Alright this is a kind of logical "game", if you will. Where everyone tries to come up with a topic that is too hard for a philosopher to answer. It's pretty similar to Stomp the Professor.

Anyone is welcome to join in --even if your not a professional Philosopher. Just debate however you can! You may use sources but it's not required unless you are quoting/paraphrasing or using a not-too-well-known so theory (other than your own creation).

How to play:

  1. A topic will be posted
  2. A person tries to debate it
  3. Another person can challenge another person's views and counter it with their own. OR
  4. Put forth a new view
  5. If a person is stomped they have to say how and why

Rules to this thread:

  • Only I can post topics. If you wish for a certain topic to be debated you can PM me using "RE: Stomp the Philosopher".  They maybe be one topic or VS topics.
  • All debates must follow site rules and forum rules
  • Show some respect. If you say something you feel might offend someone because you just can't find a nice way to put it? Let us know! We'll understand.
  • If you are outright rude, you'll be warned. If you do it again, you'll be asked to leave. If you come back after a few days and are nice you can stay. If you come back and start trouble I will get a MOD in here faster than you can hope to run!
  • This is an open-forum meaning everyone can say what they think and no one has the right to treat them badly for it.

A new Topic will be posted once a week and the topic post linked here:  TBA

Inner peace, what a great topic, and one I've been learning more about.

I was particularly down, sinning, because I was worried about one thing, till me and my Jewish friend decided to start reading the book of Hebrews. What I found in that book came to be of particular help and guidance, though I still have much negative thinking to beat out of my head. It's going to take a while, but I can learn. XD

Hebrews chapter four shows us the importance of trust, and explains Salvation in the clearest context I have ever understood it.

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hebrews%204&version=CJB

Chapter six speaks on father Abraham, and points out how his struggle can be an example for us to follow.

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hebrews%206&version=CJB

But Hebrews eleven is where it really get's good. Here we can see a list of everyone who trusted in Yahova and received their promise at the end.

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hebrews%2011&version=CJB

Matthew 6:25-31 Gives us good advice. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+6&version=CJB

Particularly verse 31.

“So don’t be anxious, asking, ‘What will we eat?,’ ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘How will we be clothed?’ 32 For it is the pagans who set their hearts on all these things. Your heavenly Father knows you need them all. 33 But seek first his Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Don’t worry about tomorrow — tomorrow will worry about itself! Today has enough tsuris already!

Colossians 2 gives us sound advice on how to deal with pagan people calling us out for doing the things of Yahova.

16. So don’t let anyone pass judgment on you in connection with eating and drinking, or in regard to a Jewish festival or Rosh-Hodesh or Shabbat. 17 These are a shadow of things that are coming, but the body is of the Messiah.

Only Yahova has the right to judge me. My fellow man is only capable of warning me if they see me doing something wrong. But should I be afraid to keep the commandments of Yahova out of fear of other humans? I should not.

I find peace in trusting in Yahova. As we have been told in the Torah, Yahova will bless those who keep the words of his book, and will curse those who do not. Every day I strive against my flesh's desires to keep the covenant, and I strive to be a light to others. I believe that inner peace is given to use from Yahova when we keep his statues, and put Him first in our lives. We just need to obey and trust Him.

As simple as it sounds, it's a lot harder to learn than you might think! I mostly need to train myself to trust him more though. Though keeping the Torah is something I've ingrained fairly well at this point, not to brag. I certainly hope it doesn't come across as bragging! XD

Debate!

First, "peace" should not be understood as "not feeling worried/down". Instead, "peace" should be understood as "collected" or "ordered". Peace isn't about feelings. Feelings are only emotional reactions, and sometimes feeling worried or down is the proper response. Those feelings shouldn't be steered away just because they are uncomfortable.

But the bigger objection that I have is that your inner peace comes from something external. In what way is that inner peace? It can't be!

So your stance on inner peace is that an external thing removes bad feelings? This cannot be the best answer.

New View!

I put forth that inner peace is when I myself (inner) am well-ordered. It must be from me if it is "inner" peace. But what is well-ordered? By well-ordered, I mean that my body is healthy. I am not sick, I am well fed, I am well rested, etc. I also mean that my mind is healthy. I think good thoughts, I have good habits, I have a calm demeanor, I communicate well, I have a basic foundation of truth.

However, I want to expand all of these as well. This is only the basics of inner peace. My body should not simply be healthy, but in good shape. I should be athletic, agile, observant. I should not need external supplements for anything, including glasses for eye sight. And for my mind, I should learn to learn quickly, I should be able to discern the motives of people, I should be able to think as an administrator, I should control my emotions and be kind to my enemies and use my mind to ensure the excellence of the rest of myself. This is an extremely elevated view of inner peace, but it is the one that I hold.

I do agree with you on feelings, not being something we should disregard just because we do not want them. But sometimes they do not help with a situation either. With my feelings, I generally let them run their course, unless my mind deems that I'm getting to worked up over nothing, or I need to step in and make an intellectual correction. Being worried about things you can't change or would just make worse by trying doesn't help at all. It's at that point in time, I pray, both for the situation, and ask Yahova for peace.

If your inner peace comes from your body being healthy, by strict definition, then doesn't that mean you are allowing your inner peace to be dependent upon outside supplies, which make such, inner peace possible?

And if Yahova fills us with His spirit, then this inner peace which comes from trusting in him, does it not come from something inside of us?

I do agree with controlling habits and keeping wise about the world around us. It's a good practice, which makes life much easier. I put it on myself to do everything I can in life, and then pray and trust in Yahova to do the rest, that's how I live at least.

Coming from my body is inner because my body is me. If you punched me, you have hurt me because my body is me. Now, my body need food and other things to keep it in shape, but my peace does not come from those external things. If my body needed nothing external, I would still claim that my body is an adequate source of "inner" peace, just as if it does need those things. This just goes to show that it's not money, friends, power, or those things that we often find peace in, but that we should be self-sufficient.

One of the things I kinda pride myself on is my ability to make friends real easy. I'll never live a lonely life because I can even make friends with the McDonald's cashiers. This is a good thing. I have the ability to easily supply my need for social interaction. These abilities are internal, and that's kinda what I mean by inner peace as it relates to the body. My body needs food, yes, and food is external, yes, but the corresponding bodily inner peace thingy is whether or not my bodily abilities allow me to regularly acquire food. I am think that I'm adequately able (though not nearly as easy as my ability to make a friend) to work in multiple capacities and end up feeding myself. If I couldn't do this, I wouldn't be able to be at peace because I would have a real rational worry about how I might eat tomorrow.

The same goes for the soul. I also agree that I need God, and that God is external. But, it is not this external thing that brings me the peace, it is the fact that my soul has the ability to be filled with and call upon God. It's not that it's the external thing that brings me peace, but the fact that my soul has the ability to readily provide for it's needs. From a Christian perspective, this would mean that I have more than an infantile faith, but a mature faith, that I strive for virtue, and that I know my purpose and place in life.
