Zupapa! Review by: Eirinn - 6/10

Silly game, serious fun
Zupapa is a game about...well, I would tell you, but the truth is, I have no clue what this game is about, but that isn't always important I guess. What really matters in a game, is how enjoyable it is; some games accomplish enjoyable gaming and fun by giving you a story that pulls you in, and others do so by giving you unique and/or addicting gameplay, while yet others fail miserably at both (I won't call any names, like Slaughter Sport... Oops)! Zupapa falls into the second category, or at least tries to. This review endeavors to determine if the developers managed to pull that off, or simply did what many "unique gameplay" games have done already, and show us why those "unique" ideas were never implemented in other games.

The controls are crazy easy to learn, and flow as smoothly as the developers could have hoped while the game was still in it's conception phase, and possibly even smoother. You simply "Tackle" the bad guys to get rid of them, but this isn't always as simple as you might hope, given that you're so greatly outnumbered.

However, coming to your aid are... Are you ready for this? A bunch of little star people! Or... something. You get them to help by walking up to them and touching them. Once you do this, they'll start following you, and then you simply press a button to throw them at an enemy, causing them to cling tenaciously to the foe, immobilizing them, while you tackle the helpless fiend. Fair? No, not at all! Fun? Yes sir and yes ma'am, it's a blast, and truly a game like no other, which is very much an unfortunate thing.

Yes, I'm aware that I just spoiled the suspense that I was trying to build up and save for the review, but this game is so brilliant that it merits that. Also I have no patience nor self control, so...yeah!

Alright, now on to the only thing in this world that could possibly make numbers fun: Game review ratings! Well that and a paycheck...

Graphics: 6/10
Good.

Zupapa has some bright and colorful graphics, and they aren't disappointing at all, but they are nowhere near what they could have (and should have) been for the time. 2D was fine, but they just aren't as clear and crisp as they could have been. Take Yoshi's Story on the Nintendo 64 for an example of good execution of a 2D game from this game's time. It looks to me like the developers got lazy with it, and settled for mediocrity.

All is not lost however, as the graphics have some redeeming qualities, like nice clean sprites. While they may not be the best looking sprites out there, these aren't bad at all. They aren't sloppy or bland, they're nice and solid, and full of 16 bit era style charm.

The backgrounds are all full of cheeriness and just make you want to smile. The colorful carnival levels for example, make you reminisce about your childhood when you would throw small children at carnival workers and tackle them for cotton candy. Such wonderful emotions are captured perfectly in these almost childlike graphics, and you'll find your youthful side immediately engaged.

And so we have a jumble of graphics good and bad. Take note boys and girls: this isn't how you make bad graphics, it's how you make good graphics bad.

Highlights:
-Colorful graphics engage your inner child

Sound: 5/10
Average.

Yeah, so the sound quality is a little rough around the edges, much in the same way as the graphics. It's behind the times once again, and much like my sense of fashion, it would have been cool ten years earlier.

The Background music is nicely done for the 16 bit era, but this game came out as the the 32-64 bit era was fading out and giving way to the next generation of gaming. Still, if you can get past the outdated audio, you'll find decent tunes that are befitting the game and fit well into the overall experience.

The sound effects...oh the sound effects. I really want to say something good about the audio here, but they just didn't give me anything to work with. The sound effects are decent enough, but again, outdated in quality. This is the kind of stuff you would hear on an SNES or Genesis, which isn't a bad thing...unless you're playing it ten years after those were cutting edge consoles. The systems that made those systems obsolete were becoming obsolete when this game was made, if that gives you any idea about how good the sound is for it's time. It's good enough, but it's kind of like putting grilled cheese sandwiches on a pizza buffet bar. They're good when served in the proper environment, but this isn't the proper environment.

So with extremely outdated audio for it's time, Zupapa gets a low score. The sound isn't bad, but given what they could have been in the year it was made, they show an extreme lack of effort.

Highlights:
-I quit bashing on a good game

Story: N/A

So there is no story, which means my imagination had to figure out why the star people were attacking everyone. I tried, but even my mind couldn't really dream up a story strange enough for a game like this. But here goes: Once upon a time, the evil ballerinas and bad samurai guys got together with the giant crane machine dude, and kidnapped a bunch of baby stars. Their football player/sword fighter blend star dad then set out to save them. The end.

