Binary City Featured Review

Binary City Review by: Seishiro Leonha.. - 10/10

Ultimate Binary Challenge!
Finally a real game review, a review made with no interest in anything, just making it because I really liked this game, and I thought this game just NEEDED to be reviewed.

You probably have seen many games with requires great strategy, ability, quickness, craziness, classiness, creativeness and etc, right?
Now I'm going to review a game which have everything mixed with a special touch in a single game!

Binary City!

Let's play this game, shall we?

This is example of how you would feel when you first play this game.

-Turns on game- So, the first thing we see when the title screen is climbing up is "Please, don't use savestates until stage 32", then the name of the game appears, the creators etc, so far, nothing interesting, but then suddenly, flashing stars appears falling from the top of the screen, flashing the title screen in a special grace! This game looks very interesting to play! Let's see if the game is as good as the title...
-Presses start- What's this? Chapter 1, Reverse mode? Hmm... interesting..., oh well, let's see what this is about... okay the gray screen of when the stage is starting and... huh? Binarylabs? Apparently stages got names now, not only Stage n (being n = number of stage).
The game is going great so far, let's press start to start the game - presses start- the regular stage start music played normally and... wait what? Why is the player 2 tank on the game if I selected 1 player? Oh well, let's see -presses left- instead of the player 1 tank move left, it is  moving right? The player 2 tank moved left, so apparently the tanks movements are mirrored, if the player 2 tank move up, the player 1 tank move down, well, let's see how this will work out - moves through path bringing both tanks up- Why is a base here? Shouldn't the base be only on the bottom of the stage? - for some reason there is a star here -beats all enemies, well all enemies have been defeated, but the stage didn't end yet -sees a flashing star surround the star counter- this star... does this mean I have to collect the amount of stars shown there? - Collects the star- ah, the stage now ended.
-keeps playing until round 10- This shouldn't be too hard, I'll get these stars and hold them off, oh wait there is no way I can reflect the shots, they will hit the base and there is no way I can defend it - home base destroyed-  what's that that appeared where the star were? Is a 1 block wide line of arrows pointing up and the star I collected is appearing, is this a glitch? -plays again without collecting the star and gets a game over again- no, it is not a glitch, it's a hint from the game, explaining to me that I shouldn't take the star before I destroy all the enemies.
-Play reaching the Auto Fire level- Auto Fire? This doesn't look good, but let's see -plays collecting the stars on the way, when trying to collect another star and the star reflects a shot to the home base- Wha? It hit a home base! How am I supposed to proceed if every time I hit a home base?

So, Binary City is a game which have the binary element from the Binary Land game, but have a bunch of interesting things! Every stage have a different rule, there are stages you will play with the tanks mirrored, both tanks moving correctly, you moving the 2nd tanks by holding the B button, you having to shot the stars on the level to reflect them 90º to hit other stars to reflect the shot to the enemies, you having to collect all the stars before you can attack, auto firing the whole stage, being extremely careful to not hit or reflect shots to bases, destroy the enemies while both tanks are spinning in a circle, and also destroy all the bases in a level to make enemies stop spawning, otherwise stronger enemies spawn.

Beating stages require speed, strategy, a LOT of thought, luck, precision, ability etc, in certain stages you have to make some tricks to make the tanks proceed, in other you have to B to move the 2nd tank while moving the 1st tank, watch everywhere to avoid hitting bases scattered around the stage, reflect your shots to the enemies (there are stages you CAN'T take the star at first glance, you have to avoid the stars for some time to defeat all the enemies before collecting it), stages that are weird (silent and a spot with an almost invisible death trap), classic gaming rounds (like pong, pacman, zelda, metal gear, etc), or stages with an interesting music while you spin around destroying enemies while protecting the base in the middle.

This game features interesting stages in different chapters, some levels aren't too hard, while other is a PAIN to beat, in the Reverse chapter the tank movement is like a mirror, if you move up it goes down; In the impulse chapter, you use the B button to control the 2nd tank (if you hold a direction button and release the B button, the tank keeps moving forward), the VG history chapter with stages that work like classic games (Pong, Pacman, Zelda, Metal Gear, etc).
After every 5 stages, there is a boss level, the bosses have a very large amount of health, and all the bosses have certain special powers, destroy armor blocks, swap places with a friendly tank, swap movement mode (you use select to change from reverse mode to impulse mode), are some examples.
Certain levels require the reflection of shots to beat the level, by shooting the star, the attack spot is equal half space (half block); Use logic,  speed, and much more!

