One of the most important aspects of Chao raising is the first evolution, the process in which Chao become adults. In this process, the Chao’s alignment is determined for the remainder of its life, and it also becomes a specific type depending on how it was raised.

In this guide, I will show you all available first evolutions. It’s important to know how a Chao looks like, not only because of aesthetics, but also if you’re searching to obtain a Chao focused on one skill. I will include four pictures of each evolution the Chao can undergo: two for their child form, so you know what type and alignment the Chao is leaning towards to, and two in their adult form so you can confirm the type of Chao you obtained.

For the details on how to obtain each type of Chao and determine its alignment, check out my Chao World Master Guide.

NOTE #1: The child forms probably aren’t accurate, as it’s hard to know when a Chao has been fully influenced towards a specific type. At least, if your Chao looks similar to the ones pictured here, you should do fine.

NOTE #2: A Chao can only evolve into one type. However, if you influence more than one type, the child can take a “hybrid” appearance that doesn’t correspond to anything seen here. In those cases, check the priorities each type has over the rest in my Master Guide.

NOTE #3: Chaos Chao will only have pictures of their adult form. This is because their child appearance is just that of a Normal Chao with random animal parts attached, so there’s no way you can exactly replicate their appearance.

NOTE #4: There are lots of different Chao breeds. The one used here is Two Tone Normal. The eggs you obtain at the start and the ones found on unlockable gardens contain a Chao of this breed. Since it’s the very first breed you will come across, it’s just normal to depict its evolutions so you can get the hold of how they work.

NOTE #5: Last, but not least, since this game is for the GameCube and that system never had a built-in screenshot taker, I had to use my mobile phone. Some pictures have decent quality, but some don’t. My apologies, but there’s no other way I could do this.

HERO CHAO

I will start with the Hero Chao because they are the simplest. They don’t manifest as many color changes as the other two alignments.

Hero Child Normal

The basic Hero Chao. It has a white body with a round yellow highlight on its stomach and light blue marks on its hands, feet and back. It also has dark orange and yellow wings, as well as two buds on its head with light blue marks. It has a dark blue emotion ball.

Hero Normal

Normal Chao don’t undergo any big changes upon evolving. The trademark inverted eyes and the emotion ball turned into a halo that has also switched to a lighter shade of blue. Its wings have lost the orange coloration in favor of a white tone.

Hero Child Swim

This Chao sports green and yellow markings on its hands, feet and back. It also has a green highlight on its stomach, orange wings and a vivid green emotion ball. Two protrusions, similar to flattened rabbit ears with yellow markings, appear from the top of its head, vaguely resembling hair.

Hero Swim

The most noticeable trait of this Chao are its flat feet and hands, designed for swimming. It has lime green markings on its hands, its back is fully green and its torso is partially green. Its wings have turned blue and its emotion ball, now a halo, is a vivid yellow. Its protrusions also sport green markings and have grown a bit, alongside its tail.

Hero Child Fly

This Chao has purple markings on its feet and hands. Its back is completely purple, and has a light blue highlight on its stomach. It sports the trademark orange wings, and its emotion ball is a vivid purple. It also sports two curved protrusions with purple markings on the top of its head.

Hero Fly

Its arms are fully purple, and the marking on its feet has moved towards its heels rather than the toes. Its body is fully white, save for a small pink highlight under its stomach. Its protrusions, curved back, have also grown longer. Its wings, its main trait, have turned blue and have developed considerably. It keeps its purple halo, but seemingly in a slightly lighter tone.

Hero Child Run

It sports light green markings on its hands and feet. Its back is totally light green, while it has a blue highlight on its stomach. It also has the trademark orange wings, and a small spike protrudes from the top of its head. Its emotion ball is pink.

Hero Run

This Chao undergoes a big change from child to adult. The markings on its hands, feet and spike are now dark blue with horizontal yellow stripes. It has dark blue markings on its back, near its tail, while the markings on its stomach are dark blue and purple. The spike on its head seems to have become smaller, and its wings haven’t changed at all. Its halo is now of a vivid yellow.

Hero Child Power

This Chao has red markings with horizontal white stripes on its hands, feet and back, reminiscing a bee. It has the trademark yellow wings, a yellow highlight on its stomach and three buds on its head with red and white markings. Its emotion ball is a vivid yellow.

Hero Power

This Chao is bigger and bulkier than the rest of evolutions, clearly showcasing its type. It has red markings on its hands, feet, chest and back. Its tail has turned red, and its wings have become a lot smaller. The buds on its head have grown noticeably bigger, and its halo is now a bright purple.

Angel Chao (Hero Chaos Chao)

This Chao has light pink crystallized parts of his body, mainly in its hands and “ears”. Its feet seem to also have small crystals embedded. Its “ears” fall down the sides of its head and then protrude backwards. It also has a highlight on its stomach of a different shade of pink. It has light blue eyes, which seem to also be crystals since they have no eyelids, and also doesn’t sport any kind of expression. Its head grow larger, forming what resembles to be a carapace. It has a luminescent yellow halo that is also partially transparent, and surprisingly enough has lost its wings completely.

