Neo Geo Sonic   gamerforlifefor..
On December 20, 1999, Sega decided to do something that was almost unheard of back then. They released a Sonic game for a non-Sega system, the Neo Geo Pocket Color. That game is known as Sonic the Hedgehog: Pocket Adventure. The game received lots of praise from gaming websites, including IGN, who gave the game a perfect score. Is this game really worthy of a 10, or did IGN go too far with their score? I'll tell you right now by making this review.
Graphics: 10/10 As far as visuals go, Sonic Pocket Adventure is the most visually appealing Neo Geo Pocket Color game I've ever played. The character and level designs are the two main reasons why I feel this way. Sonic and friends look absolutely fantastic, even though they decided to use the modern Sonic look instead of classic Sonic. Even so, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Dr. Eggman look way better than they did on the Game Gear. As for the level designs, they to look fantastic. If you've played Sonic 2, you'll recognize a lot of the levels in this game, though here the levels have different names, such as Casino Night Zone being called Cosmic Casino. While it would've been nice to see some new ideas for level design, the attention to detail that was put into Sonic Pocket Adventure's visuals are absolutely stunning. For these reasons, I give the graphics a 10 out of 10!
Sound: 10/10 Like the graphics, Sonic Pocket Adventure has the best soundtrack I've ever heard in a Neo Geo Pocket Color game. The soundtrack is full of amazing 8 bit remixes of Sonic 3 music, such as the boss theme. Another example is the Aquatic Relix act 1 theme, which is a remix of Mushroom Hill Zone act one. There are many other examples of Sonic 3 remixes in this game but those 2 I mentioned are almost as good as, if not better than the versions from the Genesis classic. The soundtrack is one of the most amazing parts about this game, and for that, I'm giving the sound a 10!
Addictiveness: 8/10 Sonic Pocket Adventure is easily one of the most entertaining handheld Sonic games of all time. The gameplay is just as smooth and fast paced as the Genesis Sonic games. While the levels are mostly the same as those in Sonic 2, this game is still entertaining enough for me to say that all Sonic fans need to try out. While the levels are similar to Sonic 2, the bosses offer a fresh experience for those who've already played that game. The only boss that isn't different is the Silver Sonic boss battle. Other than that, you'll find that Sonic Pocket Adventure has some interesting boss fights. Overall, Sonic Pocket Adventure is entertaining enough for me to give the addictiveness an 8.
Story: N/A Sonic Pocket Adventure doesn't have a story, therefore I'm leaving this category blank.
Depth: 8/10 As far as this game is concerned, Sonic Pocket Adventure provides 6 different zones with 2 acts in each zone for you to complete, which is a good amount for a portable Sonic game. Also this game has collectable items known as photo pieces. In each level, there are photo pieces hidden in different areas, which are used to complete puzzles found in the puzzle room. The puzzle room is a unique feature I haven't seen in any other Sonic game. Overall, I feel like Sonic Pocket Adventure has a good amount of content, so I'm giving the depth an 8.
Difficulty: 3/10 This is the one category where Sonic Pocket Adventure truly falters. Even though a lot of the levels are based on levels from Sonic 2, this game is very easy compared to the Genesis classic. I found myself making it through many of the levels here without dying. I had a much tougher time making it through Sonic 2 than I did making it through this game. The only area that I had a ton of trouble making it through was the Aquatic Relix Zone, mainly because the bubbles don't appear as quickly as they do in other Sonic games. Other than the bubbles not appearing very often, I can't think of anything else that's super challenging in Sonic Pocket Adventure. Overall, I say the difficulty deserves a 3.
Overall Score: 9.2/10 While I don't think that the 10 IGN gave this game is justified, Sonic Pocket Adventure is still one of the best handheld Sonic games I've ever played. With beautiful graphics, an incredible soundtrack, and very addicting gameplay, Sonic Pocket Adventure is a must play game for any Sonic fan. If it hadn't been for the lack of difficulty, I would've been willing to give this game a higher score, but Sonic Pocket Adventure is still good enough for me to give the game a 9.2 out of 10.

