I feel ridiculously stupid lately, and it's left me questioning a lot with regards to my education.

Like, on the one hand, I'm in college, and I'm taking the initiative. I'm even going to tutoring every other day, because I know how important this is to future success.

But here's the problem, I'm fairly certain I'm going to fail one of my four classes, and I'm also feeling like it's possible (if not probable) that I fail a second as well. And I feel like I've done everything I can, I'm just bad at school in general.

I can't study more than I already do, because I have to also work (long story short, it's a condition of me being out here, and not having to pay my entire college tuition) at the same time. I've been getting help wherever it's possible, and I'm just not sure what more I can do.

I'm a Biology major, but I'm wondering if I need a major change, because the two classes I'm likely to fail are Trig (which I'm certain to fail) and Chemistry (mainly because of testing scores, even though I've spent a ridiculous amount of time studying).

The thing I do best at is English, but I absolutely hate the subject (whereas I love sciences, but I tend to suck at them).

What should I do? Should I continue with my current major in the hopes I figure something out? This is a field I want to work in (physical therapy), and am fairly passionate about. I could take an easy English degree, and no doubt graduate without any issue, because it's kind of my forte, but I have no interest in any careers I could really get with the degree. On the other hand, if I do graduate with an English degree, I could probably secure a job where I get paid more than I currently get paid (even though I'd be absolutely miserable).

Well, I could give you some advice, but since I don't fully know you as a person it might not work out.

I know I am in a similar position, but I also know myself and I know I tend to go through seasons: inspired, silly, f*** everything, the world is mine... That's basically why I keep on going at university even though I'm feeling totally silly now, because for some strange reason I may feel inspired again and pass with flying colors. I'm also aiming for other things, right now in an attempt to possibly skip university because there are so many wrongs with it and I don't need more trouble in my shoulders.

If you're good at English, maybe you're good at learning languages. Maybe changing university for language-learning courses while you keep your current job could do the work. However, in 'Murica knowing several languages may not be as necessary as here in Europe, something that totally destroys this theory.

I'm quite tired today, so I'm not sure what else could I add to this. Since it wouldn't hurt me to (re)analyze my path (once) again, I could be back tomorrow with more advice.

Is it possible for you to drop one class, and take it next semester/year? It sounds like you might be overloading yourself if you're focusing on courses which are outside of your "easy area" as I like to say. It might take longer to finish, but you might need the extra time to study. I'm sure you're already aware of this, but there are TONS of youtube videos dedicated to science/math. They were my lifeline when I was upgrading my credits for highschool last year - I'm more of a visual person so it helped a lot.

I think down the line you'll regret the job you do not enjoy doing. Stick with what you enjoy doing. I had similar experience, I probably should have stuck with photography as apposed to web design. There are days I really regret the path I took.

What matters most is that you're trying. It's definitely important to pursue a career that you'd actually like doing in case you end up staying in the same job for a long time. I'd say keep doing what you're already doing, and maybe there are other science classes out there that would suit you more than chemistry. I worked hard in chemistry for the most part but I bombed my final exam (thankfully I had a B overall though).

It's much healthier for you to end up in a career you enjoy because you're more likely to hold on to that job for a long time if you work very hard to succeed, like you're trying to in your classes. Keep working hard to get that career, and if it doesn't work out look into some other careers like it that you could go for.

I don't have a ton of useful advice for you because I'm in high school, but I hope that helps a bit.

I would say if you're really sure that this is what you enjoy doing and that you would be miserable doing any English related major then you should go for it. Obviously I'm younger than you and haven't enrolled at university yet so I can't give you too much advice from experience but many people in my family ended up choosing not to pursue their interests because of financial gain or other reasons and all of them have ended up regretting it. Personally I went through a somewhat similar situation a few years ago when I had to choose a subject area specialization. I was either able to choose a natural sciences focus which typically leads to the most well paying jobs and would make sense considering I had high grades or I could pursue the social sciences which is where my interests were. In the end I chose the latter and I haven't regretted doing so since I actually enjoy learning about and discussing new things.

I would second plastic in that if it's somehow possible try to take classes at a slower pace. Since it's trig, take advantage of all the free math resources available online like several youtube videos and sites like khanacademy, perhaps even take advantage of math help forums like certain subreddits. They can really do wonders in terms of helping you understand the concepts.

