A Timeless Horror Classic   Lord Cybear
Clock Tower is a fantastic point-and-click horror game that keeps you frightened around every turn.  It's the story of an orphan named Jennifer.  She and some of her friends from the orphanage get adopted by the Barrows family.  The Barrows live in a giant, beautiful castle secluded in an almost whimsical forest.  As you can imagine, being adopted by a rich, caring family who live in a forest is probably the dream of any orphan.  This dream, however, is short lived.  Not ten minutes after arriving, things take a very dark and twisted turn.  It's up to Jennifer to face true evil and survive in a truly hellish situation.

Graphics - 9
Clock Tower is a beautiful game.  Every environment you find yourself in is incredibly detailed and very life-like.  Corridors are brought to life by flowing curtains and nerve-racking lightning strikes, candles and stained glass windows create awesome lighting, and scenes of blood and gore make sure you never feel secure.  Character animations are fluid and very realistic.  You can sense the terror in Jennifer as she scrambles to hide under a bed or uses a weapon in order to narrowly escape with her life.
Sound - 9
Most of the time a horror game is defined by its sound and atmosphere.  That being said, Clock Tower truly sets the bar high.  The game boasts a soundtrack that is perfect in any situation you encounter.  The music really makes you feel that danger can come from anywhere.  The sound effects are top notch, too.  The sound of footsteps, breaking glass, and ear piercing shrieks will keep you engaged and on the edge of your seat.
Addictiveness - 8
The game is a solid 4 to 5 hours long.  It won't take you too long to finis it the first time through.  However, there are multiple different endings to discover.  The choices you make throughout the game will determine which ending you get.  This makes sure you'll come back for more after completing the game because all the endings are very unique and worth the extra time spent to get all of them.
Story - 10
The story is really what makes Clock Tower shine.  It begins by Jennifer, the main character, and some of her friends being adopted by the Barrows family.  They proceed to the Barrows Castle.  This castle is where the Barrows family calls home, and where Jennifer and her friends see their lives taking a turn for the best.  They couldn't have been more wrong.
The game is filled with amazing plot twists, great character development, and many choices that you can make along the way.  You find yourself becoming attached to Jennifer.  Her fear translates directly to the player, too.  You really feel what it's like to be helpless in an unknown place.  You try your best to survive not only to finish the game, but to see the outcome Jennifer faces at the end.
Depth - 9
The game has many nerve racking moments, head scratching puzzles, and tons of exploration that will keep you pressing forward even when you're afraid to.  You fight.  You hide.  You run.  You try your hardest to find some way out the many sticky situations you'll find yourself in while playing.
Difficulty - 7
The game gives you multiple options out of the bad situations you'll find yourself in.  While you'll no doubt yours be scared through a lot of the game, with a little patience and brain power you'll be okay.  The game isn't too hard to finish.  The real difficulty comes from discovering all the different endings.
Overall - 9
In the end, Clock Tower is an awesome game that horror fans will thoroughly enjoy.

