Mega Man Forever (Demo 3) Review by: tornadocam - 5/10

Mega Man Forever (Demo III)
Mega Man is a popular video game character. In fact he is considered a video game icon. In addition, he is often ranked in the top 5 of most popular video game franchises of all time. So, it should be no surprise that a lot of hacks have been made of the iconic character. Mega Man Forever is a Mega Man hack. The game appears to use graphics from various Mega Man games. Warning this review will contain tornado rants

Story: 6

The story is basically  a group of  robots go  crazy in a warehouse/robot factory. All that is known is that the robots   are members of the  alliance. Mega Man thinks Wily is behind this. Dr. Light seems to agree. He sends Mega Man out to find out why the alliance robots went mad. Who is behind the carnage is it Wily or is it somebody else this time. Mega Man heads out to search these answers.

Okay I think the plot has something going for it. Introducing a new group of robots was creative and seems to want to offer something new. However, something is missing. It seems the plot is missing something. What was the alliances purpose, who created them, and did they have a job before they went mad. In other Mega Man plots these answers are usually explained. For example in other games its Wily rebuilt the robots, a virus made them go mad, or somebody was controlling them. In this game it leaves you hanging. Maybe the maker wanted it that way but it just feels like the plot is not as clear as it could be. I give it a 6 out of 10. I like the new robots and new organization. I don't like that we know nothing about them.

Graphics and Controls: 5

When I first played the intro stage I was like "wow the graphics are going to be good in this game" the colors were very good and I liked the layout. However that quickly changed. A lot of the stages have great colors but good something got lost somewhere. Remember how I said how this review would contain tornado rants. Well here is one. The graphics get glitchy and fuzzy in stages. It gets so bad at times that the game looks like a tv screen full of static, yeah it is that bad.  The sprites are way out of lack and some of the characters look like they are missing sprites. In addition, the words get out of whack to. It can be hard to see in the game. Plus the game tells you, you can't play the fortress stages. Why oh Why even include a fortress stage in the game description if you can't play them. Clearly the maker has not completed making this game. From what I found about the maker there is a reason I will explain later on.

Now the controls are surprisingly good. Mega Man controls' are similar to Mega Man 6's. They are not as sharp as Mega Man 7, 4 and 3. But they are very good. I was really surprised considering how bad the graphics where. Mega Man does not appear to slow down or speed up at random. The controls do not appear to lag at all. The colors and decent controls is what keeps me from giving this a rating below 5. The graphics alone would be a 3 out of 10. I would really like to see this game finished and redone. I think it could have good graphics. So yeah 5 out of 10.

Sound: 7

The sound in this game is good. I liked how the game uses old classic Mega Man tunes. There is even one stage that uses a Teenage Mutant Turtle Theme. I really liked that. Mega Man games are known for their amazing sound. This one has a decent soundtrack. However, there are a few problems. Some of the tunes have tingles in them if anyone has read my other reviews you know I hate tingles.  Second, it appears sometimes the tunes speed up and slow down. Again it shows that the game is not complete. These issues is what really hurts the rating some. Mega Man's buster sounds like it did in Mega Man 5 and 6 which was amazing. Enemy shots sound good like they do in other Mega Man games. I give the sound a 7 out of 10.

Replay Value: 3

I really hate giving a Mega Man game a very bad rating when it comes to replay. I am a huge fan of Mega Man games and have been playing Mega Man games since the 1980's when Mega Man came out. This game looks like it could really be a good game if it was completed and the problems corrected. But in this game's current state it has too many problems to really enjoy. I played this game a few times and I got aggravated more than I had fun. The bad graphics, the tingles in the sound, the not so clear plot, not being able to play the fortress due to the game not being complete and the wrong type of difficulty makes this one not enjoyable at all. I hate to say that. I really hope the maker goes back and fixes these issues because if the issues where fixed, this could be a really good game. But right now I give it a 3 out of 10 rating

Depth: 8

The depth in this game is like a lot of Mega Man games. Mega Man games are infamous for their depths. This game despite its problems is no different. There are secret items to find, power items to collect, and secret passages. In addition, the stages are often long so it will take a lot of time to even reach a halfway point in a stage. Moreover, it takes a lot of time to complete the stages. If there is a positive to this game besides the sound it is the depth. I was glad to see the maker stuck with the tradition of including lots of depth to this game. I really liked that. Therefore I give the depth an 8 out of 10.

