It all starts with this!   Itachi9695
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Sonic 2 Month! This month I'll be reviewing all of the console main series Sonic games that I can, ending with Sonic 2. Why? Because this month focuses on the 20th anniversary of Sonic 2. So let's begin, shall we? It had been 6 years since Nintendo started dominating the market, due mostly to Mario, and Sega desperately needed a mascot of its own to sell it new console, the Genesis. They hosted an in-company competition to see who could design this new mascot. Eventually, Naoto Oshima's "Mr. Needlemouse", who would later be known as the Sonic we know and love. The game was finally released in 1991 and was bundled with the Genesis, increasing sales dramatically. Let's take a look at why this game became the legend it is today.
Graphics
The graphics for this game are really spectacular for their time. Everything from the levels to sprites to the backgrounds are very well done. Sonic himself looks pretty good and so do the enemies. Green Hill Zone is very bright and colorful and it shows just what the Genesis can pump out. Every boss uses the Eggmobile sprite as the base, but the different weapons each of them use look like they're part of the same sprite. It doesn't look like they simply attached the weapon to the sprite and it's just a nice little touch. All of the backgrounds go perfectly with their environment. A great looking game, but is it a good game?
Sound
I love this game's soundtrack, then again I guess I could say that for just about every Sonic soundtrack. These tunes have become classics. The opening "SEGA!" (which by the way, took up an eighth of the cartridge's memory) has become embedded in my brain. Green Hill Zone has been burned into every Sonic fan's ears for eternity. Marble, Spring Yard, Labyrinth, Star Light, and Scrap Brain are still very good songs to listen to. The boss music is one of my favorite boss themes ever. All in all, the music for the game is spectacular and I honestly can't think of a single track I dislike. Well, the Special Stage music almost makes me want to go to sleep, but it's not a bad track.
Addictiveness
It doesn't matter how many times I play the game, I always find new routes to take and hidden secrets I didn't even know were there. This game will have you coming back time and time again. This game's been out for 21 years and it's still this amazing. It's just one of those games where right when you think you know every twist and turn, something new appears and makes you go "Wow, I never knew this shortcut was here!" or "Woo! Fastest time yet!" It's things like this that keep you coming back years after you first beat it.
Story
There really isn't much to say because the story isn't really explained through cutscenes or anything, so what I'm about to put is a summary of the plot from the game's manual (Yes, there ARE stories to the classic Sonic games, all you have to do is look up the manual). The evil mad scientist, Dr. Robotnik (or Eggman in Japan. We finally got the "Eggman" name in Sonic Adventure, but that's for another review) has kidnapped the innocent animals of Sonic's world and turned them into robots. As Sonic, you must free these animals from their metallic prison and stop Dr. Robotnik once and for all. Not really the greatest story in the world, but it does the job and at least gives you a motive.
Depth
There are total of 6 Zones in the game, each with 3 Acts. They are as follows: Green Hill, Marble, Spring Yard, Labyrinth, Star Light, and Scrap Brain Zones. There is also the Final Zone, which is basically just the final boss, and the Special Stage. Out of all these stages, Labyrinth Zone is by far my least favorite. Why you may ask? Because it's a water level. While water levels would become a little more fun in the future, this one is 80-90% underwater, and you can't breathe, so you're constantly on the lookout for air bubbles. Each Act shouldn't take you more than about 5-6 minutes max and that's mostly for the slower-paced Zones. As for the Special Stages, your objective is to collect the Chaos Emeralds hidden in each of the stages. You can access these Special Stages by collect 50 rings and jumping into a giant ring at the end of Acts 1 and 2 of every Zone, with the exception of Scrap Brain (don't really know why except maybe because there's a cutscene at the end of Act 2) and the Final Zone (I know, duh, right?). These Special Stages are rotating mazes and you have to find your way to the Emerald. There are 6 of these total. So, while this game isn't very big in terms of the number of Zones, there is a lot to each Zone, so it is a decently big game.
Difficulty
On your first few goes, you may find the game slightly irritating at times, but after a while, it becomes pretty easy to beat. Some Zones are a little more difficult than others and the same applies to Special Stages (the 3rd one being the hardest one in my opinion). The Final Zone is really only slightly difficult because of two reasons; 1) you have no rings and 2) you can be crushed at almost any time. Trust me, this game gets easier the more you play it.
Gameplay and Controls
The controls for this game are rather simple, use the D-pad to move left and right, look up by pressing up and down by pressing down. You can also roll by pressing down while you're running. The roll is a very helpful technique for gaining speed (the spin dash wasn't introduced until the second game). You jump by pressing any button, it really doesn't matter if you push A, B, or C they all have the same function. You can destroy enemies by doing one of two things, jump into or on top of them (or on a certain weak spot for some), or you can simply roll into enemies that are on the ground. One major aspect about the gameplay is rings. Rings are basically coins, which means collecting 100 gives you an extra life. These rings also keep you alive. If you take a hit with no rings, you die, but if you have at least one ring, you can take an extra hit. This costs you all of your rings, but they do spill onto the ground so that you can pick them back up. There are also several types of monitors spread throughout each level. These contain different items depending on their picture. There is the ring box which gives you 10 rings, a shield which gives you an extra hit that doesn't cost you your rings, the power sneakers which let you run faster for a short amount of time, invincibility which makes you invulnerable to attack and lets you kill any enemy you touch for a limited time, and extra lives, but those are pretty self-explanatory. The game plays very smoothly and makes you feel like you're in control the entire time and overall is just great.
Overall I think this game has aged very well over its 21 year life-span and is still a joy to play today. If you're curious to see how the Sonic phenomenon started, give this game a try, you'll probably enjoy it. I give this game a 9 out of 10. Time to boot up my Genesis! See you next time for Sonic CD. By the way, let's see who can get the reference the title makes.

the beginning of greatness   winjorlose
Hey guys this is codythekid1993 here with Nostalgia 2.0 and 2guysandtheirgames. Today I will be reviewing the sonic game that started it all. The original SONIC THE HEDGEHOG not the 8 bit port, not the game-gear version, and not the 06 version, but the real thing SONIC THE HEDGEHOG for the Sega Genesis. And I want to waste as little time as possible, so without further ado let’s begin shall we....
The year was 1991 and Sega had finally figured out what they needed when it came to gaming and  what they were missing in general, and what they were missing happened to be a competitor and a mascot to rival the Nintendo franchises Mario Bros., which was
the pinnacle of the gaming world. Plus at that time with its strand of Super Mario Bros. Games there was really no other console to stand against it. So Sega was sent to work and the characters were sent in by the millions (with a little room for exaggeration), but none were good enough until the choices were slimmed down to two characters. The first was Mighty the Armadillo, but there was also the blue hedgehog known as Sonic who seemed to be a mystery at that time while mighty had appeared in a few games already.  It was a hard choice but in the end Sonic shook the creators of Sega making him the best choice. Other than that he also shook the hearts of many gamers around the world with his style, the speed the game showcased, and the weird but yet funny Japanese commercials you were
convinced to by this game. So you or your parents bought the game for you and the legacy and story began.
The games story begins by dropping the now famous Sega logo which took up 8 bits of the game just for sonic to run in passes it which at that time was a big deal because of cartridge size but then that was followed by a more impressive image of sonic running into the start menu, and in my opinion this was the best start screen ever. But that was just the beginning, Next you were sent to the green hill zone to start the game of running and unless you read the manual you were completely lost, but if you did you would find out that a man known as Doctor Robotnik also Known as Eggman has taken the (chaos emeralds) later found out to be a copy of dragon balls from the dragon ball T.V. show the main creator of sonic worshiped. Then you figure out eggman has used innocent little woodland creatures to power his robots which you have to defeat in order to reach him and free the animals in of each 3rd stage for 6 different 3 stage zones. But
there is a little bit of a depth problem in the story along with the story itself. Like I said before it had no story unless you had the manual which I  did not, or had an online source to look it up again which I did not. Also there was the fact that 95 percent of people never read the manual anyway. Besides that however the game really didn't have that much of a story at all  anyway which is one of the biggest problems I have with the game I get there’s a lot to do for the first game of the series but if you are going to have a story you have to do it the right way. These are the reasons I get mad with games today, and that’s why I gave the story and depth both 8's. Not because it wasn’t a good and very interesting story and concept but there was a lot to be desired in this part of the game that made me wonder what it could have been
but let’s move on.
The next topic to talk about is game play there was many things to be done, like I said before trying to beat each individual stage and every special stage after it. Also there was a lot more to do from the speed running to see how fast you can complete then game with the super blue hedgehog, to collecting rings and getting the chaos emeralds. Collecting the emeralds may be the basis of the game, but there is still a lot you can do. For example you can try to collect all the rings or get all of the animals free to get a new personal best score, but there is a lot more that things that you can spend endless hours on to. I mean this is a platformer so you have may different ways to go and parts to explore from hidden rooms to secret passages. Then there’s the two biggest reasons I liked this gameplay better than Mario. The first is the fact that there are no princesses to rescue which is good, but the biggest thing to me is it is superfast and based on speed. I mean this game has everything you would want in a platformer and that's why I give game-play a 9 even though that's not a subject to review on here, but there's a lot more we can talk about like the graphics.
The graphics of this game were great. I mean you can say the graphics were a little glitchy sure, but for a game of this time to look so smooth it was truly incredible from the well thought out level by level design to the acid trip mazes that we all know and love as the sonic special stages. There are really only minimal flaws compared to later games "Sonic 06" and other titles like "Super Mario Bros." or any other generic game from now or then that you can think of.  For example the games graphics may go in and out or change colors sometimes because the games speed is pushed, or the boss fight might be a little glitched but all in all the graphics. Also I am an avid video game player and this game was one of my favorite games to look at compared to all the other titles so I may be slightly biased, but I love the way you run fast as a super speedy hedgehog to the way you bounce of bumpers to collect chaos emeralds in the special stages it was all just a cool part of the nostalgia I get when I play this game and that's why I give the graphics a  9, because there isn't really but one or two flaws in the game graphics at all.
Now we can dig deeper into my personal experiences with the game because we all know that's what addictiveness is, but first I’d like to clarify I started playing this when my parents gave me it as a gift when I was 2 so yeah I was addicted early, but with good reason. The reason this game is so addictive to me is the fact that no matter how many times i play it something different always happens that
keeps me wanting more. Plus the fact that every time I play a game I like I want to beat it again instantly so yeah. Also I have a great deal of respect for the makers of the game, because they had the guts to stand toe to toe with the other big franchises at the time like Nintendo, Famicom, and all the other companies. So I guess that was also what made me keep on trucking with this game and with Sega in general. Besides that I was always a great gamer who was drawn in by the lights, speed, and flashiness of any new game that could keep my attention and this game did just that. I spent hundreds of hours in my childhood playing this and I still spend many days a week playing this for 2 to 3 hours a day so for me it never gets old, and that's why I gave this games addictiveness a 10 because I just can’t seem to put this game down it was a peace of my childhood that will live on forever in the hearts and minds of millions and I'll love every second of it like I do right now, even when sonic team and Sega make a bad game no one wants to play and releases it any way I’ll play it, because II am a true sonic fan and a true gamer who can handle bad games every now and again that's why i play this game because I am a true sonic fan unlike some people, but enough ranting let’s just say i give this games
addictiveness a 10 and move on...
The difficulty is the next topic I'm going to cover and I'm going to start by saying this… it’s a sonic game!!!It’s really not that hard I mean there are a lot of challenging challenges but they are always easy enough to beat while remaining to keep its toughness up just enough to make the game interesting and yet not to hard so that it makes me want to punch the screen which is a nice thing to say compared to some. however there are some special stages like special stage three and five that are a little too easy to fail which makes it frustrating but that's me just nitpicking so let’s just forget that and move on. For this games difficulty I’m giving it a 6  because I like its  difficulty but also it keeps me happy with it making me want to play it more just like the soundtrack…
.
The soundtrack was one of the main reasons I played the game from the historical green hill zone soundtrack to the special stage tracks there’s always a catchy tunes that make the game interesting even in the zones I don’t like. Another great example for this is the labyrinth zone theme. I completely hate the zone but the theme makes it bearable. Besides that there are special tracks that are added every time you hit a T.V. Box there’s the high speed shoes which speeds everything up. Then there’s the invincibility theme which runs when you hit it. But these are all great additions to the soundtrack of the game and that’s why I gave the soundtrack a 10 because it’s
one of my favorite parts of the game and I couldn't’t play the game without it.
So overall this game is a great game, and for my final score for the game I’m giving it a 9.5 and here’s why. First off I love Sonic in general and this was one of my favorites compared to all the others. Plus there’s the fact that it was the original, but also to me it beat a lot of the games of the past and even some of the better ones today. The gaming industry is an industry of repetition and in cases of repetition sonic just seems to do it the best I mean call of duty, halo, and all the other games do it but no one does it as good as sonic. However it’s not just the repetition no, because that is followed by the love of the fans and Sonic is loved millions and has been the greatest rival of
sonic for over 20 years and that is why I love the game so much. It’s not just a game you play and you get bored with it’s
a game I could play for years at a time I’m 20 years old and I still play it today which is the main reason I love sonic it is a game for all ages a game you can grow with and a game that will change the way you look at life forever and that’s why I gave this game a 9.5 it is amazing.

Sonic the Hedgehog   vizwiz123
Sonic the Hedgehog. A platformer released in 1991 on the Genesis, it soon became one of the most popular games on the system. Sonic was also a core element in how Sega briefly began to outdo Nintendo in the markets (but that wouldn't last very long, now would it? :P) Anyway, let's get into some features of the game.
There really is no story to speak of, unless you read the manual of course. Dr. Ivo Robotnik has begun kidnapping animals and turning them into robots for his evil plans to rule the world, and it's up to you, Sonic the Hedgehog, a blue hedgehog with spiky hair, epic shoes, and attitude, to rescue all of the animals. Now that that's out of the way, on to what Sonic can do and what he can get.
Sonic can do what pretty much everyone platform character can do, walk/run and jump. But you see, Sonic is all about speed as well. HE can run pretty fast, mainly when running down slopes. TO defeat enemies , you can simply jump on them (except for spike enemies, of course) or you can roll into them by hitting the down button as you run towards them (too bad the Spin Dash isn't here). If you use this rolling technique on a downward slope, you can achieve some massive speed and possibly make it to a few new areas. You can also reach certain platforms and bounce pretty high by using yellow springs, which launch you a good distance, red springs that launch you a great distance, and bouncing on multiple enemies, which earn you points. That doesn't really matter, since the score serves no real use at all in this game.
Along his travels, Sonic will run into some television set-like boxes that contain items in them. First is the Ring Box, which gives you 10 Rings. Rings are essentially your health in this game, because if you run into enemies without rings, you die, so you'll want to hold onto at least one ring. Thankfully, if you're hit while holding rings, you still have a shot at getting them back before they vanish. However, even if you have rings, falling into a bottomless pit or being crushed will lead to death, so watch out for that. You can also get an extra life if you collect every 100 rings you hold on to. Another item are the Speed Shoes. As the music speeds up, Sonic is able to run pretty darn fast. It's pretty awesome, but beware of running into objects at full speed because you didn't see them in time. :P There's also Invincibility, where you can plow through anything without taking damage. Again, bottomless pits and being crushed are still a threat. Lastly, there's the 1-up box, which gives you an extra life.
To get the "real" ending of this game, you need to get the six chaos emeralds, the ultimate sources of power. To access the special stages, you need to get to the end of the stage with at least 50 rings in hand and jump into the giant ring there. Sonic curls up into a ball, and you'll have to guide him through a "maze" with an incredibly trippy background of morphing shapes and colors. In the special stages are Up panels, which speed up the rotation of the stage, the down panels that slow down the rotation, bumpers, and goal panels. Do not touch the goal panels, or you'll be kicked out of the special stage empty handed. Guide Sonic to the end and you'll see the Emerald surround by a bunch of multi-colored blocks. Rub up against them and they'll eventually disappear one by one, and you'll be able to grab the Emerald. Just remember, you have 10 chances to get the 6 emeralds. You can potentially enter a special stage in every zone except the last zone, so hold on to those rings. Now, lettuce move onto the actual game!
Welcome to Green Hill Zone, a.k.a one of the most iconic Sonic levels ever, probably the most iconic. This level is home to green plains and plants with a nice waterfall usually in the background. Here you will encounter your first enemies; hornets, ladybugs, some weird chameleon like things, and fish that constantly hop out of water. This zone is essentially the tutorial zone of the game, as Act 1 and 2 aren't very hard. Act 1 is just basic enemy killing, platforming, and speed sections among infamous loops. Act 2 is more of the same things with a few more spike hazards throw  into the fray. Act 3 is pretty much the boss level of the zone. After breezing through the bit of level Act 3 has, you meet the fat man himself, Robotnik. Riding in his little Eggmobile, he attempts to demolish you with a wrecking ball that slowly swings back and forth near two platforms. This fight is pretty easy. All you gotta do is hit him about 8 times and he'll explode multiple times, magically heal himself, then fly away. After that, you break the capsule full of animals by hitting the switch on top, and all of them are free. Huzzah! Now, onwards to the second zone. Marble Zone.
Marble zone is essentially the buzzkill of this game. After the awesome speed and platforming of Green Hill Zone, you're reduced to not much speed and a lot of platforming and "puzzle" solving and slow movement. IT's not that bad, but I know many people who put the game down because of this zone. Act 1 starts off outside where you have to jump from platform to platform over lava that spews out fireballs. then you go down into the depths of Marble Zone, where you have to wait for slow-moving obstacles to move away, push blocks onto switches, and ride slow moving blocks across lava. Act 2 is pretty much the same, with more spikes that pop out of the floor and some walls. Act 3 is where we confront Robotnik again. This time he floats back and forth between the two platforms, dropping fireballs that cover all of it. He's really easy, just hit him whenever you can and he goes down in no time.
Next is Spring Yard Zone, a somewhat colorful zone full of bumpers and half-pipes. The only new enemies here are these weird hermit crab things that have spikes on top of them, and these mechanical Sonic wannabes that try to run you down when you run down certain slopes. There are plenty of platforming sections and springs to launch you all over the place as well. Act 1 consists of all of that, plus a few spike ball chain parts. Act 2 is that plus more half pipes that include spike balls circling around them. Act 3 marks Eggman's "dramatic" return. Now he hovers around and tries to impale you with a spike whenever you're directly below him. When going back up with the spike, he'll take a part of the floor with him, so finish him quickly whenever he comes down.
Labyrinth Zone is my least favorite zone in the game. Not only is there water, taking away all of your speed, but there are also drill enemies that pop out of the ground to try and get a cheap hit, enemies with spikes rotating around them, annoying platforming sections involving spikes and spike balls, and the risk of drowning. Don't worry, coming to the surface for air or grabbing a bubble underwater will save you from that. Act 1 is pretty basic and relatively short for the most part, but Act 2 is hard because the platforming sections become a little more annoying. Act 3 has a very different Robotnik fight. He's running from you the entire time, and you have to follow up to the top of this vertical tunnel while avoiding spikes and statues that shoot fire at you. OH, and the water is slowly rising. So good luck with that. Definitely the hardest of all the Robotnik fights. After reaching the top, he simply runs away, and you get to free the animals.
Off to Star Light Zone, a great breather from the previous zone. This zone has plenty of speed in it, with a good amount of loops and slopes. Introduced here are the invincible bombs that detonate whenever you get near them. And there are also turrets that shoot fire and fan that only exist to throw your speed out of whack. Act 1 is pretty much speed and a little platforming, not too hard at all. Act 2 introduces some seesaw platforms where you have to bounce the object on one side up in the air, walk to the side it was just on, and launch yourself.
Act 3 brings us Robotnik once again, this time dropping timed bombs onto three seesaw platforms. To beat him, you can either launch the bombs into him or yourself. Either way, he's no problem at all. Onward to the final three act zone of the game.
Scrap Brain Zone, Robotnik's base, and definitely the hardest zone because of all the tricky platforming and the hazards, such as electric rods, flamethrowers, buzzsaws, pig things that throw bombs at you, conveyor belt things that have platforms that spin, and trap doors. That's pretty much Act 1 in a sentence. Act 2 has these gears you can jump and roll on so you can launch yourself into higher places. Oh, and there are random buzzsaws that can completely suprise you. At the end of this act, we meet with Robotnik....who is blocked off by some shield. HE hits a switch and drops us into Act 3, a.k.a Labyrinth Zone Act 4. Trust me, this zone has the most annoying platforming ever. At the end of this act, there is no boss fight, just a bunch of red springs that will launch you up to.....
The Final Zone. It's just a straight hallway into the final fight with Robotnik. There are four piston things on the floor and ceiling, and two will come down to try and crush you, one with Robotnik in it. Then he'll launch four sparks that home in on you. This final fight isn't hard at all, mainly because those two attacks are slow and easy to see coming. When Eggman appears inside one of the pistons, hit him enough times and the whole contraption will explode as Eggman tries to escape in his Eggmobile. Hit him again and he explodes as he slowly floats down to the bottom of the screen. That's it! The game is over! As for the ending......collect the Chaos Emeralds and find out for yourself. :P
Onto my official scores now.
Graphics - 9
Everything looks pretty colorful. Definitely one of the best looking games on the Genesis. Labyrinth zone could have used some more color, than other than that, no complaints here.
Sound - 8.5
The soundtrack is fan-tastic. My three favorite themes are Green Hill, Spring Yard, and Star Light Zone. Not the best soundtrack out there in terms of Sonic games, but still good.
Addictive - 7.5
If you can make it through Marble Zone, then you'll probably be hooked for the rest of the game. Although the level designs can get a bit frustrated, you'll find yourself playing this a lot, especially if you have yet to get all of the Chaos Emeralds.
Story - 5
The story isn't much different from other games. It's the same old bad-guy-is-doing-things-and-it's-up-to-you-to-stop-him type of thing.
Depth - 5
There really isn't anything at all outside of the main game. All you can really do is look for better routes on stages.
Difficulty - 5
This game really isn't that hard. Sure, some of the levels can be a pain, but all of the bosses excluding the Labyrinth Zone boss are pathetically easy.
Overall - 8.5
This game is lacking in some areas, and can be a bit frustrating for newcomers, but it's a title I would definitely recommend picking up.
Thanks for reading my review =3 Have an awesome Monday, heh. :P

