Well that's the thing, it specializes, in well it's obvious, gaming.

I've heard many times in recent TV shows on G4 and in magazines, that developers are saying once these next generation consoles come out they'll be slightly ahead of PC's for a good amount of time, and will provide us the best in gaming.

Of course though, yes I'm sure the PC will catch up, and eventually surpass them, as they did with the current consoles with Half-Life 2.

Well with the specs stated in this topic can still be outdone by a computer so that statement means nothing.

Also it would be much too risky to make such a product. All you would need to do is buy microsoft XP and a bigger harddrive and you got a top of the line PC. Computer manufactures could disown Microsoft for that entirelly.

Fact.

"Operates at >4GHz and capable of >256GFLOPS".

Keep in mind, that's specs only for the systems processor.

There are mainframes and computers than run faster than 4.0 gigherz I think its possible for a mainframe to have 64 processors and massive I/O rates but only a select few corporations get them.

Im not core hardware technician but im sure in a few months processors will surpass 4.0 GHz and im pretty sure theres PC workstations and of course servers that already do.

I know, I'm not doupting that it'll be long before PC's surpass these consoles, like they always do. (You can already get 4ghz computers ... overclocking+money, etc)

I was just giving out a fact, that what I had stated before in this thread on the first page, is true.

I remember back in the 200 Megahertz days people were putting together computers with 3 or 4 precessors. I remember reading about a coorperations that had a pc with 45 of them in the same computer. I don't think their hard to install, its just gets confusing because the pc doesn't know which processor to use for each specific task. So you have to assign them or whatever. Thats just what I've read and I havn't heard about people doing it recently.

Here is a site with the PS2 processor specs

SMP(Symmetrical Multi processing) is used almost everywhere, mostly to split the workload in a server. As for the method that determines which processor does what I have no idea.

Nobody is sure about the name. I have heard all three of those. Lately I think I have heard it being called Xeonon. So, they might of made that the offical name. E3 should be a huge blowout for all three systems.

um yeah a problem to this is what about the pricing. i mean a freakin 2ghz is expensive as it is this means the console is going to be expensive as hell. plus Xbox 2 is probally going to have a better graphic card. i mean an ati Radeon is not going to mean s*** in the next few months.

That is sorta what we have been talking about. We all kinda said we thought it would be kinda overkill. But it is getting almost pointless to speculate.

They are going to have to figure out a way to minimize cost for all systems. I know Nintendo will. That is the thing they are great at. I just hope we don't have the small discs this time.

We happened to be covering systems with multiple processors last week in shop.

Theres no way im going to have the cash to dish out for a new system anytime before 2006. I think ill buy the new Playstation and the Microsoft consoles. Ill leave the Nintendo to my brother.

I dont like the small discs very much, their had to keep track of sometimes.

Doubt it. The only problem with the discs to me is they didn't hold enough. Like my roomate has Tiger Woods 2004 and it is two discs because there are so many courses.

Also, they have to compress FMV's and sometimes they look bad because of it.

DVD-9 format holds alot more data than those smaller discs, if Nintendo makes the switch to normal sized ones I doubt there will be any backward compatibility with the GC on the new console.