One of the best games of it's time   Eirinn
Tick...Tick...Tick... Funny how everday sounds can suddenly become so unnerving, given the right, or perhaps, the wrong circumstances. A good scary story always plays on these elements, turning simple things, from dolls, to cradles, to footsteps, and yes, even the ticking and chiming of a clock. Clock tower is no exception, it plays on the little things. Anyone can make Zombies and ghosts scary, but it takes a special touch and certain ambience to make the everyday object seem frightening. But Human manages to pull it off with each entry in the Clock Tower series.
The story opens with four orphans, Jennifer, Ann, Laura, and Lotte, being taken to a mansion to meet the man who is adopting them: Simon Barrows. Upon arriving, Ms. Mary (the woman who brought the girls to the mansion) leaves the girls in the main parlor to wait while she goes to get Mr. Barrows. After waiting a few minutes, the girls get antsy, and so Jennifer walks into the hall to find Ms. Mary. What happens next, I will leave for the player to find out. Suffice it to say, the nightmare that becomes Jennifer Simpson's life for the next few years, begins.
Enter game.
Alone in a mansion, being hunted like an animal by a man with three foot long shears, bent on impaling you, you must try to find a way out alive. Every door knob you try, is locked. With panic growing thick, will you survive? The controls are simple and very easy to learn. You just point and click. Click in front of, or behind, Jennifer to make her walk in that direction. Double click, and she will run. Pressing x makes her stop walking or running. Pressing and holding the a button will bring up your inventory. And you may also press L or R to make Jennifer run left or right (respectively). Be careful though, as running causes Jennifer's stamina to drop. Stamina that she'll need if she's going to survive an encounter with Scissorman. If her stamina is high enough, you can struggle with Scissorman by tapping the panic button rapidly. If you succeed, she'll stun him long enough to get away. If her stamina is too low when she encounters scissorman, she'll lose the struggle, and it's bye bye Jennifer. The wise thing to do when there's another exit is to run, but if Jennifer's stamina is too low, she runs a risk of stumbling and falling, leaving her vulnerable to her attacker. There are four levels of stamina, which are indicated by the background color behind Jennifer's picture.
Blue = Well rested
Yellow = Beginning to tire
Orange = Fatigued
Red = Exhausted
You can recover stamina by holding the x button to make Jennifer sit down and rest for a bit when able. Along the way, you will witness some truly horrifying things, from crazed men, and decapitated creatures, to rotting corpses, and even your friends beind murdered while they beg you to help them. Some of the images in the game, you may actually find disturbing. It's all part of the fright you must endure if you are to escape the clock tower mansion alive, and stay that way. The paths you choose will determine the outcome, and which of your friends, if any, will live. To get out alive, you must look for every clue you can find, to unravel the mystery of the clock tower and it's inhabitants. It won't be an easy task, but it will be an interesting one, and one you won't soon forget.
Graphics: 10/10
Incredible.
At first look, you'll see smooth sprites and backgrounds. The environment is very believable, and the shadows are very well used to create a creepy ambience, that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The close up view of Jennifer (the "picture" referred to earlier) is very detailed, clean, and animated. From her mouth moving while she talks (though no voice over is present, just text), to her hair swaying and facial expressions when shocked or afraid, the animation is very fluid. Impressive indeed, for an SNES game. The colors are nice, though as you might expect, many of the rooms are designed simillarly, resulting in less variety of colors, but this is hardly a fault when one considers the design of the level. Many of the images appear to be actual phtographs, put into the game, and they are done very well, resulting in sharp graphics in every scene, in-game, and cut-scene alike. One of the things that really impressed me though, was Jennifer's movements. Not only were here movements fluid when walking and running, they were also very realistic. Just try making her run one direction, then turn and run the opposite direction without stopping, and see how her hair flows out in individual strands, rather than just one solid piece as many games would do. Also the way she shifts her feet when you do this, and slides a step, throws her arm out for balance, and turns in a single fluid movement. And the final detail that caught my eye, was the way her skirt sways side to side realisticly, with each step. No complaints here on graphics. Real, smooth, detailed, fluid, what more could you ask for from an SNES game?
Sound: 10/10
Incredible.
This aspect was just as well thought out as the graphics were, if not more. There is no background music, but this isn't a bad thing. It actually creates far more suspense. The deathly silence as Jennifer walks down the dark, empty hallway, watching every step of the way, expecting to see scissorman pop out at any given moment. This eerie silence is only broken by the sound of Jennifer's heels, clip-clopping on the hard floor, and the squeals of the door hinges. This combines with the shady graphics to create a very creepy atmosphere. The occasional scream of a misfortunate friend of yours, piercing through the still night. The sound seriously delivers. There are two tunes to be heard: one is the "creepy" tune, that plays sometimes when Scissorman is near, and sometimes when you enter certain rooms. The other, being when you are being chased. These two tunes are perfect as well, with the former setting your nerves on edge, and the latter emphasizing fear and panic. Once the panic music starts, you are not out of danger until it stops. The sound of Jennifer's heels on the stairs and ladders is also a nice touch. With all of this, and several other small sounds that you will hear, that are meant to startle you (and often do), I could only find one complaint, and that being that Scissorman's shears give a deeper sound than I'd have expected. More of a chopping sound than a sharp sound. Still, depending on various factors, this could be accurate. No negative points there, and even if there were, all of the other successes in sound would make up for it.