“The game that gave Nintendo some tough competition”   sonicthehedgeho..
(Mario) - *Jumps and gets a mushroom* Wha-hoo.  (Mario) *Looks behind himself & see’s whirlwind* Wooaaaah Mama Mia! *Sonic runs in front of the screen* Sonic’s the name and this is my GAME! It’s the chili dog loving blue blur that made Sega reach high popularity and made Nintendo’s mascot Mario have a new and extremely fast rival.  The reasons that Sonic the hedgehog topped Super Mario Bros in some people’s opinion was because of its high speed action in which Sega referred to it as blast-processing  for marketing reasons, and also because of its vibrant colors and background scenery's. However does it still live up to its passion that it had during the early 1990’s or will it fall into the depths of obscurity after 2 decades of its release, we shall find out right now so as sonic would say “Don’t be a slow-mow” let’s start the review!
Graphics: 8 out of 10
The graphics in this game are kind of what you would expect from a genesis game having bright and vibrant colors. However since this was only really one of the first games on the Sega Genesis that made a huge impact you can’t really look down on the graphics that much and it was the start of a new series which usually won't look as impressive as it sequels that later came along.  The details given into the
graphics on each level can most definitely show that the design team at Sega really put their heart and soul when they were developing this game.  From the flower filled and palm tree covered lands of Green Hill Zone, to the underwater depths and cryptic looking scenery of Labyrinth Zone, to even the metallic and polluted city of Scrap Brain Zone. I’m sure that the graphics shall keep you entertained as you play through the game so an 8 out of 10 rating is what I’m giving Sonic the Hedgehog in terms of graphics.
Sound: 10 out of 10
Do I even need to ask how good this games music is? Right when you start the game and Green Hill Zones music starts you get that theme stuck inside your head while you play and as you play through the level you actually start to enjoy the music and you might even say it helps you play through the level better. The sound effects in this game also benefit the player as well especially when you are underwater and you start slowing losing oxygen the music will stop and a fast beeping sound effect will start and you will see the numbers 5-0 showing how long you have until you lose a life due to suffocation, however; if you get and air bubble the music will start up again. This game definitely exceeds in the music and sound effects department in my opinion so a 10 out of 10 is what I’m rating the sound of this game.
Addictiveness: 8 out of 10
I can assure you right now before I finish this section of the review that you will play this game several times even if you have beaten it before. As there are many things you can try out after you’ve become quite skilled at the game, for instance you can try to finish Green Hill Zone Act 1 in 30 seconds or under to earn a massive amount of points. Or you can use the debug mode option by pressing A, A, Up, Down, Left, and Right on the title screen and then press the start button to begin the game while holding down the A, S, and D button on your keyboard. Now you should be able to go into the configuration/debug mode by pressing S in which you can create more enemies, lava pits, rings, platforms and so much more by pressing D to place them on the map. If you think this is the end to what you can do you are incorrect, as there are still 2 different endings to this game which you can receive based on how you go through the game. As you play the game if you intend to just speed through all the levels until the end of the game without collecting the 6 chaos emeralds then you will receive the bad ending in which you see Robotnik tossing all the chaos emeralds from his right hand to his left hand. The good ending can be received by having 50 rings after Act 1 and 2 of each world and jumping into the giant ring at the end of the level/act, once inside you will enter the special stage which is a 360 degree rotating maze in which the chaos emerald lays deep inside covered by barriers which must be hit multiple times before they will break. While you are inside this special stage/maze you can earn a continue by collecting 50 rings scattered through-out the maze as well as 1-ups that you can periodically find but they are hard to achieve since they are
usually place over or near a goal zone which will take you out of the special stage empty-handed (meaning you’ve lost the chance to get the chaos emerald, however; you still get to keep your continues you collected though). You’re probably asking “what is the good ending to this game though?” well...that is.....something you have to find out by beating this game on your own and why not give it a try since this game does have a lot to offer as you have just read so a 8 out of 10 is what the addictiveness earns for this game.
Story: 10 out of 10
As you stand there looking over the green hills and the blue sky while you speed off at the speed of sound as your animal friends watch your impressive moves and attacks and as the applaud while saying your name which is Sonic....Sonic The Hedgehog. Yeah everyday was peaceful and had lots of exploration without any problems to worry about ...that is until a certain doctor came into the picture and captured all the animals from the lands of Mobius and turning almost all of them into robots for his own personal greed of trying to take over the world of Mobius, this doctors name is Robotnik...Dr. Ivo Robotnik who is a scientific genius with an intelligence I.Q. of 300 even though he seems to always make simple mistakes. So when Sonic returns he finds that all of his friends have disappeared and have had robots put in their place, the only way for him to return Mobius back to its original state is to defeat Robotnik in a final showdown and ruin his plans for good. It was an invigorating story which in my opinion far surpassed the story of Super Mario Bros created by Nintendo, an excellent job on the story for this game SEGA so a perfect score of 10 out of 10 is deserved here.
Depth:  8 out of 10
During the course of this game you will have to travel through 6 zones each with 3 acts/parts (excluding Final Zone) and at the end of act 3 in every zone you must face off against one of Robotnik’s mechanical inventions, so if you were to add everything up you would have 18 full length levels (19 if you count the Final Zone) which does make the game quite lengthy especially due to this games hard level of difficulty. Also you have the 6 special stages which I’ve stated how to enter the special stages earlier in the review, however; these are not that important if you just wanted to beat the game but it still does feel good when you collect that 6th (Yes there were only 6 emeralds in the first game) and final emerald and are prepared to see the good ending once you defeat the game. So this game is quite long already without the special stages and playing through the game again with the special stages makes it even longer which does add replay-ability which is something that a lot of games now these days lack. If you want to have a game to occupy you for a big chunk of your spare time then you should definitely try playing this game, it could have had more things to offer though which is the reason why I’m giving this game a 8 out of 10 for depth.
Difficulty: 8 out of 10
When you first start up the game and play through the Green Hill Zone area you might be thinking “Man this game seems like it’s going to be a lot easier compared to Super Mario Bros on the NES” Well if you are thinking that then let me tell you this the Green Hill Zone and Marble Zone areas are just the bottom of the barrel on the difficulty that this game offers, trust me.  Once you enter Casino Night Zone the game progressively starts to get more difficult and more annoying at certain parts especially when you keep hitting the bumpers located all over the stage which will bounce you all over the screen and can be quite irritating. However; if you think the nightmare stops there you are sadly mistaken as afterwards you enter what is quite possibly the most annoying area in any of the Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog games, this area is Labyrinth Zone which is filled to the brim with water. Well that’s the big deal with water since Super Mario Bros had tons of water levels and areas? True but the one thing that Super Mario Bros had that made the game not as difficult was not having to worry about the fear of drowning in water, but in Sonic the Hedgehog if you stay under water for a few seconds you will start hearing the music change into a warning type sound while numbers will appear telling you how many seconds you have before you drown. There are 2 ways in which you can save yourself from drowning #1 obviously being getting above the water to breathe, and #2 is getting the air bubbles which you can find in certain spots of the level. Along with having to make sure that you have enough rings to survive it can cause some gamers to rage quit and I know because I am one of those people who has had that happen various times before, mostly this game is fair in difficulty but sometimes it can be cheap in areas such as Labyrinth Zone so an 8 out of 10 what the difficulty level is in this game.
At the end of the day, Sonic the Hedgehog is still what its worth even though it does have some faults but hey what game doesn’t have any
faults. It did accomplish what SEGA had wanted which was to have a main mascot that would rival Nintendo’s main mascot Mario. In my personal opinion I actually prefer Sonic the Hedgehog on Genesis compared to Super Mario Bros on the NES, both are great game but this is just the game that I prefer the most. So if you have the time to put into this game I’m sure you will enjoy it.......wait....time? *Looks at timer and see’s 9:50* WHAT! I didn’t know I spent this much time on the review I gotta juice before my time runs..... *TIME OVER*

The Beginning of a Sonicboom   Semagorter
Sonic the Hedgehog 1 practically changed gaming forever, even if the game itself isn't all that revolutionary.  No, it's real impact comes from being the first real competitor to Nintendo's admittedly tyrannical monopoly over the console video game market.  But how does it hold up as an actual video game?
The plot is, on the surface, not particularly deep.  The evil Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnick has captured cute little animals inside robots in order to power them, using them to take over the world, and is up to Sonic to rescue the creatures and defeat Eggman-I mean Robotnick.  However, I've noticed a very subtle nature v.s. Technology theme going on, especially in the later levels, but still, it's not deep either, but it's something.  The controls aren't all that different from other platformers of the time.  Move left and right, as well as jump, to either reach new heights or defeat enemies.  However, you could also curl up into a spiky ball that also acts as a means of offense.  Rolling into an enemy defeats it, and you usually curl up into a ball when you jump.  The last part is essential for numerous parts of the game, especially for the bosses.  Also, Sonic can't swim in water.  His motor skills are dampened (pun intended this time) while underwater and if you stay down too long, a pretty haunting track reminiscent of the Jaws theme will play, and if you don't get out in time after that, you'll drown.
The marketing suggests the main draw being the unprecedented speed, in which you go really really fast as opposed to, say Mario.  However, I've noticed that a good majority of the game doesn't involve high speeds of nearly any kind, instead opting for traditional platforming.  Very few moments involve actually going really fast.  The speed was probably used as a hook as opposed to being a more core mechanic in later games.  As such, various maneuvers achievable in later games aren't as applicable here.  The most frustrating derision is the lack of the spin dash, the signature method of building up speed while being in the same position  This makes Sonic 1 on the Genesis/Mega Drive one of the very few games in the franchise where you couldn't do such a thing.  While some slack could be cut due to early installment weirdness, the level design speaks otherwise.  There are many instances, even during Green Hill Zone (the first zone in the game) where you had to build speed by walking back and then rolling at the precise moment.  ...and sometimes it wouldn't work all the way.  (-.5 for lack of easy speed building.)  For example, there's a hidden area in Act 2 of Green Hill Zone where you could only exit (or entered) via the previous method.  You could imagine how annoying it is.
Speaking about level design, despite the speed focus (at least at the time; later games make it look like a non-priority), there were still many alternate paths to the end goal, and the player is forced to decide which one is the best.  Actually, to be fair, paths is an overstatement; you could venture between these "paths" to decide how to get through the level the fastest.  That's, what I believe, the main thing that separates Sonic from other platforming franchises:  While speedrunning is a common activity in video games, Sonic makes it a core element of the series.  It even has a timer on every level to show you how efficient you were at racing through the level.  It's less about the feeling of speed and more about actually getting through the level as quickly as possible.  But I digress.
How are the actual levels?  Well, I've noticed that they seem to slightly flip flop on focusing on either speed or platforming as a whole.  The odd-numbered Zones tend to lean slightly to speed, while the even-numbered ones have a tad more platforming.  At its core, though, it's still mainly about platforming.  However, individual moments in each level may highlight certain aspects despite the general convention of the Zone.  For example, Marble Zone, as a whole, is more about platforming.  However, there's an instance where you have to push a "door" out of the way in order to progress, but as soon as you do so, a stream of lava starts approaching, and you have to get out of there as fast as you could.  Levels do slightly increase in complexity and difficulty, both in platforms and enemies.  Enemies are at least varied and creative, and they do get just a tad harder each time.  You go from Motobugs in Green Hill Zone, to Catapillers in Marble Zone that you could only hit at the head lest you get spiked, to rolling blue robots that chase you around in Spring Yard Zone, and so forth.  Previous enemies do return, though.
Same thing in regards to obstacles.  Early on, there isn't much, but obstacles also vary, and even more so than the enemies, fit with the theme of each level, with many obstacles not appearing outside of their respective zones.  Except for Labyrinth, but if I were to say anymore, spoilers would be the least of my worries.  And speaking about themes, even this early in the franchise, there's definitely some Ur examples at play here, with the most notable example being Spring Yard Zone with its "bouncy" nature developing into the Casino theme we often see in Sonic games to this day.  This despite there being only six themes in the game.
You may have noticed I haven't talked much about power-ups.  Well, there isn't much to say in that department.  The shield power-up protects you from a single hit, the sonic icon power-up gives you an extra life, The sparkle power-up grants you invincibility complete with its own variation of the title theme, and rings may hold various amounts of rings inside of them, though it's usually 10.  Most of these can be found in secret areas or otherwise be off the beaten path.  The more cleverly hidden areas will usually contain an extra life, while more "obvious, but off the road" areas are more likely to contain rings, or a shield if you're lucky.  The power-ups won't save you from bottom-less pits, though.
Rings are an integral part of the game and franchise; they're to Sonic as Coins are to Mario.  If you happen to get hit by an enemy or projectile, you lose all of your rings, and you'll have to collect them back.  The amount of rings that actually drops varies from game to game, but in this instance, there's a limit to how many rings can pop out, with the rest being gone forever.  If you happen to get hit while carrying no rings, you lose a life.  Lose all lives, and it's Game Over.  Now, Sonic Team did took an interesting approach in how to handle continues:  Make the player earn them.  See, every 50,000 points would normally give you an extra life in other games.  However, it instead gives you an extra continue.  You'll know if you got one by a specific sound and a miniature idle Sonic at the end of a stage.
Rings also serve another purpose.  If you happen to hold on to 50 rings by the end of the stage (that's not Act 3), you'll be able to enter a special stage in order to retrieve a Chaos Emerald.  There's six in all, as opposed to seven in later games.  Again, early installment weirdness.  I'd say that accessing the stages is the simplest of the three Sonic games on the Genesis, though actually obtaining the Chaos Emeralds themselves is a different story.  You enter a stage in ball form with interesting patterns in the background as you work your way in a rotating maze trying to reach the emerald.  There's certain circles that make the rotation go back and forth, or alter its speed.  If you hit a goal, though, you end the stage with no emerald.  The emerald is usually protected by certain colored diamonds, and touching them makes them change colors until they disappear.  The bonus stages, like the Zones, get increasingly difficult, but should you fail a bonus stage, the next time you enter a bonus stage, it'll have moved on to the next one.  I'm sure it loops around, but this does get slightly annoying.  Plus, you don't get that much chances of actually doing so.  Not enough for a full point deduction, since this is a bonus, and the reward isn't that amazing, unlike future games, but it's something to keep in mind.  (-.5 for frustrating bonus.)
I'd say the difficulty is fairly well-balanced, assuming you know what you're doing.  But there isn't a save system, at least not an easy one.  There is a code that allows you to access a stage menu and allow you to pick which Act you'd like to start with, but it's not that common.  I'm not even sure it saves the best time for each level, which is odd, considering that it's one of the trademarks of the series.  It's thankfully not that long, and as such, it's more comparable to NES titles as opposed to, say SNES ones.  Still, it's something of a transitional game as far as difficulty and accessibility goes.  This part's hard to explain; I'll admit it.
Graphically, it's beautiful, even if the technology isn't being pushed that far.  There's a lot of visual tricks like loops and slides that weren't exactly present before in many games, but more importantly, it sports a fantastic art direction, making it one of the earliest examples of the importance of aesthetic design.  This helped immensely, as the Genesis, sans processor, was technologically inferior to the SNES in nearly every way.  The environments look like they've been cut out of paper or made of some real plastic material (if that made any sense), and everything else is distinctive and varied.  The color palette is used wisely, as well, giving each world it's own unique theme and being very, VERY easy to recognize.  Sonic himself even has an idle pose, which was rare back in the day.  All in all, it's one of the top looking early Genesis games, despite the technological inferiority.
The music is also top-notch.  Pretty much every major track is spot-on, and while we all have our favorites (Hello, Starlight.), nonetheless, they all fit the mood or at least very enjoyable to the ears.  The exception being the drowning music, of course.  Sounds are also well-done, though generally unnoticeable thanks to the music.  You'll at least know which sounds indicate which effect, and they're fairly iconic, as most of them (especially the lose rings sound effect) have been reused in Sonic games twenty years later.  It should also be noted that Sonic is one of those series where, like franchises like Donkey Kong, Final Fantasy, and Megaman, it's particularly renowned for its soundtracks, despite not having as many concerts as, say, Final Fantasy.  It's closer to Megaman in terms of reputation; many rockin' songs over the years to keep our ears pounding.  ...in a good way.  In other words, music is one of the first things that comes to gamers' minds when they think of Sonic.  I guess that rock band backstory that was cut out of the original game makes more sense now, doesn't it?  Overall, the audio is top of the line, and may have pushed what the audio chips in the Genesis were capable of, and as such rightfully kick-started it's famous sound career for many years to come.
In conclusion, Sonic the Hedgehog 1, despite some outdated elements, is a worthy competitor to Nintendo at worst, and the perfect rival at best.  The game blew people's minds back in '91 back in the day, and despite me personally preferring Super Mario World for various reasons, there can be little doubt that Sonic 1 made an impact, and it hit hard.  (+.5 for said impact.)  So how could it be improved even further?
1 - Add in the Spin Dash.  Seriously, the level design and mechanics are slightly at odds here in this regard, and it makes building speed, one of the series trademarks, more frustrating than it should be.  Thankfully, I've heard that remakes and ports of this game have added in the spin-dash feature.
2 - Improve the bonus stages.  If I were to fail a bonus stage, I'd like to try again to see if I can reach the dang emerald.  ...okay, that was unintentional on my part.

