Fire Emblem: Awakening   merf
Hey all! I figured that there's no time like the present to write a review for FE: Awakening, so I decided to go for it. ;)
Originally released in Japan on April 19th, 2012, Awakening took nearly a year to localize in the USA and exactly a year to localize in Europe. However, it's been well worth the wait. FE: A is a new game, following up 2 remakes of early games in the series. It introduces a few new features, such as the "Dual" system and "Pair Up" system. These are designed to create strong bonds between your units, which benefit you in combat. The Dual System allows a adjacent friendly unit to fight alongside another of your units. The Pair Up system works similarly to the Rescue function from previous games, with the only major difference being that Pairing Up your units actually benefits the stats of the primary unit. In addition, Pairing Up causes the Dual System to be put into effect.
When Pairing Up, support bonds come into play as well. In Fire Emblem: Awakening, supports return to the game. If bonded enough, compatible Male and Female Units will marry, and a new level will load into the game in which you will obtain the future child of this pair. I won't say much more, cuz spoilers n stuffs. ;) Children characters can marry, but will not have kids of their own.
Another exciting feature to this game is the return of the explorable world map. These can previously be found in FE: Sacred Stones, and FE: Gaiden. You can return to the locations of previous battles to access shops found therein, and the Risen (will explain later) or Merchants may pop up here as well. In addition, this is where you will meet any enemy teams obtained via either spotpass or streetpass. Finally, you have access to the Outrealm Gate from here, which hosts all DLC you have bought.
Other features in this game include the return of a customizable and playable Avatar, Special Skills, the Barracks (where you may obtain items, listen in on conversations, etc), and spotpass teams from previous games in the series.
Alright, now that we've got the formalities out of the way, let's dive in!
Graphics - For the most part, I honestly can't complain here. There are a few places where I feel like the developers got lazy, such as the lack of feet on the characters, but the rest of the graphics are great. The developers really went into detail on the characters responses to their health, to attacks, and to getting healed. Rather than the sprites from previous games, Awakening features a fluid, smooth attacking system. It's not just a part of the game, it's a pleasure to watch. Therefore, I have rated this as high as 8. I would rate it higher, but the few obvious lazy points in development take away from the overall quality.
Sound - As in all FE games that I've played, the sound is exceptionally relevant. Perhaps it's not perfect, but it's quite relevant to the scenario in the game as well as pleasurable background music. I've found myself just letting the game sit open on my desk as I work, to be playing the music. Honestly, FE is the only series I've ever considered doing that, and Awakening doesn't disappoint. I don't feel comfortable with rating this a full 10, but I feel a 9 is quite accurate.
Addictiveness - Let's just say that I played this through 3 times in the first 2 months after getting it, and leave it at that. Sound good? No? Aw. :P In all seriousness, this game is very addicting. I played through it no less than 4 times before putting it down, but recently I decided to start playing some more and got addicted all over again. There isn't one specific element that I keep coming back for, it's the combination of all of the various pieces of the game. That's the sign of a great game, if you ask me. I rate this as low as an 8, simply because I actually was able to pry myself away from it (albeit after 4 playthroughs). If you plan to get this game, expect to spend a lot of time on it. lol!
Story - Ah yes, the story. If you simplify the plot a lot, to it's core, it carries the same basic plot as many other FE games. You start off with a Jagen (pre-promoted unit that you get at the beginning of the game) who becomes obsolete quickly, a major protagonist rises before very long into the story, and you spend a while fighting bands of this protagonists minions until finally facing the protagonist itself. If you back away from that over-simplified view, however, this game has a quite intricate story-line.
In essence, the Fell Dragon Grima calls forth soldiers (named 'Risen'), which I assume to be flesh-covered portions of Grima's power. These are teleported around the two continents to wreak havoc upon the world. Any run-of-the-mill FE game would run through the usual gameplan of recruiting units from various battles to fight alongside you. However, in Awakening, there is another way to recruit allies. During the story, we learn that 'Marth' (Chrom's future daughter, Lucina) has come from an alternate future to aid your team in fighting off the beasts that destroyed her world. Also, there are various other characters that come from this other world as well, and can be recruited through compatible character marriage.
With all this bonus additions to the generic plot-line, I definitely feel confident in giving this game a solid 8 in story. There are ways it could have been improved, but I was quite impressed overall.
