I was expecting someone to either make an article or a thread about this, but since nobody else has mentioned it yet, I might as well go ahead and say it. Nintendo is going to be releasing a new NES called the NES Mini. It'll have 30 built in games, but unfortunately there won't be any way to add any other games to it besides the ones already built in. The system will cost $59.99, and will be released on November 11th. So, do you think this was a smart move on Nintendo's part? Will you be buying an NES Mini? Do you hope that Nintendo will make more of these new classic edition consoles? I personally think they should make one for the SNES, N64, Gameboy and GBC at some point.

I wont be buy one one now since I not even allowed to connect my PS4, so ill have to wait until I move out but I will eventually, that's a great price for that many games and the system.

As for other systems, I don't think there should be new ones like this for GB/GBC, I think just adding all the games to the eshop will be much better.

Jordanv78 : Something tells me that you might want to see this.

To be honest, I don't know if I'll be buying one. While I like the line-up of games for the most part, I'd prefer just buying a download code of all those games (for Wii U) bundled with an NES controller that can hook up to the Wiimote. And besides this, I don't have the money I think this would have been the smarter business option, as Nintendo seemed to imply they have no further plans for the NES Mini here: http://kotaku.com/the-mini-nes-wont-open-cant-connect-to-the-internet-1783693116

Perhaps they couldn't get the licenses for the games otherwise for this package deal, I don't know. But it seems to me that the cost of making each Mini NES isn't worth it. Why wouldn't Nintendo use this as an opportunity to sell more Wii U's instead?

...unless perhaps this isn't primarily about making money, but providing a low-cost option to folks that just want to enjoy games. In which case, I commend you, Nintendo. This might also be them trying to entice people not to pirate their games. I do hope they'll also provide a package deal for the Wii U (or even the NX!) like this sometime in the future.

I saw a post on Facebook from Nintendo's page talking about this. So far I'm excited about it since I love playing many NES games! But I'm unsure because I don't know what specific games are on there besides Super Mario Bros. 3. The price sounds like a good deal, the entire mini-console is less expensive than some Wii U games I've seen at GameStop.

I think that Nintendo making this mini-console was a good idea for the most part. I hope it doesn't negatively affect their Wii U sales, as well as the sales of downloadable NES games on the Wii U. Like supernerd said, I'll be happy if Nintendo isn't just doing this for the money but instead doing it for people who want to play classic games for a low price.

If I hear more details about this before it comes out, I'll most likely buy it. I might not be the only one in my house playing it because my dad likes some NES games too! I also think they should make classic edition consoles for other ones, especially the Game Boy and Game Boy Color.

I think it is a waste of time and money. I mean,I like the retro factor and the built in games, but people can just play them here. So,I think Nintendo messed up. Of course this comes from a guy that thought Pokemon would die out years ago.

I'm rather sad that there's only 30 games on there. Yes, that is a decent amount of games but... the fact that you can't get anymore games for it is just ugh. At least make it compatible with other NES carts? :v

It's a much cheaper option than buying the games and console separate however (yea I know you can just emulate it but it's not exactly the same as playing it on an actual console).

This is interesting, and if the emulation quality (I mean, it has to be better than some pirates out there) is good then I will take an interest in it. I'll probably never be able to buy it because I'm broke, however. Something similar for the SNES or another system would also be pretty cool.

Yeah, the limit of 30 titles is pretty annoying. Of course they've got a great selection on there but limiting to only 30 seems strange. You could easily fit the entire library of English games on to an extremely small hard drive (by today's standards) so having 100+ games should have been a breeze.

Still, if I didn't emulate games I would be interested. Especially if they come with the old style controllers.

I personally don't find this to be that interesting and something that's not going to appeal to most people unless they can't afford a proper nintendo home console or handheld. Like zander I'd prefer they just add games to the eshop where it's much more accessible, perhaps make a package deal like this. If it retailed at about half that price (29.99) I'd maybe consider getting it.

I know I'm not going to get one. Even if I didn't use emulators, I could buy more than a handful of used PS3 titles I'd enjoy a lot more than what is offered here. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the NES and the classics, but not being able to add anything else to it, or even being able to use your own old cartridges, is a deal breaker for me. Like geeo said, with a modern hard drive, it should've been easy to put a lot more titles on it, and even though 30 is a good number, I don't think it justifies creating an entirely "new" console.

I mean even the 32x from Sega had a lot more titles than that (quality put aside) to play on it lol.

This is just dumb IMO.
Don't get me wrong the Concept of a NES mini is great,  and the titles that they have available for it is also great.

But 60 Bucks for a 8 bit system?  That's outrageous, the NES is far from a top of the line console these days.

If I really wanted NES titles that badly, I'll fire up my WII console and download the Virtual console games which is a cheaper alternative.

Or Play Nes on my computer and buy one of those NES usb controllers that they sell on amazon for an authentic experience.

You should've provided a picture. Since you didn't, I will.

At first I was really excited and thought this was really cool but then I quickly realized it doesn't play the original games. $60 is a great price for 30 great games (when you consider that the average price of these games on the Virtual Console is around $5) but it just doesn't seem very logical to have this system hooked up and taking up space in my living room when it's only limited to 30 games and can't be expanded in any way (either through upgrades or by original cartridges).

I love that it's small and that it's HD but almost all of these games can be obtained on the Virtual Console. The games are also most likely software emulated and probably aren't being hardware emulated using original hardware (which I wouldn't have expected). Basically this is just an emulated device similar to the Retron5 or the RetroFreak.

