Between my first year (1999-00) to my final year (2011-12) and to this year (2015-16), I can surly say that things are a whole lot different between the 3 years.

In 1999-00, there wasn't a whole lot on the food restrictions (like you can get ice cream and other high sugar foods then they all cut down on that stuff and by 2011-12, you hardly got any good foods (mostly all those so called "healthy foods", now after I left, you can't eat or drink anything that's unhealthy.

Also, it's not just the foods, but also how students learn their stuff, I remember my first year, we did a bit of traditional school work (although computers been around 5 years and we early use them) and my final year in school, half of my school works were on the computer, and now this year in schools, 3/4 of all school works are in computer.

Things sure are different in schools between 1999 to today.

How far into the past are we talking about? When I was in elementary school (2006-2011), there were no such things known as chrome books or all this advanced technology we see at schools today. Now that I'm in my freshman year of high school, I've noticed a couple things changing. We can now check our grades with the use of the internet instead of having to get a physical copy of our grade card. We can keep constant check on updates to our grades. And sometimes, my school allows the use of mobile devices for our class work. I'd say most of this kind of stuff came into view around 2010 or so, but I can't be certain.

Well over here the Scottish government has implemented Curriculum for Excellence so yes a lot has changed over the last 13 years I have been at school. The food you get at lunch has a 3 week rota and is a lot healthier than what we used to get (Scotland has a really big obese problem) so I hope that works out in the end but it may not as a lot of kids go out to the local fish and chip shops and I can't imagine the rubbish that is in that.

Unlike lunar phones are not aloud at all (I can understand why. There is nothing worse than somebody's phone going off when you are doing work). Teachers will snatch it off you immediately if they see it. We now have a number of assessments we must do before we are allowed to do the exam and we have to pass them all. This could range from powerpoint presentations to open book questions etc.

From what I can see in the news, parents have (seemingly) become completely deresponsibilized towards their children. They seem to expect school to teach them everything, as if THEY had no responsibility.

At the same time, they seem to think that their offsprings are completely faultless, siding with them whenever they are blamed.

Fortunately education at large is improving thanks to school choice. Private, charter, home... The state's monopoly over education is fading away and everyone is a winner at it. I certainly profited from in (starting in the mid 90s). In order to compete with private schools, public schools in my area started to offer programs like sports, music... and languages. I got into this one and I most fortunately did the regular English programs in three year; it was debilitatingly easy. I also learned Spanish, which proved to be useful since I married a Dominican whose family (about 50%) knows no other language than this one.

IgorBird122 : Yeah it seems so which is why I am asking to help me better understand of what schools are today. Since they are different. I have come to see what the differences are and with studying, lessons and more have become a lot more better than they were from the past. That's what we wanted. Even if bulling still exists. Its not as much right? If I am wrong please correct me on that.

LunarDarkness2 : I'm sorry I should had at least said from what year. The past as in from when you started from primary school, into secondary school and then collage etc. Yeah I remember there were not such things as of that. Things were...pretty much old school back then. Man I even still remember the day I used xp in school for work and stuff. As I got into collage I saw flat screen computers taking over which was popular back then. :/

DylanMcKaig : Well that's good we had that too but...not as good at today's school foods I guess right? Its really good things have changed for schools for the better. Its what we want children and us to go through to have a good experience and not a bad one at that. The worst thing is some children avoiding school because they are not getting the beneficial needs of feeling either safe, well kept and enjoyment as well at home.

janus : Yeah that's what I kinda figured and its really, really sad that has happened. Parents of today don't try to raise their own children or if there are ones that do they raise them wrongly. I wouldn't be surprised if children of today prefer school than hope. Because they are not being given the proper care to be raised and love by the parent. '-'

For what I can say, when my neices went to my old middle school, I noticed that the entire school was fenced in and there was only one way in and out. Considering how strict the school is and you're only allowed to take a bathroom break while in class only 5 times every three months I wasn't shocked to see that fenced the whole school. At least is safer but they became stricter.

The most significant change I've noticed about my school is that now instead of having to take all of our state tests on paper, we can take most of them on computer. I don't like that because of what happened a group of students last year at my high school.

They were taking their state test on the computer and the electricity went out for a couple minutes, so they all lost their data and had to start over.

However, the computer tests have been more convenient otherwise. I still find it easier to concentrate on a paper test, but the computer tests are formatted better.