Highlights:
-An awesome story made up by your's truly, if I have to say so myself (and I'm fairly certain I do)

Depth: 4/10
Poor.

In a day when some video games had stories longer than full length films, more lines than a novel, and more suspense than an episode of Looney Tunes (will the coyote ever catch that road runner? Will Gossamer ever get a pet named George? Will my brother ever have more hair than Elmer Fudd???), Zupapa decided to wade in the shallow end of the depth pool. In fact, I'm not even sure it's in the pool at all.

This however, is acceptable in an Arcade game. I mean, it's an Arcade game; you pop a quarter in, press a button, and play for five minutes. It isn't supposed to have a ton of levels, epic story lines, or seven modes to choose from. It's supposed to be a short game that you can enjoy while you're waiting on the dryer at the laundromat to stop, or for your dad to get out of the bathroom at the pizza place after he ate a jalapeno pizza with extra hot sauce on top. Arcade games are meant to be short and fun, and that's just what Zupapa is.

What Zupapa does offer by way of depth is a good amount of levels for an Arcade game. And while I can't remember the exact number of levels, I want to say it was somewhere around twenty-four.

Highlights:
-Stands true to the experience you'd expect from an Arcade game

Addictiveness: 9/10
Excellent.

Finally, I can say something good about the game, and Zupapa is certainly a game that deserves a good word or two. It saddens me that up to this point, I haven't been able to really speak that well of it, but in all honesty, it really is a great little game.

Zupapa is one of those titles that I found with (if I recall correctly) no screen shots or info on it, and decided by some random decision that I wanted to play it. Why I picked it instead of one of the other faceless Arcade titles, I have no idea, but I'm really glad that I did, as it quickly became one of my favorite oddball games. There are always those rare games that try something we've never seen before (Toejam & Earl, Haunting, etc.) and leave us amazed at how well they played, and wondering why we don't see more games like them, and Zupapa is certainly one of those games.

Another great thing is that it's a great time killer. In fact, I would recommend it more for use as a time killer than as a game that you play all the way through (though it's fine for that as well). It's a fun, lighthearted game that you can spend two minutes or an hour on.

So while it isn't an epic story that everyone should hear, it is a good game for a quick play, and worth trying out.

Highlights:
-Uh...it's fun

Difficulty: 4/10
Easy.

So here we have a game with little difficulty, excluding the bosses which can indeed present a bit of a challenge, but in the most entertaining ways possible. But even with challenging boss fights, the simplicity of the rest of the game balances out the difficulty pretty well.

Are you good with platformer/puzzle games like bubble bobble? If so, Zupapa should be fairly easy for you. If you're somewhat skill-impared with bobbling bubbles however, then you'll have many of the same struggles here.

Highlights:
-All of the difficulty here is presented in the most fun way possible

Overall: 6/10
Good.

This rating is so far below what Zupapa really deserves, unfortunately the graphics and sound being so far out of date really hurt the game's overall rating. Don't be fooled though, this one is quite the jewel and deserves all of the praise I've given it, and far less grief than it's caught in this review. And even then, the graphics and audio are still very much enjoyable (especially if you like older games), and don't actually detract from the fun of the game itself, so this rating really is quite deceiving. Bring on the grilled cheese!!!

My personal rating of Zupapa, based on fun alone is easily between a 7.5 and an 8.5. In short, it's a great game that deserves more of a fan base than it enjoys.

What all of this rambling boils down to is simply that Zupapa is a great game (yes, "great" is a fitting word) that I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys old school platformer/puzzle games. It could be compared to Bubble Bobble, but it's actually far more entertaining than Bubble Bobble in my opinion, and it's a very unique game.

Indeed, I suggest spending the time and Viz required to play Zupapa, and I can say with a good amount of certainty that if puzzle/platformers are your kind of game, then you won't find yourself disappointed in the least with this one. In fact, I would suggest giving this game a shot even if you've never played (or have played and don't care for) a puzzle/platformer. This is just one of those games that is so unique that every gamer should experience it at some point.

Zupapa: funny name, odd gameplay, and even weirder game overall, but serious fun.