Is that a Sonic in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?   len1444
I. Overview
???Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure is a platforming game released in 1999, and its exclusively for the Neo Geo Pocket Color handheld. I would arguably say it's the best game on the system, it's clear that the game designers really cared about the game and tried to emulate the success of the sonic games of old. The result? An incredibly polished game that despite the first impression delivers on all levels. I found this little gem during my marathon where I vowed to play every single sonic game ever released, just for the heck of it.
II. The specifics...
???Graphics: I was actually surprised to learn upon first inspection that the game is actually 16-bit, and although it seems like an 8-bit game at first impression, I quite liked the way the cel-shaded-esque graphics looked, and it fit the theme of the game as well. Sonic is just as smooth as ever, and there is no detraction from anything quality based. That being said, this game looks amazing, it's incredibly impressive how the designers managed to make a game so reminiscent of the old sonic games on the genesis through a different art-style. The pseudo-3d levels differ from this look and feel but still pretty damn good for a handheld game. All in all, definitely not complaining about the graphics. 10/10
???Sound: Every piece of music has it's own theme and feel, and complements the stages really well. A lot of the music is from the sonic games on the genesis; specifically "Sonic 2" (my favorite sonic OST) and "Sonic 3 and Knuckles" but with their own little spin on them. Being a sonic fan, the thing that got me hooked aside from the game was the music. It was enough to make me bob my head and even hum along to the music while I play which added to the experience. The sound files have that "handheld feel" but without sounding choppy or distorted, and overall it's a joy to listen to. I got multiple nostalgia goose bumps while listening to this music and any fan of the series will surely enjoy it as much as I did. Overall, the sound is another selling point of this game and I can't really find any negatives. 10/10
???Addictiveness: Being a sonic fan, I can't say I ever get enough of running at past mach 5 speeds collecting coins, jumping on enemies and showing that eggnog Robotnik what's what. In essence, the game is designed to be addictive as it brings out the perfectionist achievement hunter in everyone. You don't stop with the first play through either. You start to want to collect those chaos emeralds (something special happens when you get all 7), unlock bonus stages, get those pictures clips to unlock the bigger pictures, and try your luck in the time trials. This game is nothing short of addictive; the very definition. The only drawback is that the game itself was quite short, but I'll get to that later. 9/10
???Story: To be honest, the story isn't the selling point of this game, or any 2d sonic platformer. It's the common story of good versus. evil with the odd princess here and there. You don't play a sonic game for the story, you play it for the slick platforming and upbeat music. The story is nothing special, but it's not bad either. 6/10
???Depth: Sadly, the game is a bit short, and it's the only thing keeping this game from a perfect 10, but it will keep you busy for a couple hours or more if you decide to unlock the bonus content. It's not the longest sonic game in existence, but it's honestly not that bad either. However, each individual stage is packed to the brim with coins to collect, power-ups to gain, and secrets to find, with each path giving you a slightly different game experience. There's plenty of content, but don't expect this to be your sole game to play when the power goes off for a week. 8/10
???Difficulty: You have a couple options when it comes to this: A normal mode, an easy mode, and a time limit switch. I personally felt like it was a bit on the easy side, aside from collecting the picture clips, those honestly made me want to throw my controller against the wall at times. The game controls well, easy to pick up and play. Also, sonic doesn't feel like a dead fish, he slips and slides around as a speedy hedgehog would really giving a sense of speed to the game. Based on this it's hard to rate the difficulty of this game because it's whatever you want it to be, so I'll give it a 6/10.
III. The Verdict
???This honestly should have been the standard of most handheld games, and it's sad that many others weren't as polished with as much attention to detail as this game was;a true technical marvel. Overall score: 8.3/10 (This score is based off the above. If story and difficulty wasn't a deciding factor, the game would easily be a 9/10)
IV. Final Notes
???Please be gentle as this is my first review. I normally don't review games but when I played this I was just stunned at how well this game was made and felt like I had to tell others. So, there's my 2 cents, for what it's worth. Enjoy.

It's like Sonic for the Genisis, But portable!   lugiaboy
Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure  is a excellent game for Sonic fans new and old and has a classic 8 bit feel to the game. I would like to review this game for how well done it was made.
Graphics: 10: The graphics are nice, clean, and have a sense of a 8 bit classic game such as the Sega Master System or Game Gear titles. They are marvelously well made and for a 8 bit console.
Sound: 9: The music might sound good, but they are in fact from other games. I don't mind this as much. The music make the game sound great with a great soundtrack to go along with it.
Addictiveness: 10: I found myself playing this game a lot when I was a kid. It's easy to learn and you can go pick it up and play with it anytime around and anywhere you want.
Story: 9: There is not a whole lot about the story, but it is simple. Dr. Robotnik(Eggman) is yet trying to take over the world and it is up to Sonic to find all the Chaos Emeralds to stop him once again.
Depth: 10: There is a lot of things that this game will offer. It has these puzzle pieces you can collect throughout the whole game and collect them to get a puzzle in the Room Select. You will also get a Time Trial to test how fast you can beat the level and get ranked. You got a duel room which you can play with other players of the game. Finally, you got a options room where you can change difficulty which I only have seen in a few Sonic games, an option where you can change if your timer runs out, an option where you change how many lives you got, and a power out option which I think is for Super Sonic, but I have never actually tried it.
Difficulty: 5: I rated this a 5 because if it is too hard, you can simply change how hard it is. There is an option for how hard the game is. All you do is go to options and change your difficulty.
Overall Rating: 9.8: This game is fun and easy. I loved to play this when I was younger and I still do now. It has so much stuff for you to do and explore and you can change the way you play it. It makes me think about the classic Sonic games for years now and it still does. It is one of my favorite Sonic games of today. Thanks for looking at my review for Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure.