Probably the most significant change I've noticed is the increasing openness towards technology.

When I started elementary school in 2006-07 there was a very hostile attitude towards computers and phones and the like. Even printers were treated with apprehension. If kids were spotted with tech anywhere on their being they were going to feel the burn. This sentiment intensified with the release of the iPhone and the smartphone boom.

Nine years later and I have found in all places of education computers and phones are seen in a much more positive light. Obviously excessive phone use during class is frowned upon but otherwise educators are a lot more willing to use modern tech.

Emphasis on use of technology. Back in elementary school, there was none whatsoever. We did everything on normal paper, wrote everything down, and repeated the process though. Going into middle school, we started using our computers and phones for research and reports, and right now in high school? Pretty much everything we do involves some sort of technology, whether it be Ipads, phones, computers, etc. We even turn in most of our homework online.

Well these are things I have observed other the years. Granted I have been out of High school now for about 12 years and out of college for 3/4 years.

I think the most obvious thing are at least here in the USA is government has gotten involved in everything too involved to be honest. Govt is telling students what tests they have to pass, teachers can't fail students or they lose their jobs, and students are told what they have to eat.

When I was in school we had recess, there were no standardized testing, no common core. I felt like learning was going on. Teachers taught they way they wanted too. We got to do labs, didn't have to worry about failing standardized testing, and as a result teachers were not afraid of losing their jobs. If a student was struggling they could go to tutoring or take a summer course. If a student was not doing their work then they failed no ifs and buts.

Also we did not have government telling us what to eat. For example pizzas, sodas were not banned. In fact the schools often served hamburgers, pizza and you could get a salad from the salad bar. We also got 1 hour of exercise so what we ate we burned off.  You could also bring you lunch too with pizza or whatever you ate. It was good times back then. Also the exercise we got was great too. We played dodge ball, baseball, lifted weights, and walked in gym classes. There was no political correct stuff like dodge ball might be a way for some kids to hit other kids, or baseball could lead to plunking. Yes some school systems have made that argument.

Also if a student was being a trouble maker. After 3 offenses he or she was sent to the principles office and met the paddle

Just seems like school is not what is used to be. My friends who are teachers are frustrated. Because they can't teach due to common core. From what they have told me if a child gets the right answer to a question but does not do it the way CC wants it to be done they have to count it wrong. Also their complaint is CC is modeled that everyone learns the same way. In addition, they are afraid to fail students and have to teach weeks to pace the standard test. If students fail then the govt comes in and fires everybody. They have also said that students are throwing the lunches away. Some schools have even banned students bringing pizza and soft drinks from home. I have also read were students do not get to exercise like we did because they have to have study time on how to pass the tests.

So yeah, When govt started to dictate how schools are ran, what tests students have to pass, how teachers have to teach, and what students can eat. Our schools have gone down the drain. I'm glad this was not going on when I was in school. I see now why a lot of parents home school their children. I forgot to add that some schools if a child misses more then 10 days even if they have a letter written by a medical professional they still get drug to court. Lot of children with chronic illnesses are being home schooled for that very reason

I really feel that schools have gotten worse. They have cut so much funding, which affects the teachers pay, and have cause them not to care as much. I have heard from a lot of people that, there are so many outdated textbooks, and that is a problem.  At the top of the list, kids have gotten more violent and out of hand. It scares some kids, and they dent want to go to school.

I started elementary school in 2004. One of my parents still teaches there, so I have known completely how it has changed.

Here in Georgia, there have been changes. Funding has been slashed for arts in primary school. Tests have been invalidated and replaced by even more ridiculous and incompetent tests. The new emphasis on data and growth has destroyed any creative element in primary schools, it's all about results. That's not what elementary school is about. Everything has been redesigned for safety. Teachers are evaluated on results. On numbers. Arbitrary numbers. Their jobs depend on making kids actually try. Kids get richer, snottier, and more distracted. Parents interfere far too much, they disrupt the teachers with ridiculous complaints. Complaints get teachers fired. Kids already years above the curriculum not showing growth get teachers fired. Opinions get teachers fired. Teachers quit before they can get fired, or get fired before they can do that. People are way too sensitive, mention the Holocaust before high school and parents threaten to sue. Mention race and ethnicity differences before high school and parents threaten to sue. Parents have warped schools. Administrators have warped schools. Ignorant people have warped schools.

