https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_4UUHYBVLI Kingdom Hearts is one of the few games I ever played in the PS 2. Although it is not really my kind of game – button smashers, as I call them – I still enjoyed the game for its nice graphics, good story (albeit a little childish) and good sound. The game is fully voiced, and Disney even recruited Katherine Beaumont, who did the original Alice voice! Now, I will review the soundtrack. 1 - Dearly Beloved The intro screen theme. It is nice and relaxing with the piano and also the faint hit of waves crushing on the shore. 2 - Hikari, Kingdom Orchestra Instrumental Version I can not quite remember where the original track is played. Nevertheless, the orchestration is very grand and epic. The flutes after the introduction are light, right before the orchestra explodes again. 3 - Dive Into The Heart Destati Your introduction to the world of Kindgom Hearts, where you choose your strength and weakness. The choir is an excellent addition, making the track very epic (there are barely a few violins and low piano notes in the background). Towards the end of the vocal track you can hear a brief male choir that adds a nice touch of drama. After it the musical arrangements kick in with a dramatic fashion. You know that things are getting serious when the Heartless appear. 4 - Destiny Islands A very nice and exotic track. You really feel that everything is well and peaceful around you, as if you were in a Club Med Resort. You can feel the blazing sun tanning your skin while you sip your drink in a coconut. 5 - Bustin' Up On The Beach An upbeat version of the preceding track, for the few fights you will have. It somehow lost its exotic tones, but the piano arrangements are excellent and show you that there is much more action going on. 6 - Mickey Mouse Club March When you see the only glimpse of the, er, Disney Castle? Anyway people who watched the show will easily recognize the theme, which is very joyful with its piccolo and brass. The drum beat in the background reminds us that more dramatic things are indeed happening, but nothing like, say, the Imperial March. 7 - Treasured Memories One of those numerous short, slow tracks. It must have been played only once because I do not remember it. Nevertheless, its sad tones are relaxing. 8 - Strange Whispers I believe this is when Sora first looks at a wooden panel that seems to be hiding something. The strings play very low notes, fitting the title perfectly well. Who knows what lies beyond that? 9 - Kairi i Not the best version (1 of 3) of the theme. The main flute is too faint to be enjoyable, and the guitar is too slow. The piano is OK at best. 10 - It Began With A Letter When Donald Duck and Goofy read Mickey’s letter. It sounds too much like a music box, which would be strange when 2 loyal subject read about their king’s going away on an important mission. The staccato violin in the background get a little annoying in the end. 11- A Walk In Andante Not too sure when this is played either. But the track is not interesting anyway; the bassoon in the background sounds repetitive and the main flutes play a childish toon I do not like. Just skip it. 12 - Night Of Fate Ah, MUCH better. The violins are very upbeat, which is perfect for this night when the Heartless invade Destiny Island. The piano is also played very quickly, which heightens the dram along with the drums in the background. 13 - Destiny's Force A boss battle theme. The arrangements are a perfect fit for such a theme. There is low-key piano in the background, occasional bursts of trumpets and brass and dramatic violins playing. Sometimes the piano becomes more obvious, improving the track greatly. 14 - Where Is This When Sora first wakes up in Traverse Town? Anyway it sounds just like a walk in Andante after a very long introduction. So just skip it. 15 - Traverse Town A very nice jazzy track. The slow drums, the piano and the clarinet (?) are all play nicely. You could swear you are in a bar sipping a martini. 16 - The Heartless Has Come Not sure when this is played. But just by looking at the title, it does not sound merely as dramatic in the first half of the loop. It is getting more dramatic in the second half, but since the loop is too short you will want to skip it. 17 - Shrouding Dark Cloud NOW this is what I call dramatic. This is yet another boss battle where the violins are played in a very dramatic way. The drum is heavier and the loop concludes with brass that heighten the drama greatly. 18 - Blast Away Gummy Ship i Your highly pixelated ship’s theme. It does not sound very epic like a ship theme should, but it is enjoyable. It is upbeat, the main “flute” has a happy feeling and the violins in the second part heighten the drums’ “military” feeling. 19 - Tricksy Clock When first exploring Wonderland. You can indeed hear the clock, but I find the arrangements annoying and repetitive. 20 - Welcome To Wonderland A very nice homage to the surreal ambiance of the land. The low woods make the perfect background while the xylophone and strings in the main track are perfect for this goofy world. 