Mega Man 5 - Ridley X Hack 2 Review by: tornadocam - 8.5/10

Mega Man 5 take 2
Time to review another hack of Mega Man 5. This one' is Mega Man 5 Ridley Hack 2. This is a hack of Mega Man 5. Mega Man 5 was a popular Nintendo game. It often is ranked in the top 100 of NES games of all time. So it should be no surprise a lot of hacks have been made of this game. I will be comparing this hack to other MM 5 hacks as well as the original game.

Story: 9

So far this version has kept the same story line as the original. Mega Man has defeated Dr. Wily several times in the past and the world is at peace. Suddenly, a new Robot Army is bent on destroying the world. Dr. Light is kidnapped during the latest attack. So just who is behind all this destruction? Mega Man sees a yellow scarf floating down that belongs to his brother Protoman. Mega Man heads out to get to the bottom of this. Has his brother turned bad and is it really him? Or is a familiar foe at it again? Okay, I really liked the original story because it offered mystery, suspense, and the plot twist did not occur till late in the game. I really like story lines like that. So since this version did not change a thing. I give it a solid 9 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls: 8

The Graphics are nicely done and cleaned up some of the flaws the first Ridley Hack of MM 5 had. The backgrounds are more colorful then the previous hack. I also think the colors blend in nicely to the stages. The stage layouts have been changed. The sprites are so much better then the first Ridley hack of this game. The lags that occurred in MM5 Ridley Hack 1 have been fixed. I did not notice a lag at all while I was playing this game. However, there is a minor flaw with the graphics. There is a strange glitch in one of the stages. It was kind of odd. In this particular stage one of the enemies just vanished and then other enemies appeared in bunches. I thought it was a one time thing but that particular stage kept doing it. It is a minor flaw but if your not careful it will cause to get hit or fall into a pit.

The controls are so much better than the first Ridley hack of this game. They are very good maybe not quite as good as the original game. The original game was just special in its own way so it would be hard to top that. But the controls in this game are nicely done. Unlike the previous hack of this game I did not feel like I was fighting against the controls. So, the glitch brings the rating down just a little bit. Overall I will give the graphics and controls an 8 out of 10.

Sound: 10

The Sound was left unchanged from the original game. The Robot Masters still have their original themes. Mega Man 5 had a very good soundtrack that would make you just want to pause the game and listen to the music. Mega Man buster still sounds like a cannon ball like it did in the first game letting you know your shots are doing damage. Enemies shots still sound powerful to let you know they mean business. Sounds do not get much better than this in a video game. Since nothing was changed I give the sound a perfect 10 out of 10.

Replay Value: 8

I find myself playing this version more than I do Ridley Hack I of MM5. The first Ridley hack of Mega Man 5 had a few flaws mainly dealing with the controls and lags. It was a fun game to play but one you could get frustrated at in the wrong way. This one does not have any of those problems. I don't play this version as much as I do the original because as I stated the original is just special in its own way. Still, this is a solid game and I had fun playing it. It is one I will certainly play again. So I give the replay value an 8 out of 10.

Depth: 9

Mega Man games are known for their high depth. This version is no exception. This game has lots of depth to it. First of all the stages have been extended and are longer then the original game. This means its going to take a while to master a stage. In one stage I went 10 minutes just to reach the halfway mark. Also just like the original game there are secret rooms to explore and items to collect. Almost all of the stages require a revisiting to get everything. I like games that have a lot of depth to them. It really drives up the replay value and makes them more enjoyable to play. So I was glad to see that the maker of this game did not cut the depth back like I have seen in some hacks. Thus, I give the depth a rating of 9 out of 10.

Difficulty; 10

The difficulty of this game is just brutal I mean really brutal. I died more times in this game then I did the original and the first Ridley Hack of Mega Man 5.

The game is difficult and brutal. However, all the difficulty is for the right reasons. The previous Ridley Hack of MM5 was difficult but some of it was due to the wrong reasons mainly due to the controls. This version will just bury you. Yeah if your not a veteran of Mega Man games then you probably will not want to take on this game.

