New Ghostbusters II Review by: rcarter2 - 7.5/10

Who you gonna call?
I remember back when I was a kid and I LOVED the Ghostbusters movies. When I saw the game for Ghostbusters on NES, I was as excited as Slimer at an all you can eat buffet. Much to my despair, my excitement died within 3 to 4 minutes playing that cheap game. They didn't even try to improve it from the Atari version. So when I saw the original Ghostbusters II game for NES, I had low expectations. It was definitely an improvement, but still just not up to par. So when I saw this game, I was prepared for about the same. However, this game completely took me by surprise. This, in my opinion, was the first Ghostbusters game to get it right. This is one of those hidden gems that is absolutely worth playing.

Graphics: 8
Unlike the Ghostbuster games before this one which were mainly side scrollers, this is an above screen view game. In all honesty, the graphics are nothing particularly special when compared to other NES games. It is by no means bad, but there are certainly other NES games out there that are of better quality. But for an above view NES game, they did a pretty decent job. The characters are done well enough that if you are familiar with the movies (or the cartoon series), you can tell exactly which Ghostbuster character you are playing. Not only that, you will likely recognize quite a few of the ghosts in the game from the movie. I must say though, they did a pretty good job with some of the bosses. The ones that really stand out for me are the Scoleri brothers at the end of the very first level. They are probably the most detailed sprites int he game, and they look like a pretty perfect 8-bit copy of the ghosts in the movie. Now, off the sprites and onto the background/environment. This is where the score got bumped from mediocre to fairly decent. The developers knew that what makes a game's graphics stand out is details details details. For example, the first level takes place in a courthouse that has been completely ransacked by the ghosts. Even without seeing the movie, you have a good idea of what the building is. They cared enough to put in tears in the carpets, little chips n the wooden chairs, and various papers scattered all around the place. Even in a pretty cartoonish environment, they managed to give each level the appropriate spook vibe to them. Especially the underground subway level that is cracked, dark, and flowing with evil pink slime. Fans of the movie will have no problem recognizing the setting of each level. Those who are not will still get a pretty good idea.

Sound: 6
I always split sound up into 2 categories. Music and sound effects. Starting with the sound, it is not too shabby. Gotta get the obvious out of the way. It wouldn't be a Ghostbusters game without a level with the signature "Who you gonna call?" theme, so that is exactly what you get right from the get-go. But unlike the previous games, that isn't the only thing you get level after level. The developers actually bothered to give you some variety, and they do fit the levels nicely. For example, the subway level is fairly eerie. The boss music is very appropriate. Granted, nothing particularly memorable, but fitting. Could definitely be better. As for the sound, this is where the majority of the point docking came from. At first, the shrieking laughter of some of the ghosts, the high pitch of your proton packs, etc is pretty cool. But it doesn't take long after the constant repetition of those sound effects just become annoying screeching. The other sound effects are all right. But they are very overpowered by those 2 things. If they did better in the sound effects department, that alone would just make the game even better.

Addictiveness: 7
The quality of this game is pretty great, in my opinion. It has a good story, it flows pretty well, and the gameplay is fun. You get to go into room after room capturing every ghost you find until you do battle with the boss at the end. Pretty cut and dry and all the basic stuff you need for a good game. However, I admit that it can get a bit tedious. The gameplay itself does get repetitive after a while. Luckily, the enemies do get more challenging and numerous to keep it challenging, but still not enough variety for me. Because of that, the replay value isn't as high as I would like it. The addictive part of the game is challenging yourself to complete it. It can give you quite a challenge. But once you get through it, it isn't so hard anymore. I found that I have to give myself quite a long time before I can play through it again.

Story: 7
If you know the movie, you know the story. It is close to the end of the millenium, which turns out to be the prophesied day of the Scourge of Carpathia. Vigo the Carpethian is growing power by this pink slime running through the sewers of New York City. This slime feeds off of negative vibes. What better place to absorb hatred, anger, and negativity than New York? On News Years Day, Vigo needs a human child to possess. Ghostbuster Peter's ex girlfriend's child is the one chosen to be taken by Vigo. It is up to the Ghostbusters to save the world from certain doom. The good thing about this game is that the levels follow the events of the game almost to the T. However, you don't get the whole story I just narrated without seeing the movie. There really is not much to the storytelling in the game itself. So without prior knowledge of the story, the levels and events seem somewhat random and unexplained.

Depth: 7
As far as overall depth goes, it gets a slightly above mediocre. The gameplay is actually kind of creative. You pick 2 Ghostbusters to control. The first pick is your main one that you control. This one holds the proton pack weapon for catching ghosts. You partner follows you around all the time. When you catch a ghost, on push of a button has your partner toss the trap under the ghost to lock it up for good. I really love the idea. It give me a better feel of how they did it in the movie than the previous games did. They made each level more than long enough, so it isn't so crazy and hectic. They give more than a fair share of variety with the enemies. Each level holds unique challenges. The big issues are the lack of storytelling in the game. I prefer to not have to have seen the movie to know what is going on. Also, they could have spiced up the game play to make it not so repetitive. Some cool powerups would have been a fantastic way to go for this game. Just that little extra could have made this an absolutely amazing game.

Difficulty: 6
I love difficulty. Granted, it can't be due to faulty controls.  This game has very crisp controlling, but it can still give you quite a hassle. It didn't take me terribly long, but I definitely did not finish on my first attempt. This is one of those games where you just get farther and farther each time. Overcoming the new attack styles of the many new enemies in each level is what will get you here. So this got a decent rating in difficulty. However, once you get a handle of each enemy, this game is pretty much a snap to get through. There are a few parts that still can knock me down a peg, but nothing too hard. I think my beef with the difficulty is the bosses. They are actually easier than the levels. Especially when it is pretty much the exact same mechanism to catch them as the regular enemies. This would have been a lot better if they made the bosses have unique ways in capturing. Make us think a little, why don't you?!

Overall: 7.5
Now, if I averaged the scores in the categories, it would be a 6.9. But that doesn't really reflect my personal feelings for this games overall rating. There is just something about this game that when I play it, I am having fun. It is fast paced, fairly challenging, energetic, and it really reminds me so much of the movie. They did a great job at capturing the film in a game. If you liked the movie, I strongly suggest you give this game a whirl. If you didn't, the game didn't really tell the story in much detail, so you can focus only on the game itself without thinking about the film. Win win for both sides. As stated, this is a hidden gem and it is a shame that the previous games likely made people not give this one a try. It needs recognition.