21 - To Our Surprise The battle theme. It is more upbeat and frankly sounds even sillier (in a good way). I love how the arrangements use staccato violins. And at the end of the loop, the drummer goes out of his way to show you that you need to focus your attention! 22 - Turning The Key When locking the world. It is brief but really sounds like you have accomplished something great. It also sounds a little magical with the choir. 23 - Olympus Coliseum The perfect arrangements when entering such a grand building. The music is “quieter” than the following track, but you can nevertheless feel that there are great thing to do. Think of the track as an “announcement of the program.” 24 - Road To A Hero An upbeat version of the preceding track. The tempo is already much quicker, since you must succeed in a set amount of time to be congratulated by Hercules’ Manager. I prefer this track, actually since it sounds much more heroic. 25 - Go For It When fighting your way into the best of the Coliseum. The core of the loop is different from the main theme, but it sounds very heroic nonetheless. The trumpets are very loud and heroic, and the drums in the background keep you on the edge of your seat. 26 - No Time To Think I believe this it during a very dramatic fight in the Coliseum. Although it is highly short and repetitive (think Run in Final Fantasy IV), it is nevertheless appropriate. 27 - Deep Jungle The arrangements really make you feel that you are in the jungle. There is some kind of indigenous flute played all through the track, and also “African drums” in the background. 28 – Having A Wild Time The battle theme. It was a little overdone with the electric guitar, but the drums are at the right tempo and volume to show you that danger is right around the corner. 29 - Holy Bananas When you travel with Tarzan through the jungle. It kept more of its “jungle” feel than the previous track with upbeat xylophones in the background. The quicker tempo shows that sliding on trees is no picnic walk. 30 - Squirming Evil Another boss battle theme, but not the best one. Sure, it sounds very dramatic as it should but the arrangements do not use many brass, and the piano notes do not sound as dramatic as the preceding themes. 31 - Hand In Hand The battle theme in Traverse Town. The mix of piano and strings in the main track make for a good dramatic mix. The drum in the background makes the tempo just right. 32 - Kairi ii A little slower than the preceding theme, but both themes are so similar that I usually skip this one of plagiarizing. 33 – Merlin's Magical House I wonder why there is organ in the background. However the main track has an excellent magical feel to it. There is also staccato violin that add an interesting touch. 34 - Winnie The Pooh Wow, this is an EXCELLENT “fairy” tale theme. The introduction is a little grand, but the rest of the loop is perfect for the care-free ambiance of the Hundred Acres Wood. It is surprising that low-tone wind instruments can carry such lightness of heart. 35 - Bounce O Rama When facing a “trial”. The main track still fits the light-hearted feeling of the place, sounding even a little goofy at time. The background piano notes, although repetitive, help remind you that there is something to do. 36 - Just An Itty Bitty Too Much Does Winnie chug on honey at some point? Anyway the track is very upbeat with staccato violin and other arrangements to still show where you are. 37 - Once Upon A Time A very nice music box track, perfect for the conclusion of this light-hearted story. I find the arrangements even better when you watch the book being closed, with Sora holding Piglet’s hand. 38 - Shipmeisters Humoresque When making you custom ship. I never liked this track; the background noise is downright annoying (especially with its echo) while the main track sounds too random to be interesting. Just skip it. 39 - Precious Stars In The Sky When choosing which world to explore. The beat is kind of slow, which is perfect for the immensity of space you are facing, albeit a little repetitive. 40 - Blast Away Gummy Ship ii A more dramatic an upbeat version of the theme. The theme is good, but since it is an “intermediary” one I tend to prefer the preceding and following ones. 41 - A Day In Agrabah The arrangements are perfect for an Arabic ambiance. The main track in the first part of the loop have that Arabic feel that is hard to describe, while the second part even incorporates hand clapping. I love the cellos in the background, which do remind me of the Aladdin soundtrack. 42 - Arabian Dream The battle theme. The “Arabic” xylophone make the ambiance even more appropriate, and the trumpets blend in perfectly, heightening the drama. I also love the cymbals in the background. 43 - Villains Of A Sort When the “Council of Villains” meets. The tone is slow and low, perfect to show these evil creatures plotting. The background violins stretch their notes, while the main piano plays a few low notes to make a more dramatic ambiance. 