So here's how it went down... A while back, I joined the Nintendo Creator's Program, where you submit certain Youtube videos of certain Nintendo games and they give you back a portion of the ad revenue they're taking from it. Most companies let you have all of the ad revenue for your videos, but whatever. For being a part of this program, Nintendo offered me a pass to E3 this year, so I did that.

Now, last month, I was contacted from a Nintendo representative again, asking whether I wanted to start receiving free review copies of games. So I was like "heck yeah" and now I get games. So far: Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon, Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival, FAST Racing Neo, Year Walk, Typoman, and eshop credit to spend in Nintendo Badge Arcade.

I dunno what the point of this thread is... but I guess I just wanted to share my big personal gaming news with you guys. This is something I always dreamed of and now it's happening.

Linkums :

Congratulations, that sounds pretty awesome! I personally haven't heard much positive about the Nintendo Creator's Program, so this is a rare sight to see someone praising it! I was unaware this program existed, as I thought they were there only to take their cut of the ad revenue. I wonder why other people don't praise this, too!

You're a lucky guy! Congratulations!

Skilledtree : Well, I was certainly down on it too, and overall I think it's insulting that they're pretending to be nice in giving back ad revenue that should rightfully all be mine in the first place, but... yeah, this is making up for that now. :3 I don't know how they chose who to invite to get free games though, so for others the Creators Program is probably still just dumb.

Linkums : That sounds quite interesting with everything that Nintendo offers you such as the E3 pass (which normally cost around $1,000 per person) and a lot of free games to play and review so Nintendo to gain more profits and give you portion of the profits to you by tickets and games.

I heard about the Nintendo Creators Program, if I compare to a lot of YouTube reviewers, I would really suck at it, but nice to see someone on here who happens to be really successful with the program, Congrats Link, keep up with the fantastic work.

So they gave a small YouTuber with less than 1,000 subscribers review copies and a free E3 pass? That's actually pretty generous, considering how small that is to a company like Nintendo. I just hope that disclosing it to the public like this isn't considered a bad thing, otherwise you might be in some hot water. Congrats!

NovemberJoy : That's not being generous at all really. Companies will always prefer to sign small people in the hopes that if they get big, they will still be with them, instead of having to fight with other big companies and spending more than they need to to sign someone who is already big.

Why sign one big YouTuber when you can sign 50 small ones and control the ones you want when they get big?

zanderlex : Oh, I never thought about it from that perspective. That actually makes a lot of sense. So they're actually doing this to try to establish control over these YouTubers, and then control what they can post without losing their privileges? It's like some kind of conspiracy theory, but it's apparently the reality of the situation.

If that's the case, then Linkums should try to avoid falling into the trap of allowing Nintendo to control him. Being a glorified Nintendo PR employee would suck. A lot. Although it would probably still be better than being glorified PR for most other game companies.

NovemberJoy : It happens everywhere, not just video games, heck all sports run this way as well and it's better for the youtuber than trying to do everything on their own until they get big, and then they will still be controlled by someone.

I am under the 2nd largest YouTube network and still have a year left on my contract. They signed me when I had 20 subs.

NovemberJoy : Well, apart from the nondisclosure agreements that come with each game, there wasn't anything in my contract about not being allowed to say certain things. Although, if I never posted anything about the games they give me, I imagine they might stop sending me stuff.

I actually agree that it's surprising that they'd pick me when I don't have that many subs. My best guess is that it was by whose Creators Program videos were earning money and it just so happened that I had a random Wii Sports U video with over 300k views for some reason. So that lucky success might've skewed the stats in my favor. My second guess is that it's because I actually accepted their invite to E3 and showed up (I still had to pay for my flight and lodging, so it wasn't as easy of a thing as you might think).

Would that mean the review copies are technically prototypes or such, in late development stages?
Let's just hope none of them end up on The Cutting Room Floor, eh? (no, of course we need them on there)

Luigi442wii : Good question. So far everything I've received is identical to the final release version (except on occasion some of the online functionality isn't available until release). I don't think they'll be giving me any prototype versions to try, but you never know.

That's pretty sweet, congrats. With any luck those review copies will get you more views and more studios will send you games.
