is highly addictive. I find myself thinking about it even after I completed the story. Before I beat the game I would find myself thinking about the next thing I had to do in the game whilst doing other things. The game play is just simple enough for anyone to pick up and fun enough to entertain even the most hardcore gamers.
Story: The story is one of excellence. I loved the story from the begging. I will try not to spoil it for the readers who haven't beat the game but Ness gets roped into a massive quest by pure coincidence. That's all I'm going say about the story. If you want to know more play the game. Okay a little more :D. It is Ness's job to stop an evil Alien named Giygas. He must collect the sounds of each "Your Sanctuary" in a sound stone with the help of three friends he meets along the way(Paula, Jeff, and Poo). The kids meet many friends along the way like a gang leader who hangs out at an arcade, a band that is always tricked into servitude, and a race of strange aliens who help the group along their quest.
Depth: The game is not TOO terribly long or hard to beat. It is a healthy amount of time for an RPG. The game can be as long as you make it you could breeze through the game and not get the secret items or get all the psi abilities or it could be a long time if you do get everything. There isn't much in the way of side quests in this game but there are a few.
Difficulty: This game is by no means difficult. It is one of the easier RPGs I have played. But it isn't easy either it is a good balance of challenge and fun. At times some bosses are pretty hard but if you give it time this game will be a welcome challenge for gamers young and old.

Enter Earthbound!   Kyle!
Earthbound was originally released as Mother 2: Revenge of Gyiygas in Japan. Earthbound is a RPG (Role-Playing-Game). The game was released for the NES in August 27, 1994. And in June 5, 1995. Then for Gameboy Advance (With Mother 1 and 2), June 20, 2003. And the final, and most recent release, March 20, 2013 for the Virtual Console. This game has very similar combat to most RPG games, but doesn't contain magic. But I'll discuss that in the gameplay section.
GRAPHICS: This game's graphics were stunning! Every time I watched a video, or played it I just saw the gaming version of Mona Lisa-- which would explain why it was a five-year project. The areas, battle backgrounds, and characters have been nicely designed and have been made to look different and have a specific way to identify them. For example, Ness is most known for because of his hat, and Paula is well, one of the only females that have a major role in the game. I however felt that some enemies could have looked a bit better or had some more complexity like how the characters and areas were made. I also feel the graphics were better in the later parts of the game than the early parts-- not implying the game looked bad.
SOUND: This game's music is just amazing. I mean; AMAZING! As a musician I loved the soundtracks and now have another use for YouTube. The game's music was composed by Hiroshi Kanazu, and Hirokazu Tanaka. And the soundtrack was released by Sony Records in Japan November 2, 1994. The game's music is just so catchy I find myself looking like a retard at school humming it! But it's worth it. The beats were great and I could easily get my violin/flute/saxophone and most likely play it the way it sounds-- which if you aren't a lifelong musician, means it's that good you can play without notation. However there was that rare moment where I would find myself hating certain songs.
ADDICTIVENESS: OH MY GOD! This game is super addicting! I found myself wanting to play this game all the time! I felt the story was good enough to get me hooked-- and for those who don't know, I get bored really quick. So this game was really nice to be able to play and not lose interest. I also found myself wanting to grind/farm a lot-- so I can breeze through the game without having to worry about dying-- I just wanted to experience the story. I also liked the characters' personalities as they really appealed to me.
STORY: Now I am not going to spoil much, but:
So a meteorite crashes and a boy who has PSI named Ness is near it passes out. Soon he is informed a evil robot named Giygas. However, he'll make friends, encounter enemies, and seek out eight sanctuaries to get enough power and strength to confront Giygas.
Ness: What I consider the main character; he uses PSI like many other characters in the game and is whom you play as and control.
Jeff: A mechanical genius, and child prodigy. I like him due to how much he reminds me of myself-- minus the mechanical genius part.
Paula: One of the only female characters in the game, and she is a strong PSI user.
Poo: Last, but not least, Poo. Poo is a martial arts master with very little, if not, no physic power(s).
Depth: DANG! I know I haven't play a RPG in awhile (Most RPG's are pretty lengthy,). But man! This was pretty long. There were many enemies to fight and many things to do aside from the story. And as a collector/bestiary filler I absolutely loved achieving my goal of fighting, and killing every monster this game has to offer. And even killing Giygas is even more satisfying!
Difficulty: Now for those new to RPG's like Earthbound, it'll take some time to get used to. But it's worth it. Now this game was pretty different from what I'm used to, which made me want to try it even more! But the thing that most people don't really pay attention to is the fact it is a turn based RPG, meaning you select the moves your party member use, and they use it once it's their turn. Most people think it's just a, "Hey! Where is the shoot button/Punch button we mash?" Which is something I love to see and laugh about a lot. I do recommend this to man people interested in trying out a more interesting traditional RPG that isn't in medieval times (COUGH! FINAL FANTASY!). I do not however recommend looking for a hardcore mode rom/hack where the difficulty is upped a lot if you have not played through the game at least 3 times (That is my moto).

Not your traditional RPG!   drago
Earthbound, released June 5th 1995 to the world but a sequel to Japan's 'Mother'. The game isn't your traditional RPG. It isn't Mages and Warriors or Trolls. It's you, a kid in a small town. Going through life like a kid would. People don't talk back to you when you talked to them. You're a kid! They'd treat you like a kid and that's what you are. As you play this game you grow up with your character, you become your character. Earthbound reflects life well and has some darkness to it. It's a great game and you should definitely try it.
The Graphics in this game can be bright and happy to a bad trip. The enemies are designed well but some of the bosses can look disturbing, maybe it's just me though. The game doesn't really have a graphic style but if it had one it'd be... Weird? Battle backgrounds aren't grassy plains or caves or castles. They're an acid trip. They confuse me but they're fine. The overworld looks very bright most of the time and fit what they are. It's just the battle backgrounds that bother me... 8
In the beginning of your adventure you'll hear a lot of ambiance. Noises and sirens. It sounds like a real night in a city. It doesn't sound like a perfect place like you'd find in Pokémon. Nearly every enemy you face has a different battle theme and puts you in the mood to fight. Easy enemies don't really have complex songs but harder enemies do. I like that, it's cool. The overworld music can seem generic but it grows on you. It fits each emotion the game puts you through. 7
This game is really good when you get into it. You feel as if you are growing with Ness and his friends. Like you're going somewhere in the world. This feeling makes you really want to play on and go ahead. I can't say much about the addictiveness here, it's just addictive! 10
CRASH!!! You hear as a meteorite falls near your home. As a normal protagonist would, you go pick up your baseball bat, put on your clothes and investigate! When you get to the site you meet your friend, Pokey. He tells you to go home, so like a normal protagonist would, you do. You go back to bed and get some sleep. Later on, your neighbor and friend Pokey knocks on your door telling you he lost his brother, Picky. You go back to the crash site and you find him there. Pokey hears a buzzing noise coming from the meteor and the main game begins here... That's pretty much the beginning of the story. It get's weirder but also deeper from there, with new friends and even a betrayal... 10
This game is very long and your objectives aren't so simple to get to. You'll have to do things before them to get to... them. I could have explained that better. Basically, you'll have to make your own objective, things aren't straightforward in this game. That's a good thing though, I like games like that. 10
Now, I'm not so great at video games and this is no exception. I couldn't beat the Titanic Ant at first... It's tough! At the start you'll fight easy things like stray dogs and snakes but in Main Onett you'll soon realise things aren't as easy as you thought they were. You'll encounter the Sharks. A gang who are causing trouble in Onett. When you encounter them you'll be lucky you get out alive. It's like the game is telling you, in a subtle way, "You need better stuff!" That's good game design right there. 8
Overall Earthbound is a great game with a majorly devoted fan base. It shows life in a gaming perspective and in a very real way. It shows life from a child's perspective, like a boy going through life. A boy growing up and leaving his hometown. A boy going on an amazing adventure. A boy becoming a young man. 8.5

ONE OF THE BEST RPG'S EVER   David25866
Update to my first try:
After playing this absolutely amazing RPG's i have not much bad to say about it i love the main characters all the PSI is great i love Paula's and Poo's When looking for the King of swords i had a lot of fun even looking for that really rare weapon.
The story is one of the most amazing story lines i have ever played through but on the depth i will down rate just comparing it to mother 3 and Earthbound Zero in my opinion it has much less depth (just in my opinion).
The graphics are great for SNES standards The music i have absolutely nothing bad to say about it it is very funny for example in the dungeon man the remix of a Beatles song.
The game's wittiness is amazing like in the dungeon man with the Beatles song remix it had a yellow submarine inside with a sign saying "this yellow submarine is just simply coincidence" i found very funny.
The final boss is very original starting of with just fighting Pokey then going on attacking Giygas then finally using Paula to pray to defeat it i found very funny and original. The other bosses are very funny I mean the shining spot bosses. The funniest of all was definitely Shrooom! because of the irony with him able to make you fell funky. The other shining spot bosses are really cool as well especially the carbon dog/diamond dog was very challenging the boss itself and the dungeon to get to it as well.
The only downfall i could give to this game is how easy some of the bosses are making the game quite to simple and giving out things like multi-bottle rockets make even more easier.
My favorite part of the entire game is getting to all the your sanctuary's and getting to hear the whole song after getting the one at lava spring and going through Magicant and getting such an amazing level up for your main character!
In the end i love this game and i would play it again and again! if you don't play too much of this game i really think you are missing out

