Mega Man 5 - Advanced Edition Review by: tornadocam - 8.2/10

Mega Man 5 Advanced
Mega Man 5 came out in 1992. I remember when I got the original version and it was fun. It was one of the last hits for the regular NES. Mega Man 5 is a great game and a popular one. Several gaming experts have ranked this game in the top 100 of NES games. So it should be no surprise hacks have been made of this game. This hack is an advanced version of the original game. This hack is supposed to be a lot harder then the original. In my review I will be comparing this hack to the original version and other hacks.

Story: 10

Dr. Wily had been defeated again and the world is at peace. Suddenly a vicious army of robots is bent on world destruction. Dr. Light is also kidnapped during the attack. Mega Man rushes to the scene and finds a yellow scarf floating down. It appears that Mega Man's Brother is behind this destruction. Mega Man shocked that his brother would turn to evil. Is this really Protoman and why or is an old foe at it again. Mega Man sets out to stop the robots, free Dr. Light, and get to the bottom of this. Okay the story was left unchanged and that is good cause it didn't need to be changed. Mega Man 5 had one of the best story lines in the NES Mega Man series. It offers mystery, suspense and creativity. Then it also offers a plot twist. Players do not know till later in the game who the real bad guy is. I really like story lines like that. So since it was left unchanged I give this version a 10 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls 6

Okay this being a hack I expected a few flaws in the graphics and controls. Before I get into that. Let me say I think the original version had some of the best graphics and it showed what the NES was capable of. But this hack is not as sharp as the original. The colors have been changed a little bit but that was a nice touch. The backgrounds and stage themes are still the same. The layout of the stages have been changed though to add to the difficulty. The problem is sometimes the sprites get a little fuzzy. Also the graphics sometimes just want to get fuzzy for unknown reasons. There is also some lags in the game. If your not careful that will send you right into a pit or on spikes.

The controls were alright. They are not as sharp as the original but they are good. Sometimes it seems like the controls want to speed up or slow down. But other than that the controls are mostly smooth. The fuzzy screen at times, the lags and the controls changing speeds pulls the rating down a bit. I think the graphics and controls are a 6 out of 10. Nothing too terrible but nothing real perfect either.

Sound: 10

The Sound In MM5 was amazing. The tunes were awesome and very upbeat. It just makes you want to pause the game and listen to the music. The exploding sounds enemies make is also nice it lets the player know they mean business. Mega Man charged Buster sounds like a cannon letting the player know their shots are doing serious damage. This hack did not change the sound at all. So I stand by my rating of the original game's sound. It gets a perfect 10 out of 10. Sounds in video games don't get much better than MM5.

Replay Value: 7

The original version of MM5 had a replay value of 10. It was so good you could play that game over and over again. This version I find I go to it lest. It is not cause of the difficulty as I like games that challenge you. Its that the graphics and controls kind of makes the replay value suffer a little bit. The game still has the same features as the original. When I want to play a harder version of MM5 I certainly will play this one. I just find myself going to this one less than some of the other hacks. The graphics as I stated is the main reason. So I give the replay value a good 7 out of 10. This game is a fun but challenging game. You will still get enjoyment out of this game. It just has some flaws.

Depth: 9

Mega Man 5 the original version carried on the tradition of Mega Man games having high depth to them. In the original version there were lots of items to collect, power ups to get, and secret rooms. This version does not change that. The items, power ups and secret rooms are all there. So you may be asking why does the depth not get a 10. Some of the stages in the original version and this version are kind of short. Still, this game has a lot of depth to it and since it was unchanged I give it a solid 9 out of 10.

Difficulty: 9

The original Mega Man 5 had its tough spots but it was known as not being a very difficult game. Mega Man games are infamous for their difficulty. I would say the original version had about a 6 rating of difficulty. It had some challenging spots to them. But the game gave you items to help you out. This version is an advanced version and is supposed to increase the difficulty.

This version does in fact increase the difficulty. The stage layouts have been changed to make the game more difficult. Spikes and pits have been added galore in this game. It is so easy to fall into a pit or land on death spikes. Also enemies will just gang up on you in this game. They will hit you from behind or attack in bunches. In addition, its very easy to scroll an enemy back onto the stage. To make matters worse the enemies are very durable. It takes more shots to kill enemies then the original version. You will need to use fully charged shots to get through this game for sure.

Also the Robot masters have undergone some changes. The boss rooms are now made smaller. This gives you less space to dodge or jump out of the way. Moreover, the robot masters attacks are more powerful and their attacks have been sped up. Even slower robot masters have been increased.

As much as this game is difficult. Its not unbearable and certainly doable. The game still helps you out. This game drops a lot of lives so if your short on lives you can kill enemies by backtracking one will eventually drop an extra life. Also, Mega Man's Buster fully charged is like a cannon it is very powerful. So use it to clear the stage. Also some of the enemies can be manipulated into following a pattern giving you time to shoot them. So to sum it up this version is more difficult then the original game. But even though it is difficult its doable. Its not hardcore like the Ridley Hacks are. Those hacks just bury you in terms of difficulty. This is the good kind of difficulty it challenges you and test your skills. But its not the type of difficulty that makes you want to pull your hair out or throw the controller down. So I give the difficulty of this hack a good solid 9 out of 10.

Overall Rating 8.2

As I stated the original Mega Man 5 was a very special game and a great game. This version is a good game but it did have some flaws to it. I would expect a few flaws since this is a hack of the original game. Before I go into the flaws I will start with the positives.

MM5 Advanced is a good game. Its a game that will challenge you but in a fun way. The story line has not been changed. MM5 had an awesome story to it as it offered suspense. So I was glad the maker or makers of this game did not change that. The sound is still amazing since it was left unchanged from the original version. The difficulty has been increased in this game but it is doable and will bring you joy if you like difficult games. The colors have been changed a bit but it was nicely done. So yeah this game does have a lot of good things going for it.

The main flaws of this game are the graphics. The graphics are not terrible but having the graphics get fuzzy at times for no reason gets annoying. You can be going through the game and then the game gets fuzzy. I find that to be annoying as I mentioned. Also the graphics have lags to them. I hate lags because they can mess you up if your not careful. Sometimes lags occur. I do not know what triggers them but they do occur in this game. I wonder if it was due to the software the makers of this game were using. Since this is an older game they may have tried to use newer software and it didn't go to well. That would make sense. The controls are not terrible but sometimes they can speed up or slow down. While playing this game I noticed the controls would speed up and it seemed like Mega Man would move very fast. Other times the controls would slow down and Mega Man would move more slower. It does not occur all the time but sometimes it does. Again, I have to wonder if it was not due to the software the makers of this game were using.

So overall, this is a good version of MM5 and a fun one. Even with the flaws I had fun playing this game. It is a more difficult version of Mega Man 5. So if you thought the original was too easy then you need to play this one. The difficulty is not going to scare gamers away like some of the Ridley Hacks do. I would say MM5 advanced is probably like the original Mega Man 4. Difficult but enjoyable. If your like me this game will challenge you. Would I recommend this game? Yes, I would recommend this game. This game would be great for novice Mega Man players or people who just enjoy Mega Man games. While the difficulty is doable. I would not let this be a game you introduce somebody new to Mega Man games too. If your new at Mega Man games I would recommend you play the Original Mega Man 5 to get a feel of the game before tackling this one. So at the end of the day I give the MM5 Advanced a good 8.2 rating. The flaws mainly due to the graphics and controls pulls the rating down some. But that should not stop one from enjoying this game. I had fun playing this game and I felt like it offers a challenge.