Depth - Though this was partially answered under the 'Story' section, I'll run through a few more things here. As previously mentioned, Marriage is a part of the game (and results in playable Children Characters). This not only has good support conversations, but also builds the stats of paired characters. Each child has a unique backstory, which you get to read into a bit during this game, and the depth here kinda blows me away. In addition, each character has the depth and uniqueness that I've come to expect from FE. Lastly, even the DLC maps have sufficient depth to their stories. I'm definitely impressed, and this gets a rare 10 from me.
Difficulty - This definitely isn't the most difficult FE, and I've heard it called the easiest one yet. However, that completely depends on how you play the game, and on what difficulty you're on. I've found that Hard Mode is quite easy, and many of my characters are sufficiently strong enough to solo many chapters in the game. However, this is mainly due to one of the DLC maps that I bought. Quite simply, this game can be a challenge, if you want it to be. It can also be a casual way to pass the time though. Take your pick, and you'll enjoy it either way. 6 from me, though that's assuming that I wouldn't abuse the DLC map and is considering my FE skillz. ;)
Overall - While probably not my favorite FE game, Awakening definitely is a strong contender for the position. There isn't really just one part of the game that stood out, they meld together to form an amazing game. In my opinion, that's what you want from a game. You don't want to look back and say 'The graphics were great, but the music was meh', right? Awakening won't disappoint, and certainly didn't disappoint me after over a year of anticipation. Overall, a solid 9. You'll love it, just as I have.
Thanks for reading! I'd love to hear any feedback you may have, whether positive or negative!

Amazing!!   The Star of Mus..
Alright! so to tell the truth this is my first Fire Emblem game. This is also my first review of any game, so I hope you like it. I was not really sure what to expect. So you can bet I was amazed when I saw the game's intro. Fair length movie style cut-scene with amazing music. I'm simply in awe of this game. I knew the 3ds had awesome capabilities for this kind of thing but wow! So first:
Graphics: 10
I found the graphics amazing. It really drew me in and combined with the other aspects of the game made me really glad I got it. I won't say much but every attack is shown as a cut-scene style show. They are not as fluid as the actual cut-scenes but still cool. I always choose to turn off the move shows for staff and dance attacks. But all other I leave on. All in all quite well done.
Sound: 9
I find the soundtrack addicting and fun to listen to. It has an alluring affect to those who listen to it. It trys to draw the player into the world that the game inhabits. And it succeeded, at least with me. I love this game and the sound is a prominent reason for it. During battle an uplifting and spurring music plays that adds to the battle. You can hear the cries of the fallen as they are struck down, which is an intresting touch. Also during battle and cut-scenes, both animated and read the lines areas, the caracters speak. During the animations they speak every word, while in the other parts only a snipet or sound is made.
Addictiveness: 10
I have already made three files so I think it's safe to say that I would play it again. Some parts, like in some games, I won't look forward to it, either cause it was hard or just simply annoying. Also their is a choice between normal, hard and lunatic difficulty levels as well as casual play for begginers where units respawn at the end of each battle and classic where if a unit dies they stay dead. This adds to the replay value. I still can't beat normal-casual mode... But overall this game has good replay-ability value.
Story: 10
I can't say much due to spoilers and such but I will say that it is a charming and fun story with several twists and unexpected turns all throughout. The characters stick with you and you will hate to see some die in battle. Luckily if you play on casual they come back... But it is still heart-breaking to see your favorite units fall. And the storyline makes you empathize with the characters both good and bad.
Depth: 10
The main storyline is long and hard, but there are also many side-chapters that get you more characters as you go. Some are accessed simply by getting farther in the main story or by doing certain things. I won't say what things due to spoilers but it is a long process but very rewarding to do. The more characters you have the more choices you have when you fight. Also like many RPG games their is a level system and also a class system such as mage, warrior and the like which also adds to the depth of the game.
Difficulty: 10
While it is a fun game and their is alot to it, the game is also quite challenging. It is one of the hardest games I have played.... Mainly cause the area of games I play is not normally difficult, but I welcome the challenge. The controls are easy being the game is on a hand-held. The real challenge comes from all the possiblitities the stem from the style of game. If either Chrom or your main character dies then you have to restart from a previous save file. Also if you can't remember the effect triangle for weapons or make a wrong move it can easily cost you a character.