Earthbound:The war aganist Giygas!   Gingercream1
Earthbound is one of those hidden gems. Most games, in it's day, were just a simple story of how a strong man of some sort would go to save a beautiful girl who had been kidnapped by some evil creature or something along those lines. you never saw any of those things in Earthbound. Your just a kid with PSI powers trying to save the world from some alien named Giygas who's trying to take it over.
Graphics: Earthbound's graphics are well made. It makes places like towns look fun a cherrful and other places like caves look frightning. And while Earthbound is an older game, it's graphics are still appealing to the eyes.
Sound: The sound has always been one of the great things in Earthbound. with over 100 tracks, (yes, i checked) the music does exactly what it is meant to do. It can frighten you, make you happy, or just sooth you. The sound can change any moment in the game to a different feeling. I think the sound in this game has been worked hard on. And it still sounds great, even though Earthbound is one of those older games.
Addictiveness: The addictiveness is pretty high. the game is pretty tough and will call for some level grinding, but it's still fun to play all the same. You'll always feel a satisfaction after beating a boss, and it's always fun to explore places, looking for items. Earthbound will always be a game you might want to come back to.
Story: The plot of Earthbound is so much more different than plots of games in the same time as it. Your fighting Giygas, the alien who wants to take over. with your group of friends, you set of to defeat him. Just from saying that, it sounds a lot different than plots of other games back in the day, so it is very unique.
Depth: oh boy.. Earthbound is a very long game. With the level grinding and all the things you have to do, it is longer than some of the other games in the day. But it can still be fun, and even though you might die a few times before nailing a boss, It always leaves you with a thought, what's next?
Difficulty: Earthbound is pretty hard in terms of defeating things. It takes much strategy to beat it, and with all it's puzzles and enemies, it will take you awhile. It's not hard to learn though, and none of the controls are irritating.
Overall, Earthbound is truly great game. with it's quirky humor, and it's bunch of characters, it's one of those games I would reccomend to someone. that being said, I advise you to play it!

Ender used PSI:review!   ender44
side note: I have been short on reviews. But I am back on track.
I love things that are different, heck, I'm different. And I saw earthbound as the light at the end of a tunnel. In earthbound's day, every single RPG featured swords, a war-mongering king, and some kind of beautiful maiden. Earthbound shook things up a bit. It instead has incredibly wacky weapons that replaced swords with baseball bats and frying pans, the best and most hilarious enemies to date, and witty and hilarious dialogue. Earthbound's gameplay also differed from other RPG's. It utilized a rolling health system that would allow you to save yourself if you were hit critically, as long as you were fast enough. It also allowed you to sneak up on your enemies, though this would also allow them to sneak up on you. On with that thing I do, review. (It rhymes!)
graphics: by the standards of 1995, this game looks pretty good. The overworlds in most SNES games (if they had them) were a little bland to me. Earthbound gave its cities and its environments some character, bringing fun destinations and cool places. The battle's graphics are what I want to really focus on though. The backgrounds of fights in most RPG's were literally just crushing blackness. The background's in earthbound's battle scenes are very colorful, and are aesthetically pleasing. And the designs of the enemies meant to be scary do a very good job of doing so, and the enemies meant to look hilarious do just that.
Sound: I don't know if I am the only one who sees this, but a few of this games song sound like the opening to a song by queen. Well, the sound is definitely pleasing. I am not a huge fan of the overworld music, but the battle music is another thing. This music is just fantastic and it gets you right into the mood for battle.
addictiveness: its there. This game does take a while to complete, so while it is definitely a game you will want to play again, you wont play and beat it 20 times. This game definitely keeps you hooked and makes you want to keep playing.
Story: yay, this part. You play a normal kid. He goes throughout his normal life in onett, a city in eagleland. Though all that is changed when a meteor lands about a mile from his house. Our hero (known as ness) is sent on a quest that an alien bee informed him of. This bee speaks of three boys and a girl who stop the evil gigyas(gyig in mother 2 which is the Japanese earthbound, and giegue in mother) who takes over the world in ten years. Ness learns the existence of a magic called PSI which aides him in his quest to find eight melodies and find those other chosen ones to help him in his quest.
And before any of this happens, his mother tells his to change out of his pajamas...
depth: there is literally too much to do in this game. There are 8 sanctuary locations where you find the melodies, there are 3 other main characters you must find. And there are 8 cities and important places to go. There are a multitude of enemies, weapons, and PSI powers you can find, and plenty of assorted caves, forests, and buildings to explore.
difficulty: This game isn't impossible. At some points it will call for some extreme skill or some grinding. There are also some points throughout the game where you will be puzzled as to where you should go.
Overall, you should play it. I love this game and you will too. And if you don't, gigyas wins.

Earthbound   Marcmoney
Overall - 10
Oh my god, this game is addicting. It is way too fun and very epic. Playing this game will never make you stop playing it. When I started playing this game, I looked at it and was like "this is just like final fantasy." When I got into the game, I was so into it and seemed very interesting and adventurous. Playing this game would get your butt off of doing nothing.
Graphics - 8
The graphics are okay.  Some of the faces on Earthbound is a little messed up.  For example, Porkey in the beginning.  His face did not look like a human face at all.
Sound - 9
The sound was very good.  It was related to the game and some were just interesting.  Good songs and good sound effects.  My favorite sound effect is the one where you are going into a battle, it is just so different from other games. :P
Addictiveness - 10
Like I said, this game is so addicting.  I could not stop playing it.  It was like playing as a little boy in real life going to town with money and credit cards and stuff.  It is very good, especially the leveling up.
Story - 10
The story is amazing.  It starts out with Ness and Porkey going to get Picky, Porkey's brother, that was asleep near the meteorite at night.  When the three were about to leave, the meteorite starts to glow and a bee-looking insect was telling them that the future is not going to be good or something and that the three heroes is their only hope.  After that, they all go into Porkey's house and the bee gets hit by the mother and the bee told Ness that he had to go to 8 different places and all that stuff.  It is a good story, but I have never beaten the game though. :S
Depth - 10
There are a lot of features in the game.  You have the money, the credit card deposits and withdraw, and equipping items.  It is somewhat related to Final Fantasy and Fire Emblem when it comes to items in the game.  The game makes you want to play it, I guarantee you.  I always wanted to play it and now I have and it was better than I expected.
Difficulty - 5
The game is not that hard if you know what you are doing.  In the beginning, it might be hard and you could die a few times.  I do not know why, but that is just how it is to me.
Wrap Things Up...
Earthbound on the SNES is one of the most popular games I have ever played.  I highly recommend trying this game.  It is a good game and is a great adventure.  I do not know why they would not make newer games of Earthbound since it is 2011, but they should make a game of Earthbound soon. :)

Earthbound Review   BVBAngel06
Graphics
The graphics of enemies during a battle tended to be very good, but when exploring in-game, the quality of some characters, buildings and text were a little bit of a let-down. Even with it being a retro game, I still say the graphics were pretty impressive for the game's age.
Sound
The music of Earthbound was very catchy indeed! I especially enjoyed the theme from Onett. When it came to fighting Giygas as a final boss, the game's soundtrack suddenly became very eerie, but very effective. The sound effects both in battle and in exploring the open game world were exceptionally impressive.
Addictiveness
I continued to play Earthbound until I finished it completely, I was determined to play nothing else until I managed to finish it! There is no doubt I would happily play this game again!
Story
The game's plot was very interesting and unique to other games I've played. Earthbound has a curious storyline, it was completely different to any other game story I've seen before. The in-game depth of this plot gets deeper the more the player is involved with the story. The plot was much more than I expected!
Depth
Earthbound took me a very long time to complete. I wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything at all, it was totally worth the time it took for me to complete it! This game is very In-Depth and very open for exploring! A perfect game for any RPG fans!
Difficulty
I only found Earthbound a hard game if my levels weren't high enough and at the beginning, as enemies proved tough against me as a Level 1. It takes a while to get used to the system of battling, since there are allot of possibilities of effects from PSI moves or exploring places like the desert. Whereas using a PSI Healing came of very good use in most situations of battle mishap!
Overall
I really enjoyed playing Earthbound. The storyline, Depth and soundtrack were perfect for my liking! Any fan of RPG's made by Nintendo will love this game! It's a must-play game of Nintendo's finest work! 10/10!

