WWF Wrestlemania - Steel Cage Challenge Review by: Zircron Swift - 6.3/10

Steel Cage Challenge Review
Wrestling games are like wrestling, but with much less pain involved. If you ever watched wrestling, then you'll know how much pain these people deal to each other, and it can be quite remarkable how much the human body can handle. Of course, others will say it's all staged, it's all scripted, all acting for entertainment. I'm not here to say what is what, because I have never watched a wrestling match, nor played a wrestling game. Looks like a slightly 3D Street Fighter game with more personal grabs and pins. However, if I was going to pick a wrestling game, I would go for the NES, where the roots are new and fresh, and they probably have it the simplest. I'm sure it won't be boring or have terrible control and anything like that right? It's not like LJN made any wrestling games, right? Well, yeah, they did. Eight to be precise, all slightly different looking and ripping off Double Dragon in many ways, in my opinion, and Steel Cage Challenge just happens to be the one I pick at random. We know the legacy of LJN:

If LJN is on the cart, then it will surely stab your heart. With graphics that will turn you blind, and music that will numb the mind. Terrible controls to make you anguished, and with a game over I'm finished. Keep that rainbow away by all means, or you'll start to think you're a bean.

...rather proud of that, actually....Ok, maybe I'm being a bit harsh. It's not like they made every game they made horrible. Maybe this one will be better than the rest. One can only hope, right? Ok, so the goal in to become the WWF World Champion. It's some sort of story I suppose. You are greeted with some decent tune and some decent 8 bit art of "Hulk Hogan", which the instruction booklet claims for hi m to be "flexing his 24-inch pythons". I just see some guy standing still. The animation for this "flexing" is so cheap, they didn't even animate it. Good job, guys, good job...

You can pick three different gaming options. Your standard player vs computer, where you play on your own; players v computer, where you tag team up with someone else; and wrestle four other teams for the championships, (it's good to see simultaneous co-op mode in old games like these) and surprisingly, player vs player, where you can test your skill on someone else who claimed to have brought this game and admit it openly. You then pick between four different game modes. One on One for a simple wrestle, Tag Team, where you can team up with an NPC or another player for another single wrestle against a team of two, and then the other two are the Championship version of the previous two
modes, meaning the real deal either on your own for one on one, or together with a friend in Tag Team.

The instruction booklet gives you some good summery information about the wrestlers that they were too lazy to program in game, but as far as
I'm concerned they are all the same in strength, stamina, and move set, just a different set of pixels to differ them from the rest. At least a degree of skill is involved, and not depending on your character choice. That's always nice, assuming you need skill to complete this game. Once you pick your favourite wrestler, you are greeted with that fabled "in the red corner..." introduction (which I've always wondered why they talk about their weight. Just...I don't understand that part), then you are thrown in the ring with another wrestler. The aim is to pin him down for three seconds, and then you win.

The controls seem copied. Moving around the ring instantly reminds me of playing Double Dragon. Punching and all that reminds me of fighting baddies in Double Dragon, it seems unoriginal in the sense they are ripping off Double Dragon in the control department. The controls are a little weird. You hold down A and B at the same time to run, but you need to hold down the buttons to continue running, You can then bounce off the ropes if you run into them, which is kinda fun, that is if another wrestler doesn't punch you to the ground. Another nice feature that I didn't think they had the brains to include was the getting in and out of the ring during the match. This allows more freedom in where you want to fight, but you can't be out for longer than ten seconds, or you are disqualified.

How do you hold onto an opponent? You just simply walk into them. Yeah, not like in Street Fighter II where you need to press a strong button while you are next to them, you just need to walk into them. Imagine if that rule applied in real life. You bump into someone in the streets by accident, and then next thing you know you're thrown into the nearest window. very realistic, guys. If you have the most strength (Which is the bar on top, the more of it you have, the stronger you are and the easier it is to get out of pins), you'll gain an advantage. While you are in this state, you can deliver headbutts, throw them on the ground and throw them into the ropes. While they are on the ground, you can drop kick on them or slam them with your elbows. It's actually rather fun for the first five minutes. There are more complex moves which require running, but since running is quite awkward and it's so easy to be punched out of running, you might not have many chances to execute these moves effectively.

One thing I find really unfair about this game is the strength meter. If you're not careful, you could be punching some guy and getting their strength to a comfortably low level to start pinning them down, but all of a sudden they gain strength! How fair is that, trying to do what the game requires you to do, but won't let you deplete your opponents bar completely. Imagine in Double Dragon you were fighting a boss, you were about to kill him, but since you were using a weapon you picked up, he regained health. So you use up your weapon, and go to kill him, but since you used your weapon slightly, he heals again. You go to kill him a third time, but you used only your feet, and he heals again. It's just not fair. You don't regain any strength when you are low, but your opponent does? I'm beginning to think this whole wrestling thing really is rigged. You have to pin them down before their strength gets too low. If you are ever in a pickle, just spam the A button to get out. In fact, this game is quite the button masher. If you got a turbo controller, then that will save your thumbs.

Every now and then you'll come across a Steel Cage Challenge. The rules are slightly different here. You can either win by pinning your opponent down for three seconds, or reach the top of the cage. Due to how easy it is to get knocked down from the cage, pinning your opponent down to win is an easier option. I like these matches, they seem more challenging than the normal ones. You can run into the steel bars and hurt yourself. That's a nice touch I didn't think they'll add.

The music is very lacking. you get a somewhat decent tune at the beginning, but the rest of the music is dull, tasteless, and not at all catchy. In fact, 70% of the music is the audience cheering. There isn't any music during the matches or anything nice like that. I know in a real wrestling match, things are like that, but this is a game. Can't you add a little something to make it....better? There isn't any sound change in the audience as well, it's the same rate of cheering all the way through, and it gets rather annoying after a while.

The graphics are decent. The wrestlers look a little like what they look like in the instruction booklet, but those are only the mug shots. They are barely recognisable during the match. The details on the ring and cage are also decent at best. The animations on the wrestlers are good, at least they didn't get that wrong. it might not flow smoothly or fast enough during the jumps, but it gets the job done decently. That's a overall word for this game: Decent.

Overall, I give this game a 6.3/10     At first, it was generally quite fun. After about fifteenth minutes though, it was clear that using more complex methods only took longer than normal moves, and they did around the same damage. It was clear the game was of button-mashing quality, not being very constructive in its wrestling aspect. After about half an hour, I was able to defeat the game with ease. Although the game offers continues, but they aren't really needed for experienced players. Even a complete beginner like me was able to defeat the game with ease and sore thumbs. It's a fun game to play, I'll give it that, but only fun for the first 15-20 minutes. After that, you'll see it's a very repetitive game, and offers next to zero in replay value. there is pretty much no reason to play the game again, because you've seen everything it has to offer in one play through.
