Doom 3 BFG Edition Review by: Mynamescox44 - 9/10

Doom 3 BFG Edition
Doom 3 BFG Edition for the PS3 is one of the best First Person Shooter titles I've played to date. Every thing that this game offers is very well done, and any fan of the genre should be able to find plenty in this title to appreciate. All of the combat is fast, suspenseful, and rewards precision in both your skill for aiming, as well as maneuverability. The enemies in the game are all designed really well, and the capabilities they have balance out the difficulty extremely well. The game also provides a near perfect balance of suspense, jump scares, and ambiance to always keep you on the edge of your seat waiting for what could possibly happen next. Unlike the original release of Doom 3, the BFG Edition also features a flash light built into your armor, meaning you don't need to equip your flash light like you would a weapon to see in the dark ( and you use the flash light A LOT in this game lol ). The game features online multi-player, as well as also including the original Doom and Doom 2 titles that made the franchise so iconic in the world of gaming. It also comes with two different forms of DLC, which include The Lost Mission ( an alternative story that takes place in the same world, only just before and / or during the actual campaign ) and Resurrection of Evil ( which is almost like a mini-sequel that wraps up every thing the original campaign did not quite bring to a close ). Enough rambling, on to the review!

Graphics 9 / 10 -- Thankfully, the BFG Edition took every thing that was great about the original title, and improved on it immensely. All of the textures and effects in the game have been completely polished and remastered for this version, and every thing looks fantastic. My one complaint here would be that the ( human ) characters don't quite have the same realistic look that the foes in the game do, but seeing how they only appear in short cut scenes that don't occur all that often, it's something that can be easily over looked. On the bright side, there's pretty much every thing else the game has to offer visually. All of the foes, down to the "zombie" like humans who were turned into what ever they are now, look fantastic down to the smallest detail. One of the best things about them is in the darkness, you can still see the glow of the whites of their eyes, which will scare the crap out of you if you're not expecting it lol. All of the non-human foes look just as great, from the shoulder mounted rocket-launcher wielding skeleton, to the round ball shaped flying reptile heads that shoot fire balls at you. The environments look great, and all of the textures in it look very realistic. You really get the feel for what a space station on the surface or subterranean levels of Mars would look like. In a few sections, you actually get the roam the planets exposed surface, and the landscape looks beautiful, although you'll be too preoccupied with conserving oxygen and / or fighting for your life to really take the time to notice. I mean every thing down to each grated sheet of metal used in the facility looks amazing. The effects look great too, including every thing from the sparks of electricity from a torn wire, or the fire( ? ) some of the foes can throw, or some times more like belch, at you. The effects for the various weapons are cool too, especially the plasma gun and the physics associated with it's ammunition.

Sound 8 / 10 -- Most of the audio for the game is really awesome, though I will admit for the sake of ambiance a lot of the game's back ground tracks are either extremely quiet or some times non existent. Don't get me wrong, when things get intense, the sound track suits the mood perfectly, but in between said times, it can be very low-key to say the least. Some of the better tracks feature a lot of Rock type music, generally with a lot of guitars, almost like the kind you would hear in an action film. At the same time, the music this game has is also very unique, making it easily distinguishable from any other game sound track out there. To make up for the lack of consistently good music, the game has some of the best sound effects I've ever heard, and makes constant use of them. All of the foes in the game have their own signature cry, and unless they are intentionally being quiet for an ambush, you can almost always hear them around you. The "zombie" grunts moan like you would expect, and the more hellish creatures generally have some thing along the lines of a high pitched shriek. I love the fact that a lot of the time the game will constantly sound out the enemies cries before they ever actually make an appearance. It lets you know some thing is going to happen, you just have no idea where or when they will show up, and a few times the enemies won't even make an appearance after building you up with the noises they make off in the distance. The voice acting is just ok for the most part, excluding the main antagonist. The main antagonist plays a major role later in the game, with him speaking very frequently ( in a way as if you were hearing him over a PA system ), letting you know just how deep in trouble you really are. He also has his signature "evil laugh" that plays any time things aren't exactly going your way. Overall the audio is very good, and sets the tone perfectly through out the game.

Addictiveness 8 / 10 -- This score may be a tad generous, but if you really love First Person Shooter titles, then it should be about right. Also keep in mind scores such as this one or Depth also include the fact Doom and Doom 2 are included on the disc, as well as the DLC / add-ons. I found this game to be extremely fun to play, especially considering the Horror / Suspense aspects along side the main genre. All of the combat is based on quickly darting and / or dodging your foes, while having a steady hand to aim with. This is not one of those shooters where the control scheme is all about taking cover and / or avoiding being hit at all costs. It is also not essential to do so, unless you're playing on the hardest difficulty levels. Another trait about this game that's different from many FPS titles is that there's no option to zoom in when aiming. You're simply given a cross-hair ( or not if you want to turn it off for extra difficulty ), and you have to get by with it only. Thankfully there isn't any "spread" when firing from the hip, excluding the shotgun's buckshot of course. The enemies are all very well designed and balanced in terms of game play, and the varying combinations always keep things fresh and interesting. I was actually a little surprised with how many different kinds of enemies you encounter as the game progresses, in a good way of course. There's also a great selection of weapons to choose from, offering you plenty of different options and ways to go about dispatching your foes. I always found it extremely fun to bank grenades around corners, obliterating foes while they can't even see me lol. Another great thing about the game play is the fact TONS of enemies will ambush you by surprise. It could be from a vent in the wall, a steel grate across the ceiling, from under a set of steps, or even just a patch of darkness in a little concave recess along a hallway. Sometimes there are even hidden doors with enemies behind them that only open when you approach very close, which also tended to be the ones that always caught me the most off guard. And of course there's the signature BFG-9000 ( Big F-ing Gun ) which is a "blast" to use and literally disintegrate your foes with.