Earthbound review   TheeDragoniteMa..
EarthBound Review
i like this game a lot. its very fun to play and worth all the effort of leveling up throughout the game. i love the characters and the main story.  in this game you play as ness and more people join you as you progress through the game.
paula joins you first then jef then poo.
paula is bad at using normal attacks but good a PSI moves. Ness is good with all attacks. Jeff has no PSI moves but can use items like the bottle rocket and he can fix broken things when you sleep somewhere. i dont knoe about poo though because i havent got to that part in my game.
the emimies in this game are quite annoying like the zombie dog that poisons you and the ghost that posseses you but most of them are just easy to beat unless you run away most the time and dont level up.
you start in Onett then you go to twoson then threed then saturn valley. thats all i have gone up to.  this game is very realistic in some ways because if your friend dies you have to go to the hospital and pay the fee and you have a credit card.
my favorite items is the teddy bear because it protects you most of the time, the monkey (i know its not an item but it was cool having him.) because he attacks instead of protects and the bottle rocket because it does a lot of damage.
Graphics: the graphics are awesome. they are just awesome for a old school game like earthbound. 9/10
Sound: the music in this game is really good. it changes depending on where you are i dont mean likein most games but i mean like specific places like if your in a house or a hotel. 9/10
Addictiveness: this game is addicting but once you die so many times against a boss it starts to get boring untill you finaly finish the boss. 6/10
Story: the story is really good. a fly comes back in time from ten years in the future just to tell ness that he is the chosen one and that he has to defeat giygas. 8/10
Depth: considering the HP that i heard one of the bosses has and what the level limit is (i dont know if there is one but if there  is its over 500 i think) thisis a very long game. 9/10
Difficulty: i havent found this game difficult YET but i think it will get way harder than it is now. its hard to save up money and sometimes to level up depending on the enemies in the area that you are in. 8/10
Overall: overall i love this game. i have never played a game like this in my life and i just love it. its so fun to play and it reccomend it to everyone. 9.5/10
i hope you liked my review

Earthbound Review :)   claudevandog
*Sigh* I love Earthbound. It's my favorite video game (despite the fact that my favorite game changes a lot.) So I'm going to review it. So Earthbound, unlike most RPGs that take place in mid-evil times takes place in the real world. Your character (Ness) wakes up one night from the sound of a meteorite. So he decides to investigate. While he investigates he finds his annoying neighbor Pokey, who a little later in the game tells you that he we watching his bro Picky, when he lost him (great big brother, am I right?) Once you find him all of a sudden a fly, Buzz-Buzz comes off of the meteorite and tells you he's from the past and tells you that you need to fight agent the evil alien Giygas. Then when you get to Pokey's house Pokey's Mom steps on Buzz-Buzz, crushing him to eternal sleep (aka death.) But before he dies he gives you the sound stone, in witch your supposed to collect the eight melodies and beat Giygas. Right off the bat when you play you will see that the dialog is very crazy. And that's what's fun about Earthbound. Talking to everyone is so fun. Now before I tell you every detail of the game, let me tell you the overall ratings.
GRAPHICS: 8 - Not the best for the SNES, but still pretty good. SOUND: 10 - This game has an INSANELY good soundtrack with over 100 great, funny, and even creepy songs. ADDICTIVENESS: 10 - This game will make you want to keep playing until you go blind. I'm not kidding. You will keep playing it forever. STORY: 10 - Not only is there a lot to the story, but there are a lot of side quests too. And you wont wanna miss a single one of them. DEPTH: 10 - Like I said there are lotsa side quests, but even then the game takes a long time to beat without them. Not only that, but in the ending you get to walk all around the over world and talk to everyone again! DIFFICULTY: 4 - RPGs are not that hard, and this one is no different. OVERALL: 10 - This game. That's all I can say because of it's awesomeNESS.
WARNING: SOME SPOILERS AHEAD! TURN BACK NOW IF YOU DON'T WANT THE END OF THE GAME SPOILED! At the end of the game you will have four characters: Ness, Paula, Jeff, and Poo (Yes. His name is Poo.) Once you have all eight melodies and fought Ness's Nightmare in Magicant. Then you will go to Saturn Valley, where you will be asked to go back to the meteorite and get a piece of it for the P Phase Disorder. Then you will have to have your brains implanted into robots to go to the cave of the past. Once you make it there you will find the lair of Giygas. Once you walk up to the Devils Machine, your face will be in the eye of it (odd.) But then someone that looks like a pig wearing cloths comes in front of you. And its none other than... POKEY! HE'S BEEN WORKING FOR GIYGAS THE WHOLE TIME! So than you have to fight Pokey himself. But after you beat him, he turns off the Devils Machine, and one of the creepiest final battles begins. The first phase of creepy Giygas is like a normal battle, but after that Giygas is no longer possible to defeat. So what do you do? You Pray. And it makes Giygas's HP go down. Then soon, you will run out of people to pray to, and you end up praying to the best person in Earthbound. The player him/herself. Then Giygas will die. The war will be over, and you get to play the ending.
FROM THIS POINT ON THE SPOILERS ARE OVER! So if you have not played Earthbound, YOU HAVE TO! The game may cost a lot, but that's what Vizzed.com is for! Thanks for reading and if you want rate it! ~claudevandog

Best RPG ever!   austin5141
This is the best RPG ever. This game is pretty easy, but it is long. You hardly ever have to grind for EXP, you can get levels just by playing through the game and fighting any enemy you see. You may have to grind at some points, but you level up fast. This game has an amazing soundtrack. It may be slow and boring at the beginning, but it gets way better.  The game has an awesome story line. I am not going to spoil anything, so click the play button and have a fun time. Trust me, you will love it.

this great game   FFFighterDill
ok first lets take a bit of the trip which made this adventure happen. The small town of Onett where Ness resides sleeping in his bed then suddenly a huge crash had woken him up sneaking downstairs and out the door, he can see the police have already arrived, up the hill he spots what the crash was, a meteor, and pokey who immediately sends Ness back home. After sleeping some more Ness is awoken by knocking going down stairs and to the door he finds no other, then pokey, pokey had lost his little brother picky near the meteor. Climbing up the hill while bashing runaway dogs and crows he finds picky, who was sleeping under a tree. He says pokey ran away besides him. They were about to leave when suddenly the meteor opens up and reveals a bee, NOT. His name is Buzz Buzz and came back to the past to inform ness about Giygas, the evil entity that will destroy the world. After walking down the Hill there stop by a machine named, Starman Junior, sent by giygas to kill Buzz Buzz. After Defeating the machine they taked pokey and picky back home, in which they got a spanking. Buzz Buzz flying over to pokeys mom ( I don't want use her name) she openly smashes the "dung beetle". After a short talk with Buzz Buzz he hands ness the sound stone and tells him to go to the 8 sanctuaries and collect the melodies and stop giygas. After walking out the door and the sun Rising Ness's adventure finally began.
the graphics of the game are great for the SNES standard's comparable to todays graphics but still great
the sound is very catchy in some parts of the game like the sanctuary melodies or the more infamous Pokey means Business
the game has a big replay value after you beat the game it has a lot to do (like making challenges when your playing, like a no equip run)
the story is pretty big and what you saw of the story was the first few minutes of the game, yep its a BIG game with tons of fun stuff to do in there
this game can have some very easy or challenging enemies depending on how your strategy is on beating them
its a relative easy game once your get the hang of it but it can whoop your butt in seconds if your not prepared with like food, equipment, ECT

When my friend told me about this game I thought I would try it out. I thought it would be another average game but when I first started playing this game I was amazed. With all of the catchy tunes and weird enemies, I got suddenly addicted to Earthbound. You are a young boy who must set out and defeat the evil emperor Giygas. With three friends that help you along the way this game's depth is really outstanding. Whether you are in Threed fighing zombies and ghosts or you are paying off the Runaway Five's debt, the game's addictiveness never seizes to fail. Overall I think this is one of the best SNES games I have ever played and I highly recommend it.

Earthbound... One of the best games.   GameBoy1023

Earthbound…..  One of the best games.  I am here to review it because I took an interest in Earthbound a month ago. Let’s – a – go! (Mario would say THAT, However ,  Ness would say FUZZY PICKLES!)

So…. Let’s get on with this review!

Graphics – 9

Earthbound…. It was released for SNES, Planned for the NES, The SNES came so quick, This is the second Earthbound/Mother game. Yeah.

Sound – 10

Well, the sound..  It actually fits my needs very well, and the sound is Very good.

The BEST track would have to be Frank/New Age Retro Hippie Battle. It kinda sounds like a Texas cowboy draw. (Just My opinion)

Addictiveness – 10

So….. Addictive! ( I swear, when I get my Tri-Console, (It was at a game store for 70.00 that was a NES, SNES, and Sega Genisis.) I will try to own this game for it.)

It’s REALLY addicting, I play it about twice a day, But it can get boring to some people.

Story – 7

I’ll tell the story.

It is the year 199X. A boy named “Ness” lives in “Eagleland”, And wakes up in the middle of the night when a Meteorite Crashes in “Onett”, A small town in “Eagleland”.

He asks his Mother  to go look at it, And “Porky” (Or Pokey) His best friend, Blocks the way, Also with Police and Roadblocks. He goes back home, Just to find “Porky” at the knocking door. He has to look for his Brother, “Picky”. When they leave, A sound from the Meteorite comes, “Porky” Asks “Do you hear a buzzing  sound? Turns out a Fly named “Buzz Buzz” comes out from the meteorite.

He tells the story how he is from 10 years in the future. He says that “all is devastation.” A Alien named “Gigyas” has taken over the world. He also tells Ness and friends that “3 boys, and one girl… Must save the world from Gigyas.”

That is a REALLY deep storyline, But Buzz Buzz makes the Storyline stale. It’s still a great game, Including the storyline.

Difficulty – 9

This is a REALLY hard game. The more battles you encounter, The harder it gets.

I can’t even find “Paula”, the girl that Buzz Buzz Mentioned.

So, My review of EarthBound has a over all rating OF……. *DRUMROLL PLEASE!*

*hum dee dee dum drum ROLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL…… Drum Dum!*

JUST A few more seconds…. *Drum Drum Hum Drum ROLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL…..*

Overall Rating – 10!!!!!!

Well, I gotta admit, This was a Great game! You gotta try it! It’s not because I’m supporting Mother3fan5, it’s just a great game, In my opinon! I really like It! (I do not recommend this to any RPG players, Because this is one.)

Well, I am Gameboy1023, And I will see ya later! (Maybe in my new house….. You’ll never know.)