Very great game for the Sega Genesis   IgorBird122
This game, Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis became a very great game for the system and really brought Sonic into the gaming industry. This was the game where we seen Sonic's debut into video gaming, mostly because Sega wanted to create a game to compete against Nintendo, and thus, we have Sonic the Hedgehog. Even 22 years later after Sonic's debut, Sonic is really going strong.
The Graphics:
The graphics it this game are what you would expect from a Genesis game very colorful and each of the Zones in the game are really done and the backgrounds plus the foregrounds are very awesome, and for a '91 game, the graphics are really nice and outstanding. Sega really put a lot of effort into creating this game to compete against Nintendo in the 16-bit Wars.

I'll give this a perfect 10 out of 10.
------
The Sound/Music:
The Music in the same is great for the Genesis, some parts in the music sound a little off, but for a 16-bit game, that's alright. Each of the music that is played in each Zone really goes great with the one you're playing in which is a great thing Sega did nonetheless
For the sound effects, they're pretty great as well, like some of the things you hear mostly when you hit an enemy and you loose your rings, that sound, although it's a bad thing, but it does sound really great, and not just that, but the enemies you hit it has that "pop" sound it it's nice to hear that.

I give this a 9 out of 10
------
The Addictiveness:
The Addiction level in this game is great, it's a fun game to try out and whats you to come back and play some more of this game, if you haven't played this game before, you'll become hooked onto this game really quickly because of all the challenges you can experience.
Every level in the game really wants the player to play on and wants the player to try and beat it which can be pretty addicting.

I give this a 9 out of 10
------
The Story:
There isn't much of a story in this game other than you stop Robotnik from taking over the world. While Sonic chases Robotnik down, he attacks enemies and frees his furry friends from the robots and once he finally comes face to face with him in the final level, you do all you can to stop him once and for all and end his plans of taking over the world.

I give this a 6 out of 10
------
The Depth:
This game do in a way got a bit of material and a pretty decent amount of enemies in the game. You travel though 6 Zones (3 acts each) and a Final Zone where you face Robotnik and stop his evil plans. Once you get enough rings, you can unlock a bonus ring at the end of the level and you have to jump into the ring at the goal to advance to the bonus level to try and get a continue once you get a game over..

I give this a 7 out of 10
------
The Difficulty:
The Difficulty is really hard, it's once you get a game over, once you do, their isn't any game overs and you have to start all over from the beginning which is a pain to do, especially when you're near the end and you get a game over and have to go all the way back, although they're a way to get continues in the bonus levels.

I give this a 8 out of 10
------
Overall:
Overall, this game is a very great game to play of you haven't played this game before, this game is really recommended to play. This game was a huge boost for the Genesis in the 16-bit Wars competing against Nintendo's SNES, and even for someone that on the SNES side, this game here was a really awesome game to play. With Sonic's success, he ended up getting a squeal and a character that's going to last a very long time, even 22 years, he still got it.

Overall, I give this game a 9.5 out of 10

A start of a legend   theironhide
Hey guys, Theironhide here and I'm going to review the original Sonic the hedgehog for the Sega Genesis.
If you guys know even a little about me, then you should know that I'm a huge fan of the Sonic the hedgehog series. Even thought I do like the 3D games more, I still get enjoyment out of the 2D games as well. This game was the begin of the epicness that we know Sonic for today and is often seen as 1 of his best games. I personally disagree on this being the best, but that doesn't say I hate it. Well with all of that said, lets begin.
Graphics: 8
To be honest, this game is far from the best what the Genesis has to offer graphic wise. But that can be excused since it was the first game on the system. The levels are very well designed graphic wise. From the bright and colourful Green Hill, to the dark and industrial horror that is Scrap Brain. Sonic looks good for the time as well, with so many different animations for his sprite.Overall, the game setted up a nice standard for later Genesis games and the later SNES.
Sound: 8
It really saddens me that I can't rate the sound higher. I love Sonic music as much as many other fans and sometimes even haters do. And the sound effects work too, but the game lacks the truly great tracks. To be honest the only tracks I liked in this game (level themes) were Green Hill, Marble and Labyrinth. The others 3 didn't quite appeal to me. I don't care about the Starlight and Scrap Brain themes at all, and the Spring Yard theme is just so boring. Even though I really like the boss theme and the final boss theme is ok.
Addictiveness: 8
Like I said before, I disagree on this being the best Sonic game, but I do like it game play wise. I like how fast phased the game is (especially in Green Hill and Starlight), and I also like the special stages (even thought they could be frustrating as times). The game does have some flaws. Spring Yard was pretty boring in my opinion, and I doubt that I even need to talk about Labyrinth (painful childhood memories anyone? lol). Also, most of the bosses were pathetically easy. The only boss that gave me trouble was the Labyrinth boss, and you don't even need to kill Eggman (or Robotnik as he was called at the time, but I grew up with his Eggman name so I just name him Eggman) in order to win.
Story: 4
Like the Mega man games (the platformers I reviewed I mean, check those out if you're done with this by the way), the story of this game isn't very original. It's the basic for a 2D Sonic: Eggman tries to take over the world by using kidnapped animals to power his robots and Sonic has to stop him. It isn't the most creative story out there, but It doesn't matter since nobody plays these games  for the story.
Depth: 6
Lets be honest, there isn't much left to do with this game after playing it out besides from replaying it. Sure, you could play out special stages to unlock the good ending, but it's not much different from the bad ending. It isn't something like the second game were you unlock the super form by it.
Difficulty: 7
Similarly to Fire Emblem: Monshou no Nazo (check my review of that game by the way), you should be fine if you know how to play the games. However, it will most likely get you of guard if you're not careful. You may think this game is just basic running and jumping, but it's harder then you might think at first glance.
Overall, this game is a very solid start to a great video game series. This game isn't my favorite game in the series, but it's still fun to play (even thought, I don't play it on vizzed anymore now that I have the collection game on my DS).I give it an 8.1 . This has been Theironhide, and Super Mario World can suck it compared to this game (DON'T FEEL OFFENDED, THAT LAST STATEMENT WAS JUST AN OPINION)

Sonic The Hedgehog Review   XxEzraxX
Sonic the Hedgehog was my very first plat former game, and I must say I was not disappointed. I loved Sonic, to be honest and I'm sure I am probably going to get a lot of hate for saying this, but I think Sonic was way better than Mario. Not saying that I don't like Mario, I do but I like Sonic more. Anyway, I grew up with the Sega Genesis and Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2, also Spinball but that is for a different review. I played the crap out of these games and never got bored of them. Even though they do lack story, I mean they never did tell you what Robotnik was up to really, you just kind of assume that he is after world domination. Or he just really hates Hedgehogs?
It's really no surprise that I rated this game a 10 overall, not to say that there are a few things that make this game less than perfect, it is still a great game nonetheless. And every game has a flaw or two. As for Sonic's flaws, sometimes you'll go to fast and hit something VERY unexpectedly and there was also the fact that it did not support saving up until the third installment of the series. Having a Genesis as a kid if you wanted to beat this game you had to leave the system on all night because saving was not an option, to bad too. If Sonic could have saved than this game would get pretty much no criticism from me at least.
Graphics and sound I rated a 9, the game looks and sounds amazing. The graphics, especially for its time look fantastic it is not all pixelated like the NES was and you could tell what everything was. The music was catchy and often got stuck in my head, but it wasn't bad. I really enjoyed listening to the music and sounds that came from this game. The Sonic series had some of the best game music I have ever heard, and I still at times hum a lot of the tunes, especially the Casino Zone song from the second game.
As for addictiveness, since this game was very hooking for me I gave it a 10. I always played Sonic when I was a kid. I still pick it up from time to time, I am still a lucky and proud owner of a Sega Genesis and the copy of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. I remember when I first played Sonic, I was instantly addicted. I played all night the first time, and was told to stay away from the Sega for a while because of playing to much Sonic. So needless to say this game and series is fantastic to me.
The story I rated a 4, because to be honest I don't really know if there was one. There was never any speech or dialogue box to follow, and you never really knew what Robotnik was after. Of course I think it is safe to assume world domination or something of the sort since Sonic doesn't have a Princess or a girlfriend. That is not until later in the franchise. As for depth a 7, this game has a lot of Zones and secret stages where you can collect Chaos Emeralds. The secret stages where not to complicated in this game, or the second one for that matter. All you had to do was control a spinning Sonic in a crazy maze like dimension(?) and find the emerald. Plain and simple, but you could not touch these strange looking red orb things because it would end the stage. Now for difficulty, I rated the game a 5. When I was first getting into the game I thought it was kind of hard but I think that was because I was young. But now when I play it I easily breeze through the game. Often times I'll perform speed runs of the game just to see how much I remember and how well I can play the game.
Overall Sonic the Hedgehog is a great game, and an awesome franchise and I seriously recommend the first installment. Especially if you are into plat formers, and I know that Mario fans often give Sonic hate, but I think that if they tried it they could grow to really like Sonic too. Anyway, until my next review thanks for reading.

GOTTA GO FAST GOTTA GO FAST oh wait hit athe side of a spring   ThanatosUnraveld
Its sanic the hoghedge and  its his very first game all the way back on the Sega Genesis, so we all know modern day sonic games are ehh (well depending on if you think sonic 06 is a good game or not.) And we all know that every gamer is always talking about who is better is it Mario is it Sonic NO ITS ALEX KIDD then there is a awkward silence and that person is quietly walked out of the room, but I shall keep all my bias at the door the awkward person just walked out of.  but what about the pre jump into 3d you know the good old timely 2d games you don't know what I'm talking bout (that awkward young person again -,,-), well guess wheat's its time to find out.
Its time to find out if all that blast processing really means anything for this games Graphics (no it doesn't) if there is one thing I can say about the graphics is that they are really good everything is nice and bright and colorful that's for sure. Be it the grassy green um well grass of the green hill zone or all the brown rocks and blocks that is in Labyrinth zone every zone in the game has its own kind of new design and color that isn't in the last zone. I also think how good the game looks give it a good sense of speed (and that's the point of this game series) which everything so smooth and so 'natural' it makes it seem like you are rolling around at the speed of sound. The character and enemy designs also look really good which is great because well it is, Sonic is blue (derrrrrrrrrrrrr) and a bit pudgy (so how does he move so fast then?)  Sonic is also well designed in terms of animation Sonic himself is very smooth he goes from his normal 'running' animation to his running animations very smoothly so you can really feel like he is really getting faster which helps you get into the game he also have a nice jump (said no one ever to anyone in real life.) Which might just be me but its looks a bit floaty it doesn't feel floating but it looks it (that probably only made sense in my head) the enemies look like they where made for the areas that they are in (except for the bats with the motor for a butt.............) but I kind of wish they did more I mean most of them only have one attack and just either off screen and never come back or just walk around and be boring oh well. Just because you are the fastest animal in all the humanoid family doesn't mean you cant look good and Sonic sure proves that with a 8 out of 10 in the Graphics.
Just because you are going faster then Sound doesn't mean you cant have some jamming music to go along with it and would you believe that the music is awesome because well guess it is sooooooooo good. I will state now that I think (in my opinion) that Sonic games can (when done right) some of the best video game music evah and when not done right its just meh. But you know sense its the first game in the series it has to have awesome music because................. law of averages? But anyways the music has that sort of energetic kind of feel to it that makes you want to go fast (gotta go fast, gotta fast, gotta go faster, faster, faster, faster..............) one of the easiest examples of what I mean is Green Hill Zone if you never heard this track then what is wrong with you?! Not only is it how you show how good your soundtrack with something like that but it also says: Hey your going to have fun so why not have fun going fast with some great music? Which this game does really good and also the tracks all match the areas too except more Marble Zone they should have just looped the evil laugh over and over from the American version of Sonic CD, no but I think that Marble Zone is one of my favorite tracks in the game. And yes the sound effects all sound great (cept of sonic getting a bubble underwater I know they where trying to make it sound like he was gulping it but it sounds just a bit to high pitched to me) be it the sound of sonic turning around with that skidding sound effect to the classic sound effect of getting to the goal post. If you heard the sound effects on there own you might question just what half of these are used for but then you play the game and just forget about that question because everything just somehow matches the game even that trippy sound effect you hear when you go into a special stage (ALIENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) So weather you think the sonic games soundtracks are terrible or just awesome we can all agree that some of the music and sounds are classic (at least in this game) so the Sound gets a GREAT 10 out of 10
The addictiveness of Sonic the Hedgehog is really dependent on if you like to do fast paced platforming or not, if you do then you will like the game if you don't and want to do something a bit slower then go play Super Mario Bros (no insult because I know someone out there will take it as one.) If you are ready for high speed antic's (except for Marble zone...........) then have lot of fun with this game and you never know this might be a game you replay every now and then rather then pick it up, beat it, put back down kind of game. You might also like this game if you like to collect stuff but are not a collect-a-thon kind of person as there are Chaos Emeralds in the game so you could go out of your way to get them, don't worry there aren't too many only 6 (maybe they should make more of them..........) so its not like it would take 385 days/2 to get all of them. You may even like this game if you re someone who are in to playing just short games because well this game is not to long at all (which may turn some people off really.) And of course you would really like this game if you are a big fan of platformer games because well guess what it is a platformer game. And you might also like this game if you liked Super Mario Bros (I know its a taboo thing to like both right) its really similar in terms of gameplay Sonic's just faster and cant shoot thing with fire underwater (or breath for too long in it either) the most obvious difference is that Sonic is animal so if you liked being a human then well nothings really changed. So if you like any of the things above or just want to play a sonic? platformer for the first time then this would be a great game to play and ill give the Addictiveness of the game a 6 out of 10.
You know it seems like old video games didn't really have that much in terms of story (great big gasp) and this game (and the series really, well most time) are the exact same way. So what is the story you might ask well here it is: A hedgehog named sonic is trying to stop a evil fat man named Doctor Robotnik from turning all the animals that he has into robots and also to get some chaos emerald's. But hey that last part doesn't really mean anything because all it does is change the ending (so it does mean something then,) but rather then that the storyline is really bare boned. I also cant really say anything about any of the characters as we really don't know anything about any of them at this point which is odd because there is really only two people Sonic and Robotnik, what is Robotnik using the animals for, why is he doing it, WHO is he? And same could be said for Sonic I guess you could say he is just trying to help his friends but maybe he is just hateful to fat men with moustaches (wait a minute................) and how is Sonic, Sonic how come he can run so fast or have a frame of a human? We don't get any answers and well............ I really could careless to be honest because it doesn't seem like most of these questions will ever be answered, and that is a bit of a shame but nothing ill lose any sleep over. So the Story is really not that important at all in anyway but it still tries a bit to have a story which is promising and its gets a not so promising score of 2 out of 10.
Because Sonic the Hedgehog is a liner platformer that makes you go through scripted stages there really inst that much Depth to the game. But that doesn't mean it has none what so ever but what it does offer is fun game which is all that it really needs to offer but it also has special stages in each level (minus the third stage of each zone) which in those special stages are the Chaos Emerald's that you can collect to get the good ending. But lets get back to the Zones there are 6 zones with each of them having 3 acts in each of them so in total there are 19 levels total, at the end of each third act there is a boss fight with Robotnik and each fight isn't hard so its not like your going to die 7 times during each fight. And the game in a whole can be a short depending on how fast and good you are at platforming so if your really good it will be a breeze to beat if not then well its still not going to be a long game. And sense you can only play as Sonic there is no mutiplayer mode so your kind of alone for this game, how sad right? So in reality there really isn't too much to do in this game rather then go fast, listen to the soundtrack and have fun which is kind of average but hey its fun (like I've stated a lot so far) so ill give the Depth a 5 out of 10.
Now what is the Difficulty of this game well the game isn't really that hard nor is it that easy like I stated before its really how good you are at platforming and knowing where the enemies are at. Some of the most hardest points of the game is: Labyrinth zone just because part of the zone is underwater so if you hear the drowning theme and your not close to the surface then you gonna be DEAD! And then there is the special stages when can sometimes be a pain just to get there, to do it you need to grab 50 rings and get to the end of the stage without losing any of them and then jump into a ring after you get to the goal post. Once you get into the stage you have to get to the Emerald which is surrounded by theses weird gem things which can take a away to make them go away, and the stage moves around all the time, AND there is a goal which is where you do not want to go or else you wont get the Chaos Emerald. So the game really isn't hard at all and even if you are not someone who doesn't like to play platformers you still wont have a too hard of a time trying to beat the game, o ill give the Difficulty of Sonic the Hedgehog a 4 out of 10.
Wow has it really been 23 years sense Sonic the Hedgehog came out, well then the game might be really old but that doesn't stop the game from bring really fun. And it also doesn't stop this game from being re released a bazillion times like it has now a days so even if you think you don't you have a way to play the game, YOU DO heck they even sell this game on toilet paper. But I'm not going to lie I really like this game and the game series that it has spawned over the year (even if some of the games wasn't fun) So weather you are a new Sonic fan or a old one, or not even a Sonic fan at all you should at least play the original once in a while because I give it a 9 out of 10.