44 - A Very Small Wish Inside Monstro the whale. Not my favorite track, but it nevertheless feels appropriate. The staccato violins tell you that you are inside something gigantic while at the same time having a strange goofy feeling of some sort. 45 - Monstrous Monstro The battle theme. I prefer this track, but the background winds (and the tambourine) tend to get a little annoying. The main flute, however, is very upbeat and perfect for a battle theme. 46 - Friends In My Heart A variation of Kairi’s theme, which sounds MUCH better. The piano is slow and relaxing, and the occasional violins in the background add just the right touch. 47 - Under The Sea The same theme you hear in The Little Mermaid, albeit with a more exotic touch to it with its combination of xylophones and Jamaican drums (although it is faint). I love the trumpet “singing” the under the sea part. 48 - An Adventure In Atlantica The battle theme. The track keeps its exotic feel, and actually feels more exotic since the background track has more of the xylophone. You can also hear the Jamaican drum more clearly. However the drum in the background feels a little annoying. 49 - A Piece Of Peace Another unmemorable track I can not remember. It is slow and sad, and the “music box” track sound very repetitive. Just skip it. 50 - An Intense Situation I can not remember the track, but it certainly matches the title (when Ursula transforms?). There is constant drum in the background and the strings sound very dramatic. 51 - The Deep End Another boss battle, and a very intense one at that. The low-key strings are constant through the track to heighten the drama; the bells also add a nice touch. The last part of the loop became a little too quiet with the piano, but it is overall an excellent track. 52 - This Is Halloween Yes, the same track from the Night Before Christmas. You do not hear the voices, and the beat is a little slower, but it still feels right. The drums in the background make for a good Halloween ambiance. 53 - Spooks Of Halloween The battle theme. I prefer the main track arrangements (which are more upbeat) here than for 52. The bits of organ you can hear are also good for a Halloween track. 54 - Oopsy Daisy Very brief and repetitive. It does not even sound like an Oopsy Daisy moment. Just skip it. 55 - Captain Hook's Pirate Ship One of the best tracks of the album. The bassoon is spectacular and intriguing. You can also hear low-tone piano keys and staccato violins in the background, perfect for a “fugitive” theme. 56 - Pirate's Gigue The battle theme. It does indeed sound like a gigue with upbeat winds in the main track while the constant drum in the background gives the right tempo. 57 - Neverland Sky If this was not part of the original Peter Pan movie, it is a shame. The violin arrangements are played in such a magical way, you could swear you are flying. The tempo with the brass in the background might be a little too quick, but it is nevertheless one of the best tracks of the album. 58 - Kairi iii A more dramatic version of the theme, where you see an old lady talking about light and darkness. The main track sounds like a sad music box, and the tempo is much slower to give a more dramatic touch. 59 - Blast Away Gummy Ship iii The final ship theme. It sounds highly dramatic and militaristic, showing you that you are nearing the end of your quest. It is far for the light-heartedness of the first theme and I love the contrast. 60 - Hollow Bastion A surprisingly relaxing track for such a major dungeon. The harp adds a magical feeling to the track, while the background male choir adds a touch of drama to remind you that you are in a dungeon. Finally the quick piano balances both. 61 - Scherzo Di Notte The battle theme. The piano is heavier in this track, and the violins sound more dramatic. The flute about midway through the loop adds a strange but good quiet tone. 62 - Forze Del Male The “major boss” battle theme, and a very dramatic one at that. The piano is very heavy, there is a loud male choir, the drums accelerates the tempo and there is even organ. Slight caveat: the loop concludes strangely, as if the composer could not integrate it better. 63 – Miracle It is so short that I can not remember when it was played. 64 - End Of The World A slower version of Destati with the same choir arrangements. It sound strange for a last dungeon, but the track in itself is excellent. It sounds both dramatic and grand, especially when you first enter the place with a horizon full of clouds. 65 - Fragments Of Sorrow The battle theme. It sounds much better than the preceding track. The background track has very upbeat bassoon and drum, while the violins play high notes. The choir is still there singing Destati, but also makes other sounds that make a good addition. 