So I doubt I'll get it but I almost 100% will buy the controller which will be sold by itself. The controller will work on a Wii U (possibly even a Wii) which means that I'll be able to play my NES games on my Virtual Console with a controller that is identical to the original controller and it's a huge plus that it's a 1st party controller which basically means that it's going to be close to using an original NES controller as you're going to get.

For those wondering, here are the games that are built in:
-Balloon Fight
-BUBBLE BOBBLE
-Castlevania
-Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
-Donkey Kong
-Donkey Kong Jr.
-DOUBLE DRAGON II: THE REVENGE
-Dr. Mario
-Excitebike
-FINAL FANTASY
-Galaga
-GHOSTS 'N GOBLINS
-GRADIUS
-Ice Climber
-Kid Icarus
-Kirby's Adventure
-Mario Bros.
-MEGA MAN 2
-Metroid
-NINJA GAIDEN
-PAC-MAN
-Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream
-StarTropics
-SUPER C
-Super Mario Bros.
-Super Mario Bros. 2
-Super Mario Bros. 3
-TECMO BOWL
-The Legend of Zelda
-Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

Ultimately I think the only people who will be interested in this are casual gamers or gamers that don't have a Wii or Wii-U but want access to these games.

I promise people, I'm not a Nintendo hater, but...no. This will do well, but it's no good imo. If they had allowed NES cartridges to run on it, then yeah I'd have picked it up, but not like it is now. And I understand why they didn't allow it to, but it just ends up feeling like another example of Nintendo making something good only to hold it back with unnecessary restrictions.

In the end, since it doesn't allow cartridges it ends up being another case of Nintendo desperately trying to find new ways to sell us the same games we've bought time and time again. If they offered more new stuff then the offering of old things would be a nice addition, but now it feels like old is all they offer us.

SuperCrash64 : People are paying way more than that online for used systems. Or at least near that amount with no games.

I think personally that it's a great idea and a cheap price point considering it comes with a controller and 30 games. What do these games cost to DL these days? Like 5$ apiece? I'm also super pumped that there's an HDMI port on it.

I'm totally getting one at some point, but I know they will be selling like hotcakes this Xmas season. Pretty impressed by the lineup of games. Hopefully they release more of these in the future.

I'm totally getting one at some point, but I know they will be selling like hotcakes this Xmas season. Pretty impressed by the lineup of games. Hopefully they release more of these in the future.

Looks like a bad deal to me.  Yes, 30 games for $60 works out to a very reasonable price per game... if it works.  I have very unfond memories of how easily those old cartridges could be damaged, and that picture makes me worry the entire player is going to crack easily when people say it's so small they'll just carry it everywhere.  Sixty bucks is a lot of money for something that you played a few games on, took to a couple gamer parties, then found out it had intercepted somebody's foot when you left it in your backpack and your backpack on the ground.

The list of games looks like they were trying to get some greats, some forgotten but good games (I rented StarTropics a couple of times myself) and a lot that are there to remind you of why these people are in Smash Brothers.  Not that there's necessarily anything wrong with that, especially if Ninja Gaiden gets into one.

I think the NES mini is a good way for people to play old school games that don't have internet access or a dependable computer. The price isn't that bad either, and you get to play 30 games. If I could get to where I had some steady income, I would go to some of the local game stores and see if they had it. I hope that Nintendo finds a way to revive the Gameboy, SNES, Gameboy Color, and Gameboy Advance games also. Although, I think they need to find a way to introduce more games to the system. Hopefully, Nintendo does this with more old consoles and adds more games to them.

luigi25 : That's true. And it is good for people that don't agree with emulation or have a Wii U to download these. A great addition would have been letting these things download classic NES games (maybe even GB/GBC games) from the eShop. I'd have even picked one up if that were a feature. Now I'll just pick up a real NES and some games, but then again I'm a collector so that kind of thing is important to me (owning the real system).

I think David said it best with "it just doesn't seem very logical to have this system hooked up and taking up space in my living room when it's only limited to 30 games and can't be expanded in any way (either through upgrades or by original cartridges)".
Maybe if it could be expanded to have more games or take original NES cartridges it would be cool, but as it stands it's just a cash grab by Nintendo, something that took no thought or effort to make, it's basically a Raspberry Pi (Google it if you don't know) with a customer OS, an emulator and a few roms on it, something you could make yourself for the same price (or less) AND include the entire NES catalog on.
As it stands the RGR here on vizzed is better value for money.

Also one thing that stands out (at least to me, but I'm a Megaman fan), what genius thought it would be a good idea to have the SECOND game in the Megaman franchise on this thing but not the first???

While the games they chose are pretty good, I agree with geeo.
They could have included a lot more.
I am sure they are just emulating them anyway, and the full set of NES roms is about 250MB... that's not a even a small HDD by today's standards. That's like an extremely small flash drive.

This is what would get me to buy it - If you had the option to go online with the thing, to a store, and be able to download other games that exsisted on the NES. Because they can't really put a slot in it to enter in the old cart's because they dont make them anymore. While yeah, some people *could* have the games as a physical game, its still not made by nintendo anymore. meaning they will never put a slot in it.

Im a litle mixed on if others will buy it. Because honestly, with all this Pokemon GO things, I dont think children/teenagers, which are probably one of their bigger demograpics over all, that only people that exsisted/played the original NES would be interested.Which was what, in 1987? And that was the last release date. And if my math is right, people would be in their early thirties by now., and even that isnt old enough considering at the time i'm sure older children were playing it during that time. I don't know. It may be a flop.