Earthbound: A must-play for any fan of RPGs.   M4g1cW4rr10r
Graphics: 9
The game looks very beautiful and colorful, the graphics are great, and the background is nicely detailed. The character's sprites usually only have a two frame walking animation. But the real show is when you go into a battle...
Sound: 9
I love the music and sound effects in the game, having a lot of personal favorites. The music can be very cheery, sad, frantic, music changing depending on the enemy you're fighting, it's great. This game also has a lot of relaxing pieces, especially after defeating a major boss.
Addictiveness: 10
This game is extremely addictive and fun to play. For an RPG, this is one of my top 10 favorites that I always seem to come back to when I can.
Story: 9
The story is about a alien empire trying to take over the planet. Your tutorial guide tells you that three boys and a girl face Giygas in an intergalactic war. You don't see this in games a lot, usually there's some motivation, but these are just oddball kids, doing what no one else can, all with the three pieces of success; Courage, wisdom, and friendship. In fact, this triangle is so powerful, they can actually beat up police officers.
Depth: 10
Your tutorial guide gives you a task to carry out before his end, which is to go to eight different locations and record music. Sounds easy enough, right? Nope. This is a pretty long game we have here. You can't just go to your objective, you need to do other things first to advance, help other people, get items, and other stuff. Every character also has his/her own personality and is lovable and memorable in some way.
Difficulty: 5
This game isn't technically 'hard', and it's more where you need to use your skills effectively and accordingly on your opponent. Some enemies cannot be killed simply hammering away with your attacks, sometimes you need to use your skills to your advantage. If you need to learn a certain skill, you can fight enemies on the overworld and earn enough experience. Even if you don't know how to progress through the story line, there's a area to get hints telling you how to progress.
Overall: 9.4
Earthbound has, and always will be a great game in the SNES library.

Game of a Lifetime   katie.rae
This game is amazing. I have played through it I don't know how many times. Nor do I know how many more times I will play through it. This boy Ness was just trying to get some sleep and he ends up on a journey to save the world! He meets some strange and interesting people on the way. He also makes great friends who together they take on the challenge of being kid heroes! This game has a lot of quirky jokes and reference's. This game had me laughing, sad at times, and of course mad! Be sure to save! But sometimes you just cant help it because you go through a long area with no save point until after the boss. Here's where the mad comes in (if you die). This game can be easy or hard. I thought it was the hardest game ever when I first played it. Now I look back and think "man there are way harder games" BUT this will always and forever be one of my favorite games. Also one of the games I know every inch of. And to me if you love a game that much, it doesn't matter how well you know it you will still play through it over and over!

EarthBound = A Game that rocks.   Mother3fan5
OVERALL- 10
Oh...my Goodness..... This game just downright goes beyond belief. This game amazed me when I played it around 2008, and It still does. Honestly, this game doesn't beat its sequel, but it's still up in ranks.
You play as heroes that are around the 11- 13 range while defeating aliens, using magical abilities known as PSI, and travel around Eagleland and many more places to defeat the alien Giygas.
GRAPHICS- 8.1
The graphics didn't really catch my interest. Most things are pixellated, but there are good points to the game, and they all go into the battle system. The game gets easy, since your Hit Points scroll down when damage is taken. But onto the Graphical part. Most of the enemies you fight aren't pixellated, and they actually look pretty nice. (Though most of them are pretty strange.....) And sweet goodness, I LOVE the animations for PSI, mostly PSI Rockin's. I know the others are little lines or blocks on the screen, but I find them really enjoyable. ^_^
Oh yea, and Giygas is so well put that it makes him even creepier >_> <_<
SOUND- 10
Now this beyond goes beyond imagination.
This game's music is downright BEASTLY. I enjoy every bit of the music, from battle against a weak opponent, to the cave theme, to Kraken of the Sea. I usually get up and dance to the music, it's just THAT enjoyable to me. I REALLY dance to "Porky Means Business".
Now onto the sound effects. I love the sound of the PSI attacks more than I do the looks. Again, PSI Rockin' tops them all. :D
Onto more effects. I love every bit of them, honestly. The battle victory fanfare, the level- up jingle, the fully restored noise, etc....
ADDICTIVENESS- 10
MY GOODNESS I PLAY THIS GAME NONSTOP.
The storyline is pretty amazing, and the effects are absolutely brilliant. With all of that along with the epic music, I could go a whole 24 hours without eating or sleeping. T_T
STORY- 9.4
Ness, a 13 year old boy who has had a red cap and PSI since he was a baby,  has a destiny. It is prophesied that 3 boys and Girl, the Chosen 4, will rise and defeat the embodiment of Evil, Giygas. Ness is one of these 4. He must travel to every "Your Sanctuary" location, defeat the monsters that Guard the 8 Sanctuaries, collect the 8 melodies and record them on the sound stone, and join power with the Earth's, and defeat Giygas. He meets and travels with the other 3, Paula, Jeff, and Poo.
While travelling they must endure hardships, sadness, and much more.
DEPTH- 10
This game really has alot to offer.
The game has a huge and developed RPG battle system, decent controls, a massive storyline, every main character with a backstory, and it may take a little more than 4 or 5 days to beat. This is also why I really love this game.
DIFFICULTY- 7.1
This game was honestly pretty difficult.
Even though you have scrolling hit points, if you don't grind levels at least once, you could have some trouble at some points, as most of the later enemies have some devastating attacks. You gotta make sure you get the best items and equipment you can, or else you'll probably get really ticked off......
CONCLUSION
I HIGHLY recommend you play this wonderful game. with a good story, a wonderful battle system, and lots of surprises, this may be the RPG just for you. :D

The game that is like Kirby Super Star and it's similar to the Mother franchise.   DannyMyers1978
Earthbound is one of those classical games when people just take it so interesting. I am really a Ness fan. Seriously, he is a cool character. I did played this game but naturally, this game is like that SNES Zelda game. For people who had really love this game, it is probably sure that you saw Ness in the Super Smash Bros. Franchise.
Recently, Earthbound is similar to the Mother franchise. The Mother franchise has classical songs, cool game play and mostly it has cool nostalgia.
The graphics are cool enough like Kirby Super Star that many people can make it nostalgic on YouTube. Normally, it is like collaborations on Newgrounds whenever they put it on Newgrounds as a collab.
The sound is similar to the Super Nintendo Mother game. It is probably cool and awesome for it. Normally, it is just natural for it to take it to the nostalgia on Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
The game is not addictive enough, if there was a contest to see which addictiveness has much more sense, it will probably another Super Nintendo Entertainment System game like Super Mario World, Super Mario All Stars, Kirby Super Star, Starfox, That Super Nintendo Zelda game and basically Super Mario RPG thanks to it's 3D graphics, which basically that Super Mario RPG is poor enough that it cannot be seen on any collaborations and videos on Newgrounds and YouTube.
The story is cool that it is really awesome. It is really nice that it might be really nostalgic from the game. But the depth is really the same as the story.
The difficulty is the same as the Super Nintendo Zelda game. I cannot really get away from the Earthbound hometown and it is really boring to get out of there. I cannot really understand the walkthroughs. For some reason, it is really that difficult.
Overall, the game is awesome and nostalgic. The game must really that epic enough for it's RPG battles and such. Naming the characters is really that difficult like it's your own story. Like for some reason, it might be more rare for the English version of Earthbound and the Mother franchise. The Japanese version of those games is really that popular that you can see it everywhere around the whole world. You can really see the Japanese Earthbound Rom so normally on any ROM website. The Japanese Mother is so popular and it is everywhere also. So rare for it's English versions of the Earthbound franchise and the Mother franchise. Recently, the characters are cool and some of them are really that wimpy, weak, scared-cat-like and mostly afraid of anything. That I am describing the blond kid on Earthbound which is really the same as Super Smash Bros Brawl. Luckily, Ness is really that much cool enough that he is tough, strong and bad ass like the Sugar Bear from the Golden Crisp (mostly Sugar Crisp for it's popularity.) If Ness has it's kind of cereal on Kellogg's just like the Mario and Zelda cereals. It is really that awesome that the commercials are like memes. While the cereals are so rare, that you can only see somebody's cereal box on a photo sharing website. For the conclusion, Earthbound is cool that many people love it, including me.

Earthbound a Classic   poopiepook@aol...
This game is an overall 9, with points taken off for not using the SNES graphics to the full potential, especially with small characters like the ones in this game.
The graphics are like high developed NES, with better movement characteristic of the SNES.  But I gave it an 8 because hey, what do you expect for the time this came out.
The sound is better than most games, but doesn't touch the Final Fantasy games in epic composition that you remember for life (a bow to Final Fantasy 1 and 7).
The addictiveness is a 10, with a 9 for storyline and 10 for depth, because it totally hooks you from the moment you play.  I still remember the warm fuzzy feeling I had starting this game so long ago, and a large part of what makes a game memorable is you become emotionally invested quickly in the characters and their story.  The main character is just an average kid, just like we were (or are!).
I had no major problems playing this game, and I would say this game, in comparison with early games like Maniac Mansion, is relatively easier.  I never even considered going online to find out how to beat certain areas of the game, like I often did with Final Fantasy I, A Boy and His Blob, or Maniac Mansion.
Overall this game is excellent for all ages, and can be recommended for a child's first RPG experience.

