The purpose of this hack was to make the original Mega Man IV much easier for gamers that find games that aren’t too incredibly tough more enjoyable.

Key changes:

• Every special weapon uses only 1 bar each (Charged Pharoah Shot still consumes 2 bars)
• Every boss takes considerably more damage
• All bottomless pits and spikes are eliminated or arranged to be far less hazardous
• Small Capsules refuel 5 units and Large Capsules refuel 15 units for both Life and Weapons
• More 1-Ups and Energy Tanks are available
• Mega Man can hold more lives and Energy Tanks in reserve (the game displays weird digits when the player has more than nine, but does have more than nine)

Simple Mega Man 4 hack
Mega Man 4came out in 1991 and oh how I remember. I remember getting this game when I was a lot younger. Mega Man 4, was amazing it had everything a great game had. I
played Mega Man 4 a lot and here it is 25 years later and I still play Mega Man
4 a lot. In fact, Mega Man 4 is often regarded as one of the NES top games.
Many game experts have ranked it in the top 100 of greatest NES games of all
time. After playing the game it is easy to see why it was such a huge hit. With
a game like that being popular it should be no surprised that several hacks
have been made of Mega Man 4. I will be focusing on the hack titled Mega Man 4
Simple Hack. Basically, it is an easier version of Mega Man 4. Thus, I will be
reviewing this hack and comparing it to the original game.

Story: 9

The story in this hack was left unchanged from the original game. Mega Man has
defeated Dr. Wily’s attempt of world domination three times. Thus the world was
at peace once again. Dr. Wily had not been heard from in a while. Suddenly
robots start going berserk causing destruction among the world. Suddenly a new
Scientists Dr. Cossack appears and explains how he was tired of being ignored
and its time the world recognizes he is a true genius. Cossack has sent 8 new
robots to challenge Mega Man to a duel. So, Dr. Light sends Mega Man out to get
to the bottom of this. Just who is Dr. Cossack is he really a bad guy or is
somebody pulling his strings. Mega Man heads out to find the answers and save
the world again.

Okay the original plot did not need to be changed because it was that great.
Mega Man 4 tried to bring something new to the Mega Man series. This is the
first plot that offered a bit of mystery and suspense. You don’t find out who
really is the bad guy till later in the game. I think that is what Capcom was aiming at and it showed.  To me that shows a high level of creativity. Since the plot was left unchanged I give it a rock solid score of 9 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls: 9

The graphics in this game are amazing then again Mega Man 4 had some of the
best graphics at its time. Mega Man 4’s graphics really showed what the NES was
capable of. So it was great to see the makers of this game did not change the
graphics. Now, the makers of this hack did change some of the sprite colors. In
this hack Mega Man when using robot masters weapons is the color of the robot
masters. That was a nice touch I really liked that. Also the stage layouts have
been changed but that was not bad at all though it may not have been needed. I
will go into more detail on that subject later on in the review. Other than
those changes the graphics remain the same.

For this to be a hack the controls are very smooth. They are not changed from
Mega Man 4. Mega Man 4 had some of the best controls for an NES game. Mega Man
3, 5, and Mario Brothers 2 as well as 3 also had very smooth controls. Not one
time did I feel like I was fighting with the controls. I have played some hacks
were I felt like I was fighting against the controls and it could be irritating
at times. I was glad they didn’t change the controls in this hack. Thus, since
they left the controls the same I give the graphics and controls a 9
out of 10.

Sound: 10

The sound in this game is amazing. The music is what really drives the rating
up in this game. Of the NES Mega Man games, I think 4, 5, and 3 had some of the
best soundtracks. A lot of the music is face paced and very upbeat. The songs
that are not face paced are so relaxing. In fact, the music is so groovy that
you will want to pause the game and listen to the music. The downside is you
can forget you have to play the game or you could get distracted to the music
and accidently die in this game. Yeah it is that good. The other sounds in this
hack are awesome. Mega Man 4 introduced the charged shot and its sound lets you
know your shots are doing damage. The weapon sounds have the same effect. The
sounds the enemy’s shots let you know they mean business. I was so glad they
did not change the sound in this game as they did not need to. I give the sound
a perfect 10 out of 10 doesn’t get much better than this.

Replay Value: 8

I really had fun playing this game. As I have stated I played Mega Man 4 a lot
and still like to play the original game. So I was curious to see how fun
playing a hack would be. Let me tell you I was not disappointed. Mega Man 4 Simple
is a great game to play due to the graphics, controls, sound and depth. I have
played this hack a lot. I think anybody who plays this game will end up playing
it multiple times just like how the original game made it hard to put down or
turn off.  At the end of the day I give this version a good score of 8 out of 10. 

