I flailed around on the buttons in the first battle. Nothing seems to work. Hmm.

Okay, I still have no honest idea how to start this game, but to be able to do anything, you need to select the fourth option at the main menu. Somewhere in there it allows you to create a new pilot. After you do that, you can proceed to gameplay.