Earthbound review   Raymanrulz
This is a very good RPG. I love to photos that the Photo Man takes during the game, while it gets on the annoying side sometimes, it's still a good feature. Earthbound has a good story, great music, and some very good graphics compared to other games I've played (I'd even say better than ones on the DS!).  While Earthbound is hard, it's not I want to blow it up hard, and so has found a good balance. I would rather play through this again than play another game in the series like Mother 3. The sound, in a word, is fantastic. While it can get on your nerves at time, this game has fairly good graphics, good music, an addictive story line, and a good difficulty. I would highly recommend this the anyone looking for a RPG or new game to try. While Earthbound isn't perfect, I'd say it comes close. So, over all, I rate it a 9.5.

Its alright   mscoral
I give the overall game a decent review. Its not my favorite, but its not my least favorite either.
Graphics: I give it a low grade, but that is because the graphics are very fuzzy, and not all that detailed. Of course I know this is a classic game, so back then the graphics were pretty decent. I just don't like how you cant see the persons face when you talk to them. The faces of the people are fuzzy and not well detailed, which makes the graphics not all that interesting.
Sound: The sound is actually pretty good. It doesn't usually skip around a lot, so I say the sound is decent. Although when you are fighting an animal or a person, the music somewhat drones out, and it becomes fuzzy. While you are walking around, the music is better then while you are fighting. The fighting music is not interesting at all, and it makes it kind of a boring fight.
Addictivness: The game is moderately addicting. It keeps you wanting to play just a little bit more just to find out what happens with Ness. However, I enjoy walking around more then fighting, because as I said before, the fighting tends to be very dry. Although, it is still a pretty good game if you like turn based style. I happen to not be a big fan of that, but everyone is different.
Story: The story is amazing. It is very creative, and has a lot of background to it. It is a very different story then what I am use to. A lot of games tend to revolve around the same thing. Either saving the princess, or completing quests. However, this is a completely different plot that what I am use to. It adds a bunch of different characters, and you get to personalize the your character in the beginning.
Depth: The depth is alright. You get to know your characters throughout the plot line, although it doesn't add much detail as to who they are (Such as their background) Although this game goes into a moderate amount of depth with Ness (as it should) It makes it interesting to learn more about him, especially since people liked him in super smash brothers. I was always interested in Ness's background and history, and I finally got to delve into it.
Difficulty: This game is pretty hard. It is very easy at first, but defeating the bosses prove to be challenging. It easy to fight however, as it is turn based. Moving around is also pretty easy, but if you are a first timer, like me, I had no idea what to do almost throughout the entire game. It proved to be very interesting however, as I had no idea what to do.
Overall, this game is alright. Give it a try for five minutes and see if you like it or not. I'm sure there will be a lot of mixed feelings about this game.

Earthbound: a strange, childish game   janus

In the heydays of the 16-bit consoles, RPGs were a dominant kind of game. There was Final Fantasy, Shining Force, Phantasy Star, Dragon Warrior… and Earthbound. I never played the NES version (Mother), so I can’t tell of any links between the two. But now that I have played that game nearly 20 years after its release I have to wonder why I like it so much…

Graphics: 6/10

The graphics are definitely subpar for the time (1995). There is absolutely no 3D effect in the game, and whatever cutscenes there are (flying Jeff’s Sky Runner, the bus rides) they get very tiring and they can’t be skipped. Hell, the Sky Runner does the EXACT SAME run both ways to and from Winter.

And yet, this is one of the very few 16-bit games where you can move your characters 360 degrees (rather than “in squares” like almost every other game). This is essential for the battle system; you can see the enemies coming at you, and if they catch you from behind they get the advantage. This is also essential if you want to walk “properly” as some cities like Foursides are at an angle. If you try to simply walk with the four traditional directions you will have a hard time.

Otherwise the graphics are respectable in themselves. Since the heroes are children (literally: like 8 years old) their sprites are small but clear. They are not over pixelated like the adults, whose heads are oversized compared to their bodies. You can see Ness’ baseball cap, Jeff’s glasses and Poo’s pony tail. Paula is probably the best-drawn female figure in this game. Most other females (except your mom) have oversized mouths like Princess Toadstool in Super Mario Bros. 1. It’s especially ugly when you see the “shopping ladies” in department stores, whose body barely show that they are women.

The environment you evolve in is also well-designed. Perspective is usually logical, although Foursides’ buildings are so tall that, I guess, it was hard to make it completely logical. No two cities are alike and they all have neat features: Onett’s city center is bustling with life, Twoson is a little smaller and quieter, Foursides looks like a Metropolis, Summer is by the beach, Winter is covered in snow… There is even a desert, sand dunes with pyramids, a huge swamp and a “Lost World” with dinosaurs. The dungeons are less varied, however, especially those of “Your Sanctuary.” They all look like regular caves, and other than slight changes in color they could all be the same.

Finally the battle screen is almost a setback to the NES era. You don’t see your character nor their physical attacks. You only see the enemies you hit flash, and they are completely still – they don’t even flash. I said almost because there is some variety in the fights. The background is ever-changing with mostly psychedelic forms that move. Also there was some attention given to magic. There stronger it is, the more complex the animation; the high-level star storm looks like it hurts a lot, freeze would kill anyone instantly while Ness’ special spell could cause seizing in sensitive people.

Music: 7/10

Music is a mixed bag. The soundtrack definitely gets higher points for its incredible variety. There is a different theme for each and every place you visit with very few repetitions. Some of the differences are very subtle (like the Your Sanctuary caves), but difference for villages and town is obvious. The music even matches some places very well; Winter has a Christmas-y theme, the Tenda theme makes them look even shier than they are, Scaraba has a very Arabic feel, Summer sounds like a quiet beach resort… There are also too many battle themes for me to count them. Seriously: there are like 10 of them! And sometimes boss battles are played as if it were a regular battle.

The realism of the arrangements, however, does not live up to what the SNES sound chip could do. Sure, there are some excellent tracks like the Runaway Five concert (that sounds very jazzy), Foursides’ bar (which sounds like a 1950s jazz bar) and Dalaam, which has a good “Eastern” feel. However the battle themes, for the most part, sound to synthesized and lack the epicness of battles themes even Sega did better with Shining Force II. Moonside’s loop is so short that it sounds merely like background noise.

It gets worse with the sound effects. The few good ones (the arcade in Onett, the healing butterfly) are no match for the NES-level sound effects from battles. Every single physical attack sounds the same – like folded metal – and your actions/the enemies’ sound so primitive I can’t even describe it. Also, some realistic sounds like Buzz Buzz, er, fly sounds and the slimes’ burping are annoying. Only magic really stands out; fire sounds like it’s burning, freeze sounds like you are breaking the enemy with ice and star storm sounds like it’s coming from another galaxy.

Addictiveness: 8/10

I first played the game when I was 12 and got hooked up to it instantly. In hindsight I can still see why people would find this game interesting.

For starters it was one of the only (the only?) game of the era that was set “today,” i.e. the 20th century. Everything around you looks modern: there are cars in the street, roads are paved, you get money from an ATM, you get to use phones or payphones, you buy your food from fast-food outlets and medicine from drugstores, etc. You even get as close to cell phones as could be for 1995 with the receiver phone. It’s mostly your dad telling you to stop, but also an inventor who tells you about his new findings. Even Final Fantasy VII was still incorporating Medieval tones with Aerith’s proximity to the Earth (although the PHS was a most realistic cell phone). Hell, the librarian even tells you to bring back the map book in 2001.

I also found the links to pop culture interesting. In Moonside you get to fight Dali’s clocks, Winter hosts the Loch Ness monster (and also Stonehenge), you get to visit the Pyramids (with its hyperactive hieroglyphs) and the Sphinx, you get to travel in a “yellow submarine”, find truffles using a pig nose … Granted, only “old” gamers like myself are likely to get them.

Story: 4/10

One night while you were sleeping quietly, you are awaken by a loud boom. A meteorite just crashed near your house. Upon investigating it closer, a fly “from the future” appears and tells you that you are the chosen one to stop the devastation that’s imminent because of the Gigyas. You even narrowly escape one of them who also came from the future. So it is your mission to record eight sounds with your stone in order to grow strong enough to win, but also to recruit “two boys and a girl” to assist you.

Back when the game was released, a video game critic rated the game at like 68 percent because of the game’s childish tone. I now sympathize with his view and agree wholeheartedly. This game has, to quote a French expression, “No head nor tail.”

First of all, how many times has a game with a hero who is “destined” to save the world from doom? At least games like the Dragon Warrior on the NES had an “excuse” to make the scenario so: you were a descendant of a once great hero who conquered evil. But here? Your quest is bestowed to you out of the blue.

Second, elements of the story are also dropped out of the blue. Once you reach Twoson and go to sleep, you get telepathic communication from Paula, whom you never even met. And when you are stuck in Threed, you also communicate telepathically to Jeff, whom you still haven’t met (Paula even says it: “I’m your friend you’ve never met.”) Finally to fight Gygias you have to warp to the past… as a robot. Again, what the hell? I thought Gygias devastated the future; how were they able to warp in the past?

Depth: 5/10

These (seemingly) random elements affect the depth of the game. There is absolutely no character development whatsoever. Only Ness gets a little once you get your Sound Stone full and get into your mind, and even then… This therefore makes you wonder who the hell is Pokey and why is he traveling the world looking for powerful people to get acquainted with. At least in Final Fantasy IV Golbez’ story made sense in the end. But here, Pokey is just another annoying feature dropped out of the blue.