Let me give a word of advice to those who are entering or are in college right now: Your major SHOULD NOT be about what job you want to enter. Your major is what you passionately and enthusiastically want to spend your four years of learning and concentrating. You are in a position to learn under professors of their field, you would want to take advantage of that opportunity on things that you want to learn. The enthusiasm and passion will drive you to succeed in that field.

When you said that you hate the field of English, that should be the clearest indication that you should not go into English. It doesn't matter if you are good at English. If you don't enjoy it, then it would affect your happiness throughout your college career, and even more so, in a job relating to English if you graduate with it.

In terms of your poor grades in those classes, college studies are definitely more about time management and drive than simply working hard studying your subject. Sometimes working hard is not enough for some of these classes, especially in the sciences when discipline is important. The two classes that you indicated are math and chemistry, which are required side classes but not the main classes for your major. The bigger question is how you are doing in your main biology classes. If those are a struggle as well, then you need to reexamine whether there are other things that are hindering your success in college, like time-management, discipline, or even if it is truly your passion. Speaking from experience (teaching physics to my high schoolers), I have students who are quite passionate about the knowledge of physics, but because they are so overwhelmed in their senior year with college level courses, extracurricular in band and sports, and family issues, that some of their tests results are below their expectations, missing questions that they would normally be able to answer during conversations.

For now, everyone else have suggested ways to improve upon your grades, like online study sites, videos, etc. This is especially true for science and math because they are so concrete, it's easy to make study guides and videos. If your college is small enough, have an appointment with your professor to discuss options is also a good idea. If you have good professors, they are there to help you. My personal suggestion is for you to know what misconceptions you have. You should be reflective from assessments and think what topics in these classes do you not understand, then focus on those topics and find a solution on how to correct that misunderstanding so that you can do it next time.

Dropping a class to retake it another year might be an option ONLY IF this is the only time you will use it and if deadline for dropping classes is still available. Dropping a class at this point of the year will leave a mark on your transcript, but 1 or 2 is ok. Having more than 1 semester of dropped classes will raise red flags for future programs.

Simply put, I think it's too early for you to think about switching majors unless you found something else that you are good at and that you have a passion for.

I'm just going to give a quick update here.

I somehow, against all odds, passed all of my courses.

Yeah, I passed even Trig, the class I was 100% certain I was going to fail. I needed to crush the exam, and apparently, I did just that.

My chem grade isn't final, but I'm pretty certain, looking at what I have, that it's going to stay a C.

So -

English 1B - A (Seriously, I know I'm good at English, but I must have nailed that final essay).
Biology - B
Chemistry - C
Trigonometry - C

So I'm going to summon everyone who commented in this thread, so I can tell them what I've decided to do.

I'm going to stick with my major, Biology. This is what I'm most passionate about (I can't say I love learning, but if I don't learn, there's no chance for me to get a job that I won't hate every waking minute of every waking day AND get paid well enough to live, especially in America), and even though I had a scare, I was able to buckle down and pass everything, while maintaining a good GPA (my college GPA, despite this semester, is still above a 3.4).

I owe a lot of my success this semester to taking time going to the college's tutoring center for help every day (I spent roughly 40 hours in tutoring, the three weeks leading up to the exams, studying for Trig alone), which I had been doing for roughly a month prior to the creation of this thread.

I can't say I have advice for people for the future though, because so much of it seems dependent on luck. You can study all day and all night, but to be honest, most of what was on the exams were things way beyond what we did in general classwork, and it was just good fortune I was able to understand the problems at all. Studying helped, for sure, and probably made the difference, but the biggest factor was 100% luck.

legacyme3 : This should be said without prompting: Huge congratulations in finishing your first year in college! It is not easy and it is not suppose to be easy, so you deserve to feel good about it and about yourself!

Use your summer well. Recharge. Rest. And when it is getting close to your new semester, plan ahead on how you should approach the new semester so that you can avoid some of the issues in the past.

It's actually the end of my third semester now, so I'm gearing up to finish my second "year", in a sense of things.

Unless you count three semesters as a year, in which case, forget I said anything.

I'm probably going to have to take calculus next, but outside of that, all remaining courses have to do with my major, so I'm excited to continue, and be done with English.

Vizzed.com is very expensive to keep alive! The Ads pay for the servers.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