Story 6 / 10 -- Like with a lot of games in the genre, the story here is some what lacking. Over all it's not necessarily a bad story, it just doesn't receive a lot of focus from the developers since it's not the reason most gamers would play a FPS title any way. As any one who knows any thing about Doom realizes, things always "go to Hell" in the story of these titles, and this one is no different. The story follows the lines of "You are a marine dispatched as security for a private base used for research / mining purposes on the surface of Mars. During the digs, the scientists come across these large tablets from an ancient civilization. Using the information on the tablets by using a super computer to translate the language on them, they find a way to open a portal to Hell, albeit unintentionally since they didn't actually realize where the portal went to. Once the portal was opened, the influence of hell spilled out into the facility, affecting every one there which included driving them mad or even many of the people being possessed. On top of this, the portal was designed in a way that would allow humans to pass through for the purpose of an expedition, but this also allowed the minions of Hell to make their way into our plane of existence, flooding the base with all manner of their kind. Since you're a trained soldier, you're boss tries to guide you through the process of sending out an S.O.S. for help and reinforcements, as well as an evacuation for whomever may still be alive." That's about the best I can sum it up with out actually spoiling any thing. There's really nothing special to say about the story here. It has your typical twists, though none of them are really note-worthy in any way. Over all the story is pretty mediocre as well as the presentation of it, but again, that's not the reason you'll want to play this game in the first place.

Depth 8 / 10 -- The game itself isn't too long, but it does have more content than many FPS titles I've played. Since it also includes all the extra games and DLC, it does give you a ton of extra stuff to do out side of the main campaign which is nice. I'd say the core game offers about 5 or 6 to 20 hours of game play depending on your pace and how thorough you are in searching for every thing. The game has a PDA that is used as your menu, and finding certain people's PDA through out the game will grant you access to restricted areas, a lot of which are required to progress. The game has tons of little documents to find along the way, which provide insight into the story and how the people in the game's world were affected by the events that took place. A lot of these documents have locker combinations that will provide a cache of supplies for you to use, or every so often early access to a new weapon. For a lot of the significant things in the game's world, there are even video documents that thoroughly explain what it is and / or how it works, such as the base you are currently on, a particle accelerator found in the game, or even the BFG it self. The game features a large selection of weapons to choose from, including but not limited to a pistol, shotgun, an automatic assault rifle, an automatic plasma rifle, or even a rocket launcher. There isn't hardly any thing to do in terms of collectibles or extras, but the extra games / content provide a great incentive in terms of depth. The DLC provides an extra 10 + hours of game play, on top of the original Doom and Doom 2 games which are fairly large themselves from what I recall.

Difficulty 8 / 10 -- Over all I really found the difficulty of the game to be very well balanced, especially in it's progression as the game went on. Nothing was ever overly difficult, but at the same time, the game would constantly challenge you to be at your very best. The game would start easy enough, as it should, fighting slow enemies that can only use melee attacks. Then it would throw a tougher version of that same enemy in, and not long after, more and more variations of stronger foes for you to deal with all in perfect queue. The enemies later in the game are either massive and deal huge amounts of damage, or small and extremely quick generally attacking in swarms and / or hordes, often in combinations with other enemies as well. The bosses are for the most part really challenging, as they not only attack you in ways that are tough to avoid, but also deal great amounts of damage when their attacks land. One particular boss is a human that was fused with a military tank, and his offensive capabilities are staggering. The game offers plenty of supplies to keep you stocked along the way, but it should also be noted that once all of these things are picked up or used ( such as a wall mounted healing station, as these have a limited number of total health points that they can restore ), they do not re-spawn or replenish in any way. Although they come in good amounts, they are also generally spaced out, so making sure you have enough ammo and health at all times is crucial, since you never really know when more will be available. There is a lot of shadows / darkness through out the game, so making good use of your flash light is also essential. Your flash light works on a battery that slowly depletes while in use, and recharges very slightly faster than the speed in which it would deplete. The environments often have exploding barrels or other miscellaneous items that can either be used to your advantage, or your down fall. Most every enemy projectile will also set these objects off, so you must always be aware of what's around you, not only because of this, but also the enemies who could be lurking around any given corner. Over all, if you keep your head cool, stay aware of your surroundings, and get the hang of aiming quickly and efficiently, the game shouldn't provide any challenge you can't conquer.

Overall 9 / 10 -- I highly recommend this game to any one who enjoys the FPS genre in the slightest, especially if you also enjoy dark / gory themes and some really good jump scares. The game has an amazing ambiance to it that always keeps you on edge, and pretty much every thing the game tries to do, it does well. I would certainly say this game lives up to the title Doom, and does the franchise justice continuing it's legacy.

Hope you enjoyed the review :)
