NASCAR Heat 2002 is one of the many NASCAR games that I have played in my lifetime. Is it one of my favorites? No, but that is because there are so many other completely amazing NASCAR games that have come out quite a bit later that tip the scale away from NASCAR Heat 2002. When the game was sold, it was pretty much the same type of game for the time. In this review I will go into what made this game stand out to me, and why I enjoyed it much more than the just previous NASCAR games.

Graphics: 9
Graphics were a standout to me and a valid reason why I liked this version of the NASCAR top down games more than previous. The graphics were moderately good pushing great for the age the game came out, and with the top down flow of the game instead of the from behind view of other NASCAR games, and this allowed it to take on a different perspective as the game went along. Making the graphics more simple made it also easier to make the game look better. This NASCAR game made tracks look like actual tracks instead of crummy cement placed in the middle of a wheat field, and allowed for extra features, such as rubble strips and higher contrast walls. Not to mention, the cars look like cars, and look great. The main part of the graphics that made it look the best was the fluency of the cars. When the cars moved, the game didn't lag or stay behind to try to correct the colors that stayed. When cars move, they move, and so do every part of the car. This seems like something obvious for a racing game, but back in the early 2000's, this wasn't so obvious and had to have lots of work put in to make the game playable. Graphics was one thing that this game got pretty much right, and why I game the game a 9 out of 10.

Sound: 7
For a racing game back in the dawn of racing games, I've got to give NASCAR heat 2002 some credit. If you look at some of the other games such as formula 1 racer and top gear, along with other games of the sort, they didn't sound great on all levels. Sure top gear had some of the best level music, but the engine sounds were not ear candy and couldn't be tuned out for the awesome music in the background. NASCAR heat 2002 had dimmed down, and not as high pitches, when it came to engine sounds. Many people enjoy a loud engine, but I like one that's nice and quiet but still gives a rumble, and that's what I got from NASCAR heat 2002. Aside from that, the sounds of hitting other cars, driving on grass and rumble strips, along with the music playing in the background of the game made it sound utterly flawless. The only problem was consistency, and sometimes cars would make different sounds than they're supposed to, but overall the sound actually does sound good. For a game that was released so long ago, I was pleasantly surprised with how well it sounded, and how my ears didn't bleed when I attempted to play the game, so overall, with all things considered, I decided the game deserved a 7 out of 10 for sound.

Addictiveness: 8
For a game that is so honestly simple, I find it to be very addicting and quite honestly fun to play. NASCAR, as all of you probably know, are pretty simple games that require running laps around a track as many times as you choose. What I find great about this one is that the tracks are different, they all have different shapes and sizes. This makes the game more interesting to play as you do want to figure out everything about every level, and you try to go as fast as you can. What makes this game in particular so addicting is the changes in the way the game is played, which makes it really fun, and just how fun it is to try and get the fastest laps as possible. I must say that I have played this game quite a while, for multiple hours at a time. I love how fast paced it is and how every time you lose a race or are unable to get a fast time, you want to play it again and again. That is why the game is somehow so addicting, and why I actually do enjoy playing it so much. Overall I find this games pretty dang addicting, so make sure you have plenty of time to play if you want to! The game is pretty addicting, but you can stop, so that's why I gave it an 8 out of 10.

Story: N/A
As a NASCAR game, the game doesn't exactly have much of a story, but trying to complete the tracks on all of the difficulties with all of the drivers is pretty much all there is of a story, as to why I gave it a non applicable.

Depth: 9
This is where the game gets interesting. This NASCAR game isn't like many of the other NASCAR games, as it provides different tracks other than your standard circle tracks, many of them are road courses with tons of twists and turns. Because there are so many tracks and drivers along with multiple difficulties to play with and in, the game has plenty to do. With the way it is set up, you'll be doing quite a lot playing races over and over to win and get best times, there is plenty to do and play to keep you quite busy. The game has so much to do, if you're ever bored, this would be a game you could play to take up quite a bit of time. What I loved about this was that depth is key to any racing game, because whenever the game doesn't have too much to do, the game isn't fun. Due to how much there is to do in the game, I gave the depth an overall of 9 out of 10.

Difficulty: 5
As a NASCAR game, and even just as a sports game, there are multiple types of difficulties, going from easy to very hard, which is why I split it. The easy mode is pretty easy, very easy to stay on track and very easy and winning is easy. When you get all of the way up to the top, the game starts getting hard and it's very hard to win. A good difficulty is where you can do both easy and hard and not get mad when you automatically have to do hard levels, and this is what makes a good game overall. That's why the game is so good to play.

Overall: 9.3
As a NASCAR fan, I am someone who really needs for there to be a lot of good things in a NASCAR game that allow me to love it more. The way that this game was made with fantastic flowing graphics that look so much better for their time, good sound that sounds where it supposed to be, a fun game that we want to play multiple times for a good amount of time, the fact that there is so much to play, and the fact that you can play on a whole much of different levels makes the game so good. This is really one of my favorite NASCAR games of the earlier years of the NASCAR games. Overall this game is one that I think really deserves a 9.3 as my final rating.

Good review man, I may not really care about NASCAR at all but I really liked this review. I hope to see you do more of these, because that would be fun.

You seem to like this game, and so I have to recommend two things.

One, if you haven't, play NASCAR: Dirt to Daytona. It is bar-none the best racing game ever made.

Two, coming out in a week or so, is NASCAR HEAT Evolution. It's the first Heat game in forever, and stands to be the first good NASCAR game in forever.

legacyme3 : I own Dirt to Daytona for the Gamecube and also have it on my computer with an emulator. The game is fantastic, which is why when I heard that monster was working with Dusenbury Martin to make HEAT Evolution, I was really pumped for that.

HEAT Evolution is coming out on Tuesday actually, and I am stoked for it. I've been ready to bring back that style of game for a long time, and making the game with Dusenbury Martin is going to be amazing (I did like NASCAR '15).

Barathemos :

I haven't bought a NASCAR game in so long, but I am buying this one. They know how to make a good racing game. I've seen the streams, and everything seems to be just perfect for a real simulation experience rather than the arcadey bull-s*** we've had in recent years.
