''You're wasting power!''   lolid23
For my 100th post on this site, I'll write a review of another Neptunia game. MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune VS Zombies is a game that I actually wasn't going to get at first, it's known that this game was slightly censored for America and Europe, that, or at least IFI did a few things that can be interpreted as censorship...I'm talking about the school years of the characters, in the original Japanese version, Rom and Ram, for example, are elementary schoolers, but in the western versions, they are freshmen...there's also the fact that during an event, Noire asks the question ''If a teacher told you to sniff a sock that hasn't been washed for a week, would you sniff it?!''...Supposedly, you can clearly hear the word ''panties'' (pantsu, I guess) if you play with Japanese voices, I say ''supposedly'' because I never play this game with Japanese voices, I never play Japanese games with the original voices if I have the option of playing with an English dub. Anyway, the school grades were altered, but in the end, just like I did with Blue Reflection, I let it slide and I got the game, even though I'm very anti-censorship, other than a few minor things though, the rest of the game shouldn't be censored, which means that even in the Japanese version, the clothes of the characters don't tear, unlike the previous game, Hyperdimension Neptunia U, MegaTagmension is basically a sequel of Hyperdimension Neptunia U, there is fan service in this game, in fact, you have the option of equipping (some of) the torn outfits if you so desire, the fact that this game doesn't have ''Partial Nudity'' as one of its content descriptors is...interesting. Anyway, let's begin.
Story: MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune VS Zombies has a better story than Hyperdimension Neptunia U, in this game, the characters are attending a school, Gamicademi, there are plans of closing down the school due to a lack of students, and the protagonist Blanc, wants to read as many books as she can while she is still a student, Neptune is trying to make a movie about zombies and Blanc quickly becomes the director of said movie, at first, the film club has very few members, but more and more characters join to help make the movie, it's also only a matter untile the real zombies appear, and if it's about making a movie about zombies to try to save the school, why not use real zombies? There is something behind the zombies, the final boss is the cause of the zombies in Gamicademi, and...I don't know if it's because there are funny moments in the game, or the fact that there are more characters in this game than in Hyperdimension Neptunia U, or the fact the we actually kind of see the effects of the presence of the final boss in the game, or all the previous things, why I like the story, but yeah, it's not saying much, but I like the story of MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune VS Zombies, the story actually means something unlike Hyperdimension Neptunia U, here, not only you defeat a powerful being at the end of the game, you also saved Gamicademi and the school won't close down, by the end of the game the characters have made at least one movie as well, in Neptunia U, it's something like ''Next-gen mech must be defeated and there are more quests, however monsters aren't exactly stronger and people aren't in danger'', that doesn't apply that much for this game, here it's ''let's make a movie about zombies and save our school, we also have to defeat these zombies and protect our classmates!'' After all, some zombies are none other than students of Gamicademi, and the presence of the final boss, Hachimajin, in Gamicademi is what is turning them into zombies. Hachimajin is...a better antagonist than Next-gen mech, overall, it's a nice and funny story.
Graphics: I was thinking about giving this category a 7, but once again, I'll give a Neptunia game for PS Vita only a 6 in this category, it's true that the 3D models look nice and a few textures look decent, but overall, as always with Neptunia games for PS Vita, it looks more like a game that could run on the Gamecube or Xbox than anything else, at least Tsunako had to draw new designs for every character specifically for this game, and her art is beautiful as always, the characters look nice with their school uniforms, also, unlike Hyperdimension Neptunia U, this game contains CG images...that's cool.