Difficulty: 8

Okay the difficulty in this game is hard to rate. Normally an 8 out of 10 means the game is difficult. However I had a hard time rating the difficulty of this game. The main reason is due to the glitches, the graphics going fuzzy and the sprites missing it made the game difficult for the wrong reasons. When I think of good difficult games I think of Mega Man games that challenge you, test your skill, test your creativity, and require luck to beat. Those are the games that I enjoy. In fact, a lot of Mega Man games are difficult for the right reasons I mentioned. This game has done of that yet the game is difficult as I am about to explain.

The graphics being terrible and unfinished is what makes this game difficult. When the graphics get glitches or fuzzy it is hard to see where you are going. I died the most in this game that away. I would be going along in a stage only for the next section to turn fuzzy and I end up getting hit or falling into a pit. Also due to the graphics you cannot see enemies. The boss battles are another nightmare and it is not so much due to the bosses. A lot of the bosses sprites look like peanut butter that has been spread out. In the meantime the boss room is usually all fuzzy. This makes dodging and hitting the bosses hard. The only other Mega Man game that had not so good graphics was Mega Man 1. But even Mega Man 1 you could see where you where going and the bosses where clear. This game one cannot even see the spikes and pits sometimes.

Overall, I can't rate the game mainly on enemy placement and boss battles. The game is not complete and you can't really see well due to the graphics. So I give the game an 8 out of 10 rating. But it does not feel like an 8 out of 10 for the right reasons. The game is difficult for the wrong reasons.

Overall: 5

After playing this game a few times It really bothered me that game was not completed. It reminds me of my days in school. When I was in school sometimes I was an aid. I would sometimes grade the teachers papers. This game reminds me of how a student that would turn it homework or projects that where only 50% complete. So I thought why did the maker not finish this. I did some research on the maker of this game. It turns out the maker put out demos of his project (this game out) just to see how people would react as he was hoping for positive feedback. But instead his website according to him people started flaming and trolling him. So his last post was he would not finish the project due to the flaming so the game in his own words was canceled. I really hate that. The game looks like it could be a really good game if it was completed and the issues fixed. Maybe the maker will redo this game, complete it and finish it. I think if the maker could make a really good game. But currently the game has too many issues to really give a high rating.

But before I get into the negatives. This game does have a few things that are positive. I really like the new robot masters, and I like how the maker tried to introduce a new group of characters. I really think the maker was trying to offer something new here and it shows. I would like to see a completed version of this. The sections in stages that where complete really looked good. The backgrounds in the completed sections are colorful, have good sprites and seems to be well balanced. The controls are also decent.

The negatives in this game are just way too much to enjoy. I think the plot could have been cleaned up some like telling us who the alliance is and what was their original purpose. The stages need to be completed. A lot of the issues are due to the stages not being complete. The sounds needs to be cleaned up a little bit too get rid of the tingles. In addition, I hate it that you cannot play the fortress stages. What is a Mega Man game without the fortress stages that really stinks. Also the difficulty is due to the graphics being terrible.

I would like for the maker to give this project another go. I would love to play a 100% completed version of this with the fortress stages. This game looks like it could be very fun to play if it was completed. It is a shame that people ruined the game by flaming and trolling the makers blog/website. People can be nasty and cruel at times. According to the maker it got so bad that people were sending him vulgar messages so he just halted development. I really do not blame the maker for doing that. I mean here you put out demos of a project your working on you announce your working on a mega man game. Everything is going good. People are giving you positive feedback. Then a bunch of people start getting on your site flaming you, trolling, and sending you very nasty messages. You see all of that and it makes you think "this project is not worth my time I'm going to focus on other stuff". So I do not blame the maker for having that attitude and canceling this project.  What I think should happen is maybe the maker could make changes on his site to where only he could approve comments and give this game another go.

Overall I give the game a 5 out of 10. The game has a few things going for it. But it just has too many issues to really recommend. So as far as recommending this game goes. I cannot recommend this game because it is not complete. This game what you can play of it can be frustrating due to the issues with the graphics and other things I have covered. Maybe a completed version will be made and I can give the complete version a recommendation. But as of right now I can't recommend this game.  The reason the game gets a 5 is because I learned why the maker stopped developing this game. Also the game does have a few positive things going for it that I have mentioned.

Played it. Visuals are incredible, but harder than your traditional Mega Man games.
