Background: Road Runner is a Looney Tunes themed game released in 1985 by Atari Games. It follows the Road Runner and his persistent escape efforts from Wile E. Coyote.
Gameplay: You use the joystick to control the Road Runner, with how far you press and hold determining the bird's acceleration. You press the action button to hop. Hopping helps to leap over dangerous obstacles. The main goal is to outrun the Coyote and collect bird seed to keep up the pace. Along the way, you will come across several obstacles, such as trucks, boulders, cannonballs, dynamite, steel shot, mines, glue, cliffs, and invisible paint. Trucks run over you and are quite numerous. Boulders fall from the side of cliffs. While dangerous, quick wit and deception can allow you to trap Wile E. Coyote with them. Cannonballs are quick and painful, and cannot be avoided through moving. They must be hopped over, immediately. Dynamite is dropped from a helicopter and must be avoided. Eating steel-laced bird seed will make you magnetic and easier to catch. Lemonade however, gives a hefty bonus, and slows the Coyote down for a while. Mines kill you, but can be utilized to delay the Coyote. Glue slows you down, but can be escaped through jumping. Cliffs can be hazardous, but can be applied to the benefit of the player by tricking the Coyote. Invisible paint is both the most helpful advantage and biggest liability. Using it yourself helps avoid capture longer, but still makes you vulnerable. Wile E. Coyote can use it to make himself invisible, making him harder to spot and avoid, and you a bigger target. 6/10 Graphics: The graphics are incredible for 1985. Characters have tons of unique animations, and so do the inanimate objects. 10/10
Sound: The music is great, being able to utilize Road Runner sample music and all. It helps immerse you. 8/10
Addictiveness: The game, being so fast-paced and frantic, is obviously incredibly enjoyable. It gives you incentive. 6/10
Story: It's very simple, actually. The Road Runner wants seeds, and has to avoid Wile E. Coyote to eat some, while being goaded into a Steeplechase. 4/10
Depth: This game is very deep for it's time. It would seem like a typical racing game, but has tons of obstacles and strategies required for mastery. It's definitely something else. 8/10
Difficulty: "Difficult" doesn't even begin to describe this game. The controls can get shaky and imprecise at times, causing you to miss your bird seeds, and obstacles can come out of nowhere to destroy your progress, unfortunately. 8/10
Overall: Road Runner is a decently rewarding action racing arcade game. Play for a challenge. 7.7/10
