Mega Man 4 - Ridley X Hack 5 Review by: tornadocam - 8.2/10

Mega Man 4 Ridley Hack V
Mega Man 4 Ridley Hack V, is another hack of the popular video game Mega Man 4. Mega Man 4 is often regarded as one of the top NES games of all time. In several rankings the game placed in the top 100 of NES games of all time. Several hacks have been made of this great game. So, time to review another hack of Mega Man 4. For all purposes I will be comparing this hack to other hacks and the original game of Mega Man 4.

Story: 9

The story is left unchanged from the original game, which is nice, because no changes needed to be made. Mega Man 4's story was awesome it offered suspense, mystery, creativity, and it brought something new to the series. Basically. Mega Man has defeated the plans of Dr. Wily three times. Wily has faded from the citizens of the world. Suddenly, new robot are leased upon the world. Could this be Dr. Wily again? Dr. Cossack appears on TV saying how the new robot army is his. He said its time people recognized that he was a master in Robotics and was tired of being in the shadows. He challenges Mega Man for a duel. Who is Dr. Cossack, is he really the one pulling the strings, or has an old foe returned? Mega Man heads out to stop the new army and get answers to these questions.

It should be no surprise that I give the story a 9 out of 10. Mega Man 4 as stated had an awesome story to it. It was like Capcom was trying to offer something new here. I also like how they created mystery and suspense in the story line.

Graphics and Controls: 7

The graphics in this game were mostly good but they did have their problems. Before I get into the negatives I will start with the positives. I really like how the stages' backgrounds have been changed to Mega Man 9 and 10's background. That was a nice touch and it makes one think they are playing a different game from the original. I also like the game's colors. The colors were nicely done. The sprites are also very good. However, there were some problems with the graphics in this game. They are more lags in this game then Ridley Hack IV. RHIV had very good graphics and there were only a few minor lags in that game. This game has more. Sometimes the screen will not scroll ahead as you advance. This can get you hit or knocked into the pit. Also sometimes the game lags esp in the rain and water stages. If your not careful its easy to miss a jump and fall into a pit or land on spikes.

The controls are very good for this game. They are not as smooth as the original game. But they are decent. Mega Man 4 had some of the smoothest controls for an NES game. I wasn't expecting the controls to be sharp because after all this is a hack. I think the controls are a lot like RHIV very good. They are not sluggish like RHI and RHII controls were. Now, there were a few minor issues. Sometimes the controls see sluggish but this is only in the water stages. So no biggie there. Overall I give the graphics and controls a good 7 out of 10.

Sound: 10

The sound was left unchanged. I was so glad that so far they have not changed the sound in these hacks. Mega Man 4 had a very awesome soundtrack to it. The music is very nice and can cause you to pause the game just to listen. Mega Man's buster shots are the right sound. Enemies sounds are the same as they were in the original game. So it should be no surprise I give the sound a perfect score of 10 out of 10.

Replay Value: 7

This was a fun game to play, it seemed like it was offering something new. I also liked how they used future Mega Man game's stages. It makes one feel like they are playing a different game then the original MM 4. Even though this is just a hack of the original. However, the lags in this game brings the replay value down. I really liked RHIV and MM4 Simple Version better in terms of hacks. This game was not as buggy as RHI and RHII. It reminded me a lot of RHIII. The game is a good game overall. But it does have some flaws. Now to some the flaws are minor and they would not be bothered by it. But RHIV and Simple I believe top this one in terms of replay value. Of course it is also hard to top the original Mega Man 4. Still, this was a fun game to play. I give the replay value a 7 out of 10.

Depth: 9

Mega Man games are known for the depth and this one is no different. First of all, the stages have been increased. Yes, the stages in this hack or longer then the original Mega Man 4 stages. One, has to go a long way just to reach the halfway mark in this game. Like most Mega Man games there are secret ares to explore, hidden items to collect, and most stages require a second visit. I was so glad the makers of this game did not change the depth in this game. Mega Man 4 had a lot of depth to it. The Ridley Hacks so far have not changed that. So it should be no surprise I give the depth a 9 out of 10.