Despite these senseless elements dropped at random, the game has nevertheless a lot to offer. Your quest is still an epic journey where you will have much more to do than just collect the music with your Sound Stone. You first have to accomplish a thousand little things like free Threed from its zombies, Happy Valley from its cultish Mr. Carpainter, rescue Mr. Saturn from the evil Master Belch… These details helped in making the game more interesting.

Difficulty: 4/10

Considering the light-hearted mood of the game, the game is very easy to play.

First, gaining levels is done at lightning speed. By that I mean that you can stay in an area and increase your levels in less than 10 battles (my personal gauge for speed) for a long time. In particular, once you conquer a Your Sanctuary location all the enemies run away from you. This means that you not only will have the first strike, but you might also be able to kill them without even having to fight. This is especially useful in the Lumin Hall cave, where the Fubby monsters can give you nearly 5k experience each.

Also, even for people with poor dexterity like me can easily avoid being caught from behind by pressing the right arrow in order to face the enemy. Hell, you can profit from your after-battle “invincibility” (you are flashing for a few seconds) to catch enemies from behind and get the first strike. Be careful with that one though; you can be caught from behind too if you’re not careful.

In addition, you can buy teddy bears that will take physical damage on your behalf (and even status-inducing attacks). They are not invincible of course, and will eventually end up in “a pile of fluff.” Nevertheless they are very cheap and are easy to find.

Some of the difficulty, however, can make the game very frustrating. The worst of it all is being “mushroomized.” That mushroom on your head will change randomly how you walk, making it hard to walk to someone who can harvest it (and they are usually not in a hospital). Also, because the hero is so young he sometimes gets homesick and doesn’t want to fight. It can get frustrating when you can’t have access to a phone so he can talk to his mom (but I believe that talking to his dad can do). Finally your inventory is ridiculously limited. Being dressed from head to toe takes up four full spaces, leaving very little for something else, including vital accessories and food.

In conclusion, I’m not sure I can recommend this game for people who are over age 15. It has a childish tone (and not in a good way), the story is completely random, has barely any development and it’s technically inferior to most games of the era.

Earthbound: A SMAAAASHING Game   sonic3321
Today I will be reviewing Earthbound. We will find out if the game is a SMAAAASH or just a miss. If you've read the title, you already know the answer. Let's find out why I like it so much.
Graphics: 8
Remember, this is still a SNES game. That being said, the graphics were really good for the time. The enemy designs were really well done.
Sound: 8
The sound design is really good. The soundtrack is full of jams (my particular favorite being the Sanctuary Guardian theme), and that "SMAAAASH" sound effect is like candy to my ears (unless I'm on the receiving end of it.) There are actually quite a few references to famous songs in the game. Here are some examples:
West of Onett, you find a man playing a trumpet. The song he plays after you talk to him is actually Dvorak's "Symphony No. 9 Movement 2".
The music that plays when fighting a weak opponent sounds like "Tequila" by The Champs.
The beginning of the song that plays when fighting Frank or a hippie sounds like "Johnny B. Goode" by Chuck Berry.
The music in Moonside is a distorted version of "The Star Spangled Banner".
The Dungeon Man theme uses a drum beat that sounds like the drums in "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" by The Beatles.
Addictive: 10
Though the gameplay is pretty linear, it is so much fun to keep playing over and over.
Story: 8
I think the story for the game is really good. Basically, Ness and 3 other kids have to work together to destroy Giygas.
Depth: 5
The game is pretty linear, you have to go from place to place fighting monsters (typical RPG stuff). The game doesn't really have a lot of things to do on the side.
Difficulty: 6
Like most RPGs the difficulty really depends on how much stronger you are. If you grind a lot and level up a lot, the game will be a cake walk. If you hardly grind, the game is going to be a nightmare.
The hardest part about the game is not the enemies, it's roaming around not knowing where you are going. This was such a huge issue that the game came with the strategy guide.
Overall: 9.4
The game is REALLY good and I enjoy playing through it multiple times.

Earthbound: This review stinks!   Popeye116
Ness is an average boy living in the average town of Onett. He lives a happy, average life with his family. But this all changes one day, when a meteorite lands on the ground near his house. Soon, Ness finds out that he and 3 others are destined to save the world! This is what starts  Earthbound, a game praised for it’s originality and wackiness. Here I will critique this amazing game for all of its aspects, good and bad. Although I enjoyed the game immensely, this is an unbiased review.
Sound: 9
The music and sound effects in this game are amazing and captivating. You’ll find yourself humming along to tunes such as Onett’s theme and the “New Age Retro Hippie” ‘s theme. Most of Earthbound’s overworld songs feature brass and horn instruments. The different music in this game truly fits the atmosphere and area that the character is in. Warm music with laughing and ocean sounds is found in the resort city. Merry, Christmas-y music is found in the snowy city. The caves play mysterious, quiet songs, without making it too scary or not scary enough. Then, there’s the battle music. The battle music is catchy, but it tends to get repetitive after a while. This is the reason I gave the sound a 9 rather than a 10. Altogether, though, the music in Earthbound is one of the factors that really makes the game great. It was one of the most enjoyable parts of the game. I commend the composers for doing such a great job with the music and sound effects.
Graphics: 8
The graphics in Earthbound are charming. The overworld graphics add spice and flavor to the game as a whole. Many games’ overworlds are plain and boring, but Earthbound just isn’t the case. There are cheery, colorful themes when appropriate and dark, gloomy themes when appropriate. The overworlds truly fit the feeling of their specific area. Then, there’s the battle graphics. These are a huge improvement compared to the ones in Mother 1 (AKA Earthbound Zero), which were just plain black backgrounds. Colorful, kaleidoscope-esque backgrounds are made in Earthbound, making the battles just that much more interesting. Admittedly, though, I believe the backgrounds could have been better. I would have found it more interesting if the creators made the background akin to the where the battles are taking place. The enemy sprites in the overworld could also use some work. This is why I rated the graphics as an 8. But, the combination of the graphics and music in this game create a wonderful experience. It’s one of the reasons the game is so amazing.
Addictiveness: 7
Earthbound is a pretty addicting game. A single session could range anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours. It definitely makes you want to keep playing, but it’s not exactly a game you are going to replay many times. Another thing is, when you want to complete a certain thing, you get so addicted you keep playing until you complete it. One example is getting the Sword of Kings. People can spend 6+ hours in one sitting just to get this weapon (I got this weapon after approximately 3 hours of farming). You’ll have to play it to understand, but this game really is addicting.
Story:8
Earthbound has a surprisingly good story. As I said in my introduction, you start out as a boy living a normal life. Then, you find out you must save the world with 3 others. Did I mention that you have psychic powers? You must then go to 8 of the “Your Sanctuary” locations to record the Sound Stone melodies. From then, you go on to defeat Giygas, the evil mastermind! The story of the game is amazing due to the foreboding darkness seen in it. For a good amount of the game, it’s just silly battles and funny themes. Then, it very suddenly takes a turn for the worse. I won’t reveal any spoilers, but the story gets better. The writing of the game is done greatly, and the writers seem to have put a lot of thought into what was said in the game. There are also a couple of silly lines for everyone; adults and kids. But, while Earthbound has a great story, there are many games with better stories. That’s why I give the story an 8. It really is tough to explain why the story is so great. It’s one of those things you just have to experience it yourself.
Depth: 10
There are tons of things to do in Earthbound. And I mean tons. It would take a while to mention all of the things to do, so I’ll go over a couple of highlights. First of all, there’s the main story and quests. These take a long time. There’s also other things you can do. Literally every single NPC has something different to say, and it makes for funny and interesting moments. Sometimes they just say wacky things, sometimes they give you advice, sometimes they reference pop culture, and more. Sometimes they will even give you free items! This is why it’s worth talking to all the NPCs. Then, there’s the challenges. On starman.net, there are many challenges people have come up with for Earthbound. Try the 1/128 item challenge, or the T-rex bat challenge as Jeff in Winters. There’s a good chance you have no idea what I’m talking about here, but once you get into the game you will. Finally, there are tons of things to do after the game. A lot of things have changed, and you can go exploring places without worrying about monsters! It’s definitely worth trying out. This is why I give the depth of Earthbound a 10.
Difficulty: 7
This game is a lot harder than it may seem. In fact, I’ve admittedly used a walkthrough a few times to help me get past certain parts *coughcoughMASTERBELCHcoughcough*. Sometimes, although rarely, it also leaves you all alone to find out what to do with little to no hints *coughcoughMASTERBELCHcoughcough*. There are also plenty of bosses that are so hard you will have to grind enemies to beat them. The game isn’t always hard, though. Some bosses are a piece of cake, but most aren’t. Then there’s the game mechanics, which have to do with the difficulty. The mechanics don’t make the game much harder. They are akin to a typical RPG, except for two things. First of all, when you encounter an enemy, you get either a green, red, or grey swirl. This has to do with what way you are facing the enemy. If you attack the enemy from behind, you get a green swirl and you get the first move. If you both attack head on, it is a grey swirl, and whoever has more speed attacks first. If the enemy attacks you from behind, you get a red swirl, and they attack first. This is a useful and realistic mechanic, and it adds a bit more strategy to the game. Then, there’s the battle scrolling. Earthbound is different from other RPGs in that when you are hit, your health doesn’t go down immediately. It scrolls down quickly. This is useful so that if you are hit with mortal damage, you can heal yourself the next turn and not die. It’s a really awesome and unique mechanic and it changes up battling a lot. These combined reasons are why I give the difficulty a 7
Overall: 9.1
Altogether, Earthbound is an awesome game. From the silly lines to the wacky characters, to the rpg gameplay and sometimes dark themes, it truly is a game for everybody. The ingredients of the sound and graphics mix together to create a delectable experience. The huge depth of the game creates addicting gameplay. Then, the story is so great that you will power through the difficulty to complete the game. The replay value will have you coming back for more. I highly recommend playing this game online. It’s worth it. In case you don’t believe me yet, the price for a cartridge of Earthbound goes for $900. That’s how great the game is (And why you should play it online using an emulator instead). This is why Earthbound, all together, is a 9.1/10.

