Yuna1000: Damn, are you a psychology major? Your answer was absolutely brilliant! It also reflects my way of thinking; "testing the water" is a good term. When I started my (brief) career as a journalist I would dress pretty crapily. But when I realized that image did matter for "public" figures, I started wearing more suits and ties. I remember one day when the community organizations were having their annual general assembly, people could almost not recognize me when I wore my suit - and it was for the best.

Going back to the general subject: I believe one does have multiple masks when one acts contrary to their core beliefs just to get something out of it. Such a ting would happen for me, for example, if I feign being interested in a political candidate whose political ideas were completely opposed to mine so I could gain something out of it. For lack of a better word, I would lose my soul to it.

Unless your life is in danger, be a (wo)man and stand for what you believe for!

Sometimes my aunt can be nice, other times she's mean and uses profanity. Personally I think she has personality issues.

I myself tend to go through several personality masks a day. From your parents, to your friends, to even your cat you just go through several different behaviours to make sure you fit in in some way and keep you out of trouble.
When things get REALLY confusing is when you try and pick a 'mask' that is 'you'. It becomes hard to define who you yourself are when you get so many. Honestly, people who don't have these 'masks' are probably still growing up.

Gamin'Gal : I would not consider a different way of acting before different people as having "masks." I mean, hopefully you do not talk to your parents the way you talk to your friends! This has more to do with common sense. These different kinds of actions are just the many facets of your own personality.

What a "real" mask would be is acting contrary to your core values. For example, acting very nice and chummy towards your "mortal" enemy. I am not implying you should hurt that person, but genuine actions would probably make you avoid him or her.

Everyone does it.  You monitor yourself and make the adjustments depending on the social environment.

Imagine how you are when you're with your friends.  Now imagine how you act when you go to school and you're in a class with a mean teacher.  Okay, let's go with what you say and how you act when your grandparents are visiting your house of Thanksgiving or whatever you happen to celebrate?  Lastly, what are you like when you're at a funeral home.

Of course people are different in a variety of situations.  They're all similar to what we're really like but I'm curious, which situation is where you are the most honest to show the real you?

Pretty much what Yuna said. I act slightly differently to my teachers than I would to friends/peers and my family. I act the same way to my family as I do to my friends. I don't tend to act differently to people I don't know as well. How I act online is close to how I would act outside of school.

We all wear a mask for different occasions. When we go to work,we wear our proper etiquette and serious mask. When we are out in public,we wear our polite in public mask. When we are at our relatives' homes, we wear our I am playing nice, but I really do not care or want to be here mask. And yes,we even wear a mask on here.

I try to wear as little personality masks as possible. I try to be the real me. Which...It's kind of hard to tell who I am sometimes, if that makes sense. My masks tend to be pretty different sometimes. But other days I feel as if I'm only wearing one. But who you are around, or who you're talking to, sometimes you need them. People around me usually think of them as something bad. But I'm not always sure it is. Sometimes it's more appropriate to be serious. Sometimes you just unwind more around your friends. It's common sense to change behavior for the situations at hand.

I wonder what the character limit on this thing is.