Depth: 10/10
Incredible.
With eight listed endings, one hidden ending, and two alternate forms of the eight listed endings (so nine to eleven endings) plus several shocker deaths that could count as an ending of their own, this game has plenty to offer by way of storyline depth. As for gameplay depth, it more than delivers, with several puzzles to solve along the way, a few well hidden items that you will need in order to obtain the best ending possible, and numerous paths you can take, that branch out into more paths. There is definitely a great deal of depth to be had here.
Story: 10/10
Incredible.
This is one of the best displays of writing skills I have ever found in a game. The story is so engrossing. While it may start out shallow, it quickly develops into a deep story, with shocking twists and turns that you definitely won't see coming. That is, if you can survive long enough to get to the plot twists. This one is packed with surprise after surprise all the way to the end.
Addictiveness: 9/10
Excellent.
With so many endings, it'll keep you playing over and over, on your way to the best ending. With the convenient continue feature, if you get killed, you can pick back up moments before the fatal mistake that costed Jennifer her life. While I'll doubt you'll replay it to uncover every single ending unless you're a hardcore fan, I myself replayed it until I got to the "B" and "C" endings, got frustrated, and put it down for a bit, and I've yet to pick it back up. The cause for my frustration being that I only failed to get the "S" ending (which is even better than the "A" ending) because I had failed to do one thing that had nothing to do with the ending of the game. And worse, this mistake was made at the beginning of the game, which meant I had to start over from the very beginning of the game, if I wanted to get anything better than the "B" ending. With so many twists, you never know how one little seemingly irrelevant action will create a ripple effect and alter the outcome of the entire game. For example (you might not want to read this if you're opposed to a tip) there is a key you'll want to grab in a box that's in the first room in the second stretch of hallway. However, sometimes this box is empty, and sometimes it isn't. What causes it to change? I've yet to figure that out. I can appreciate things like this, but they can also sometimes be annoying to some players. This is the only seemingly random event I've found, however, and I do think there is a trigger event that changes it. Little things like these combine to make the experience more varried, but the one I experienced may actually hurt the addictiveness level. Finally, the need to play the entire game again, may easily cause you to opt to put the game down for awhile before trying again, as most of the frightening events are set events, and will be the same each time through, so it may feel redundant and will certainly lose most of it's fright factor. It is for this reason only that I give addictiveness a nine.
Difficulty: 5/10
Average.
This game has many puzzles of sorts, and is huge. You must traverse the mansion sveral times to find everything you'll need, and realistically Jennifer will not see the use of some items or come up with the ideas for some actions until she sees the problem. For example, you may see an item you want to investigate, but cannot reach. Jennifer however will not follow your prodding to push an object to stand on, until you make her see the item. Also she will not see certain items until she finds clues about them (you won't see them either). Bearing these things in mind will greatly aid you in your quest to find the truth and find an escape from the mansion. You will have to go from room to room, as you find bits of clues that often make no sense to you, but will in time. These things add to the difficulty. Also there are certain unexpected events in which you will have only a split second to save yourself. Always keeping an eye on Jennifer's picture will be a big help, as there are times you will need to panic (press b rapidly), and you won't know. You'll have to stay on guard constantly, always ready to panic in case of an unexpected attack. These types of surprises are what bumps this game from a four to a five in difficulty.
Overall: 9.8/10
Excellent.
First things first: My personal rating is a perfect ten, but quite honestly, I tried to find a reason to rate it less than a ten. Had I not been so determined to do so, it likely would have gotten one. This game is nothing short of a masterpiece of the horror/survival genre. A game this good only comes around once in a great while, and it's just the beginning of a great series.
In conclusion, clock tower: The first fear, is a great game that I recommend to anyone that enjoys a good horror game. With a large variety of endings, variations on the in game storyline, and a gripping overall story, this game offers an incredible amount of depth, especially for an SNES game. It may be a point and click, but don't let that deceive you, as it's alot of fun, has good controls, and manages to keep you on the edge of your seat every step of the way. With everything a fan of horror/survival games could want from a retro game, Clock tower: the first fear is a must play. Ready for a scare, and a great story? Look no farther, this game is for you.