Sonic the Hedgehog   Redrunelord
The danger with any capitalist system is a true monopoly: if a single party has the monopoly in finances, then they are going to maintain said monopoly and what they says goes. The video game industry also flies like this: should a single company have the vast majority of the finances, support and resources, then they could do essentially whatever they want. Nintendo had a majority, technically, during the late 80's and early 90's, but they did have a major competitor on the console market: Sega. Sega had significant resources and some good games, but they just were not able to appeal to the masses with a central character, like Nintendo was doing with Mario.
Then came Sonic.
For the first time, Sega managed to give Nintendo a real punch in the gut, and Sonic the Hedgehog rocketed into the mainstream. The game that was meant to try and rival Mario put up a bitter fight until Sony finally knocked Sega's console market onto it's knees. Nonetheless, Sonic still appears in games to this very day which is testament to his legacy and the fight he put up against Mario and Zelda. Yet, about twenty years later, do the original Sonic the hedgehog game he debuted in hold up?
A first impression makes a huge difference in preparing a flagship character and franchise, so this starts with how the game looks. Visually, the game is still very colorful to this day. A very bright character for a generally bright game. The visuals are 16 bit so they generally are superior to Mario's 8 bit counterpart (Though Sega also had a sonic game on the Master System). Even for 16 bit, they are fairly well done and it is clear that Sega put a lot of effort into making this an appealing game to look at. The areas are divided into a few possibly zones, and each major zone got a different theme to it. For an arcade game, the visuals are very good, with fairly fluid animation even for the console's standards. As well, the images were perfect for both children and adults, with a colorful style for children but not so much as to turn parents away either. Overall it is excellent. The sound department isn't as good though, but it still works. The key thing with the audio is that, like many games following similar tones, is that it is bright. Just like all video games with generally bright sound tracks, it follows the same advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is mainly that it gets the player into an almost adventurous mood, but the disadvantage is tolerance. This is applied to both the music and sound effects.
The story...is virtually non-existent in the video game. The basic premise is that Dr. Robotnic is threatening the zones with his robotic creations and Sonic has to stop his industrial movement. While this would be expanded in later games and other media (Like most of the cartoons and ) What must still be considered is that this is an Arcade game, and the story don't matter nearly as much as the game play does. As well, it's direct competition still stuck to it's save the princess formula despite already having several games to develop it further, so for the time it can't be criticized.
The game play is side scrolling at high velocities to reach the end of the level. To quote the Nostalgia Critic, he "Has weapons of mass acceleration." the levels are a lot larger proportionately than some of it's contemporaries, and it set the bar for future games following a similar style. The basic idea is to race towards the end of the stage before the timer hits 10 minutes. Every few stages, there would be a boss battle with Dr. Robotnic. The player runs across the stages collecting rings, and these rings acts as a shield of sorts. Should the player get hit by an enemy or hit some spikes without any rings, they lose a life and go back to the last checkpoint (a lamp post). If they have any rings, then the attack blasts all the rings out of the player, saving them from death. Since the rings flashes on screen for a brief moment, it is technically possible take a lot of abuse provided the player collects at least one ring before they fade away. Sonic will also be able to break mechanical blocks where inside a shield is waiting where sonic is immune to any an all damage. This is useful for the more hazardous areas and is recommended in grabbing whenever it can safely be done. As well, these blocks may also hold 10 rings which helps the player out a lot. Why? Sega took influence from games like Mario and designed Sonic so that this blue hedgehog will gain an extra life with every hundred rings. As well, building up rings enables the player to perform a bonus stage at the end of some "acts" or levels to try and get a Chaos emerald. This is an extra incentive to play the game well, and actually try to collect the rings.
The game play works fairly well overall, but the big issue is due to being the genesis of the series. Some issues that transpire from being the first primarily has to do with building up speed. In later games, the easiest way to go faster is stay stationary and charge up a charge of sorts to make more difficult jumps. However, this first game didn't have that and the player would be required to go back a distance to build up momentum. While this is realistic, it is incredibly annoying, particularly in later stages when the player may be pressed for time. As well, while sonic is incredibly fast, he absolutely can not go fats all the time or otherwise will die due to unforeseen traps. In all fairness, this is true with most games that are 2D in design, so it isn't so much of a flaw as a minor irritation to impatient humans. Nonetheless, the game play is largely solid and works well for both kids and adults as the controls are straightforward, and the game play is simple on the whole.
This does not mean the game is too easy. The difficulty is classic late 80's early 90's video game difficulty, but it is still not outrageous. It follows the formula of "start easy, grow more difficult as one progresses"  instead of doing what "The Legend of Zelda II" did with having sporadic difficulty. This helps immensely to get players in and keep them in to overcome the challenges. This also helps replay value, as players can try to compete faster with higher scores and not be completely bored in the later stages.
To conclude, how does this game hold up? It has its flaws associated with being the genesis of a series, yet it is still playable. It is generally recommended to stick to its sequels 2 and 3, or find one of the PC compilation packs that has several games in one, but it wouldn't do any psychological damage to revisit this title, or visit it for the first time to see how the series may have started. The 3D games may be questionable in quality, but this 2D title is not.

Sonic The Hedgehog on the Sega Genesis!   Stevie 764
Here is a review of the original classic Sonic The Hedgehog game for the Sega Genesis.
How to play: You play as Sonic, the hero of the planet "Mobious" and is stopping Robotnik from taking over the worlds after stealing the flickies and trapping them into robots to stop Sonic from getting to Robotnik, and the emeralds in which Robotnik uses to take over the world. Sonic will not accept this happening and ventures out to stop Robotnik at all costs.
Graphics - 10
Just like in my "Kirby's Epic Yarn" review, it is neat designs, but this game outstands Kirby's Epic Yarn by much in graphics. This game takes graphics and design to a whole new level to "Awesome [s]Sauce[/s] Land". The designs are great, the backgrounds and everything was probably created in "Awesome [s]sauce[/s] Land". I give the graphics a jawdropping 10.
Sounds - 9
The sounds are amazing also, same with the music, because this is a 16-bit Sega console. Try comparing the Sega Master System/Game Gear versions with the Genesis, and you will know that the Genesis can beat the 8-bit systems by a huge mark. I give the sounds a 9.
Addictiveness - 8
It is a very fun game to play, if you ever play this somewhere in your life, you may want to glue your eyes right to your TV or the computer if you are playing on there. I don't see why should you not play this, so I give the addicting rating a 8.
Depth - 7
Although there is only 6 zones and 1 final zone, there are 7 zones and 19 acts in total, each zone except zone 7 has 3 acts, and the final zone has just 1 act where you fight robotnik and take him down. I do like how long this is, but the biggest problem is that there is no saves, which makes a horror stress in your body if you don't have continues left or you have to go to bed and turn off your genesis. I give the depth a 7.
Difficulty - 8
The game starts easy, but it jumps up a huge gap with each zone, which means that you have to practice and learn who you beat each level. I could never even beat the Labyrinth Zone, even if I had continues, act 3 is the big problem because of the water rise stuff. I tried so hard to beat Labyrinth Zone, but the third act completely destroys every one of my lives and every continue I have, I even try so hard that I become very frustater after getting a Game Over so many times and having to start ALL over again! I give the difficulty a 8.
Overall - 9
The game is awesome, I just can't resist how much I liked the Sonic series, it was very good, the controls are smooth, the gameplay is amazing. If you ever see this game, BUY IT, don't miss out on a great game franchise.
This has been a review from the member who will try to be Site Staff soon, Stevie 764. Thanks for checking out the review, and I will make tons of future reviews, same with finally being Site Staff. ;)

OVERVIEW

The very first Sonic the Hedgehog game to bless the fans of the Sega Genesis and with this game, Sonic became the newest and permanent mascot of Sega. Sonic is an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog whose friends have been kidnapped by the evil Dr. Ivo Robotnik aka Eggman in Japan and in later Sonic games. Sonic is billed as the fastest thing alive but that has been rendered as BS thanks to Robotnik who always managed to outrun Sonic no matter what. He even outruns Super Sonic in the sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Along the way you need to collect six Chaos Emermalds in order to see the true ending of the game or else you will be told to Try Again with Robotnik juggling the Chaos Emeralds that you missed.

GRAPHICS - A

The 16-bit era was still in its infancy at the time of this games release and this game took full advantage of what the graphics had to offer at the time being. Let's start with the Green Hill Zone for example, the place has wonderful scenery of grass, palm trees and in the Japanese version, clouds that move. The water sparkles real nicely. Marble Zone does not get its name from marbles you play with. It is named after the fact that the majority of the stage is made out of marble. If you look closely at the pillars you will almost see Mario's face imprinted in there. It is also filled with molten lava that can erupt and the graphics from it doing so is oh so amazing. Spring Yard Zone pits you inside of a giant pinball machine without the flippers but they don't make their debut until the next game. There are a lot of sparkling background effects that spells out words. In fact, the original name for the Spring Yard Zone was going to be called Sparkling Zone. Labyrinth Zone's graphics take advantage of physics graphicwise. Whatever is underwater whether it be land, enemies, or even yourself will change color to match its color filter. I also love the cave atmosphere of the level as well. Star Light Zone is like going on a roller coaster without the cart. The level is filled with loops, blinking lifts, and heavy pitfalls. The levels are extremely shorter compared to other levels as you can complete the first two acts in under a minute. Scrap Yard Zone shows a wonderful industrial power plant background in Act 1, a gear factory in Act 2, and somewhat of a Labyrinth Zone Act 4 for Act 3 with the water being purple this time and the background being gray. Again the water changes the color of the objects behind it. This was originally going  called the Clock Work Zone but the W would not render. The Final Zone pits you against Robotnik for the last time and even the background will fight against you as Robotnik will try to squish you with it.  However, all those zones pale in comparison to the oh so lovely Special Zone where the graphics are so beautiful it literally takes a dump on all the zones, it is that good. The bubbles, the fish, the birds, the sky in the background. All the way down to the foreground itself which is made out of shiny jewels that will leave you lost in euphoria. The final bit of detail I will discuss is the ending. If you get all the emeralds you will see Sonic toss them up as they vanish and flowers appear followed by Sonic jumping into the screen in excitement. Let's also not forget the very end where Robotnik stomps on the END sign which you can tell he is using his cartoon catchprase, "I hate that hedgehog"

CONTROLS - A

One positive thing to say here is that you only need to things to play the game, the control pad and whatever button you want to use. That's right. You can use any button besides the start button to jump onto obstacles and enemies but do not jump on the spikes or spiky enemies unless you can land on their faces then you will come out okay. One thing I like about the controls is that it takes advantage of real time physics in concerns with the way the environments can affect your movements. Labyrinth Zone and Scrap Brain Zone Act 3 will make you move a bit slower than usual as well as jump slower. Holding down when going down a half pipe will make you boost higher than normal. You also have the ability to curve your jump if you think you jumped wrong but be quick about it. Another ability Sonic has is that he can turn into a ball while running by hitting down during a run and he can look up or down to see what is above or below him. That set the tone for other games to include that feature like Bubsy in his game series.

GAMEPLAY - A+

You go through six zones of gameplay with various degrees of difficulty. If you happen to input the stage select code at the title screen (up, down, left, right, hold A and press start) then you may see that the zones are out of sync. The reason for that is it was going to be the original order of the zones before they got switched around so as you can see Labyrinth Zone (fourth zone) was originally going to be the second zone but SEGA didn't want to make the game too difficult early on so it got bumped back to fourth and Marble Zone was made the second zone instead of third and Spring Yard Zone went to third from fifth and Star Light Zone went from fourth to fifth. With the exception of the last two songs, the ending medley actually played the original zone lineup in order.

Just like any other game Sonic also got its share of bugs that can hurt you. For example, in the US version of the game, spikes were ultimately lethal as you were provided no invincibility from them if you got hit. This would be addressed in the Japanese version of the game. I guess Sonic caught the same syndrome that affected another blue character in his debut game. I'm looking at you Mega Man/Rockman. Another thing that people associate as started off with Sonic but actually happened in other games was being killed instantly by being smashed. It's a tough way to go out but even the slightest touch was a killer.

SOUND/MUSIC - A+

The music is totally off the chain and a wonderful soundtrack. Some of the tracks were most likely inspired by songs by real music artist. Marble Zone sound similar to "Watch the Girls Go By" by Andy Williams, Spring Yard Zone sounds so much like "Every Little Step" by Bobby Brown, and Labyrinth Zone sounds like "Too Be Real/Best of My Love/If You Do For Me" by varying artists. The Special Zone music sounds soothing but it got changed into a lullaby in Sonic 4 Episode 1.

REPLAYABILITY - A

Sonic 1 has been ported lots of time and it will never grow old unless you played the GBA port which was a piece of garbage. The original Sonic set the stage for speed and accuracy and graphics and some companies took note of that to make their games look better even though others went down the drain with their games.

OVERALL - A

This game may have had its flaw here and there but it was a wonderful masterpiece for Sonic's first game out the blocks. Too bad SEGA decided to pull the plug on Alex Kidd and Wonder Boy like that. They were every bit of a SEGA mascot as Sonic was. Guess they must have run their course and at least Sonic is guaranteed to keep his spot as their mascot.

Tyri Reviews Sonic 1   RavusRat
Hey there this is a review for Sonic The Hedgehog on the Genesis.
I am actually a huge nerd and a huge fan when it comes to the classic Sonic the Hedgehog games. Mainly because the first console I owned myself was a Sega Mega Drive, which is known as the Genesis in America.. Since then I have pretty much spent the last 20 years enjoying Sonic Games.. Though let's be honest recently they've been a bit lacking in maintaining quality.. Anyway enough about me, let's focus on the game
Graphics
The graphics in Sonic The Hedgehog are actually pretty decent considering it was one of the first games out for the Genesis. The sprites all look amazing and there's not really any huge graphical issues or glitches.. Sonic as the main character always stands out which is vital in a 2D platformer. Also the backgrounds of the levels whilst very basic at times do not distract from the action in the foreground., It just adds more atmosphere to each zone whilst not being overly busy. They also do some neat effects such as slowly morphing birds into fish in the special zones. Which believe it or not was pretty advanced at the time. Overall there's nothing inherently wrong with the graphics at all and everything is clean and easy to spot as well.
Sound
The sound for Sonic the Hedgehog is also rather good in my opinion, With many of the tracks being memorable. The music fits well with the stage and also due to the nature of the Genesis sound chip (aka the Genesis Twang) It makes some of the levels music sound amazing such as Scrap Brain Zone. The music I would say is usually at a lower tempo than the more recent Sonic Games however.. With the later sonic games there more about fast beats and guitars. Whilst Sonic 1's Soundtrack is relatively relaxing. Overall the Music is great.. But as it's a Sonic game that really shouldn't be that surprising
Addictiveness
Honestly speaking I don't really find Sonic the hedgehog 1 that addictive or replayable. I mean you do have the Chaos Emeralds to collect but as their are only 6 to collect the ability to become Super Sonic does not exist in this version of the game. Also I would say that Sonic the Hedgehog is slightly harder than the next 2 games. Mainly due to the game being based more about solid platforming rather than the speed that later Sonic Games have. Another problem is that there is no multiplayer at all. It's solely a one player game. So after completing the game there's really not much more to offer especially if you complete it and get the chaos emeralds.. Overall Sonic is not really a game that I believe many people will come back to a lot. I think the later 2 games are far better suited for that.
Story
Honestly Speaking there isn't really much in terms of story.. You simply progress through zones whilst freeing woodland creatures from becoming Badniks. Collecting all the chaos emeralds does give you a different ending but the changes in it are minimal. Essentially just making the Chaos Emeralds over glorified fertilizer. One aspect I do however give credit to Sonic the Hedgehog for is that after defeating the final boss you have the decision of either letting Robotnik Escape, or you can get some slight revenge for animal kind and your woodland friends by jumping on him and slowly watching him crash off screen. It's a relatively small thing.. But it's still a nice little touch to how you want to end the game. Overall as a platformer it has about as much story as you expect. Especially if you compare it to other platformers of it's time.
Depth
There really isn't much depth to Sonic the Hedgehog at all sadly. Granted it was the first game of many to come. But besides the Chaos Emeralds the game doesn't really have much depth at all. The game itself only has 6 different stages and a final boss.  So it really doesn't take long to complete at all. I will state that it will be more difficult than the later 2 games to complete however. Mainly due to hazards being more prominent and the levels seem to last longer as well. Besides getting a slightly different ending when collecting the chaos emerald.. There's really no "bonus" features either.. It's just a basic solid game.
Difficulty
I would say that Sonic The Hedgehog one is actually pretty hard compared to it's later Genesis counterparts. Especially when you consider that it has potentially one of the most disliked/hardest zones out of the 3 games. Labyrinth Zone. Beside this though most of the stages are pretty simple and easy. Though it does get pretty challenging towards the final stages of the game. Another thing that might throw people off if they are used to playing the later games is that Sonic the Hedgehog 1 is certainly more based around obstacles and traps. The game is more about precision platforming and less about speed than the later 2 releases.. It also has something known as the "spike glitch" Where if you land on spikes.. You don't get a invincibility frames so if you land on them again you will usually lose a life. This was fixed in later versions.. But it can still prove annoying if you accidentally land on spikes... Also the chaos Emeralds are harder to collect as there isn't as many opportunities to get them as the later games. Though the special stages themselves I would say are easier than Sonic 2's but harder than Sonic 3's. Overall it's a pretty moderate game in terms of difficulty.
Overall
This was a solid starting point for the Sonic Franchise. It may not be as entertaining as the later games. But it is still very solid and will still provide entertainment to those who are looking for a bit of nostalgia or to see where Sonic actually started from.. I think the fact that the game is very short and has no multiplayer hinders the game a bit in terms of longevity and replayability, But besides that there is really nothing inherently wrong with the game. It does what it does well. So I would happily suggest this game to people looking for a classic platformer to play..
Finally for the love of god DO NOT PLAY THE GAMEBOY ADVANCE PORT.. IT IS THE WORST VERSION OF A SONIC GAME EVER!