Sonic Pocket Adventure for the Neo Geo Pocket Color! Y   G@mehe@d
If you have seen my threads and posts you can easily tell that Sonic is my favorite game franchise. If you thought that then you are correct, and because I am a big Sonic fan I review plenty of Sonic games. I beat every classic Sonic game and I was looking for something new. I thought for a solid 5 minutes and then I thought. Sonic Pocket Adventure, a game I've been wanting to play for so long and then I started playing and it was way better then I expected. even though SEGA and SNK reused levels from previous titles. It's still a great game! Lets take a look shall we.
GRAPHICS: Even though the levels were reused from the previous titles, the levels are detailed and good looking, and the level design is creative and there plenty of those loops and secret passage ways. Some people may think that this game is 8- bit but it is actually 16-bit. Surprised?
SOUND: The sound is reused from previous titles too. However the music is upbeat and great sounding. I finally got those old Sonic songs out of my head (it took 2 years) and here they are in my head again.
ADDICTIVENESS: This game is very addicting. You might be on for hours trying to find secrets and collecting chaos emeralds. It is probably the most addicting Sonic game I ever played. For video game experts, the game might not so addicting due to it's lack of difficulty.
STORY: The story is the same from the previous Sonic games. Dr. Robotnik invades South Island, captures innocent animals and steals the chaos emeralds. Only Sonic can stop this demented scientist.
DEPTH: Sonic Pocket Adventure might lack levels. However there's plenty of extras, time trial mode, dual room for two players to race each other or something like that, and the puzzle room. You collect puzzle pieces from all over the levels which look like spinning diamonds. I'll tell how many levels there are 15 levels, but they are not that huge. That's okay though there still those fun half pipe special stages.
DIFFICULTY: This game is perfect for beginners because it is so easy. So it might not attract people that are experts at games. That doesn't mean those kinds of people won't enjoy the game I'm just saying that beginners might enjoy the game a little more.

The adventure is now with you!   FiftyAmoeba712
Yes,yes sonic is a game on your Genesis, but when you were a little kid  they had the Sega Game Gear, the Sega Nomad, then the Game Boy Color, but now when those handhelds came out, they were too expensive. But you only had a Neo Geo Pocket Color, and then in 1999,a new commercial was on television saying the the new Sonic game has released,Sonic The Hedgehog:Pocket Adventure!Out now a only on Neo Geo Pocket Color, you jumped on your Mom and Dad to see if you can buy the game, then they had to agree about it and went on your Gateway Computer and see the screenshots, reviews, and Gameplays. You realize its 1:00 pm and all of your friends got a Neo Geo Pocket Color and Sonic with the handheld.Your parents agree to get it and you went to the store and saw the price...24.99!You got and you played it until the end of the time. This part of the review is how i enjoyed it.The game was supposed to Sonic Portable because it was the most fastest game for the Neo Geo Pocket Color and it was also supposed to be named Sonic 2 Portable because it was inspired by Sonic The Hedgehog 2,the music was the same, the zones were the same, and all the bosses from Sonic 2 were on Sonic Pocket Adventure. The levels were amazing but it was only 2 levels per zone. The levels are Extremely Easy in green hill zone. The game only had 8 levels.Remember,2 levels per zone!

very similar to sonic the hedgehog 2 for the sega genesis   SuperCrash64
Graphics- 9
the graphics for the game are pretty darn decent for a handled you can totally recognize everyone as for the design of the stages mainly resemble sonic 2 . I can already tell you that after spending some time on the stages .So the graphics are pretty good but pretty darn
pixelated
Sound -6 you have most of your classic sound effects but the music  is pretty much beep and bloops no enjoyable music in this game
Addictiveness -10
I have to actually appericate all that this game has done  regardless it plays like sonic 2 which is a good thing only thing that it lacks is tails but thats okay i dont actually care for talls that much
Story- 5
Same as sonic 2 you have to stop eggman or robotink through a vairety of stages  only difference is you have to collect all chaos emeralds in order to beat it
Depth offers what sonic 2 originally did expect a duel room i guess its were you and friend go off trying to beat each other in completing  stages
Difficulty -5 The Entire game is almost as hard as sonic 2 which what it mainly resembles
Overall  i give the game a 9.5  thumbs up to Sega for bringing back one of our classics on the go although its not sonic 2 its similar enough to say it is sonic 2  its not too cheap honestly its worth buying trough vizzed good job sega

Sonic Pocket Game Review   cepscrub
This game is similar to Sonic 2 in the way that their zones are similar. The graphics are great and I hope that the game can appear on the IPhone, Android, and other mobile devices in the future. The sounds are like the classic Sonic games, which I really like because it is a throwback to the classic Sonic games. It is very addictive because the sounds and graphics are a throwback to people's childhoods, which I like to see in classic games. It's not difficult, which I enjoy because anyone can play this game and it can be liked by everyone. The game goes in depth with the level amounts, but I would like to see more original levels than just changing the names of the levels from Sonic 2. Even though the story line is just like the other sonic games, it is a classic game and it is one that many people would enjoy. Overall, this game is very fun for all ages because it is a classic throwback to the classic Sonic games from many people's childhood days, the sounds and graphics are great for a pocket edition of a franchise, and it is an enjoyable experience for all who like Sonic the Hedgehog.