One of the best SNES games of all time.   AceShock
This is my first ever gamer review, and it's for one of the best games for the SNES, Earthbound.
Graphics-10
The graphics in the game are really great, some have incredible detail, The game's Overworld has many details and hidden secrets. The battle sprites are also very well pixelated, and have very cool and unique backgrounds that show in very different ways. There are simply no bad graphics in the game.
Sound-10
Every sound in the game is music to my ears. There are many types of music in the game, from calm and peaceful loving themes, to the boss battle themes that are all crazy! The game's music is very catchy, and most of its very unique to the surrounding. There are certain bosses who get their own special theme, and they all pretty much sound good, and they usually never get old.
AddictiveNESS (Bad pun XD) -10
When I say this game is addictive, I mean it's REALLY ADDICTIVE. There's so much stuff to do, like saving the world, getting maximum stats, exploring dungeons, fighting the bad guys to become stronger. And it's so much fun with 3 other people to enjoy the world saving. That addictive fun won't go away for a while, even after you beat the game, you can still be addicted to the extra game glitches and post events!
Story- 10
The way the story starts out is one night, a meteor crashes in your town, you decide to go outside, and you try to investigate, you get sent home, and go back to sleep... Until your obnoxious neighbor knocks on your front door. You head on outside, but first you must change out of your "Jammies". You then head out with nothing but a cracked bat, with your pet dog, your neighbor and your courage, and start the big adventure. There is much more leading after these events in the story, and there are many important things that you must do afterward.
Depth-10
This game has an Incredible amount of stuff to do. It has a long journey with all kinds of fun, and even after the final battle, you can still explore all around. You have to find the other chosen 3 that are entrusted with saving the world, you have to fight many, many soldiers of The Villain's army. You met many, many characters throughout the game, you can find ultimate weapons for your team, that are very rare, you can collect them all, you can buy all sorts of food, you go throughout the world, and it's filled with mystery, and excitement everywhere.
Difficulty-5
This game has very easy controls, they're very easy to learn, but there are some areas where super strong bosses and enemies, where you might get K.O.'ed, and some can inflict some status effects that could do terrible damage, other times your level just won't get high enough, but still, you can eventually overcome the evil, and progress through the game.
OVERALL-9.7
This is a very good game, with near perfect graphics, beautiful and wondrous sound, incredibly addictive, Plenty of depth, and the difficulty is just right. In conclusion, I hope you enjoyed my review, and this is a very good game and I would recommend it to almost everyone. So what are you waiting for? Go enjoy this wonderful SNES classic. :)

This game is great fun, you should play it at least once!   rupeescreamer
Earthbound is an obviously great game. Even from the first time you see it, you know it's something different. And the first time you boot up the game (or load it in the emulator, in the RGR's case) and hear that sweet intro theme, you know its going to be a very special game. Lets get into some of the categories of the review.
Graphics: I give graphics a 9. Sure, there have been games with greater graphics, even on the SNES, but EarthBound has a unique stylized kind of look that other games never imitated. It looks cartoony, and it's easily recognizable. The character sprites are easy to distinguish, as they stick out from the environments they're in.
Sound: I give the sound in this game a 10. The music in the game is impeccable, and as iconic and recognizable as the graphical work in the game. The song "Because I Love You" is especially notable for being a very feels-inducing track. The soundtrack definitely has the feeling that each area it plays in is going for: from the mystery of a dark, unexplored cave, to the peace of a sanctuary, to the hustle and bustle of a big city, and the tranquil peace of a small town, every song goes with the locale it plays in.
Addictiveness: I give addictiveness a 7. This game is plenty of fun, and you can play it for long periods of time. However, there are some parts of the game that simply make you not want to play, especially when the difficulty ramps up. And trust me, there are difficulty spikes, but Ill get to that in the coinciding section. However, if you're determined to beat the game, it is able to be done, of course.
Story: I give story a 9. The reason I give story a 9 is because of how it connects to the stories of Mother 1 and Mother 3. The story of the game alone is fairly good on its own, however. A meteor strikes the hilltop outside of protagonist Ness's house. Investigating, he is told by a space alien named Buzz-Buzz that Giygas, the "Universal Cosmic Destroyer", is trying to destroy the Earth, and Ness, along with three others, must put a stop to Giygas's conquest of the Earth.
Depth: I give the game's depth a 10. This game, even if it is linear, has a ton of things to do, all of which are fun and satisfying. There are rare drops from certain enemies that are extremely satisfying to get. And there are plenty of rewarding sidequests which can net you rare items.
Difficulty: 8. I give this games difficulty an 8. This game, at times, can be challenging. Of course, most games are challenging. But this game feels rewarding for when you finally overcome that one boss fight you've been struggling with.
Overall, this is a wonderful game, and it has definitely had love put into it. All the little details of this game make it a wonderful experience to play.

A Great Game!   SuperHyperSonic
So Earthbound is a very different game for its time, just about any RPG game out there at the moment had something to do with the medieval times, and had something to do with a damsel in distress. This game changed that. It brings you on a very interesting story, and gives you interesting and wacky weapons in current times! It gives you plenty of room to explore and expand upon your imagination, it doesn't include any visual representation of your character attacking, but it doesn't need to keep up how addicting the game is, there's just some charm about it that gives you that urge to play on as much as you can. I've played a lot of RPG games, and I really enjoy them, the story is easily something that could be brought into a sequel, and all the characters are very interesting! Time traveling, magic powers, baseball bats and smashing galore and you have a real fun experience! This game kind of reinvented the RPG genre by giving it a breath of fresh air, and it may be a little bit difficult to understand the controls when you first begin, but eventually it becomes second nature. The world is something to explore for loot and items, like searching trash cans for hamburgers or etc. I really can't stress enough how much of a good game it is! Being able to customize what your first Psy move is by entering your favorite thing as 'PK----" and then something after it, is a really nice touch! I love customization in RPG games and I really think its something that should be expanded upon in most others, be sure to give this game a look over, its really worth it!

I love this game.   mike345
This was the very first time I have ever played Earthbound and I think it's awesome it's an RPG game where you gain EXP points and level up. Those are the kind of games that I really enjoy playing and I hope all RPG fans will like this game too.
GRAPHICS
The graphics are just great I couldn't compare it to any other because Earthbound's graphics is just so good and makes the game really addictive and fun to play.
SOUND
Well I was playing the game without the speakers so I couldn't judge on what the sound was going to be like but I bet it's going to be awesome that goes with the graphics.
ADDICTIVENESS
When I first started playing the game I found it quit interesting, then when I got even more into the game I just wouldn't be able to stop playing it. That's what shows how addictive Earthbound really is.
STORY
The story line is great when you have to stop the evil aliens from taking over your planet after a wasp comes from a light 10 years later telling you what is going to happen.
DEPTH
The depth in this game is huge and I would like to play more of Earthbound and I hope that Nintendo could make more of these enjoyable earth bound games.
DIFFICULTY
At the start of the game I was having some difficulties in beating the bad guys at the city I always kept dying but now I got better at it so it was quite easy beating them.
OVERALL
Overall I thought the game was brilliant I would like to see more of these Earthbound games.

Earthbound   D_Man
Earthbound, this game is one of the great ones of the super Nintendo. This game is still talked about today not about game play, but they do talk about the good times they have while playing it. The graphics are great, I wouldn't call the bland back rounds in battle as art but the characters look great and so does the scenery. The music is almost perfect who doesn't remember walking around to that up beat music while wandering around Onett, the only downside was during battles it was just almost like listening to a slow beat when the music should have been energetic. It would have been nice if they had good battle music that would make the sound quality of the game perfect. It is addictive once you are hooked on to the story the game is pretty much one big story which is not bad at all if you like that sort of thing. The story has all the qualities of a good story like I said before you don't play it for the game you play it for the story. This game goes so far into depth it's almost like you're in the game you will be playing this game for a while like any good RPG and the characters are relatable and like able well most of them at least, Ness has a great back round on how he starts his journey it doesn't make much sense but it doesn't have to. The game play is ok not in battles though which has been a reoccurring issue in the game all you do is press a button and attack without an animation which isn't very fun but whats done is done this game was still great.

Such a great RPG...   gokugoku500
This is probably one of the most forgotten SNES games ever.
It has a funny but good story, unforgiving music and characters,
one of the most disturbing villains ever, and maybe one of the biggest jerks ever:
Pokey, which was later called Porky.
Lets begin:
Graphics: I do NOT care what you say. I think it has great graphics.
Ness was a bit different in SSB, but still he looks great to me.
Sound: I cant believe how some people don't remember this soundtrack.
It is a great soundtrack and if you never heard any of this games themes, you really should listen to it!
Addictiveness: ...I just cant tell how much i want to play this game.
Story: Its not just funny... Its also one of the greatest!
I don't want to spoil anything, so lets move on.
Depth: Ever tried to talk to every character in the game?
Difficulty: Just keep holding D on the first enemies.
Later on you get PSI and other stuff you have to use against enemies.
Overall, one of the most forgotten gems on 16 bit history!