Sonic the Hedgehog review   G@mehe@d
Sonic the Hedgehog, was released on June 23, 1991 for the Sega Genesis/ Mega Drive. The game has sold 15 million copies making it the best selling Genesis game, and Sonic game. Let's take a look through this awesome game.
The story isn't big, but it's better than some of the new Sonic games. It all starts on South Island, a peaceful island that is home to many happy animals. One day, Dr. Ivo, Robotnik. Invades South Island and traps the innocent animals into robots. That's not the only thing he's doing, he is also searching for the chaos emeralds which are powerful gems. Only one cool dude can stop this demented scientist (as so said in the manual) his name is Sonic the Hedgehog. A fast blue hedgehog with an attitude. So your goal is to defeat Robotnik, retrieve the chaos emeralds, and return peace on the island.
The graphics are great, the parallax scrolling for the backgrounds creates a more realistic and defined background. The sprites look smooth and not too pix-elated, and the colors are vibrant. If I compared this game to Sonic 2 or 3. Sonic 2 and 3 would look better, but for a title released in 1991, it looks great. So I will give the graphics a 9.
The sound is great too. Music that sounds good and doesn't annoy you till you go crazy. Sound effects that are tuned, just right. The Game Gear and Master System version have EXTREMELY high pitched sound effects. All this good sound comes from a Yamaha YM2612  sound chip. (Sound rating 8).
Sonic the Hedgehog is very addicting. I played it all summer, even when I got all the chaos emeralds and beat the game. That just shows how addicting it is. (Addictiveness 9).
The game, really doesn't have much to offer. 6 zones with 3 acts, plus the final stage, there is also the rotating special stages nothing else really. ( Depth rating 6).
Sonic 1 isn't very hard, maybe the first couple of times you play. After that you'll start to beat the levels quickly and easily. (Difficulty rating 6)
Overall 9.2

Our quick blue hero's very first adventure, Now reviewed by yours truely, RedHotToddy.   RedHotToddy
In the world of video games, we have these guys called mascots, These are the guys who are the main stars of the video games themselves and in 1991 my mind was blown away when I saw the commercial for this very game right here, The commercial featured this spiky blue hedgehog who can run really and I say REALLY REALLY quick, the game went on to sell millions and millions, and who is this mysterious hero you ask? Well this guy is Sonic the hedgehog! Sonic has been around for a long time, and he has became very popular, so let's review the first game of this amazing SPEEDY legacy! This is Sonic the hedgehog for the Sega genesis.
Story-7/10
One day in the bright sunny hills of green hill zone, There lives a speedy and fun loving hedgehog by the name of sonic, This guy is like no other! He is cool, hip, and super fast! It is mainly because these red shoes he wears, (We all wish we could have his shoes) But anyways, one very day, An evil scientist by the name of Dr robotnik is causing havoc in sonic's world! What is he up to this time? Well guys, he is turning all of the creatures of the forest into robotic animals to do his bidding! It is now up to our friendly and heroic hedgehog friend sonic restore order to the world!
Gameplay-9/10
For the most part, Sonic the hedgehog is a 2D platformer, and a very high flying and radical one at that! In this adventure, you will take the role of our speedy and spiky protagonist Sonic, as you blaze through 6 dangerous, challenging, and big levels. Along the way, he will have to take out Dr robotnik's baddies! The controls are pretty simple, You use the D-pad to move, and all buttons will let you jump! Each world consists of 3 levels, 2 levels being main platform stages, and the 3rd being a boss fight with Dr robotnik, He is pretty tough! So be careful! Another thing, sonic will have to collect these rings in order to survive his quest, if he is hit, All of this rings are sent scattering through the level until you pick them back up, Collecting 100 of them will earn you an extra life, Having saved at least 50 rings by the end of the stage will you let play a special bonus game, here you are in a big spinning circle zone trying to get the chaos emeralds, and collecting rings to earn extra lives and continues. Now the main kicker of this game is especially the "Blast processing" as explained in the commercials, What they mean is all the super speed that sonic has in order to get through the worlds, This is easily one thing that made me buy this game let alone seeing it! The enemies in the game are all in all pretty simple to say the least, they are all of sonic's animal friends but just turned into robots by robotnik, they consist of snakes, worms, birds, fish, and so on. Sonic will be collecting tons of stuff in his quest, and those things include ring boxes which will give you more rings, sonic boxes which will give you an extra live, shield boxes which will give you a shield for protection, and so on. Anyways, that is pretty much it for the gameplay!
Graphics-9/10
The graphics in this game are absolutely amazing especially to this day guys, The genesis is a 32-bit console, So since this was one of the first games for the system, You can see they were trying to push the console to it's limits! I mean seriously, the graphics are nice, cartoony, and really make you feel that you are in sonic's big humble universe. All the worlds you will be blazing through are big, vast, dangerous, and just a blast to explore, You will blaze through temples, construction yards, robot factories, underwater labyrinths, and so on! Now as for the characters they are pretty cool and awesome as well! This was way before everyone else came in, So all we got was Sonic the super fast and blue hedgehog, and Dr robotnik, the evil scientist bent on world domination. The HUD is pretty self explanatory, it displays your game score, your amount of rings left, your remaining count of extra lives until game over, and well that is pretty much it!
Sound-9/10
This is without a doubt some of THE catchiest music I have EVER heard in a retro video game, well no duh! The game was released on a 32-bit console! But anyways, sonic games are known for insanely catchy music and sound effects and whatnot, and this is really no exception! Each level has really really catchy and upbeat music which helps you prepare for each level after the last, and that is a plus! Now as for the sound effects, they are pretty good to say the least! You get boings, booms, sproings, and well, yeah! The sound effects have been in my head for years to come, and today...THEY STILL ARE! Sonic games should always have an awesome soundtrack, and this is no exception!
Addictiveness-9/10
You best believe it when I say this game is heaps of fun! The first day I got this one, I just couldn't put it down! I mean seriously, the high powered graphics, the 32-bit sound, It is really music to my ears! And it is pretty fun trying to recover all the chaos emeralds, I mean, I have done it a couple of times, And It wasn't easy guys!
Depth-8/10
My my my does this game offer a heap of stuff to do! Well to start off, the adventure is over 6 worlds long, so it will most likely take you 1-2 hours to beat it all, and there are also the 6 chaos emeralds to collect, so that will have you coming back, But when you do get them all, you just get a different ending, and the ending is pretty cool to be honest!
Difficulty-7/10
For the very very first game in the series, this was a pretty darn challenging game to be honest! I mean, I could never get past that darn labyrinth zone for a long time! I mean, who thought that level would be a good idea?!?! Who did? But anyways, the game is made by Sega, so of course It is SUPPOSED to be challenging, I mean, that is the reason I play most games like this! To be challenged, and to have fun! We all love you sonic!
Overall-9.6/10
This game is just about the reason for everything, It is the reason to buy a Sega genesis, It is the reason why Sega exists, It is the reason why we love video games, it is the Rea- Oh well, you guys get the point! This is such an amazing game and I think all of you guys here on vizzed board need to play it! I gave this game a 9.6 because it is fun, challenging, cute, and just about everything else! Just buy this game now! You won't regret it! So anyways, this has been RedHotToddy's 110th review, and well, see you guys later in my very next review!

A game that gave Mario a run for its money (literally)   NinjaX
Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the first games I've ever played (the very first on the classical Sega Genesis) and this game was responsible for my love of video games in general.
Graphics: To this day, the sprites and backgrounds are still legit. They are so colorful and pleasing to the eye, even though the graphics are only 16-bits. Why is it that the old 2D games look more awesome than today's 3D games I wonder? This version is way superior to the 8-bit version on the Master System. 10/10
Story: A fast-running, blue hedgehog, with a love for adventure, tries to stop the evil Dr. Robotnik from taking over the world. An always running formula, but still in good hands. On a side note, I always thought that Dr. Robotnik (aka Dr. Eggman) was very similar to Dr. Willy from the Megaman series due to their motives and use for machines. 10/10
Sound: The sounds in this game is some of the best I've ever heard, just hearing the explosions when I hit the robot enemies is just plain awesome and persuades me to do some more damage to these bags of bolts. The sounds are notably louder and more fluid than earlier games on the Genesis, which makes the sounds even more exciting. 10/10
Difficulty: The first zone was actually pretty easy to accomplish, but after that is when it gets you. The last parts of the game were a pain, I can't remember exactly how many times that I have to start all over again due to me dying, but I can say that it was a lot. The main difficult task in the game is to collect all 6 Chaos Emeralds, basically a player has to collect 50+ rings towards the end of a level, at the goal the player can enter a large ring at the top right corner of the screen, once he/she does, the player enters a special stage, which allows you to collect an Emerald. I've gotten the 1st Emerald no problem, but getting the other 5 was really frustrating, it took me many tries to collect even 1 of those 5. 9/10
Depth: The game has the challenge of collecting all 6 Chaos Emeralds, which leads to an alt. ending. There are 6 zones in the game, along with a special zone and a final zone, each have 3 acts to play (except for the latter two, only has one act). One could argue that the game is shorter than it seems due to the amazing speed of the game play, but it took me at least 2 days to finish (4 hours without the Emeralds and 44 more hours with all the Emeralds). In my opinion, it depends on how skilled a gamer is, I'm not very skilled, but I am a good strategist, very patient, and a fast learner, without these attributes it would've taken me a lot longer to complete this game because this game requires all 3 of those, trust me. 8/10
Music: One of the most recognizable pieces of music I've ever heard. I remember each track by heart. I remember the first time I heard the main title theme in the game, I first turned on the Genesis (which was new to me at the time) with the Sonic cartridge in it, I heard the "SEGA" voice and I was like, "Oh, this is going to be fun," then the title screen appeared, just hearing the tune and seeing Sonic waving his finger at me has gotten me addicted to this game non-stop and I just listen to the soundtrack all day long that day, it was awesome. 10/10
Addictiveness: This game was all I would play when I had it, I was balling out when the game (and the Genesis as a whole) was sold. This addictiveness existed mainly because of its fast-paced game play and the memorable music and sounds, I just played that game non-stop because of these 3 things. 9/10
Final thoughts: I remember this game like the palm of my hand because of how memorable and fun this game was. Ever since then I became a HUGE fan of the Sonic series, becoming more so than Mario I actually am, which is quite the accomplishment, and this game was the stamp of my fan-hood. I love speed in video games because speed makes everything more spectacular and awesome, so what better to play a game with speed than to play as "The World's Most Famous and Fastest Hedgehog".

Blast away at super sonic speed!   Dante0
Alright FINALLY! I can finally edit this review so it doesn't suck (well not as much at least.) I wrote a review on this game quite a while ago, it was almost around a year ago, and well needless to say after I finished it I hated it. It was too long, too spammy, and it just wasn't fun to read. However I can finally fix that now that I finally have time, I doubt ANYBODY cares, but I do, as I want my reviews to be fun, informative, but serious enough so that people who have played the game can enjoy reading my opinion, as well as people who haven't played the game to play it/not playing it. Enough of this! Time to review Sonic the Hedgehog. So lets do a little backround check on this little blue rascal.
Sonic the Hedgehog, is a platformer (HERP DERP ya don't say?) that is much different from Mario. You see Mario's gameplay was more slow, linear, and well...slow. When Sonic came out he was an instant hit, he was blue, cool, fast, cool, had cool sneakers, cool, fast (you get the idea) so much so that Sonic became Mario's RIVAL. Yes you heard me right Sonic rivaled gaming's biggest icon....that's quite impressive Sega. Oh yeah Sega published the game and Sonic Team developed it. But I'm sure you've heard this all before everyone knows this story and if ya haven't its on the inerwebzz so check it out there (fun fact, Sonic Team/Sega actually had a very difficult time trying to find a good mascot to represent their game. They tried a fox, rabbit, pretty much all animals seeing which one would fit best. Heck Dr. Robotnik, the villain for this game was going to be the protagonist. He was going to be a kid in pajamas running around grassy hills I guess.) So without further ado, lets see what the blue blur's first game is like.
Graphics: 9/10 Yes everyone knows it, this game looks gorgeous! Sonic and friends (or enemies) animate very well and the locations themselves are varied and very well made. You've got six zones including Green Hill Zone, Marble Zone, Spring Yard Zone, Labyrinth Zone, Star Light Zone and Scrap Brain Zone. Ech of these have three levels, two being normal levels, and the 3rd being a boss battle against Robotnik. Each of these zones have their own distinct and level gimmicks, I like these zones...except Marble and Labyrinth zone, I hate these two, and if you have played this game then you know why. You can really feel the sense of speed as you blaze through these levels, and it all looks great. There are lots of enemies and they are all varied and nicely designed and so is Sonic. The graphics were highly praised when this game came out in 1991 and with good reason as they still look great today.
Sound: 8/10 The music for this game is quite iconic to say the least, it is also quite awesome to say the least. Come on show me one person who doesn't know the Green Hill Zone tune (I can play it on guitar. :D) The rest of the music is great too, I really like Star Light Zone's music. Then you got the classic sounds like Sonic jumping and bopping enemies on the head and stuff, it all sounds good and the music is going to be in your head for a while after playing.
Addictiveness: 6/10 Meh honestly once you get all the Chaos Emeralds (which I will go into later) and played through the game 2 times, the game just kinda gets boring. However beware as this game is not going to be what you expect it to be, it IS a platformer and you can't just run around as fast as you want without getting hit a lot. That's what a lot of people think going into this game when in fact especially Marble Zone and Labyrinth it can be quite slow, lots of waiting around for platforms to move and going slowly through the levels to learn them, this isn't as fast paced as some people going in expect. Now that isn't a bad thing but for your first playhrough this game can be extremely frustrating, you see, the camera is zoomed in quite a bit to our hero and it can be a bit hard to know whats coming up until you learn the levels making speed a reward. That isn't a bad thing but once again it can make for a extremely frustrating first playthrough of the game, there is lots of trial and error making this game much more fun on your second playthrough, learn the levels and just beat the game on your first playthrough and then on your second blaze through the stages at super sonic speed! Collecting the Chaos Emeralds as you go! I will go into those later but they are not exactly worth collecting in my opinion.
Story: 5/10 Typical for a SG game. The just of it is that an evil scientist named Dr. Robotnik has turned all of Sonic's friends into robots, and has stolen the 6 Chaos Emeralds (yes you read that right 6 not 7) for his own evil deeds and it is up to Sonic to stop him. Now more on the Chaos Emeralds. At the end of every level (except the 3rd level the boss level) if you have 50 rings (rings are Sonic's health, pick them up in the levels and as long as you have at least one you can survive a hit and collecting 100 gets you a 1-up) then a giant ring appears, jump into it and you start a special stage. A special stage has Sonic rotating a maze like thingy majig. Collect the Chaos Emerald at the end and you win. Collecting all the Chaos Emeralds DOES NOT give you access to Super Sonic, rather collecting them all gives you the good ending. Yes there are 2 endings, the good ending and the bad ending. Now again in my opinion collecting all of the Chaos Emeralds and getting the good ending is not worth it. The endings are not that different and you should only go after them if you REALLY want to see the good ending.
Depth: 7/10 So as Sonic you can do the basic things you'd expect to be able to do. Sonic can move/run, jump, crouch, and if pick up speed while running pressing down will have Sonic roll in a ball, no there is no spindash in this game. The levels are quite big with lots of secrets and alternate pathways. It isn't really worth exploring though unless you wanna try to find the fastest possible route to the exit or got hit and are scouring the stage for 50 more rings in hopes to access the special stage, or are looking for the various powerups, there are 5 in all, the shield, the power sneakers, the super ring, the invincibility, and the 1-up. The shield lets Sonic take a hit without losing any rings, the power sneakers makes him extra fast although I like to avoid these whenever possible as it makes platforming much more difficult, the super ring which just gives Sonic 10 rings at a time, the invincibility just let sonic be invincible for a short amount of time, and the 1-up which is self explanatory. Then the two endings which I already talked about, the Chaos Emeralds and there's the boss battles. These are extremely easy (except the Labyrinth Zone boss seriously SCREW THAT GUY!) Overall there is a decent amount here and speedrunners will definitely have a great time with this game.
Difficulty: 7/10 The game is only hard on your first playthrough cause again once you learn the levels they are not that difficult and are quite fun. The boss battles are easy for the most part and collecting the Chaos Emeralds while it can be annoying shouldn't make you tear your hair out in frustration. Sonic controls very nicely and there were only a few times where Sonic's jump can feel a bit stiff. There isn't much more to say about this so I'll just leave it at that.
To rap things up: Overall Sonic's first adventure holds up well and I would say is worht playing although his future installments are better so unless you REALLY want to start from his roots you should probably just go play Sonic 2 or Sonic 3 although it does hold up on its own. Also I know quite a while ago I said I was going to do all three Sonic games but alas I'm not going to, why? Cause I don't really feel like it anymore (deal with it!) I think there are some other games that I should review..games that are not that well known, ya know hidden gems. So for the next few reviews I'm going to be looking at hidden gems. If you guys have any requests on what you would like me to review then please pm or comment on my profile or however you would like to get a hold of me. If you have any suggestions on how I can make my reviews better then by all means speak up. So anyways back to Sonic. Now don't worry if you missed this game on the Genesis because it is everywhere, it is in several collections, virtual console, the gba (DON'T play that version) and pretty much everywhere else, it isn't hard to find. So I would recommend this if you are a fan of platformers or just want to see Sonic's first adventure as it is worth playing through, just put up with a little frustration on the way. Well that's it for this review guys I'm not sure what I'm going to review next but like I said I will be doing what I personally consider to be hidden gems and I will be doing probably 2 or 3 that I think deserve reviews the most. Anyways that is all for this review I hope you enjoyed, have a great day, and I will see you all later! See ya!

Sonic makes the leap in the 16-bits world   janus
Like his buddies (arch enemies?) on Nintendo, Sonic was bound to make the jump to his respective 16-bits console. He did it in Sonic the Hedgehog 1, a mighty fine game for its time. I admit that my review will be a little biaised since I played the game AFTER Sonic 2, which was technically superior.
Graphic: 8/10
Everything in this game is nice and colorful. The creators made a lot of effort to make sure that Sonic himself looked good. His design is a significant improvement from the Sega Master System - a more dramatic change than Mario from Super Mario Bros. 3 to Super Mario World. His color is finer, his measurements have improved and his movements are more fluid. Thanks to the improved processor on the Sega Genesis, he is able to go fast... sometimes too fast in the Star Light Zone loops or the Green Hill tunnels.
All the zones are nicely detailed and very appropriate for the name. Green Hill Zone is very green with many trees and even some waterfalls around. Marble Zone has marble columns in the background that seems to resist the intense heat from the lava. Spring Yard, while not having more springs than other zones, has a nice carnival-like background with shiny colors - you can even stand on neon-like structures or bounce on starry spheres. Labyrinth Zone, while underwater, does have a few complicated turns (and underwater, Sonic moves realistically slower) and has some nice rocky backgrounds with some carving. Star Light Zone had the least interesting design with a very dark and monochromatic black background, although where Sonic stands was well-done. Finally, Scrap Brain Zone had a very industrial ambiance with its plants in the background and the machinery Sonic has to go around.
Enemies are also well-drawn and far more numerous than in previous games (and even future games on the Game Gear). Many are in plain sight and are easy to destroy, while some have spikes and can only be destroyed by rolling on them. In Labyrinth Zone in particular some will even jump out of nowhere and surprise you - and unlike the wrench throwers in Mario 3 you can't really see them coming. Their movement is impressively fluid for the time, notably the mechanical pirhanas jumping up and down in Green Hill and the bats flying in Marble Zone.
Robotnik comes with more elaborate designs too. Be it with a ball and chain, by setting ablaze the ground, by throwing mines at you or by getting in a piston to squash you, he will make sure you don't free your imprisoned friends that easily (those are also very nicely-drawn, although they are a little small).
Finally, unlike previous games you will have to get your emeralds in a Special Stage, accessible only if you have at least 50 rings at the end of a non-boss zone (zones 1 and 2, except from Scrap Brain Zone 2) and jump inside the giant gold ring waiting for you. You will need to find your way in increasingly difficult mazes that spin around (you can hit disks that increase/decrease speed or reverse the sense of the rotation). You can get a continue (a chance to keep your game at the present zone if you die) if you get at least 50 rings. The stage stops if you get the emerald or if you hit a "stop" disk.
Music: 8/10
Music in Sonic 1 was also very good. It mostly felt appropriate for the situation.
Green Hill (the same as the Master System!) feels magical and peaceful while Marble Zone feels more intriguing with its ancient marble temples. Spring Yard feels more festive, Labyrinth's synth is a little too heavy but still enjoyable, Star Light is magical and "light" and Scrap Brain sounds dramatic and very industrial. Robotnik's theme sounds better in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, but his form in Final Zone sounds dramatic and epic.
Caveat: The end "mix" with all the zone tracks together didn't sound so good. It didn't flow properly like the following two games and the musicians had to add too much drum to stick it together.
Sound effects were well-done too. His leap sounds better than on the 8-bits machines, the rings have a better "money sound" than the Mario games - as does the sound when he loses them - and the springs sound really "bouncy". And since he's a real mammal, Sonic can drown; when he does you can hear his last breath of life coming out of him. The countdown effect sounds terribly dramatic, and it can be alleviated by inspiring air bubble generators that are fortunately easy to find.
Other caveat: the invincibility theme could have used more work (it was improved in Sonic 2). It's inspired from the intro theme but the intro drum cuts it much too dryly to be enjoyable. But the Special Stage's dreamy music was a good match for its psychedelic background.
Addictiveness: 7/10
Because I played Sonic 1 AFTER Sonic 2 I thought the game wasn't as good.
First, while Sonic does go at high speeds, he only does so once he has enough momentum when he goes downhill on in a loop. I though he was just too slow, unless he gets a rare speed shoes box thank makes him go faster (and the music too!)
Nevertheless all zones have plenty to explore. Of course you will want to tread around carefully if you want to have your 50 rings and get a shot at acquiring the emerald. Thankfully you can get a shield that protects him from one hit of the enemy. And when he's without protection he simply loses his rings. That feature made the game more interesting since you wouldn't die right away as long as you have at least one ring. Unfortunately, that can sometimes be futile if the spiky area you hit is too large - his flashing recovery rate is rather short.
If you can time your jumps appropriately (just like Mario) you will be able to reach higher areas that contain many rings, but maybe also an invincibility box, or even a life box (although these are extremely rare).
Finally with the classic menu selection code (up, down left, right, a+b+c+start) you can even choose which stage you can start from and hear the complete sound test. THAT is a big plus for video game music geeks like myself. And you will thank your exploring skills inside the Special Stage that gets you continues, which increases playability.
Oh, and you of course want as many points as possible; the more quickly you end a zone the larger your bonus.
Story: 3/10
Like many platform games, there isn't really a story. You just go through 3 zones for each level, fight a boss and free your animal friends. The emeralds you collect, unlike following games, are just for show to make Robotnik enraged at the end of the game.
Nevertheless, there was a clever link made between the end of Scrap Brain 2 and 3. You could have fought Robotnik's final form right there but he presses a switch that drops you to Scrap Brain 3. At the end of
that zone, the springs at the end bring you back you should have been and into the Final Zone.
Depth: 8/10
The levels are much bigger and offer much more to explore than on the Master System.
For starters the road isn't quite as linear. There are many occasion when you can go higher up (or lower down) and explore some more... or fall into a trap. Fortunately it's compensate by numerous lampposts throughout each zones; you will restart there should you die.
In fact the zones seem to get larger as the levels progress. Scrap Brain takes more time to complete than Green Hill or Marble Zone. They also become more difficult (see difficulty section) so be patient.
Finally, the fact that you need to keep your rings to access the special stages and get the emeralds will take a lot of brain power in order to avoid all the obstacles, including ball and chains (without the chain) moving up and down... on hills.
Difficulty: 7/10
While easier than the 8-bits games, Sonic 1 is still quite a challenge.
First, getting the right momentum without the spin dash can be very difficult at times and frustrating. You just can't get the right speed, blast it!
Second, as I said earlier the levels get increasingly difficult. Labyrinth Zone is mostly underwater and you can drown easily. When exploring you may forget that fact and forget to look for oxygen generators. And since your movements are slower you may find yourself hitting the enemy in the wrong spot and die.
Star Light Zone can be managed by there are many holes, and the bomb fragments can easily hit you, especially when they come in large groups. Finally Scrap Brain has many bottomless pits, lots of lava that is harder to avoid than in Marble Zone and you can get squeezed easily by the heavy machinery in Act 2. Oh and Act 3 happens underwater too.
But to compensate all of that, the final boss is ridiculously easy - the easiest on the 16 bits consoles. While yes, you can get squished, all you need to do is stand on the side that leaves you the most space and just wait for the appropriate piston to come down. Of course you also need to avoid those static electricity ball, but that's nothing you can't do. Just don't touch them as you can't get any rings.
In short I recommend Sonic 1 to all Sega and platform game lovers. The game is colorful with detailed graphics, the music is enjoyable, the sound effects are well-done and there is plenty to explore. Plus you will, in many occasions, need to use your brain in order to make your way through.