Great SNES Horror!   Kevinmonitor
This game overall, is a very good SNES Horror Game.  The plot was interesting enough, the graphics are basically not excellent, but it is acceptable and nice. Multiple endings and lots of rooms to explore make this game has a lot of depth, and really worth a play again. The game was big. So exploring wasn't so easy. The sounds were cool - I like when the theme changes, depending on which condition  you are in. I will play this game again, just to explore even more of the depths and endings.
I give this a 8.5. The best SNES Horror Game ever! (My favorite was when being chased by Scissorman.)

Clock Tower Review   mgharper94
What I like about the game is its surprises and secrets plus the fact that there are multiple endings to it. The graphics are good especially the facial features in the box on the lower left corner. The sound was pretty good, you might have a hard time getting the credits song out of your head. I would say that this game has a high replay value due to certain things you do in the game and depending on where you go.  Depending on what you do in the game triggers a different story, sometimes you will have one sometimes you won't. The game is really big at that,it offers tons of things such as different endings and items that you will have to figure out and get. Finally the difficulty is kind of hard depending on what situation you're in. In closing I hope you enjoyed this review and I hope that you enjoy the game Clock Tower.

Clock tower: Awesome and Early Horror Game   beastbros12321
This game is very fun for one of the first survival horror games. Lets start with the graphics. The graphics are pretty good for a SNES game. The way Jennifer moves is also very amazing for an old game. The sound is awesome...well. It is good! The only sound (besides the panic music) is the sound of Jennifer's footsteps which makes the game even more terrifying! The addictiveness of this game is incredible! There are 9 endings (which is also why the depth is a definite 10) and it is incredibly fun to run and try to survive the spine tingling moment of being chased by Bobby Barrows (scissorman, more in Story). The story is very good. You and your friends, Ann, Laura, and Lotte, arrive to the Clock Tower by Mary Barrows. When you get there, Ms.Mary goes to find Simon Barrows and she does not come back for a while,so, you go look for her. You go 2 steps and here a scream from the main hall! When you go back, the lights are out and the girls are missing. You go looking for them and the rest of the story falls in to place. The depth is very good as there is 9 different endings! The difficulty is sort of hard for a new player and trying to get all of the endings could be very hard work.
Overall, this game is magnificent and if you have an SNES, it is definitely worth your time.