First of all the game is difficult due to the stages being extended. It takes a long time to get to the check way or midpoint. As I mentioned one stage I played through it for 10 minutes then died and only found out I had just cleared the midpoint. So yeah, beating the stages requires time and you have to go pretty far. Second, The enemies will just gang up on you. It is so easy to be surrounded and get hit. Enemies shots do more damage than the original game. I think getting shot by an enemy does 20% damage ouch. Due to how enemies gang up on you, you can find yourself in a jam. Third, some enemies are immune to the Mega Man Buster. Enemies that could be taken out with a charged shot in the original game now have bullet proof armor. It takes a special weapon to take them out. Often times these enemies are grouped in numbers. Moreover, the Robot masters in this game are brutal they have been sped up and given more attacks. Also, the pits and spikes are in bunches in this game. It is so easy to fall into a pit or get knocked into one as well as land on death spikes. Finally, the special items are difficult to reach often requiring special weapons and tools to get to them. You didn't think it was going to be easy did you ?

As difficult as this game is I actually enjoyed it. I like games that really challenge you and this one does that. This game test  your reflexes, skills, creativity, and problem solving skills. I will also be honest and admit sometimes beating a stage requires lots of luck. These are the right reason a game is difficult. Some games are difficult for the wrong reasons due to lags, graphic issues, and control issues. The only difficulty that is for the wrong reason is the glitch in one of the stages I mentioned. I do not know what triggers the glitch. But when it occurs 1 enemy vanishes then its like 6 more show up. That will get you hit, or cause you to get killed. Still, due to the extreme difficulty of this game I give it a 10 out of 10.

Overall Rating 8.5

Mega Man 5 Ridley Hack II was better than MM5 Ridley Hack I in so many ways. Now, this game is not sharp like the original. The original game was almost perfect that it would be hard to top the original. Still, this is a very nicely done game. Before I get into the few negatives I will start with the positives.

This version as stated cleaned up the problems the first Ridley Hack had of Mega Man 5. The first version was not a horrible version and it was mostly good. But, its main problems were the lags and control problems. This game does not have any lags in that I noticed. Also the controls were more smooth and resembled the original MM 5's controls. That was a huge plus to see and I was glad some of those problems were corrected. Second, I really liked how the story and sound were not changed. I have played some hacks were the story and sound was just bad. The graphics and stage layouts being changed is very nicely done. In fact, one could forget they were playing a hack. I think whoever made this version was trying to make players feel like they were playing a different game and not just a hack. The graphics and controls really show creativity and that the maker or makers put time into it. I also like how the depth and stages have been extended. I like stages that take awhile to master. It makes conquering them feel like an accomplishment. The difficulty seems about right if you like difficult games.

Now for the negatives. That glitch that occurs can cause a few problems. It can cause you to get knocked into a pit and if you are low on health when the glitch occurs bye bye. So yeah, getting around that glitch is tough. The bad point is when the glitch occurs it is not even during the halfway mark so if you die during the glitch you have to start all over again. I wonder why the glitch occurs. It could be just one of those things that just happens. Mega Man 2 had a glitch in it though not like that. Mega Man 3 also had a glitch were you could get Rush Jet without beating the actual boss. The thing is those glitches were fun and you could do funny things with them. I wonder if this glitch that occurs in this game is due to a software issue. It makes me wonder was the maker of this game using old software or were they using a mix.

Remember how I said the difficulty was about right. Well its a double edge sword and here is were I'm going with this. This is a game that you do not want to start somebody new to Mega Man on. If your a player who gets really frustrated easy then this game probably is not for you. In this game you will die a lot no matter how good you are. As I mentioned this game just buries you. If your like me and like games that offer a challenge then its a plus. But if you think this game is going to be like the original then think again. So yeah some players may be turned off from this game due to the extreme difficulty.

Overall, I think this was a nicely done game and it seemed to fix the problems the previous version had. I would recommend this game if you are a veteran of mega man games and like games that challenge you. However, if your new to Mega Man I would recommend you play the original Mega Man 5 to get used to how Mega Man games work. The original game is not too difficult and is often a good starting game for new players.