This Put Sega On The Map   tyranit
Hey guys, Tyranit here with a review of the original Sonic the Hedgehog. This game was created to go against Mario and Nintendo in a rivalry that defined the 90's, and a rivalry that Sega had the lead in at one point, but that is another story for another day. Sonic is fast, fluid, and really defines the 90's attitude that we all came to know and love. Anyway, onto the review.
Graphics - 7
The graphics of Sonic 1 were awesome for back then, as Sega had a leading 16-bit console, the Genesis, before Nintendo had the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The colors were vibrant, and still looking appealing today. The sprite of Sonic is animated well as he runs through loops and jumps on badniks. The only bad graphical problem I have seen are the seizure inducing special stage with all of the flashing lights and colors in the background.
Sound - 9
The music and sound effects of Sonic 1 are timeless, such as the notable Green Hill Zone being recognizable all over the world, and the ring collecting sound effect that you sometimes even hear at a gas station when they open the cash register (at least where I live they do that). Marble Zone's music is decent, but the level is bland, making it not as memorable. Spring Yard Zone had a good track that became to the precursor to the other Casino type levels in the Sonic universe. Labyrinth Zone is my least favorite track, but that is probably because I had to listen to it over and over again as I died from drowning in that irritating level. Star Light Zone, on the other hand, is one of my favorite tracks in the game, as it feels like I am getting back into the groove after good runs of Green Hill and Spring Yard. Scrap Brain is surprisingly bland to me for a final zone, but the actual Final Zone, being just a boss fight against Robotnik, is one of my favorite Final Boss themes ever. The boss fight music is the worst of the classic series to me, but is still good nonetheless.
Addictiveness - 8
Sonic 1 is pretty darn addictive, as it is a short game to kill time, but also fun to do time trials of your favorite levels to see how fast you can get through them, as I can get through Green Hill Act 1 in 28 Seconds. I love also using the level select code to get to Star Light Zone to have some fun going through the split pathways.
Depth - 5
Sonic 1 was pretty big back in 1991 with 19 decently sized levels, but pales in comparison of sequels like Sonic 2, or 3 & Knuckles. The 6 Special Stages give an extra point in this category, but are all short and easily beatable by the midpoint of the game.
Story - 3
Classic Sonic games never focused on story, that is Modern Sonic's job, but it had a decent story for games up to 1991 *SPOILERS* (If you can count a 25 year old game "Spoilers" anymore). Dr. Robotnik kidnaps animals, turns them into robots called "badniks", steals the 6 Chaos Emeralds, and tries to take over the world to create a theme park named Robotnik Land. Most of the light hearted games have this type of story, with a few twists and turns, but the core remains the same.
Difficulty - 6
LABYRINTH ZONE, HOW I HATE YOU!! I would give this a 4 if Labyrinth Zone didn't exist, as Sonic 1 feels like a leisurely stroll in the park, picking up to a jog, instantly going to the difficult sprint in Labyrinth Zone, slowing down to a moderate run by Final Zone.
Overall - 7
Overall, I give Sonic the Hedgehog a 7 out of 10 because the game play and sound are great, and I cut Sonic 1 some slack for being a retro game in terms of story and depth. I love this game, but not as much as later game like Sonic 2, CD, and 3 and Knuckles. Anyway, this has been my review of Sonic 1, hope you enjoyed reading!

Sonic the Hedgehog   Crazylad
Sonic 1 is an awesome game, from speeding around Green Hill Zone to drowning in Labyrinth hell, it's the best game SEGA decided to make. I ,personally, enjoy the game and constantly play it on Vizzed. I have also tried to beat the record in Green Hill Zone, but I'm not that good.
Graphics {8}
They may not be too good on the system, with the sequels improving the graphics, but they were still great for the system back then. Everything was colored to exact color, no messing about with the colors, making it look stupid. Sonic's sprites were good, slightly changed in 2 and greatly changed in 3. In this game, he was a grayish-blue color with big black eyes. The trees, plants and flowers in Green Hill were great, making the place look alive with their movements. The backgrounds were good, with the background moving smoothly, similar to a backdrop in real life. Labyrinth Zone looks like an underground ruin, with vines hanging about and traps waiting to catch Sonic. Starlight is like a highway level with lights, buildings in the background, some still in construction. Overall the graphics were at the best for the game's time.
Sound {7}
Sound was interesting, with jumping sounds that sounded like a cartoon, to spins that sounded like a machine. The sound was addictive, with music that would interest you and sounds. Hitting badniks made a POOF, so did item boxes and the capsule at the end of the first five zones. Eggman also had some POOFs when you defeated him. All in all, Sound is great in this game, yet there is not much to go over here.
Addictiveness {8}
This game will make you want to play over and over again. With fun zones, goals, lives, secrets and chaos emeralds to be found. Also you may try to race your friends to see who is the fastest thing alive in Sonic 1. The game is also long, so you will play on and on, trying to foil Dr. Robotnik for the first time. Although, unlike the sequels, the game isn't that much fun after the first play-through. It can get boring after a long time, due to the repetitiveness of the game, also how linear it is. But it was way more addictive back then, than it is now.
Story {7}
The story is good, a hedgehog finds that an evil scientist has captured all the animals. He has turned them into badniks, now Sonic must rescue the animals, find the mysterious chaos emeralds and defeat the evil scientist. There are two endings, which make you replay to see the other. The story still could be expanded upon, with events happening as the game progresses, but nobody cared back then.
Depth {7}
The game is fairly long, with three acts in six zones, plus a final zone. But the sequel had expanded upon so much, making this game seem like baby steps. It was baby steps. They were trying to make a simple, awesome debut game for their new mascot. The game has a lot to do, such as complete the game, finish all special stages, find secrets and more. But it's still shorter than it's sequel and the third game in it's
complete form. Despite this, many people still enjoy this classic. At least it's easier to finish the game!
Difficulty {5}
This game is not that hard if you think about it. It may and will be hard for the new player, but it gets fairly easier the more you play. Some people may not be used to the style of gameplay Sonic has. Speeding about in a long level, doing puzzles, collecting rings to increase your health. It's still easy when compared to Sonic 2 and 3, but some may disagree, I'm ok with that, as long as we all know how they are slightly harder/easier than each other. Sonic 1 is a fair game, no unfair jumps, puzzles or hazards.
Overall {7}
Overall, this game is a great game. I recommend you to play it, you'll have great fun. I have played it lots of times, as I've said before. It's great to play this game, it's one of the golden games of the system. If you really enjoyed Sonic 2 and/or 3&K, I recommend you to play this game. The classics are mostly the best, the sequels are the ones that improve. This my review for this awesome game. I hope you have as much fun as I did, you may want to share your opinion on it like me! Come on, I know you want to hit that play game button!

Sonic the hedgehog review by 98Gamingstar   98Gamingstar
This game is one of my favourite retro games of all time. I always seem to end up completing it even if I want to quit halfway through. This game has many hacks. Some of which are very good. Anyway enough about the hacks for this game and myself. This is going to be quite a big review so enjoy.
-Graphics-
The graphics in this game are roughly around normal for a genesis game. There is not  really a point in this game where I go ' Oh wow look, that sprite / piece / other, looks good. I generally accept that the graphics could not be that good but still, maybe SEGA could have polished them up a bit. Aside from that the sprites look ok I guess. Same with the sprites for most stuff really. The water and lava look ok with a bit of room for improvement.
-Sound-
The sound in this game is really good for the genesis. There are lots of tracks in this game that I like. This just proves that sometimes musical pieces can sound and be the best. I guess other games may have better sound but you know. Anyway, the music fits with the levels very nicely and I am very impressed by the way everything sounds. SEGA certainly love their music and this game shows it VERY well
-Addictiveness-
This game is very addicting, once you start you wont stop. Time goes quickly when playing this. However, this game is quite short but once your onto a level you feel the need to complete that level. Its like it gives you a disease that makes you NEED to complete the game.
-Story-
From what you play in the game there appears to be no story however, if you have played the game enough you will know there is  a story.
Basically this fat scientist called Doctor Robotnik wants to capture all the animals all something and Sonic ends up saving the day. Basically your playing as the main hero and your trying to stop the bad guy like in all games / cartoons / anime / manga. The story is not to detailed or anything and I would have liked to see some cut scenes or something.
-Depth-
The game does not have much depth. The game is not that big and might take you a few hours at the most to complete it. Maybe some more stages and maybe a save feature would have been nice. Also there is not really much that it offers. It offers quite a few stuff but not enough to keep me wanting to play it forever.
-Difficulty-
This game is not very hard at all. However, if your playing it for the first time there can be places / zones that you find hard. But if you keep playing it you will find them EASY!!!!!
Ok so this is my review on Sonic The Hedgehog. I hope you liked reading it! More reviews are coming soon

Sonic the Hedgehog was one of the first games I played it is a really good game and I'd recommend it to the people who haven't played it yet.
GRAPHICS
The graphics on the game are excellent 2D sonic games are my favorite type of Sonic graphics.
DEPTH
The game has a lot to offer with 3 acts in one zone so the game is pretty big for players that want to spend some time playing a game.
ADDICTIVENESS
The game can be addictive at times because of it's classical game play.
DIFFICULTY
The difficulty in this game isn't really difficult in my opinion but there are some special stages that I find complicated.
OVERALL
Overall I thought the game was enjoyable and fun and I would like to play more Sonic games like this.

story 5 / 10
yeah it is a five because there is no story only some different levels that are not related to each other! but it was nice and amusing to play the different levels and different areas with many beautiful and hard levels
depth 9 / 10

Sonic the Hedgehog Review   dazzsheil
Back in 1991, Mario was all the rage. Until one fateful day in the fall of that year. SEGA's Mega Drive was still trying to find it's feet in the gaming world and to get sales boosting, they decided to replace their mascot-Alex Kidd- with something "cool" and "hip" to compete with Nintendo's portly plumber. After several ideas( Like a rabbit, a mouse, and Theodore Roosevelt wearing pyjamas) SEGA ended up with Sonic the Hedgehog, one of the most refreshing games to come out in the early 1990's. It's speed was unparalleled and it's graphics were unlike anything anybody was used to at the time. It is the best selling SEGA Mega Drive game, selling 15 million units worldwide.
The Graphics
Sonic's graphics are very crisp, bright and detailed using the Mega Drive to it's fullest capabilities. The parallax scrolling and of course the old "Blast Processing" is what made Sonic's speed a true sight to behold. It is quite possibly the best looking game on the system.
The Sound
The sound in this game will blow you away. After listening to some of these tunes you will never ever stop humming or whistling them, they are just so damn catchy. I'm sure if you are a gamer you have heard Green Hill Zone before, or the games title theme or the infamous drowning theme, which has to be one of the scariest songs in gaming.
Addictiveness
With it being a 2D platformer, there's not a whole lot to do when you're done, except beating the High Score.
The Story
It's a typical evil guy enslaving something to take over the world story and it's up to the hero to stop him. Cliché: yes. Does it work for Sonic: Yes.
Depth
Plenty of alternate paths, 2 endings and High Scores. Sonic will probably last a while. It is certainly not the deepest game ever, but it certainly is not the most shallow game of all time, that's for sure.
Difficulty
Not the hardest game of all time but still quite a challenging one nevertheless.

Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis   luigi25

Sonic the Hedgehog was released for the Sega Genesis in the summer of 1991. I never grew up with these games the same way in which I grew up with the Mario games. I got to play them some on a Genesis that a couple of other kids in my neighborhood had. However, this first Sonic game was rarely ever played by them. They mainly liked to play Sonic 2 and, later on, Sonic 3 on their Sega Genesis. This one was played but maybe only 2 or 3 times throughout 1992 and 93. It wasn't until about 5 years ago that I started playing it online on another gaming site called "Game Oldies.com".

The original Sonic the Hedgehog was the start of a whole new gaming franchise for me. I never had a Sega Genesis, but I did get to play Sonic 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog on Game Gear at my friends' house. When this game came out, the series hadn't done much. Later on, there would be cartoons I watched a lot of, but that wouldn't be until after Sonic 2. Sonic is a game franchise I loved as a kid, but the way I to experience it was a lot different from the classic Mario series.

Graphics 10/10: The Sega Genesis was a 16-bit home gaming console, and it produced games that were like none other at that time graphically. Sonic the Hedgehog is one of those games. The backgrounds were very well detailed and drawn out and so were the sprites. There is no doubt that all the Sonic games that were released on the Sega Genesis were very good looking games. Sonic 1 really looks just as good as Sonic 2. It may not look as good as the third game, but everything is still very animated. None of the Mario games around that time were this good graphically. There is so much crystal clear color to the levels as well, and everything looks so realistic!

Music 10/10: All of the music in Sonic 1 sounds great! There is not one track that sounds dull or boring. I know the other games were better, but all of them had this in common also. Green Hill Zone is my favorite, but then there is the music for the final battle with Eggman. In some ways, all of the tracks in this game sound amazing! A lot of people didn't like the theme for Labyrinth Zone, but I even liked that one too. There is so much variety to the soundtrack of this game, and all of it sounds fantastic. This was only the beginning of something that would carry on into the other games of the series.

Gameplay 10/10: The object of the game is to get through the levels as fast as you can. You have plenty of time to do so, but you have to avoid enemies, spikes, bottomless pits, etc. The player collects rings along the way, and if you collect 50 rings you get to play a bonus game at the end of the first 2 stages of each zone. In the bonus area, you can earn continues, extra lives, and if you are good enough a Chaos Emerald. Collecting these Emeralds aren't necessary for completing the game, but collecting all 6, I feel, is worth it if you want to get the good ending of the game.

You get faster at this game the more you play it, and that is what I like most about the gameplay. However, unlike with Super Mario Bros., you have 10 minutes to get through each level which is plenty of time for most levels. Although, it can be kind of rushed on some of the later ones. For me, Sonic can be quite challenging when trying to collect all the Chaos Emeralds and get 100%, and that's one of the things I like about it. I also love running through the level at such high speed and making Sonic spin through the loops and other parts of the game.

This game is designed in a way that discourages players from rushing through the levels until they get good at them. If you try to go real fast to start with, you'll find yourself back to the starting screen if you are not careful. Although, the sequels drove this gimmick home a lot more than this game, but Sonic 1 still had a lot of variety to the stages. The first area was a lush green mountainside with waterfalls, later on, you had an underwater cave called Labyrinth Zone, and the final Scrap Brain Zone where Dr. Robotnik lived. Sonic is a game where the player got to go fast but not until memorizing the layout of the levels. The Chaos Emeralds are also a nice extra feature, but first time players would want to go for the Special Stages anyway because that's where they could earn extra lives and continues.

I liked how enemies could be killed by simply jumping into them. This took some time for me to get used to, but once I did, I found this method better than the way you destroyed enemies in the Mario games. I also liked how Sonic could always take damage if he had rings. If you get hit by an enemy, you just lose your rings and have the chance to get them back and do it again. Most of the time, I usually died from drowning, falling into bottomless pits, and mainly getting crushed. I didn't like not being able to spin-dash and how Tails wasn't in this game. Those things would come along until a year later in Sonic 2, but this game is still a fun, fast-paced game with great-looking levels and great music that never gets old.

Story 6/10: The story of the first Sonic the Hedgehog game is one that is similar to Mario but with a few differences. It has a new villain named Dr. Ivo Robotnik who has kidnapped all of Sonic's animal friends and plans on turning them into robots. Some of them have already been turned into robots but are freed when Sonic destroys them along the way. The setting takes place in an area called South Island. That explains all the lush, green palm trees and flowers in this game. Sonic must travel through South Island in order to reach Robotnik's Scrap Brain Zone, defeat him and save the island and all his friends. This kind of reminds me of the plot in the first Mario game on NES.

