The Wizard of Oz Featured Review

The Wizard of Oz Review by: totaldramaman2 - 0.3/10

The worst platforming SNES game.
Come on... not ANOTHER crappy game... How many are there? Well, this is The Wizard of Oz on... SNES? I haven't made an SNES review since Shaq Fu... that was before I became RGR Staff! So... about last week... I didn't make a review, but I promise to get back on scedule. Now, I'm going to shut up about life and talk about this life-less game.

  --- Movie based games = terrible ---
So, the game starts out with an... okay title screen. Then, when the game starts up, the story is... the same as the movie! Now, it looks like something that would be ripped off of 32X, put through an Atari, and then spat out onto SNES. Toto, the dog, seems like he was added in last second. The producers must of been like "OH ZEBRA WE FORGOT TO ADD TOTO WE HAVE TO ADD HIM IN NOW!" Dorothy seems to be... asleep? Or maybe she was blinking during the picture. But it's not a picture... it's full-motion video! I mean, look at her. Her eyes are closed, she's in a strange position... never mind. So, the tornado comes around and... she motion-lessley moves up the tornado. Did they even TRY? So, then she gets out of her trance, and the Good Fairy starts talking to her, and says something like "Hey, take these slippers, little girl! They won't make you the target of the Wicked Witch of the West!" So, here we learn we have to go through what seems to be a long game. Oh, and there's no saves. You have to put in one of the longest passwords ever. So, in order to build bridges from one country to another, you have to visit all the towns, and collect the parts.

--- Everything wants you dead. ---
So, in previous reviews, I described some of the enemies. Now, I can believe a crow in a vest and the Wicked Witch of the West want you dead, but water fossits, bluebirds, dancing chairs and... lemondrops. And then mouses which would have no purpose if this was on 3DS. THANKS BE TO GOD IT'S NOT. And now... weaponds. Dorothy has a magic attack, which runs on ammo, and it couldn't go down faster. It's like your health bar in Milon's Secret Castle. Dorothy also has a kick, which is your main attack in this game. Unfortnuley, you can't kick while jumping, and... heck, none of the characters can! That's a HORRIBLE thing to do in a game where you need to JUMP everywhere in order to SURVIVE! It's like in Super Mario Bros, if I didn't let you use fireballs in midair. It would be overbearingly difficult, especially the Jumping Cheep-Cheep stages! The scarecrow can only use his pitchfork, which as a horrible hit range. The tin man, oh boy, the tinman. He can't jump or duck. And he can only use his axe, and he can kick. I liked him in the movie, but in this game, he's only good for the final boss. The lion, the rarest character in the game, has two attacks, the same magic attack as Dorothy, and a slap. He's the most useful character in the game, but if he dies ONCE, he never comes back.

--- It's impossible to tell what you can stand on. ---
I can never tell what is solid and what isn't. What confuses me even further is a fatal gltch: You fall through EVERYTHING. If you're not in the middle of the platform, or even jump in any angle, you will fall through. This is espically bad in the crystal stage, where there are HUGE platforms, but you can fall through any part of them. So, at the end of the levels. you have to go over or directly on the arrow. If not, in the lava-log level, you will die. In the lava. When you touch the right-side of the screen, the level should end. In this game, you can't press Down+Jump to go through a platforms, no. You have to walk all the way back through the platforms, and then walk under it. Emerald City is the last level. It's a confusing, enemy-less maze. At the end, there's the Wicked Witch of the West. Here, stand back and spam the Tinman's axe. That's it. You beat one of the hardest games ever. I can't take this much longer. This is the 2nd worst SNES game I've ever seen. See you guys next week!

P.S. This is my 300th post!

The Wizard of Oz Game Description

The Wizard of Oz for the SNES is a re-telling of L. Frank Baum's classic story as strongly influenced by MGM's 1939 musical. To a lesser degree, individual levels adapt locations from the 1993 Wizard of Oz Animated Series by DIC by using settings from the series, such as Time Town. The game is a platform adventure, which highly encourages exploration. The action is split into four worlds. In each of the first three worlds, the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion can be found, while in the last rather than gain a companion the witch must be fought. After gaining a companion, the characters may be switched on the fly, and each companion has significantly different attacks and abilities. Several of the levels require using a combination of all of these abilities to fully explore. The game also includes a variety of mini-games which gives the player a chance to play as Toto also. All levels can be revisited once passed and doing so required both for the purposes of stocking up on items and to find the Emerald City tickets which are required to enter the final area.

It's really depressing how many comments here and even the sole review quite literally just echoes the AVGN review. People really don't have a mind of their own.