66 - Guardando Nel Buio The final boss battle. After a dramatic choir entrance, the theme becomes quiet. It is perfect because the first part happens in almost complete obscurity. Then the choir kicks in again with dramatic wood and brass arrangements. An excellent such track, whose tempo will keep you on the edge of your seat as it has for me. 67 - Beyond The Door The arrangements remind me of Dancing Mad, which sounds rather strange now that you conquered darkness. Just skip it. 68 - Always On My Mind It sounds like a music box with annoying flute and strings. Also the flute sounds like it does not want to play the rest of its notes. Skip it to the next track, which sounds much better. 69 - March Caprice For Piano And Orchestra Ah, THIS is what the track should sound like. Friends in My heart was meant to be played with real instruments. The main piano track, although played a little loud is still good. The violins and other strings complete the Marc part perfectly. 70 - Hand In Hand Reprise The original was so much better. This one sounds much too faint and not upbeat enough. Skip it. 71 - Dearly Beloved Reprise A music box cover. I kind of love this one; it is more relaxing than the version with piano. 72 - Having A Wild Time Previous Version It sounds a little more orchestrated than the previous one. However this version also has a lower volume, which does not fit a battle theme well. 73 – Destati The theme played by a real orchestra and sung by a real choir. Because of that the arrangements are much better. Too bad the PS 2 sound chip could not allow it; the dramatic touch is so much more efficient. 74 - Sora's Sacrifice Another track I did not care about. Despite having realistic piano, the arrangements sound like a cheap music box. Just skip it. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8uMWhq02mf4kXD5mgG0t3YxLaFnAAQ69 These four tracks, which are part of the original game, were released after. I hate it when gaming companies do not release all the tracks at the same time… Anyway here they are. 1- One-Winged Angel When fighting you-know-who in the Coliseum. The voices sound better thanks to better sound technology. However I found the overall arrangements to be inferior because of their quicker tempo. The “Sors inanis, et inanis” part sound too quiet, while the “gloriosa generosa” ladies do not articulate well. 2 - A Night on the Bare Mountain Yes, the very same classic composed by Modest Mussorgsky. This track actually helped me rediscover this classical gem, because the KH track is much too quick to carry the drama of the original track. Listen to Fantasia to see what I mean; fighting that demon DEMANDS a slow, highly dramatic tempo. 3 – Disappeared I am not sure when this was played, but the arrangements are excellent. It starts quietly, with very loud and dramatic strings kicking in pretty soon. It reminds me a little of Guardando Nel Buio when the faint piano plays. It also reminds me of Summon Monster Battle in Final Fantasy X thanks to the very quick tempo. 4 - Another Side Is there anything playing? For like, one minute the arrangements are so quiet I can not hear a thing. When the sound is turned up, it becomes an uninteresting “dance” mix with some piano. Just skip it. Final diagnosis: the Kingdom Heart soundtrack is a definite must-buy for video game lovers. Not only does it include references to some great classics, but it also makes great classics of it own.

There is constant drum in the background and the strings sound very dramatic. 51 - The Deep End Another boss battle, and a very intense one at that.

So let me ask you something. Do you honestly consider these posts to be "reviews"? |

This is a learning process even for me as there has never been anything similar in the past. I am opened to criticism to make them better. |

janus : Well to me they seem like word padding. I mean you don't really say anything other than a short generic comment about each song and basically nothing in depth about any of it. I don't mean this to come off as rude, but I have to be realistic.
A good portion of these posts of yours are just the titles of the song themselves, and they seem in poor taste to be posted during the TdV, especially coming from a staff writer. Jordanv78 : I also post them on regular times, albeit at a lower frequency. All right, let me see if I can have more "insights" on the tracks. Were there tracks that were better-revised or were all of them "word padding." |

janus : I'm thinking that overall the format needs to be improved here. I mean anyone can write a generic sentence about a song. Like this-
Thiller - Michael Jackson- Man this song is great. I like the haloween-y feeling to it. Also really enjoy the parts with Vincent Price. His voice is creepy. See what I mean? that took me about 10 seconds. And I didn't really give any opinion or say anything that anyone listening couldn't figure out on their own. A review is supposed to either tell someone if they should listen to it or not. Not just write random comments about it. To me, these threads read more like a Facebook comment section than a review. Kingdom Hearts has some of my favorite music, arguably though Kingdom Hearts II, which had a higher budget has better songs. The question really is, which game has a better opening song? The question really is, which game has a better opening song? |