It is a pretty basic plot that would get better in the later games. For this one, there isn't all that much to it. Sonic just sets out on a journey to defeat Dr. Robotnik and stop his plans of world domination. This was before the cartoons, and there aren't that many characters in this game. There is no Tails in this one, but you do have the Grounder enemies that show up in Labyrinth Zone that were in the afterschool cartoons I used to like most. The storyline is actually pretty flat for the first game: Sonic vs. Eggman.

Content 7/10: Sonic the Hedgehog on Sega Genesis takes a little under an hour to beat if you know what you are doing. It contains 6 zones: Green Hill, Marble Zone, Spring Yard, Labyrinth Zone, Star Light Zone, and the Scrap Brain Zone where Dr. Robotnik lives. These zones are spit up into 3 acts, and at the end of the third act is a boss fight with one of Robotnik's vehicles. This kind of another downside to the first game in the Sonic series. There isn't much content to it. It will keep you occupied for a while, and I guess the other games were like this also. It isn't a big deal, but this is where Mario won out over Sonic in the console wars of the early 90s.

Difficulty 6/10: The player starts out the game with only 3 lives, and there aren't many ways to earn extra lives in this game except for in the bonus stages. Here, you can extra lives and continues. What's even better is that you can continue from the level you last died on. Although, these continues do run out after a while, so you want to be careful not to die. The ring system also gives you unlimited hits, and like I already mentioned, getting hit by enemies rarely ever gets you killed. However, the danger of getting crushed is something you really have to watch out for in this game. I feel like as long as you know what you are doing you're okay and can blindly fly through the game.

It's like Sega wanted players to learn the layout of the game and get comfortable with it before they worried too much about speed. Sega also gave players plenty of time to complete these stages in the first game, so you could still take your time and learn the ropes. Trying to beat the clock would be a problem in later games, and those games would also include more stage hazards too where: you got crushed, fell into bottomless pits, drowned, and even ran out of time. This game is pretty tame compared to the later ones and has a difficulty that isn't easy but isn't all that hard either. In some ways, Sonic 2 and 3 aren't that hard either, but they are more difficult than this one.

Overall 8.6/10: When you look at certain aspects of this game such as: the graphics, music, and gameplay you have a really great game. Although, when you start to think about the lack of creativity in the storyline, and how the game (and the other Sonic games) doesn't have much to it when compared to the Mario games at the time, you have a game that is good but not great. This was still an early title, and Sega was still in its experimental phase. Although, for a first game, this one is still pretty nice! The Sega Genesis produced some awesome music and picture. For me though, the second game was more memorable because that's the one that got played more by my friends and where the afternoon and Saturday morning cartoons came from. This Sonic game only just developed the blueprint of those things to come.

Belated Sonic Week Finale StH Review   Nincompoco
Yesterday was the end of Sonic Week... who cares I never made a finale :P and the week will end off with a review of the one that started it all... Sonic the Hedgehog. The first one not the crappy 06 version.
Basically Dr. Robotnik (egg man) stole little animals to power his robots and will use the chaos emeralds to power his army up even further to take over the world. This game is just Sonic and Robotnik, one on one(GOD if we knew they would add so many characters). There are 6 worlds you must go through to get to the final stage.
Green Hill: a happy meadow of happiness, except for all the robots out to KEEL you.
Marble: guess whether the world is made of marble, or marbles. Now that I think about it marble sounds weird... marble marble marble.
Spring Yard: a yard in spring, what else?
Labyrinth: trust me, you will NEVER get a good score on time here...
Star Light: an 8-bit version of starlight carnival in Sonic Colors.
Scrap Brain: or hell, eighter way works.
Each world has 3 stages, at the end you face the boss. The graphics are pretty amazing for it's time (1991) and the gameplay is pretty fast paced, they make you go fast but also think about your actions because if you don't jump right now you go face first into wall spikes. There are branching paths leading up and down meaning you can play differently every time you go in a stage. Also if you end the first or second stage with a certain amount of rings you get a bonus stage for more lives and score. The hardest zone if you couldn't tell is the scrap brain zone. Hard traps, enemies, and it's not easy to get rings. However upon beating this forsaken level you reach the final stage and face off against Robotnik's final plan. Now I leave the other bosses to you guys, but I will still tell you the final boss anyways. There are 4 columns that will crush you, 2 pop out at a time, 1 has egg man in it. Avoid them and hit the one with Robotnik. Then a laser shoots 4 blasts down you have to avoid. Then try to keep hitting eggers until you win. Afterward he runs to his escape pod to get the heck outta there. And you win! Yay! Wait... why is Robotnik...
Basically Dr. Robotnik (egg man) stole little animals to power his robots and will use the chaos emeralds to power his army up even further to take over the world.
Oh crap...
So to beat the game for real you have to get the 6 chaos emeralds in each special stage (yes 6, the seventh is discovered in the next game) and once you have all 6 you get to see egg man throwing a temper tantrum. Yay! I won for reals! Then the emeralds fly to different locations for the next game... may the journey continue. Wait who the heck are you?
I'm Tails! I'm your new partner!
... get out...
But Sega said I could...
Sega? Did you say... SEGA? I AM SEGA!!!

Sonic The Hedgehog Review!   deathding
Oh boy, I've wanted to tackle this game for a while! So Sonic The Hedgehog is one of the most famous video game icons ever made now, and this game alone proves why. But before I start the review, let's start with a little back-story........
Back in 1990 It was pretty difficult to buy a video game. You didn't know if it was going to be the best game ever made or the ultimate rotten turd in the giant abominable s**t stack. (I am looking at you, E.T.) And all you had to see on what the game was like was a commercial barely explaining anything, a photo, a weak description, and a name. And games no matter how bad were VERY pricy. Don't believe me? $40 DOLLARS FOR DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE HOLY MOLY THAT IS HIGHWAY ROBBERY!
But whether or not you would want to LIVE in the 90's, you have to agree that games were pretty hard to enjoy. There was so many bad games and companies as you already know, (LJN....) And it was like a 50/50 chance you'd find a good game. Except one gaming mascot that you could always count on to give you many guaranteed hours of fun.......
Mario. The plumber who SAVED THE VIDEO GAME INDUSTRY! (Well, it was mostly Nintendo, they even made Mario) No matter what garbage you saw being sold for $400 dollars, (VIRTUAL BOY......) You could always count on the Mario Bros for fun every single time! (Well, except Hotel Mario. But who had a CD-I anyways?) Mario's game were the best in the world! Such classics like Super Mario Bros, Mario 2, Mario 3, Mario 64, Mario World, MARIO TENNIS, MARIO GOLF, MARIO PAINT, DR. MARIO, PAPER MARIO, IT WAS LIKE NO MATTER WHAT GAME YOU BOUGHT WITH HIS NAME ON IT, YOU HAD THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE!
But then Sega, being the awesome company they were, (WERE,) They made the worlds first 16-bit system, BEHOLD, THE SEGA GENESIS! *Clap Clap Clap* You see a difference yet? Back then, games were about 2 things. Fun, and graphics. Back then people were like, "Hey dude have you seen the NINTENDO 64? 64 Bits dude! 64 BITS!" Nobody cares about bits or whatever nowadays because most games graphics look either great, or just like a lot of other games.
But back then, graphics was a huge part of a game. Did they look rushed, blurry, and hard to look at? (ACTION 52....) Or did they look colorful, nice, pretty, and settling on the eyes? (Fantasy Zone!) Either way, Sega knew that the NES, (Or the 1985 Official Nintendo Entertainment System, hehe,) Was starting to lose competition because of the 8-bit graphics, so they made the Sega Genesis to show off what they could do to revolutionize graphics as we know it.
Then they needed to have a mascot. For a while they had this character called Alex The Kidd, and while his games were alright, (Enchanted Castle though is one of my Top 20 Favorite Games Ever,) They weren't phenomenal. Then in 1990 they must have realized that people liked going fast in video games. Like how 90% of the Mario Bros Games people were holding down the B button to go faster! So Sega created Sonic The Hedgehog, which if I talked all about it's history, then this "Review" would be over 9,000 words long. (Hehe 9,000 hehe)
Gamers instantly loved Sonic The Hedgehog for his, well, EVERYTHING! The blue blur was on top of the world and was even compared to Super Mario at the time! Kids were like, "THERESTHIS GUY NAMD SANIC WOW CHECK IM OUT HES LIKE MORIO!" *Intentionally spelled wrong* And more people wanted to play it because kids thought there was going to be a new mascot who could always make games that make you want to wet yourself!
But was the game REALLY as good as the kids say? Is it possible we have a case of an overrated video game? Or does it really belong in the *Turns on megaphone* GREAT OFFICIAL GOLDEN VIDEO GAME STAR HAVEN HALL OF FAME AND FORTUNE!? (Try saying that 3 times fast! >:D) Well let's finally stop gushing and talk about the game that started it all, the game that the 90's worshiped and sacrificed they're souls to get a few minutes of holy game-play from the greatest genesis title of all time, (Maybe not THAT good,) Sonic. The. Hedgehog.
So you turn on your Sega Genesis thinking, "This better not suck or I AM GOING TO STRANGLE SOMEBODY" As you hear the classic line, "Sega!" (Which ACTUALLY took up more space then an entire zone! Not kidding, look it up. They did this cause they had too much space.)
Then you hear some flashy noises, you look at the screen in awe, you see a beautiful background, a ring in the middle, AND THEN, THE JOURNEY OF SONIC THE HEDGEHOG BEGINS! *Alright enough over dramatic lines :(*
Since this isn't a walk-through, I won't be saying things like, "So go on this platform and advance to the right to get a hidden shield!" Or anything like that, so yeah.
The game begins as you start in the Green Hill Zone. Instantly you are greeted with beautiful graphics, wonderfully catchy and memorable music, smooth working controls, no glitches, (Unless you try to find them then that kind of defeats the purpose now doesn't it?) And a bunch of platforms, loop-De-loops, busting up badniks (Spelled that right Vizzed.....And yes, I did use this joke before, but I really did spell that right so we're cool.) And fighting a pretty easy boss fight at the end of every stage. There really isn't a story but as far as I can tell, this is what I think the story is. Actually, screw that it's in the manual. (LOL If you bought the game without it.)
"Dr. Ivo Robotnik, the mad scientist, is snatching innocent animals
and turning them into evil robots! Only one tough dude can put an end to
the demented scientist's fiendish scheme. It's Sonic, the real cool hedgehog with the spiked haircut and power sneakers that give him super speed."

"Help Sonic fight hordes of metal maniacs and do the loop with the Super Sonic Spin Attack.

Speed down twisting tunnels and swing over dangerous booby traps. Leap
across lava pits and dodge burning rocks. Then splash through the
chilling waters in an underground cavern. And if you're lucky, you can
warp to the secret zone where you spin around in a floating maze! Your
greatest challenge lurks in a secret lab where you come face to face
with Dr. Robotnik himself!"?

"Spin through space, loop 'til you're dizzy, save the animals and become the super hero. Be Sonic! Be atomic!"

(Copy And Paste I Love You.....And this isn't cheating, it's just the manual.)
Quite the story there! It may seem a bit basic and stupid, but it's clever, funny, hasn't been used before, AND IT DOESN'T SAY......

"Rescue the Princess *Insert name here* From the evil *Insert Baddie Name Here* And save the village from havoc!"

Because lord knows that is WAY too cliche. That's one reason I like sonic, because Like "The Great Clement" Said, Sonic doesn't rescue princesses, he doesn't want love or anything, he is too cool for that! One of the reasons I HATE Sonic 06, Sonic is rescuing a princess.......UGH SEGA.......WHAT WERE YOU SMOKING!??! But we aren't AT that game yet........
So first off, the game-play. Sonic plays kind of like Mario basically. He can run, (Only much faster,) He can jump, if you hold down on the down button while moving you can use it to curl into a ball and hurt badniks. And when you do it on a curve, you can spin really fast and get a lot of speed!
So when you hit a badnik, you save an animal inside of it! Doesn't do anything but you get points for doing it. So if you just want to get that good old high score......(Which people have stopped caring about since Mario came out)
When you collect a golden ring, (And they are EVERYWHERE,) You become invincible and can't be killed by anything except drowning, being crushed, or falling into a bottomless pit. If you hit a hazard with no rings, you lose a life. If you hit a hazard with even just ONE ring, you don't die, but lose that ring, but you can get it back.
There is classic powers like the shield, invincibility, speed boost, extra life, you have heard this all before, so yeah.
If you collect 50 rings, and get to the flag at the end of the level, (Touch the flag to beat the level,) You will see a giant golden ring. Go in here and you will be inside a rotating maze. Your goal is to find a chaos emerald. If you touch an R....Circle let's call them, the maze rotates the other way. If you run into a flashing red and blue...Circle then you lose your chance to get the emerald, but can still get the emerald the next time you jump into the Giant golden ring.
If you manage to collect all 7 chaos emeralds, (I actually think it's 6 in the first game now that I think about it.....) You get a special ending. And a congratulations. Beat the game without them and you get a Image of Dr. Robotnik holding all the ones you missed and it says, "Try again!"
If you beat all the badniks in the game, collect every ring in every stage and bonus stage, go through all 6 zones in under 30 minutes, never lose a life, spend only 20 seconds in each bonus stage, beat Robotnik in 5 seconds, and I'M JUST KIDDING RELAX :D
Now onto the music. The soundtrack in this game, and you will hear me say this a lot in Sonic games, is downright LEGENDARY. Every single song in this game would make it in my top 40 video game music! It is colorful and peaceful in Green Hill, Catchy and upbeat in the Marble Zone, Fantastic and magical in the Spring Yard Zone, neat and awesome in the Labyrinth zone, Quiet and relaxing in the Star Light Zone, and adventurous and epic in the Scrap Brain Zone. The boss music is very pressure raising and feels like you are taking on a boss, and the bonus stages are blindingly (Literally, It bonus stages hurt my eyes!) fantastic! The final boss theme is also very tension raising. Overall, the music is some of the best music I have heard on an early 16-bit console.
The sound effects are funny and are alive with emotions! It feels GOOD to murder a badnik and listen to the explosions of Dr. Robotniks Ships when you beat him, you hear a beep kind of chime when you get a ring, you hear a funny BOING sound when you get a shield, and when you get a bubble to breathe air in the water level, he makes a hilarious king of hiccup sound! :D
Now onto charm. And this game is DROWNING in it. *No pun intended* When Sonic is near the edge of something, he acts like he is about to fall of, if you remain idle, he taps his foot and gives you a funny look, I like the way his legs look when he's running, (They form a circle, it's cool!) When Sonic beats a stage he gives you a smile, when you die sonic gives you that funny WTF face and when you beat Robotnik, you can see his mustache all black! This game has just as much charm as Donkey Kong Country, IF NOT MORE!
The graphics in this game are absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I love the look of Green Hill, (I love it more then Emerald Hill from the second game because of the Night theme) Marble zone looks like if you put a stone palace in a forest, spring yard looks like a casino, (Love it more then Casino Night from Sonic 2,) Labyrinth zone is what it is, a labyrinth! Star light is very pretty and relaxing on the eyes, and scrap brain is nothing but HAZARDS FIRE SAW BLADES BADNIKS WATER KILL MURDER BLOOD HAHAHAHAHAHAH!
So yeah, graphics are GREAT!
At last we have level design. This game, it excels at that. Everything is placed there almost perfectly and really compliments Sonic's speed and keeps the pace going, and while there is a few cheap moments in the game, (Bricks+Spring Yard= DEATH) The game for the most part has great level design and badnik placement.
Overall, this game isn't good. It isn't great at all. It sucks at being awesome. Sega is not very smart when it comes to making a BAD game, because this game is LEGENDARY. REVOLUTIONARY. ABSOLUTELY A MASTERPIECE. I was going to give this game a 9.5, but SCREW THAT! I can't give it a ten because of THAT OBNOXIOUSLY RETARDED LABYRINTH ZONE BOSS and some other minor nitpicks, but I really
love this game. People were right, this game rivals even Mario. There was a time when Sega were game making masters, and while they still KIND OF are, (Colors, Generations on consoles, Unleashed?) They definitely have had some bad days. (Sonic 06.....Secret rings, Black Knight, Genesis GBA Port, Shadow,) If Sega can ever make a masterpiece like this again, I would cry. Generations is AMAZING, but they screwed up the 3DS port, the one I GOT. Colors is really great and all, but THE RED RINGS.......
In a final conclusion, Sonic The Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis is one of the best games I have ever played. EVER. While some games like Xenoblade Chronicles and Mario World might not make my top 10 games, SONIC GETS A GUARANTEED SPOT IN THE TOP 5. They did everything so well and great for it's time and every problem is a PATHETIC NITPICK, and that's why my final rating for this game, is 50 giant golden rings out of 10.
(Want an actual rating? 9.9/10. PLAY. NOW. OR. DIE. > : D)

Oh my god.... oh my god...   the protoman
Llllllllllll.....
Oh wait, it's not time yet.
Only a few more minutes.
Okay. Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, children of all ages, the geeks and freaks, trolls and derps are like.....
WELCOME! I know that's mulletmike, but I have used it as my signature of opening for a long time, so don't get mad...
Okay, I am not going to lie to you.
I have a dislike for Sonic the hedgehog. And tomorrow, I am probably going to wake up, and get a nuke with Sonic's face on it that says
"VENGEANCE" dropped on my house.  Yes, I know that sounds very, very, VERY overreacting, since Sonic fans aren't that bad.
Right?
RIGHT???
Seriously, though, don't kill me. So, anyway, the reason why is because I-
Wait, before I continue, let me make something clear. It's not because I am a Mario fan, I have a dislike for Mario games. I do have a little brother who loves Mario and sonic, though. Now that that's aside, here is the real reason. It was very frustrating. Going in full speed, jumping over rockets, blowing through robots, ripping apart machinery!
Only to be stopped by a wall. Immediately, that perfect sync of speed you were in, that super awesome murdering, all gone due to a wall! This is what made the game so annoying. However, this game, I won't lie to you, it's good. Not because I have a dislike for my blue happy meals character, it means I will give this game a NEGATIVE rating.
Because it's a cool game, really.  Well, let's go.
Really, though.
I would like to start out with the graphics, and I have to tell you something. For Sega Genesis, this is perhaps one of the better graphically advanced games, especially since this was in the beginning of the Genesis age!
The genesis of the Sega Genesis. Get it? Get it?
Genesis, as in, Genesis, right, like Genesis? Ah, screw it.
Anyways, this game is graphically amazing, even nowadays! Okay, um...
Maybe not nowadays... Just, uh, just... just ignore that. I, uh... Yeah, uh, um, yeah. Ignore all that. This game looks super awesome.... for the Sega genesis.
Don't ask me anything else about it, because... because.... I suck in graphical descriptions.
Next up, let's take a look at the sound. Sure, it isn't the best, it isn't entirely the worst, but you have to realize, this was the...
Genesis of the Sega Genesis! HAHAHA!
Actually that isn't funny. Okay, so I think the explosions sound...
Unbelievably pathetic. "PEW!". As I heard this sound, a very long, awkward silence broke in my room. Pew? PEW?! Really? I have heard lot's of better explosion sounds then that!
Even before this game ...
BUT, it is supposed to be a kids game so, maybe it was done on purpose. Right? I guess. Then there is the laser sound, which sounds like an ordinary "zap".
Disappointing, eh? Not really, because this is old school. We didn't have anything better back then. Oh, AND, it's a kids game. Yeah, okay.
The story...
Let me explain.
There is a  fat man, and his name is Dr Robotnik! He is the evil twin of Ronald Mcdonald, and he wants to put all the animals in happy meal robots made out of plastic! Now a new happy meals character named Sonic has to stop him! And... that's it. To prove that these robots are actually plastic, I have one of the best explanation's ever... here is:
PROTOMAN'S THEORIES: Sonic robots are plastic.
Looking at the Sonic animes, all of them show sonic destroying robots by breaking them in to millions of pieces. Instead of there being a giant hole, they BURST into pieces. This is more commonly seen with plastic toys, or wooden planks.
With metal, there should have been some sort of giant bullet hole! Anyway, that isn't the story, but here is the story in short.
Robotnik gets animals, he takes them, makes them robots, sonic tries to stop him.
In short: Robotnik + animals = Robots!
Sonic + robotnik = It's about to go down.....
Depth,  depth, depth...
Yeah, this game has lots of secrets, and that means... SEARCHING TIME! Chaos emeralds! These things give you a diffrent ending! Here is the first evil ending:
HAHAHA! You couldn't get them, and I can juggle, hahaha~!
Here is the good ending:
I AM ENRAGED!!!
Um... Okay? The time line is still the same, and it really doesn't matter so...
What was the point?
Now let me ell you how hard this game is.
I died a lot. I made a death count.
Deaths: 39 deaths.
Game overs:13 Game overs. Oh craaap...
So, in short, I never even got close to beating the game, and even worse I still have a dislike for it after playing it all over again...
so, come at me again? I still haven't found this game anymore AWESOME then I thought I would.