Overall: 10
I have had alot of fun with this game. I give it a 10 overall because as a whole it impressed me and kept me wanting more. I now want to go back and play some previous games in the series. The graphics showed the amazing ability of the newer systems for being capable of movie style cut-scenes. The sound was amazing both compared to my usual area of games and others on the system and it definatelly met its mark. By far the story is one of my favorites out of most of the games I have played. It shows how friendship and the willingness to change ones fate can lead to great success. There is so much to do in the game that it makes for a very in-depth title and sets a very high bar for the franchise and the 3ds as a console. Even though it is hard it still gives a sense of "I can do this." It gives that challenge to those who want more then just a pretty character or a good story. You can find that in a book. No, this is an outstanding game and well worth the almost 40 dollars that I had to pay to get it.

Fire Emblem Awakening - A Review!   mlb789
I'm not going to pretend I've played the Fire Emblem series forever.  As a matter of fact, this was my first game in the series.  Seriously.  The only time I've played a different FE title is when I pulled one up on vizzed and played it for a little while.  However, that doesn't mean I don't know anything about how to play Fire Emblem.  From my experience, it isn't too much of a grind heavy game at least in the easier difficulties, but is more of a "don't do stupid things with your characters" game.  Does this mean that you somehow have to use logic in the game????
Graphics - 7.  I'll be completely honest, I like how this game is presented.  I like how fluid the cut scenes are and how the pictures look like actual pictures.  However, whenever you have a smaller top down view of the game, the graphics won't be as good.  Small sprites are never going to be perfect, and that's a flaw with many games, which is why few games have fantastic graphics.  However, if this game's graphics were graded solely based on how well the cinematic scenes played out, the game would receive stellar marks.  During my first couple plays of the game I would refuse to skip the cut scenes.  Overall, this game would benefit from slightly better graphics during actual game play, but the graphics elsewhere are nothing short of phenomenal.
Sound - 7.  I'm all for great soundtracks.  I really like how the soundtrack for FE plays out.  First off, it isn't all in your face with the music.  It's quite nice sometimes when you're playing and just hear the music and get into it.  However, Sound doesn't solely encompass the soundtrack of the game.  It also encompasses the smaller sounds in the games.  A gripe I have with the sound is the voice acting, or really, lack thereof.  You rarely get to hear a full strung out sentence except in cinematic cut scenes, and I think it would've been cool to have full sentence acting in the entire game, rather than the grunt or "Hey", etc.  Another thing that got to me was the level up sound.  I heard that sound enough while playing the game to the point where I could hardly take it anymore.  Thinking about it now actually causes me to cringe a little bit, believe it or not.  Overall though, the soundtrack makes up for those small things and then some.
Addictiveness - 10.  Recently, I've been playing this game a lot.  It's pulled me away from Smash Bros. for 3DS among other games, and that should really be a testament to how good this game is.  I enjoy beating this game multiple times through because it can be different when you play.  I can't really say anything bad about the addictiveness of this game unless you don't like a bunch of repetition, but I was able to overlook that in the game and still have fun.  Overall, I can't say anything bad from my perspective about the addictiveness.  I think this game perfects this category.
Story - 10.  It's still the same every time you play, but you have CHOICES!!!!  Or, if you think about it realistically and play the game enough, you have A SINGLE CHOICE!!!!!  It's less appealing when I put it that way, but it's still really interesting and it tests your morals a little.  I won't spoil any of the big parts of the story, but you play as a tactician unit with the Shepherds, which are basically the "guardians" of Ylisse, the main protagonist government of the game.  I recommend experiencing the story for yourself a few times and pick different choices just to see what happens through the game.  I'm sure that it will be fairly enjoyable for most.
Depth - 8.  It's the same base game every time.  There are only so many levels to play before it's over.  However, you can mix and match characters with the support system to get different in game results, download DLC and Spotpass updates to add more missions, and create little games for yourself to have tons of fun.  It definitely isn't the DEEPEST game there is out there, but you can sink many an hour into this game without being bored.
Difficulty - 4.  I've played a bit on all of the difficulties I have and if it's played right it isn't that hard to go through the game.  I occasionally bump into trouble but overall you can have a fun time casually playing this game.  If you really want a challenge, go into lunatic mode with classic and see how long you can last without loading off of a game over.  Besides that, however, it isn't too hard to learn and is fairly easy to relax with.
Overall - 8.4.  My score is an average of the first 5 aspects of the grading system.  This game is a blast to play and I would recommend this to those who either know the Fire Emblem games or want to try a new turn based strategy game.  If you pick this up without any knowledge of prior Fire Emblems like I did, I think you'll be able to have fun without having to deal with a huge learning curve.