Elementary nostalgia is gone. I don't even recognize it anymore.

Where has my life gone. Where have kids gone.

I never expected such replies on this thread.... oh well never the less.

jlove92 : Yeah I can see where you are coming from with this, as schools nowadays will probably have fences and stuff. I'm sure they have reasons. Or maybe not as I wouldn't know this properly myself. I just hope at least your nieces are having a fun time there?

PacmanandMariofan : Yeah I figured as much because the future is changing. So of cause like most of the stuff will be on tech. Imagine what will come of that in the next 10 years or so. :/

IStillSeeTheX : Its what is changing the world for the better and soon tech will rule the world and not in a bad way. So a lot of things will have to progress for the better and all. Even if its something we may not be able to get used too yet. Teachers will forbid phones they always did when I was in school as well.

Chromatic :  I remember in my days of school a lot of things we did our work with pen and paper I enjoyed that more. But there were necessary needs, that's we did some projects on the computer and stuff. Were coming to the near future so...there will no longer be times in school that pens and papers will be done as much. If none at all. '-'

tornadocam : Wow that's a long reply you have there....thats really sad to hear about some of these situations in a way. Why did the gov did that? It kinda doesn't make sense. Its either they had a reason or maybe not a good one at that. Yeah that's the main reason most parents how home school their children so its better that way. And wouldn't have to go through trouble at school for no reason. :/

Droog : Some or most people have said that so I can understand your response to that. But then there are some people who still enjoy school so its kind of a mixed review battle still going on with that. And yes I can even agree kids have gotten a lot more violent. Its really sad how some come to be that way.

Hidden Phantom : I can understand that also in a way I've read up some of these on Google and stuff. Its sad how things can change for the worst. And its not the great school you once grew up in. And more like becomes something else. '-'

I was completely floored when I went back to school in 2012 (grad '06) and realized we were now taking notes off of this computerized overhead. I remember the teacher having these see-through papers that they put on a regular overhead, and often the ink would smear lol. How much technology is really changing the whole learning environment is just kinda shocking.

For anybody who's interested, this is what it looked like: https://www.google.ca/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwi8g93-l6fLAhXDnYMKHW6uC8QQjRwIBw&url=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FOverhead_projector&psig=AFQjCNFgxgSWBlyQNDMC9bge27vr-IoP4g&ust=1457186262293539

idk if it's the school I go to or whatever, but I see phones getting used at my school a lot, even in class. It's a rule that you can't have phones, but I guess since the phones wasn't that disruptive (most of the time), teachers sorta didn't mind. I honestly don't mind either.

Anyways, there's a difference with schools nowadays with yes, technology (my school has IPad carts that gets used sometimes), but if we're talking waaaay back, then I guess there's a difference with testing. Now, I've been tested a ton in the years I've went to school, but according to some teachers, there were less testing before there were all these standards and bleh. It seemed nicer when there less testing too, because there was more time for learning, and less boring tests :c.

From what I've heard from teachers that have been teaching our school for years we used to have classes like home ec and driving classes that we could take but sadly those valuable classes were probably replaced with classes they felt was more important for highschoolers.

In the short time since I've started school, I've noticed many changes. There is a lot more technology present. When I started going to school we had only three computers in the back of the room, and today, we have rooms full of computers and Chromebook carts. We started to take our standardized tests on Chromebooks now. But the food has also changed. The food used to be made without guidelines, but now there are many restrictions that make the food not so great, yet I still don't bring in my own lunch.
Going back to my earlier point on the new standardized tests, they do come with harder standards set for education, and I don't like it. The Common Core standards, as they are called, are stressful and exhausting. But, yeah, some changes for the good and some changes for the not so good.

Hey! I am surprised that no one has said this but back in my parents day the art classes were very different. These days you don't have creative freedom, and it is STRUCTURED. So as a result there is a set of projects that you must do and you don't get to have say on the project. Like lets say the assignment is related to sculpting, and you have to make a sculpture that is a usable object (like a cup), but it must be an animal. Not all artists are going to be sculptors, just like not all of artists are going to be painters. Back in my parents day we did not have all of this mumbo jumbo, instead students would have the freedom to do anything artistic they wanted to. So they could practice what they needed to practice on, and not feel any pressure about it.