Sound: It's true that there is a lot of recycled music, but at least the reused music is really good at times, and there are a lot of original songs as well. I can't be the only one who thinks that the original music of MegaTagmension is better than the original music of Hyperdimension Neptunia U, in my opinion, the final boss theme ''Wild Dance With Wild Scamp'' is better than ''Nightmare Innocence'' from Hyperdimension Neptunia U, the song ''Virtual Singularity'' is perhaps even better than the final boss theme, I've listened to that theme a lot, and despite being a short theme, I can't get enough of it, it's so great with the intense guitar, and that organ adds to the music, ''Principal Prettiness'' is an awesome theme that sounds jazzy and even a little epic, I like that bass...I can keep going. The opening song is very catchy, the game has an amazing soundtrack at times. The music was composed mostly by Akihi Motoyama and Mutsumi Ishimura, and what can I say? compared to Drive Girls, they definitely did a better job. The voice acting is great, for the most part, some characters are voiced by the person who has always voiced them, yes, Neptune is voiced by Melissa Fahn and Nepgear is voiced by Christine Marie Cabanos, for example, however, this is one of the first games where Vert is voiced by Carrie Keranen instead of Tara Platt, Carrie Keranen did a good job as Vert...during the events, at least. when you play as Vert in this game, her English voice sounds...more childish than it should be...Carrie Keranen also voices Rom...still, as I said, the voice acting is great, for the most part. The game doesn't have a full dub, and the fact that it's even more evident than in the other games is something that bothers me, I didn't like when I had to watch an event with Japanese voices despite the fact that I have chosen English voices in the menu.
Addictive: MegaTagmension is another game developed by Tamsoft (it's not really developed by Compile Heart, the game page is wrong), and the gameplay is similar to Hyperdimension Neptunia U, there are a few differences however, to change characters, you press the L, R, and circle buttons at the same time, while in Hyperdimension Neptunia U, you just press down on the D-pad, you can also press the R button to guard and not receive damage, or at least, receive less damage, in this game, in theory, you can use SP skills (R button + triangle, square, circle, or the X button) infinitely, since to use skills a small blue meter has to be full, and when you use a SP skill, the blue meter always fils again, quickly. You can also use powerful skills if a blue bar is filled to a certain point, any character can use an EXE Drive, but to use a Lily Special, you need to have two characters, and of course, that blue bar needs to be filled to a certain point, if you prefer you can also transform if you have... enough energy, let's say, and when you are transformed, that blue bar empties, if you have enough energy, you can also use an EXE Drive during a transformation but I think that this makes the transformation end, of course, the previous things apply if we assume that you start a mission with a normal form, and not the transformed state of a character (HDD form, for most characters), you can also use items during the game, unlike Hyperdimension Neptunia U, you can buy items that Compa sells in the Shop, including better equipment, healing items, for example, certainly make the missions easier. The game has more playable characters than Hyperdimension Neptunia U, it has the same playable characters and more, this time you can also play as Plutia, Peashy, Uzume Tennouboshi (introduced in Megadimension Neptunia VII), and a new character, Tamsoft, for a total of 14 playable characters if we count don't count the transformations as separate playable characters, that's really nice...unfortunately, MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune VS Zombies has moments of slowdown that affect the experience at times, on one hand, the gameplay is a little more complex than Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed and it has more playable characters, but on the other, it doesn't run as well. The game has multiplayer modes that I've never used, Hyperdimension Neptunia U is better as a single player game, that is something that must be mentioned.
Depth: The game is short, I think that you have to play the game with different characters if you want to see every event and CG image, it seems that it's possible to finish the game without seeing everyting, even so, the experience doesn't offer a lot, especially if you don't use the multiplayer modes.
Difficulty: The game is difficult at times, it's true that MegaTagmension is harder than Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online, also developed by Tamsoft, but still, there are easy battles and stages in the game. The final boss isn't difficult to defeat if you don't let your guard down and know how to dodge attacks.
Is MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune VS Zombies a better game than Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed? it depends, the game has more playable characters than Hyperdimension Neptunia U and the gameplay itself is a little more complex and, perhaps, fun, but the slowdown, not to mention less emphasis on single-player content affect the appreciation of the game, even so, I really like this game despite its flaws, if you are a Neptunia fan, you probably already have this game, if not...I won't tell you not to buy it, that's up to you. If you don't want to buy the game because it was slightly censored and the censorship upsets you, like me, I won't be mad, if you still buy the game despite the slight censorship...you may like it.
