this is what I'm worried about. Based on the way lots of the laws are written currently in Canada the individuals opinion about their gender overrides every other consideration in society. That includes the safety of women in shelters who are homeless or escaping abusive relationships. Now because of laws like the one in Ontario a man who claimed to be transgender was able to go in there and assault a woman. Of course he'll go to jail for it but punishment after the crime is great for society in general but horrible for that woman.

Change the case to a child in a school being sexually assaulted by someone who falsely claimed to be trans-gendered (or transsexual - whichever term is best). The way these guidelines are written basically opens the door to allow something like this to happen. It may not happen in EVERY school but the fact that similar laws have created a case like this already pushes me to resist stuff like this as much as possible. ESPECIALLY because it will affect kids.

And here I thought Canada was a paradise. Turns out it's even worse off than the US as far as this social justice/politically correct farce goes. Think I'll move to Mexico. Or better yet, I'll move to Japan and live in a 100sqft apartment and be shunned by society. At least then I won't have to listen to these idiots rambling on about their pronouns, their made up genders, and their generally braindead antics

EX Palen : I agree with what you said about it coming to fast. It did. I would prefer a million times more if they started doing something like this with a little by little, giving people time to react and adapt.

"And by the way, I really doubt a 5 year old kid knows the difference between gender and sex. As you can see, not even a percentage of the adult population actually understands it, how can you expect a kid that is barely starting school to know such things?"

I don't expect them to know. However, it would be better for them to learn about it early on, as to not become one of those adults that doesn't understand it. Kids have to be given our best, instead of what's left. The more education and knowledge we give them, the better prepared they will be for later.

geeogree : I know that. That's what I've been saying, that something like this might happen. But, there's really not much we can do about that, now can we?
Sure, we can limit it, or prohibit it, but that isn't fair for transgender people, now is it? There's no fair way to go about this. Which is why I agree now, the rules can and should be a bit more strict on this.

(BTW, the term trans-gendered would be better, since we're talking about transgenders. Transexuals is more along the lines of surgery, hormone therapy, and all of that to try and imitate the opposite biological sex as close as possible.)

So this is South Park's sex ed episode all over again. Look, I am gay myself so I know the stigma involved when that kind of questioning goes in someone's head. HOWEVER, can we at least wait until the child hits puberty and actually becomes conscious about his or her identity?

I did "demystification" workshops in schools - HIGH schools - telling about my story and keeping it PG. I believe there were some workshops for kids grade 5 or 6, but they were very rare. IF a child does have such questioning, can the psychologist or nurse not be of any help rather than rush to a conclusion that this child is necessarily transgender? The worst thing that can happen to them, IF they really are that way, is to be left alone.

This is basically the Caitlyn Jenner effect. It is not out of social responsibility they are doing this,it is out of timing and jumping on the bandwagon. I might be close minded, but at the same time, there are reasons why men act like men and women act like women. Now if the kid is genuinely transgender (born a shemale) then I agree that some things are going to be awkward and exceptions may have to be made. But if it someone that identifies with the gender opposite of their own, this is not something to be encouraged. If anything they need discipline to help them see that they are wrong and need to be educated.

After reading through this entire thread, I think the conversation would be helped by getting a few basics out of the way,
1). Would this have an adverse effect?
The problem is, if the trans gender student is scared of actually identifying as trans gender, which could further separate them from society, IE they identify as the opposite gender and get bullied for it.
2).what exactly is the difference between trans gender and transsexual?
I recall someone pointing out not many people know the difference, but does not specify the difference that is actually there.
3). How many government regulations are in place?
Maybe a government regulation that will be put into effect will force someone identifying as the opposite gender to be escorted to and from the bathroom/ change room (with due privacy of course) so things like sexual assault wont happen.
4). Does it actually HELP anyone?
as said in question 1, would this even help the intended audience? The objective (if I'm not mistaken) is to make trans gender people feel more "normal", but if they identify as trans gender, does that not lead to bullying/teasing from the "normal" students (normal is in quotes due to the varying ideas of normal)?
5). Is it even relevant?
in the end, do you go to the bathroom to know you're a boy, or know you're a girl? I think this is just a case of politicians wanting to do something to be busy, and it won't do much to affect anyone's lives

I've had my rant and this doesn't actually affect any of you so I'm going to close this thread. I don't want any more notifications about it.
