Capcom has given us two great iconic series Mega Man and Street Fighter. Both of these series are ranked pretty high among gamers. Mega Man is often ranked in the top 5 of video game icons. Street Fighter is not far behind. What would happen if the Mega Man series adopted a beat em up street fighter gimmick? Well that is what Mega Man Power Battle is. Here the Mega Man series plays like a street fighter game.

Story: 6

The main plot is Dr. Wily has sent some of his past robot masters out to create havoc once again. Mega Man and Proto Man head out to stop Wily's latest rampage. Bass, also sets out to prove to Wily and the world he is the most powerful robot. The player can chose three paths with different sub-plots. The first sub plot the player fights Robot Masters from Mega Man I and 2. The second the player or players fight Robot Masters from Mega Man 3-6. The third Sub-plot the players fight Robot Masters from Mega Man 7. Power Battle can be played with one or a two player system. In addition, players can choose from Mega Man, Proto Man, and Bass.

I like the idea of having a street fighter like theme. I think that was creative and offers something different for the Mega Man franchise. However, it seems like something is missing. The plot it is not clear if this is a tournament or not. If it is then why Did Wily get involve. Mega Man 6's plot would have made sense here. It just seems like something is missing. Also this is a fighting game so fighting games are not known for their plots. I give the plot a 6 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls: 9

The graphics are very good for this type of game. I like the backgrounds in all of the fights. I also like how the graphics change to include Robot Masters depending on which path you take. That was a very nice touch. The sprites are also amazing. This game had a lot of good graphics going for it. The only problem is sometimes when switching weapons it seems to slow the game down a little bit. However, this is a minor problem and really does not have effect on your character.

The controls are pretty good for a fighting type game. The controls remind me of Street Fighter. I'm not surprised considering Capcom made Mega Man and Street Fighter games. Mega Man and Proto Man have very good controls. Bass's controls can sometimes feel sluggish so that brings the rating down a little bit. Overall, this game has very good controls.

Sound: 8

The sounds in this game are very good. Shots from your character or the Robot Masters make a pow sound to let you know their shots hit. That is a nice touch. Also the game uses past music from Mega Man 1-7. Some of those games had some of the best music. So I was glad to see they picked from the best. The voice saying Win or Loose is a nice touch though that could have been done a little it better. I think it would have been awesome if they used the Street Fighter II voice in this one since that is what this game is based off of. While the music is very good, sometimes it seems like the other sounds tune the music out. At first I thought it might be the emulator. But I played the original game and got the same results. Still the sound is good and I give it an 8 out of 10.

Replay Value

When I first got this game I thought it had a unique theme. I really liked what Capcom was trying to do here by basing this off of Street Fighter. I played this game quite a bit when I first got it. Mainly, because it was something different and unique. I still find myself playing this when I want to play a Mega Man game that offers something new and different. Therefore, I give the rating a good 8 out of 10. The game is pretty good.

Depth: 6

Most people do not think of fighting games having a high amount of depth to them. Most of the time that is the case. However, Power Battle does have some depth to it. First of all, you can chose 3 different paths with different Robot Masters. That adds to the replay value and depth as it makes you want to play a different path with a new game. Second, you can chose from 3 different characters: Mega Man, Proto Man, and Bass. So it is fun to play through the game with a different character. The thing that hurts the depth is unlike regular Mega Man games there are not stages here. The reason being is this is a fighting game so stages were not needed. Still for this to be a fighting game it does offer decent depth to it. I give it a 6 out of 10.

Difficulty: 7

Since this is a fighting game the difficulty was hard for me to rate. This game can challenge you as some of the Robot Masters will just beat you up. Also some of the weapons have little amount of ammo so you better use them wisely in battles. Also your character can either make the game easier or more difficult. Now here is where the game is difficult to rate. Unlike other Mega Man games if you die you have to start over again. Here when you die you have a timer countdown. If you press the buttons before the timer reaches 0 your character will be back with full health and can continue to fight in the battle. Again, that is how most fighting games are. So do not worry about dying in this game. At the end of the day I came up with a difficulty rating of 7. The bosses being powerful, limited ammo, and the characters making the game easier or harder adds to the difficulty. On the other hand considering you can't really die unless you let the timer reach 0 takes away the difficulty. So while the game can be challenging it is nothing that is going to make you get frustrated. It is also not a piece of cake either.

Overall Rating 8.3

Power Battle Came out I want to think around 1996 maybe. However, most gamers in America did not get to play this game until it was released on the Mega Man Anniversary collection for Play Station II. There is not a difference between the 1996 version and the one included in the Anniversary Collection. This game had some good points to it and a few minor issues. I will start with the positives.

First of all, I like what it seemed Capcom was trying to do here. It is obvious they took Street Fighters theme and used it in a Mega Man game. It was like Capcom was trying to cross their two iconic franchises. I personally think they did a good job of it. I also like the beat em up type game. To me it offers something new and unique to the Mega Man games. I also like how the graphics are in this game. Having the different backgrounds was a nice touch. I also like how Robot Masters make appearances in the different stages. In addition, getting to chose different paths and different characters adds to the depth to this game.

Now for the negatives, again these are very minor. I really think something was missing in the plot. I like the idea but I think they could have gone into more detail. For example, they could have had Dr. Wily organize a tournament to take over the world, or to make money. The potential is limited. It seemed like they could have taken Mega Man 6's plot and applied it to this type of game. So it just seems like the plot is missing something. Also when playing as Bass beware of the controls being either too fast or too slow. This can get you hit. Its not as bad as some of the other games I have played, but  it is noticeable. Also, even though this is a fighting game and stages where not needed. It kind of feels funny without any stages. I guess playing regular Mega Man games will do that to you.

Overall, I give Power Battle a solid 8.4. The game is pretty good and very fun to play. The issues with this game are very minor and most people will not be bothered by them. I really like the idea of a beat em up fighting type game like Street Fighter. This is a game that is fun for the entire family and anyone should be able to play. The difficulty while it can be tricky at times is not brutal at all. This would be a great game to introduce new gamers too. So would I recommend this game. Yes I would recommend this game its very fun, and unique. It is also family friendly so its a game you could let your children play. Anyway have fun discovering and playing this game.

Also Blessings in Christ. Until next time.

I've played this game a couple hundred times with my brother, and I think you summed it up pretty well here.

Ah yes, the nineties: A time when games were either platformers or tournament fighters. lol To see Megaman in a fighter sounds strange to me, but I guess it makes as much sense as an RPG with him in it, so why not?

It sounds like they used some unusual mechanics in this, namely the limited ammmo, so they tried to shake things up a bit, which is nice. It's always good to see developers decide to not just fall back on the established norms and ideals. I'm not a fan of fighters, so I'd pass on it personally, but this one at least sounds like it has real character of it's own.

Nice work on the review, man.