Difficulty: 9

Ridley Hack V was a very difficult game but doable. The difficulty is not like RHI and RHII version of Mega Man 4. Those versions just buried you in terms of difficulty. RHIII had the right difficulty and RH IV was not as difficult. But this version is a step up in terms of difficulty from RH IV. First of all, pits and spikes are plentiful in this game. It is so easy to get knocked into a pit, miss a jump, and land on the spikes. Also a lot of the stages require problem solving skills to advance. Some of the stages require special weapons and precise jumps to continue on. The enemies in this game are very plentiful and will gang up on you. Not to mention as one should expect a lot of the enemies are placed near pits. Some even come out from the pits sending you down with them. One thing I noticed is Mega Man's buster's recoil. When you charge the Mega Buster you will need to make sure you can fall into a pit. Because Mega Man's Buster has some recoil to it in this game which can send you back into the pit or on spikes.

I really like games that challenge you and require problem solving. This one does all of that as it requires skills, precision, creativity, problem solving and luck. I like to be challenged and this version does that. This is why a game should be difficult. However this game was difficult for the wrong reasons too. One of the wrong reasons is the lags that occur in this game. Sometimes one will find themselves getting killed cause the stage will not scroll onto the next section as you advance. I died a lot in this game for that reason alone. Also in the water stages the sluggish controls will cause one to have to advance with extra caution. But I have also found in the water stages the lags occur more often.

At the end of the day I give the difficulty a 9 out of 10. I don't think it deserves a 10 because when I think of a 10 difficulty I think of games that just bury you. It was a step up in difficulty from Ridley hack version IV of Mega Man 4. So while the game is very difficulty its doable. Once you play through the game a few times you become more aware of were the lags occur and the tough spots. However, this is one game that will really challenge you. So I think a solid 9 out of 10 is about right.

Overall 8.2

This version of the game was a solid version and I had fun playing it. The game offered some new things while keeping the classic feel. However, this game did have some problems. I will start with the positives before the negatives.

This game did have some positive things going for it. I really liked the background being changed to future Mega Man games mainly MM 9 and MM 10. That was a nice touch and it seemed like the makers of the game were trying to offer something new. Even though this is just a hack of the original game. It felt like I was playing a different game. To me that shows there were lots of creativity and time that went into this game. I also like how they did not change the plot and sound in this game. The original game had an awesome plot and an awesome sound track to it. The game's difficulty was upped from version IV and its more difficult then the original game. But its not a game that buries you like Ridley Hack Version I and II of this game is.

Now this game was more flawed then version IV. The main problem with this game is the lags. I do not know why there are lags in this game. Yes I know its a hack and I would expect a few lags or two. But RHIV did not have that many lags in it. So maybe the makers of this game had to use different software to create background from future games. Maybe the makers of this game were in a hurry. For whatever the reason the lags can be a problem in this game. As I have stated sometimes the game lags while advancing. This can get you hit, sent into a pit, or poked to death by spikes. That can be really annoying at times. It also makes the game more difficulty but as I mentioned the lags make the game at times difficult for the wrong reasons.  Second, while the controls are mostly good they can be sluggish at times in the rain and water stages. I want to think that is due to the physics going on in the stages. But then again the original game, simple and RHIV did not have these problems. That makes me think that maybe whoever makes these games was in a hurry.

Overall I give this game an 8.2. Don't let the negatives keep you away from trying this game. I thought despite the games flaws that this is a good hack. It is certainly and improvement over RH I and RHII. I had fun playing this game and when I need a challenge I would play this one again. The game does not top Mega Man 4 though. But lets be honest Mega Man 4 was special and it would be hard to top a game like that.  This game does offers some new things. I really like the background of future Mega Man games, and the color theme. One can easily play this game and forget they are playing a hack. The sound and depth are very good. The game did have some flaws but that should not stop one from enjoying this game. So would I recommend this game? Yes I would recommend this game. However, I do not recommend this game for new Mega Man players. New players to Mega man might get easily frustrated with this game due to the lags, and difficulty. It could turn a new player off. I would recommend new players play the simple hack or the original game. I would recommend this game for novice players and veteran Mega Man players. If your like me you will find enjoyment out of this game.

Conclusion, the game has flaws but is a nice hack overall. I give it an 8.2 it is certainly better then some of the other hacks I have played. But not as sharp as the original game, MM IV simple version, or RH IV.  If the game did not have the lag problem then this game would easily get a higher rating. So yeah I think a solid score of 8.2 is about right.