Let's review this game now.

Graphics: 10!

Not all NES games graphics are good, there are many game with terrible graphics, and some with good graphics, the game graphics are just the same, but with the nice detail they inserted into this game it somehow gave a special charm to the game, it still looks like Battle City, but it looks like (kind of) a improved battle city, for Graphics, this game deserves a good 10!

Sound: 10!

I love certain NES music, sounds etc, I grew up with them, so they somehow don't bother me like it bother others, it's something from me, I probably got used to the 8-bit sounds, there are some different sound effects played in different rhythms, but basically the sounds are the same, but there are stages with songs, like the boss levels and the Rollwars level, and the song ROCKED, my favorite soundtrack here is the Rollwars level, I heard that song on youtube before, if I remember right, it was from a Leekspin video starring Chris Redfield (Resident Evil) spinning a veggie and holding his knife, the video was created by ShadowLeggy. So for sounds, I'm rating again 10! (If you know the name of the song, could you please tell me?)

Addictiveness: 10!

This game for me is somehow very addicting, some levels are a PAIN in the... spot, but some levels are fun to play, there were times I wanted to give up, but I just wanted a lot to beat the game, probably even if I beat the game, I will want to play it again and again, the gameplay style, the soundtrack and the challenges are just great, I could keep hours playing this game, despite if I have to do it all over again, this deserves another 10!

Story: Blank

In the original game (Battle City), you are single or pair group of tanks battling to destroy your enemies before they destroy you, while protecting the home base (the gray eagle thingy), through 32 levels, but in this game you must pass through 32 different challenges, protecting or avoiding the home base, fighting without the home base, defeat bosses, destroy all the home bases in the level (this only happened once, don't worry, you will know the stage you have to destroy all the home bases), and collecting stars so you can move on to the next level (after you defeat all the enemies or vice-versa) or be able to attack, and play just like the classic games (for the VG history chapter), like Zelda (your shot range is very little) Pacman (collecting all stars in the level to be able to attack enemies), and etc.

Depth: 10!

32 levels full of challenge, some levels you won't have to sweat, some levels you will waste a LOT of continues to beat, this game can take a LONG time to be beaten, this including if you follow the wish of the game creator of not using savestates, and if you run out of continues and you having to restart the game from the BEGINNING, imagine the situation you are almost beating the game after HOURS or gameplay and you having to restart all over again! So yea! I'm voting 10 again for Depth!

Difficulty: 8!

You wonder why I am voting this 8 right? So let's review, you must control 2 tanks at once destroying your enemies and avoiding destroying your home base(s), lots of levels with challenges which will really challenge your fingers and brain and avoid certain mistakes.
For you to have an idea of how hard this game can be, when you game over in the game, you get taken to the game over screen (obviously, DUH!), where you have the option to continue, or end the game, the continue counter is at 99 continues, you may think this is a really big amount of continues, but as time passes, you will realise that 99 continues is not a lot of continues for this game, but this game is not so evil! You can do certain things that will or may give you an extra continue, for example, when you get game over, or you finish the stage, if the amount of tanks destroyed by each of your tanks are equal, you get rewarded with a +1 continue, if you defeat a boss, you get rewarded +10 continues, just don't forget: Every level is beatable, all you have to do is think hard, oh I almost forgot, if one of the tanks gets a game over, the game will be a game over, so make sure you use the tanks well, and put the tank with the highest lives on the front!
A great grade for difficulty would be 8.

Overall grade: 10!

Yeah, yeah, I know I may have given this a BIG grade, but I just got in love with this game (not literally), the game is very fun, takes a lot of your time, and will get you angry a lot of times.
This game (for some reason having the Binary Land Boxart), is a great game to try out if you are looking for something fun, and a very challenging game, which will probably make you restart the game all over again one or two times, but it's probably worth to play it again and again.
This game is certainly worth for you to spend your Viz, if you like challenges, you will like this game a lot, this is indeed a Ultimate Binary challenge!