Sonic   Harley3651
Not much can be said about Sega's first Sonic game that hasn't already been said both good or bad. I thought I'd give my thoughts and opinions on it anyway. First released on June 23, 1991 as a pack-in title with the Genesis, Sonic quickly out shined Sega's old mascot Alex Kidd to become Mario's rival in the 16 bit wars. What Mario did for Nintendo Sonic did for Sega by becoming one of the most recognizable mascots of all time.   So, after that intro what do I think about the game as a whole? Well I've broken down my thoughts into 7 different categories ranging from 1-10. Let us begin shall we?   Graphics 9: First up is the graphics. While the game turned 27 years old this year it still looks fantastic. Not once did I encounter any slow down or graphical flickering throughout my entire play through. To say it holds up today graphic wise would be an understatement.   Sound 10: The games music along with its sound effects are still amazing to listen to over 20 years later. Now is it music that you will want to listen to outside of the game? No, not at all. But while you're playing it keeps you wanting to continue through the game.   Addictiveness 6: The game is somewhat addictive to play through. While its great to sit and play through it once back to back play troughs aren't really needed in my opinion.   Story 5: Not much of one if you ask me.But the story from what I could gather is Dr. Robotnik wants to steal the 7 Chaos Emeralds while trapping animals inside of robots and mechanical capsules. So its up to our hero Sonic to stop Robotnik get back the emeralds and save the animals.   Depth 4: The game isn't all that in depth. If you know what to do you can run through the game in about 90 minutes. I actually did time my run through from when I started to when I finished and it took me exactly an hour and a half.   Difficulty 5: I decided on putting the games difficulty in the middle. Its not to hard nor is it to easy either. It does get a bit challenging at later levels but nothing to hard that you can't get through.Overall 8.2: Overall I gave the game a rating of 8.2. Yeah my  other ratings were up and down. But overall I'd still rate the game pretty high. I still recommend it if You have never played the game before. Even if you have played it I still recommend it. But for me I am happy I played through it once. Once is all I need and I don't  have a desire to play through it again for now.  Final Thoughts: At the time Sega along with Sonic gave Mario and Nintendo a run for their money during the 16 bit wars. As a kid I was a Sega fan. That meant I was a fan of Sonic. Even if you were on Team Nintendo I still say Sonic the Hedgehog is still worth your time to play it.

Gotta go fast! Sonic x or something   becerra95
This review will be more of a simple take on a classic franchise and its beginning. Not going to lie when I was first introduced to this game it was through a plug and play device with the first and second games, a spin off pinball game and a knock off puyo puyo game. I enjoyed the games and introduced me into the world of the blue hedgehog. I haven’t played the original genesis version until ten years later (2017) and gosh it was beautiful. This is Sonic The Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis review.
Story: 8
An evil genius, Dr. Robotnik wants to capture all the chaos emeralds to use its powers for his nefarious purposes while taking animals as hostages or robot minions. It’s up to a spunky blue hedgehog named Sonic to save the animals inhabiting the island and ruin Dr. Robotnik’s plans to use the chaos emeralds.
The story is pretty straightforward and simple to say the least. Nothing too spectacular but motivating to get through the game knowing that it’s up to you to stop the Doctor. Nothing else, a solid 8
Graphics: 9
For a Sega genesis game in 1991 it looked so beautiful and the graphics are really good. The speed and fluidity of the game is amazing and it does show the power of the Sega genesis. The details of the game are amazing when it came out of 1991 and started off the battle between Sega and Genesis in the console wars. Sega does what Nintendon’t.
Sound: 8
The music is pretty good. From the upbeat music of Green Hill zone to the more slow tempo music of marble zone. Starry night in starlight zone and the boss music really helps the game a lot with its attitude and gameplay. One of my favorite song in the game is actually Labyrinth zone and have that as a ringtone actually. That shows how great the music is for me despite the limitations Sega genesis has with its audio and fm. A solid 8
Depth: 7
The game somewhat lacks depth to be fair. I mean yes it has you collecting emeralds to stop robotnik from using the powers, but it’s not much of a necessity since you don’t get a reward for obtaining all the emeralds other than a different end scene… kinda lame. The stages are different yes, each with its own quirks but most are just drawn out long like marble zone or labyrinth zone… the farther you go into the stages, you will realize how much this game lacks.. did I mention that lack of enemies is a negative? Well a 7 is fair.
Addictive: 8
The game is pretty good itself and has some replay ability. It’s more so on its trial and error that helps the longevity of the game and see how fast you can clear the zones to where speed run can be a factor to beat the game. Obtaining the emeralds can help with the replay value if you miss a few but stated earlier, it’s not much of a necessity. An 8 to be generous.
Difficulty: 7
The game isn’t difficult to a point. First few zones it’s easy but what I mentioned earlier, the stages tend to get drawn out a bit. The stages aren’t hard at defeating enemies, especially the later zones when there seems to be a lack of enemies at times and you’re just avoiding obstacles and traps. The hardest part of the game is really getting all the chaos emeralds with the special stages but again, there’s barely a reward getting them on the first sonic game. What’s the point? You can easily ditch all that. Removing the emeralds I would say labyrinth zone is the hardest not because of the enemies or obstacles… it’s because of the water and how long it takes. If you don’t drown, you can easily lose time if you don’t know where to go. Other than those nitpicking interests, game is fairly easy.
Overall this is a great introduction for the series but the developers really had to add more content to the game since it goes from going fast to slowing down to avoid traps and “where’s the enemies” I love the game, I do it’s pretty good to play at time but what they lack on the game they fixed on later sequels which are huge improvements for obvious reasons. For this my review rating is
My rating: 8/10

Sonic the Hedgehog   ross4587
This is, without question, one of the most popular Sonic the Hedgehog games on Vizzed, and maybe one of the most popular games. With Sonic the Hedgehog as the one, and only playable character, he travels on a long journey to prevent the evil Dr Eggman (or Robotnik I suppose that was his name in those days) from turning animals into robots as part of his plot for World Domination. As this is one of the first ever Sonic games (created 1991), the mission objective is very unfamiliar to the blue hedgehog. The story in this game would go on to become very popular and familiar in future Sonic games. Sonic's abilities are limited, with him being new to the computer game scene. Only run, jump and spin will help Sonic travel through his journey, one in which he will encounter several robotic animals already transformed by Eggman, such as the motobug. Sonic must collect golden rings in order to survive damage, as no rings means the loss of a life upon taking damage. A new life is given for every 100 rings. Other items, such as those in the form of televisions, will be spread about the levels, giving Sonic different special powers, such as invincibility or faster speed. A spinning sign post will indicate the end of a level, and if Sonic have more than 50 rings, he can enter a giant ring to access a bonus level, where Chaos Emeralds much coveted by Eggman can be won, 6 emeralds in total. Unlike in future games, all emeralds collected will not result in Sonic changing into Super Transformation, adding to the complication of the game. At the end of each zone, the blue hedgehog confronts Eggman, and must defeat him to continue his journey. Defeating him in the Final Zone will result in the completion of the game, and send an angry Eggman off on a long trip to another land. Overall, this game in lots of ways signals the beginning of things to come in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, and for all the younger players on Vizzed, some of whom may not be familiar to Sonic the Hedgehog games, this is definitely the game which will start increasing their addiction to the Sonic games. Its a huge reason why Sonic is so popular, even today.

Reasons why I love this game   EricCartmen
1. Amazing controls
They feel awesome no matter what version of this game your playing on that does not include the game boy advance version because that game is bad but back to the subject it has great controls in the game there just like Mario's controls. They are very tight and not like other games out there like a certain company who makes movie games with terrible controls.
2. Best graphics for any Sega Genesis/Mega Drive game
There amazing for 1991 because back then not many home consoles had awesome graphics like this that does not mean the older consoles are bad but back to the subject there amazing and wonderful.
3. Music
What can i say the music is amazing and its very catchy I listening to this games music all the time that's how great this games music is not one music sounds like the bottom of a barrel. I think even a album was made from this games music but i'm not sure.
4. Levels
They are all great creative and a masterpiece and feel like a roller coaster but with a hedgehog. Sure some zones don't feel like a roller coaster but that's okay not every level has to be like that but it still has great levels that are fun and never gets board. The levels also have very good music as well but as well they may be hard for some people getting used to this game. At the end of ever 3rd level you fight the evil Dr. Robotnik with one of his crazy egg mobiles.
5. Story
Dr. Robotnik has made animals into robots and you must set the animals free from the robots that he made and at the end of the boss you must push the robotasizer to free lots of the animals.
6. Tv show
Because of this game and its squeal sonic 2 DiC wanted to make a Television show based on the video game and they did called the adventures of sonic the hedgehog with 65 episodes I think i could be wrong but t was a great show for its time and because of it many memes spawned on the internet there are some differences between the show and the game like there some new characters that never been in sonic games like scratch and grounder. It was so poplar that it spawned a game just because of this cartoon called Dr. Robotniks mean been machine. It was about Sonic and Tails ruining Dr. Robotniks evil plans but sometimes they get captured by him and his team but sonic and tails always know the way out and to ruin his plans and it also makes lots of kids and even adults laugh as well. There also other sonic shows but were not going to talk about them because I never seen them before so I don't know what happens but for the 90s adventures of sonic the hedgehog will always be known as one of the best DiC Kids Cartoons in human history.

Sonic 1 review   Jynx
Oh boy, it's the first Sonic game! Man this game is awesome. How can you not love this game. OK, I can actually think of a way to not love this game but that's a review for another day. So do I actually need to say anything about this game? No, I don't, so play the game................But if you want I could go in-depth.
The graphics are great. Everything looks very colorful. And who doesn't love color. Well besides some people but we're not here to talk about
that. The graphics are great. 'Nuff said. 8 out of 10.
Now lets talk about the music. Catchy as heck. I love it and so do you. The music is great and we all know so there's really no point in talking about it but I'm doing it anyway because I feel like it. Sonic music. Good. 9 out 10.
Moving on, this game is very fun and very addictive. There's not really much to say soooooooooooooooooooo yeah. 8 out of 10.
This game is has a lot to offer. Sure all you do is run and jump but the levels are  very satisfying to beat and fun to play. But the game actually isn't too long. 7 out of 10.
The game isn't too hard. It's really easy to breeze through, but the game can be hard and it is annoying when going really fast and dash into an enemy. So for that, 5 out of 10.

sonic the hegehog review   ray12345
Sega wanted to make a game that would sell like Mario so they made sonic the hedgehog.  Graphics 7. The graphics are old but it was good at the time. the detail of the water and the trees were amazing on the Genesis at the time. Sound the songs are pretty good, green hill zone is great and everything alse is AMAZING, i cant count how many times i hum spring yard zone!     Addictiveness This game is sooooo addict eve
the levels are so fun that you play it sooo many times! Story The story is classic dr eggman turns animals into robots and sonic has to save them. its just great and simple.   Depth,The game has LOTs of depth  The bonus stages are fun and hard and scrap brain zone is SOOOOO hard. Difficulty the game can behard sometimes but it is not very hard.

Sonic the Hedgehog is Amazing!!!   SutibunKoria
Sonic the Hedgehog is a classic. You running around as the Blue Blur was always an amazing experience and this is no different. For a retro game this was an amazing experience. Sonic is in 60 Frames per second. The sound quality in the game is also one of its upsides, the music sounds great and is original in High Definition Quality for all to enjoy hearing. The story revolves around Sonic rescuing creatures from capsules due to the Notorious Dr. Robotnik, now known as Doctor Eggman. Your goal is to play 3 acts in each of 7 worlds to get all of the Chaos Emeralds and defeat Robotnik once and for all.

Well sonic team did a good job on their first game. The graphics great around.ItSe sound is great you know green hill zone's theme is nice. I will come back almost everyday just to race on green hill zone. The story is from Mario is different you save not a princess animals you save. Well there are seven zones in the game and there are seven zones in the game (eight if you pick final zone) and there is a level select cheat. The difficulty not to hard (for me) the chaos emerald stage is fun but you can get sick from it. Well Dr. Eggman what's up next. Dr. Eggman: As you wish. So next up is sonic 1 for the game gear

Sonic's 1st steps into the video game world.   Dr_fronkensteen
Ah Sonic the hedgehog. A classic, the 1st 16 bit masterpiece. If you haven't played this game, play it right now. If your new to Sonic and the 1st Sonic game you have played was Sonic Generations good for you. The 1st level is almost an exact replica of Green Hill Zone Act 1. The only thing different that I remember is omechao. I mean if I play Sonic Generations, I'd fond some levels from games I haven't played like Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Heroes maby. Oh man I just...wow Sega put a lot of work into this game. Just wow. I just love this game that's all =).
And yes a lot of people r saying it's problibly not even a review and such so I'm gonna think about this game a bit more so it can acctuly be a review so yea. I'll think about it so just don't comment about dis being bad ok? And this message is temporary.

And thus Sega became legit   classgame
So with the launch of this game Sega now had a new mascot (sorry Alex Kidd), and all of a sudden an empire was born, even long after Sega stopped making consoles and games
Gameplay and Story: Doctor Robotnik is turning innocent animals into Robots....why? no seriously the manual doesn't say....you know for some reason I feel like his intentions were more clear in Sonic Underground considering he took over Mobotropolis #WeDontTalkAboutManic (sorry I had to do an Encanto joke since Sonia found her way into a game even though Manic didn't or so I thought there is also a hedgehog that calls himself Scourge....Manic was green, you don't fool me) well I guess it's up to sonic to save them, and all he has is his sonic spin attack.
Graphics: well a lot better than the Sega Master System (yes this got an SMS release as well but I haven't played that)
Soundtrack: Each Zone has it's own unique background music which quickly changes when you get to the end of act 3 when we get standard boss music.
Addictive: I did play this quite a bit in my day to a point where it was too easy to gain lives and continues.
Depth: There are 6 levels to this game plus the final boss level (that would be Robotnik) plus the secret zone where you have to get the chaos emeralds, trust me you don't want to touch that Goal button otherwise you risk leaving that zone without the emerald and you'll have to play that level again. Also this is probably the only game in the series with 3 acts (I haven't played them all the sonic games though, even though I did attempt Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic colours on a different site).
Difficulty: So yeah this is the very first game in the franchise and we don't have the spin dash thing which let's face it really could have been useful in this game. And he's on his own here, no tails, not even knuckles...or any of his crew that he met after the main Genesis era. I will confirm that I did make it to the end of this game twice, once without the emeralds and the second time with the emeralds, however I have yet to make it to the end a third time either way even with save technology. Here we get some stuff in monitors that will help us out a blue shield, some invisibility dust which changes the background music for about 30 seconds, sneakers that will make you go faster, and a monitor that will up your coin count by ten
Post Review follow up: So this game was part of the 6 pak cartridge which was how I owned a copy of this 20 years ago, and I own a copy again because it's part of the Genesis Mini, I also currently own this as part of the 4 Sonic 4 pak for Nintendo DS.
This concludes my review, join me tomorrow when I review another random Genesis game (maybe Golden Axe at least I'll have something to say about it considering the holidays are nearly over for me and I might as well end the console gaming filming). Man I'm not up to it today am I?

Sonic The Hedgehog Reveiw   hackerman
this is an incredible game it was hard for me to stop although the bosses were a bit to easy and at times if you are running too fast sometimes you can easily die but this game was fun and i highly recommend you play it. For it's time it's graphics were excellent. it could of used a storyline but who cares it made up for that with it's awesome gameplay. Your goal is to save the woodland creatures from dr.robotnick if you find the bosses to easy like the first one you could wait an hour before he hits you don't worry they actually do get harder. Anyways have fun playing this game i really loved it.

If your just getting into the sonic series I would recommend this one for you to try first you get used to the controls real soon but now for the story there the evil man name dr.robonix or dr.eggman who wants to make eggman land but needs the choas emeralds to make it and sonic goes out to stop him so dr.eggman puts animals in his robots called beatnik's and sonic needs all 6 emeralds to get the good ending and if you don't get the emeralds you will get the bad ending but in later sonic games it 7 choas emeralds and you get something awesome but only after sonic 1 and I wont tell you what you get for all 7 emeralds in sonic 2 so that's it

Sonic the Hedgehog Cheat Codes

Config Mode

There is a code called control mode, which is required before activating this code.

To activate control mode, press UP, C, DOWN, C, LEFT, C, RIGHT, C at the title screen, but before pressing start to begin the game, press and hold A as you hit start. Now, rather than just being in control mode, you can enable config mode by pressing button B.

Sonic will morph into a ring, and the arrows can move him anywhere, even in the air, or through obstacles such as walls, floors, or even ceilings {GREAT FOR TELEPORTING!}.

You can change the item Sonic appears as by hitting A while in config mode. Button B makes Sonic normal again, and button C will place the sprite that you have selected for Sonic to appear as. For example, you press B, and Sonic becomes a ring, press C to make a ring appear exactly where the ring icon is.

WARNING!: This will distort several different things, such as the score, time, and other various icons throughout the game such as the finish sign at the end of the first two acts of each zone that spins when Sonic shoots past them, and the small score icons that appear whenever Sonic jumps high enough after finishing a level. That is all I have noticed in my time playing the game, but there could be more out there yet. The game is still quite playable this way, so it should not hurt you.

Is it just me, or does the Debug Mode code always fail to work? Every time I try to input it. I get the ring sound and it doesn't work, or it goes to level select and STILL doesn't work.