Depth: 9

Mega Man 4 like most Mega Man games had a high level of depth. Mega Man games
are infamous for their depth. Mega Man 4 had very long levels, secrets, and
hidden rooms to find. Then after you beat the Robot Masters you had a fortress
stage and then another fortress stage to conquer. So did the makers of Mega Man
4 Simple change anything? The answer no they didn’t. The secrets rooms, items
to find and long stage levels are still there. It will take a while to beat the
hack just like it would take a while to master the original game. So it should be no surprise like most Mega Man games that the depth rating is very high. I give this game a depth rating of 9 out of 10. 

Difficulty 4

If Mega Man 4 simple suffers in anyway it’s because of the difficulty. Mega Man
4 could really bury you at times. In the original game the difficulty would
probably be a 9 or a 10. The original game: the robot masters were durable
enemies including bosses would move fast, enemies would gang up on you, there
were lots of spikes, lots of pits, long stages, the charged shots would take a
few seconds to fully charge, the layouts made navigation and boss battles very
difficult as a result you would die a lot in the original game.

In this game, all of that has been watered down. The layouts are not a factor
in this game as they were in the original version. The enemies as well as
bosses don’t move as fast in this game like they did in the original. The Robot
Masters are less durable. A charged shot will drain 25% percent of their
health. If you use their weaknesses against them it does about 30% of damage to
their health bar. In addition, the game is very giving on Energy Tanks. The makers
of this hack have placed more Energy Tanks in this game then the original
version had. Moreover, if you have not played a Mega Man game before you could
probably conquer a few stages before you died in this hack unlike the original
game. To make the game easier the makers of this hack have removed 90% of the
pits and spikes. A lot of the spikes were taken out and the pits are now
covered.

I give the difficulty a 4 out of 10. So you may be asking yourself why do I not
give the difficulty a lower rating? The answer enemy placement can still be a
factor in this game. One thing that has not changed is the enemy placement.
Enemies can still gang up on you. Even if they are less durable strength in
numbers can still drain your health bar. So it is possible to still die due to
the enemy placement. Also not all of the spikes and pits were removed. There
are still a few so if you are  not careful you could slip up. Still, at the end of the day this game is only slightly difficult at best. So 4 out of 10 sounds about right.

Overall rating: 9

Mega Man 4 hack is a very good hack to play. I have played some hacks that you
could tell they were hacks and it showed. That is not the case in this one. I
think a lot of gamers would enjoy this game. The difficulty being watered down
might disappoint some gamers especially those that like challenges. But it is
important to remember this hack was created to be a simple and easy version of
Mega Man 4.  This hack has a lot of good things going for it. Still, this game did have a few minor issues. Before I get into the negatives and they are minor I will begin with the positives.

Mega Man 4 Simple with the exception of the difficulty has a lot of things a
good quality game has. The graphics are just amazing and the makers of this
game did a good job with the sprites even though they were changed. The
controls are very smooth. It is easy to forget one is playing a hack when
playing this game that is how good of a job the makers of this game did. The
sound is amazing and as I stated you can really get into the groovy music. The
depth is typical of most Mega Man games: long, secrets, special items, and
several fortress stages.

The negatives in this game and I want to reiterate they are very minor. The
main thing is the difficulty. To some gamers the watered difficulty would not
bother them and be a good thing. But some gamers, like me, like games that
challenge you. I understand and get it the makers of this game were trying to
make Mega Man 4 very easy and it shows. But, did they really have to change the
layouts. I mean it is not that big of a deal. Still, the game is easy that
changing the layouts may not have been necessary.  Another thing that was probably not necessary was how the buster and weapons damage the boss. As I stated a charged shot does 25% of damage to bosses and weaknesses do 30% damage. To me it seems the
weapons are way overpowered in this game. I personally think the makers could
have made a charged shot do 4 bars of damage which would be about 14% and a
weakness doing 6 bars of damage about 16% of damage. That would have made the
fights still easy but at the same time not seem overpowered.  Also, slowing the bosses down may or may not have been needed.  

Like I said though these issues are minor so at the end of the day I give Mega
Man 4 Simple a solid 9 out of 10. Even with the lack of difficulty this game
has a lot going for it due to reasons I mentioned above.  It is just that good. So would I recommend this game. By all means I would recommend this game. Mega Man 4 Simple can be solid gold just like Mega Man 4 (Original Version) was and still is. Mega Man 4
simple would be a great game for a beginner. It would be great to introduce
somebody to Mega Man too. The original game could be brutal in difficulty at
times. This game would give new gamers time to get a feel for Mega Man, the
controls and an idea on what a Mega Man game is like minus the difficulty. Also
this game would be great for somebody that needs a fun game to play but might
be stressed due to the daily struggles of life. This game would give gamers a
chance to wind down and relax without getting irritated. Even if you are like
me and are a gamer that likes a challenge in the terms of creativity, reflexes,
timing, skill and luck to beat this game can still be fun. I like to be
challenged but I still had a great time playing this game. Despite the few
negatives I feel like the makers of this game did a good overall job and it
really shows they invested time in making this game. So I hope you take time to
enjoy this game like I did because it is fun as well as groovy.