THE BEST FE GAME YET!   loj11
Let me just say something before we get started; I LOVE FIRE EMBLEM!!! This was my first Fire Emblem game, and is still my favorite, even after the release of Fates and Heroes. This game has so much to offer, so lets go ahead and get into this!
Graphics: For the Nintendo 3DS, the graphics are stunning. They are the most realistic of any Fire Emblem game ever when battling, and during the story segments the anime art-style compliments the game's tone nicely. But the real kicker out of all of this are the fully-animated, 60FPS, CGI, anime-art style cutscenes! They are BEAUTIFUL!!! They add so much more emotion and depth to the story and characters. Just look up the cutscenes on Youtube; you'll be amazed; and it's on the 3DS! These are PS4 quality cutscenes!
Sound: The soundtrack is again, amazing, but this is to be expected from a Fire Emblem game. I like how when you are viewing the battlefield, it has a calmer, slower tune, but as soon as you enter combat, a more up-beat, action-oriented version of the same song picks up right where the other left off. My favorite track has to be "Conquest," which was actually so good it was carried over into the Fire Emblem: Fates sountrack.
Addictiveness: This game is very addictive. When I first played it, I made it to chapter 7 within 4 hours of playtime! There is a lot more to this game than it seems, but I will cover that in the "Depth" section.
Story: In this section I will quickly summarize the plot of the game. Be warned: there are spoilers ahead. The game begins with your avatar and the other main character and prince of Ylisse, Chrom, taking down a mysterious man named Validar. Before you defeat him, Validar uses the last of his power to force you into killing Chrom. Your avatar then awakens in a field with Chrom, and his younger sister, Lissa, standing over you. You realize that you have no memories of how you got there, or anything before Chrom woke you up. You then join Chrom's Shepherds: a group of warriors dedicated to keeping peace in Ylisse and the surrounding kingdoms. The reigning monarch of Ylisse, exalt Emmeryn approves, and you join the group. That night, a mysterious portal opens, and patchwork zombie-like creatures called Risen begin to attack. However, before the portal can close, another figure leaps through: a woman going by the name of Marth, which is also the name of the first exalt of Ylisse. After saving Lissa's life, Marth mysteriously disappears. The Shepherds then march to the neighboring kingdom of Regna Ferox to request support in suppressing the Risen. East Khan Flavia then explains that she is not in full power, the West Khan Basilio is. She then explains that the tournament to determine the next reigning Khan is the next day, and that if the Shepherds represent her in the tournament, she will grant the alliance. The next day, the West Khan's champion is revealed as none other than Marth, who wields the divine blade Falchion, which is the exact same sword that Chrom wields! After defeating Marth, she helps you prevent an attempt to assassinate Emmeryn by King Gangrel of Plegia, who wants a mystical relic called the Fire Emblem to eradicate the Ylissians as revenge for a war instigated by Emmeryn's father. Emmeryn sacrifices herself to protect the Fire Emblem, and Chrom slays Gangrel. Skip forward 2 years, and Chrom is married and has a baby daughter named Lucina. A new threat is revealed in the neighboring continent of Valm, which has been conquered by an emperor named Walhart, and he now seeks to conquer Ylisse, as well as Ferox and Plegia. On the way to defeat him, Chrom runs into Marth again. It is revealed that she is actually a version of Lucina from the future, where Grima, the fell dragon slain by the First Exalt, and that only by gathering the five gemstones to complete the Fire Emblem can Grima be stopped.
Wow. That was long. That isn't even the entire plot! But yeah. That's the story.
Depth: As shown above, the story offers so much depth it will take you at least 30 hours to complete the main story alone. There are also Paralouges, where after getting two units of your army married, you can recruit one of their children, who traveled back with Lucina to prevent Grima's resurrection. There are also the DLC maps, in which you can recruit Enhairji, which are clones of characters from previous Fire Emblem Games.
Difficulty: In traditional Fire Emblem style, there are the Normal, Hard, and Lunatic difficulties, but there is also the new Casual mode, where units don't die permaneantly

Comments for Fire Emblem: Awakening

I'm kinda experienced. I've played Awakening, Binding Blade, Blazing Sword, Sacred Stones and Gaiden, but I've seen gameplay of Radiant Dawn.