A game without end   Nomore06
This game is amazing. Earthbound (or Mother 2) is a master piece of its
time. It has all RPG and the special level action of Final Fantasy and
its own brand of enemies, and game play. It has a great story line and
unique music. Unlike other characters from different games Earthbound's
characters have more emotions rather then being living plot points. It
isn't extremely difficult but it's not an easy task. This game captures
the strange yet fantastic wonders of the older games.  The only
complaint I have ever had about this game is its graphics which
sometimes, are messed up. In result, this game is one of the best I have
ever played (and that's saying a lot coming from a big time gamer like
me).

Look for a silly game. Need an adventure. New to Vizzed and wants to play easy games. Here is the answer: ...E.A.R.T.H.B.O.U.N... . Yes. Earthbound is one of the silliest, wittiest, most addictive RPG type games on the SNES.Hi, I'm Hyperflareman12, with my first game review EVER! What a great way to start with my favorite game EVER!(Next to Sonic Generation ^_^ ) It is about another red cap protagonist named Ness , a nice, kind girl named Polly(Paul-La), a white and nerdy dude named Jeff, and a warrior trained in the style of Mu named Poo (I'm serious -_-). And in a effort to stop the universal evil known as Guygis (GUY-GAS) and his evil followers. Now to get down to business. The deal with RPGs is you to think, listen, come up with a stradige ( I can't spell). You can't go head first into a battle. So if you have waiting problems go play a shooter game or something.Thank You for reading this review and more are to come. Next up is Mother 3.See you later.

Let's Review: Earthbound! With NintendoFan388!   NintendoFan388
Hey, I'm NintendoFan388, and welcome to my first review of my all time favorite game: Earthbound! First of all, before we start, I'd like to say  that I have played through the whole game, and I am including no bias in this review (Okay, maybe a little). Also, this review may contain opinions. So without further ado, let's begin!
Graphics: 10
Well, I've personally liked 8 and 16 bit graphics more than anything else, and these graphics to me are amazing. They're smooth, colorful, and impressive for their time. They never lag, and they're still fun to look back on even to this day. With all that gathered together, it gets my overall 10!
Sound: 10
Where do I begin? This music is outstanding, one of my favorite soundtracks in video games, and is personally what I think the best soundtrack on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (Yes, better than the Mega Man X games!)! Their are a lot of memorable tracks in this game, my personal favorite being "Pokey Means Business!". Overall, it's a nostalgic soundtrack and it gets my 10.
Addictiveness: 10
Seriously, this game is more addictive than anything I've ever seen before. Everyday, when I woke up, I would say to myself, "Man, I can't wait to play Earthbound today!". It's one of those RPGS that you can come back to anytime and you will not being able to stop playing for weeks. I can't tell you how many times I've played this before, and it's because this game has so much replayability it's almost abnormal. With all of this, it gets yet another 10.
Story: 8
To be honest, this game didn't have much if a story, but the amount of colorful characters makes up for that. Of course you have Ness, Paula, Jeff, and Poo, who are amazing on their own, but there are way more other characters, each one different from the rest. Some include Pokey Minch, Tony, Dr. Andonuts, Apple Kid, Orange Kid, The Runaway Five, and so many more! With these characters taken into account, it gets an 8 overall.
Depth: 8
Now, don't get me wrong, this game is ENORMOUS, and it would take a speedrunner at least an hour to beat the entire thing, but the main problem I have is that after a while it gets a bit repetitive. If you play for way too long, you think of it as "Yeah yeah, beat up enemies, defeat Sanctuary Guardian, get closer to the end of the game.". Lather, Rinse, Repeat. For this reason, it gets an 8.
Difficulty: 5
Even though this game is AMAZING, it actually isn't that hard. Once you've got used to the game's tactics, you can breeze through the game. At one point, I even got Ness to level 90. Although it can get difficult at some parts, it's a bit too easy. I think it should have had a Hard Mode after you beat the entire game, but it doesn't happen. This exact reason is why it gets a 5.
Overall: 10
Overall, this game is pure excellence and is absolutely outstanding. It is my all time favorite video game and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes video games, even if they don't like RPGS, this game will definitely get them into the genre. For all these reasons, this game gets my overall 10.
Thanks for reading!

The game is on WII U!!!!!   superkirby34
These are one of the best games I have EVER played. But the greatest part of this game that it showed up on the Wii U! The second boss of the game is quite hard because Ness is a high level when you get Paula. I tried to get paula to get her level very high but the boss keeps killing her... But anyway this game has great sound effects (SFX). With a side of AWSOME PSI graphic effects. The game is also creepy at the very end boss because of the real look at Giygas. This game will always be my favorite.

EARTHBOUND!!!!!!!This is literally my favorite game of all time.nothing is better then earthbound.except Godzilla by .1%. It can be frustrating at times and the final boss is the stuff of my childhood fears but this game is colorful, fun, light hearted, funny, quirky, but some of the enemies you battle may scare kids 1-5 or 6 years of age but this is a great game.no swearing or guns(1 of the characters use a gun but you cant see it)this is a kid friendly game and has an outstanding fan base.I highly recommend you play this game.it has unforgettable characters like ness,Paula,Jeff, poo.once I played this game I wanted to legally change my name to ness.when naming your people, choose "don't care" to choose the epic and real names for the characters.I hope this review was informative and don't forget to rate this and I hope you pay this epically funny  rpg of a game.this is pkmntrainersonic signing off and have fun fighting bad guys.bye bye.

Great Game   shelley22435
I always wanted this game when I was little but never bought it. I wish so much that I had bought it. I am 28 and it keeps my attention pretty well. If I played this when I was younger, I would have been completely consumed by it. The differences from other RPGs of the time are a breath of fresh air. It is funny without being cheesy. It has a great storyline, and you are not held strictly to one line of actions. You can accomplish some things in the order of your choosing. Great game. Will probably lose some sleep for a week or so.

The Meteor...   Lloyd515
In 199X (Oh the irony.) a meteorite (hope to god I used that right) lands on the outskirts  of onett.
You play as a young boy, as you can name character's, named Ness (hurray default names) as he travels the world looking for the eight your sanctuary locations to hear the eight melodies.
With quirky enemies, items and people, this RPG, one of the few of them set in the present, will never leave you  bored.
I recommend this to any one, even people who hate RPG's due to it being a one-of-a-kind games.
It's very addicting and will have you coming back for more!
The story, to not reveal any spoilers, is about a young boy, with a fat neighbor, who should be hated, as he realizes he has the power, as well as 3 others, to save the world.

A break from the Norm   Donmacavele
Earthbound, I remember when I first found this on SNES. Easily ranked among the greatest RPG's in an era full of greats such as Final Fantasy and Shining Force. Anyways, onto the review!
Story: A meteor falls outside of town and then your neighbors brother disappears. You find him by the meteor but a lot of the local animals are starting to act weird. On your way home you are visited by a creature from the future who warns you of impending doom, explaining that this is the cause of the animals behavior. Hence begins your adventure. The story is one that offers a LOT of humor and puns.
Graphics: Revolutionary at the time. A very colorful world and battle screens. A a time when more games were basic and bland, especially on battle screens, Earthbound screams "Look at me!" every time you turn around.
Addictiveness: This is one of those love it or hate it games. Either you'll love it and become completely engrossed in it or you'll play for a short while and move onto something else. There's not much of a gray area for idle players.
Replayability: Nothing changes or carries over, but if you fall into the love it category you'll come back and play every once in a while.
Final thoughts: if you are an RPG fan this is a MUST play. the First Person perspective tries to put you IN the battle, the rolling HP and MP system was revolutionary and this easily ranks among the best RPG's of it's time.

Earthbound Cheat Codes

Exit Mouse in the Cave of the Past

Note: This only works in the Super Famicom version of Earthbound(Mother 2).

In Mother 2, you could use the Exit Mouse in the Cave of the Past, which was never intended obviously, since the feature is missing in Earthbound.

Infinite use of Rock Candy

You can use the Rock Candy in battles an unlimited amount of times to increase your stats. You have to have it in one of the two very bottom spaces of one of your characters' inventories, and you have to use it with any condiment (preferably something like Sugar Packets or Jars of Delisauce, because they will increase one of your stats by 2 instead of one). This will allow you to get greater boosts in stats when you level up.

Secret Scene

Talk to Paula's father in Twoson, then visit the hotel. When you leave the hotel a bonus scene involving Paula's father will be shown.

$50 Easy in Twoson

Outside of the hotel room in Twoson, there will be a man sitting at a table. Constantly speak to him (his response will change each time) until he decides to hand you $50 so you can leave him alone. It takes about 20 sessions of talking for him to fork it over, but it's well worth it, plus it'll make up for the night you spent at the hotel.

Avoid Battles

If you go into a room with a large amount (or any amount) of enemies in it, you can exit the room and re-enter, and the amount of enemies changes; sometimes even taking them all out of that room. This can eliminate time-consuming fights.

Is it normal to have the game suddenly freeze after you defeat the 7th Sanctuary Boss, and you see the messages on the wall (but not yet to the part where Ness remembers something random)?
naco26withcheese 08-23-13 - 04:44 PM