Slow, not scary, not fun.   thudricdholee
I have never heard of this game, but I'm usually a sucker for survival horror type games. So I ran across it here and the reviews were good, so I thought I'd give it a try. It was released in '95 in Japan and never ported to the US. And god help us all, they re-released it on the virtual Wii console in '10, allowing another generation of kids to be bored stiff by this terrible game.
The first thing that made me not happy was that it was a point and click game. Those are usually not very interesting, but hey. I thought, the reviews were good, so it must be worth it. Then came the opening scenes, which were badly done picture stills. Okay...let's push on...then the game itself.  And that's where the last of the fun died.
This game is slow. Dead slow, and that's no pun. You walk...so...slowly... everywhere....it's...annoying. And yes, you can run...but when you click on an object to interact with it, there's usually this slow walk/movement that she needs to do to align herself correctly with it.  I found myself talking to the screen. "Jennifer, why...so...slow...." I got bored in the first five minutes, seriously.
And also, as a warning, i didn't play past the bedroom with the mirror because it made me extremely angry and left me staring at the screen, controller dangling from my fingers, mouthing W...T....F at the screen. Not in a good 'surprised' way either. In a (spoiler alert, if you care don't read the following capitalized text:)
I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU MADE ME DO ALL OF THAT STUPID... I WASTED TEN MINUTES OF MY LIFE AND I GOT KILLED BY A HAND STICKING OUT A MIRROR SERIOUSLY? NO WARNING, NO MYSTERIOUS MESSAGE, NOTHING JUST A MIRROR AND A HAND?
Spoiler done. Rage remains, however. Keep that in mind as you read the following review.
Graphics: 3
One of my fellow reviewers said the facial expressions on the little talking head boxes was great. I don't know, maybe they're playing a different port than I am. Even taking into account the system and the year it came out, these graphics are horrible. Flat, bland, 2 dimensional and uninspired. The faces look like cardboard dolls that occasionally twitch, the cut scenes feature terrible photo-realistic (hah) pictures, the colors are boring (and yeah, I know it's supposed to be a horror game. Still no excuse for that.) I'd have expected these graphics out of the original Nintendo system, not the Super Nintendo.
Sound: 3
The background music doesn't inspire any kind of sense of fear or anticipation; it fades out entirely sometimes, and when it's there, it's annoying anyway. Usually you're left without music at all, just the awkward sound of your oddly hoof-like footsteps on bare wood, the muffled creak of sadly unoiled hinges, and random background noises that are trying for startling but tend to be just disruptive instead.
Addictiveness: 4
I am only giving it this score because despite my rage-or maybe because of it-there's a very strong urge in me to go play it again. And I probably will, because I'm nothing if not a sucker for punishment. There's evidently a bunch of different endings you can get depending on what your actions are during the game. And a bunch of secrets and stuff. I don't know. I might play it again, but I'll have to be pretty bored to do so.
Story: 5
I'm giving this a 5 because it's not your typical Super Nintendo story. The story is creepy (even if the game play mechanics, slowness, and terrible graphics conspire to rob you of any atmospheric chill you might get). The deformed mass murdering scissor-man isn't perhaps the most awe-inspiring villain, but it's different and different is usually good. If I play this through again it'll be very interesting to see how they tie this all together. And how many people snuff it, of course.
Depth: 8
This score is mostly based on hear-say; as I mentioned earlier, there are evidently a bunch of different endings you can get in different combinations due to your actions throughout the game. Now, that's fairly common sauce now for games like this, but back in these days it wasn't and it must have been a pretty exciting thing. And because of the different endings, the replay value of this game (should) be pretty high. And on top of that, there's so much to explore and see (hearsay again) that it should keep you busy for quite some time.
Difficulty: 4
Point. Click. Ooh, you can look at that thing on the table (the cursor changes to a box). It's fairly simple, control-wise. Game-wise it's...uh, fairly simple except that they keep killing you for stupid reasons.
Overall: 4.5
I really didn't like this game. I was bored to tears, then driven to frustrated madness, all in less than twenty minutes. That's got to be some kind of record for me. It's still up in the air as to whether or not I'll bother to try it again. I'm really not sure what the other reviewers were seeing that I've evidently missed in this game; maybe it was a touch of nostalgic mistiness? Whatever it was, this game is going on my 'worst games' list.

Clock Tower Game Description

This is a complete English translation of Clock Tower, a survival horror point-and-click adventure game released for Super Famicom in 1995. This game also featured a Japanese exclusive release for Playstation in 1997 titled "Clock Tower: The First Fear." It is the prequel to the PlayStation game known in the US simply as Clock Tower (which is "Clock Tower 2" in Japan).

You play as Jennifer Simpson, fleeing from the insane psycho killer Bobby Barrows (a.k.a. "The Scissorman") in the Barrows Family Mansion. Jennifer and her three friends, Ann (the brunette), Laura (the blonde) and Lotte (the redhead), have recently been adopted by Simon Barrows, who lives in an elaborate mansion somewhere in Norway. After being led to the mansion by a Ms. Mary, the kids sit in the main foyer while Mary goes to fetch Mr. Barrows. When Ms. Mary is away for a number of minutes ("She's been gone an awfully long time..."), Jennifer offers to go look for her. No sooner than she enters the next hall does she hear a scream from the foyer! Rushing back, she finds the lights out and the foyer deserted. Hoping this is some elaborate joke, Jen begins to look for the girls....

Vizzed.com is very expensive to keep alive! The Ads pay for the servers.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