NEUTRAL CHAO

The Chao you start with are born with this alignment. Theoretically, it’s the hardest to obtain, and the results obtained can vary greatly if it’s not balanced between Hero and Dark.

Neutral Child Normal

Very little differences compared to a newborn Chao. Its highlights on its hands, feet and back acquire a greenish tone, it becomes a darker shade of blue and a lighter blue patch appears on its stomach. The wings remain the same, as well as its yellow emotion ball.

Neutral Normal

Again, very little differences from its child form. Its highlights turn completely green, its tail grows wider and most noticeably its emotion ball turns cream colored.

Neutral Child Swim

This Chao has a yellow body, with darker markings on its hands, feet and back. It also has turquoise marks on the sides of its head, and a turquoise highlight on its stomach. Talking about its head, it grows a pair of “ears” just above said markings. It has light blue wings and a deep blue emotion ball.

Neutral Swim

This Chao has a green and brownish-white body, with yellow marks on its hands, feet and “ears”, which have grown down. It also has two blue markings on its forehead, as well as a blue tail and wings, and a greenish blue emotion ball. Most noticeably, its arms turn into oars of sorts, and its feet become more flat.

Neutral Child Fly

A sign that my gallery isn’t perfect, as this Chao’s natural color is a lighter shade of purple, more leaning towards dark pink, but it had too much Dark influence. It has markings on its hand, feet and back that are of an orange tone, with a yellow emotion ball and matching wings. Its head grows two spikes on its back resembling a jester hat which have a deep purple highlight, like the one in its stomach.

Neutral Fly

The very first thing to notice are the large and vivid greenish blue wings this pink Chao has on its back. Its jester-like spikes grow longer, and have purple striped highlights that also replicate on its hands and elongated tail. It has orange markings on its feet, as well as an orange highlight on its stomach, and another highlight on its back, colored purple. Initially, its emotion ball is pink like its body, but steadily turns into a tangerine-like color. Overall, this Chao vaguely resembles NiGHTS, one of Sega’s characters from NiGHTS into Dreams, and can resemble it even more if you influence its Fly skill further.

Neutral Child Run

This Chao has a turquoise body, with darker markings on its feet, hands, head and back. Its head grows two “mini-ears” on its sides, and also protrudes three spikes, one upwards towards its emotion ball and two on the back. It has orange wings and a turquoise emotion ball to match its body color.

Neutral Run

This Chao has a lime green body, with dark green stripes on the spikes on its head, which have grown longer. Its feet are considerably bigger, and have brown markings. It has very small wings and tail, and its emotion ball is the same lime green as its body. If influenced further towards its Run skill, this Chao becomes very similar to Sonic.

Neutral Child Power

This Chao has a reddish pink body, with orange marks on its hands, feet and back. It has a dark grey highlight on its stomach, and a brownish orange emotion ball. Two “ears” seem to protrude from its head, and turquoise wings.

Neutral Power

This Chao has a flame orange body, with a red highlight on its stomach and yellow markings on its head, hands and feet. Talking about its hands, they grow noticeably bigger, and the Chao overall becomes a bit bulkier than the rest of evolutions. It grows a wide tail, coloured green and red, and also has a green highlight on its back. The “ears” grow sharper, resembling spikes, and grows a third one on the back of its head. It has a sandy brown emotion ball.

Light Chao (Neutral Chaos Chao)

This Chao seems to have its arms, back of the head and side bangs made up of sky blue crystals that are semitransparent. It has a clear white body, with very light blue markings on its feet and a highlight of the same color on its stomach. Its emotion ball turns luminous, like if it was plasma, and its eyes are now two bright green colored gems. Again, this Chao has no facial expression, and completely loses its wings.

DARK CHAO

Dark Chao are the antithesis of Hero Chao, but still adorable tiny creatures. Technically, they should be of dark colors, but in reality, they show a wide variety of dark and bright colors.

Dark Child Normal

The standard Dark Chao. It has a dark brown body, with pink markings on its hands, feet and back. It also has red wings and a pink emotion ball. Noticeably, the highlight on the stomach present on previous alignments is now a half-moon marking in the chest, in this case colored blood red.

Dark Normal

Not many changes from its child form. It has a dark garnet body, with reddish pink markings on its hand, feet and back. Its spiked emotion ball is purple, as well as its wings, and it keeps the half-moon mark on its chest, also colored reddish pink. Noticeably, from the back of its head protrudes a jagged tip.

Dark Child Swim

This Chao sports an olive green body, with pale green markings on its hands, feet and back. From the upper back of its head protrudes a pale green spike, with an olive green one protruding from the lower back. It has a sky blue emotion ball, orange wings and a dark red half-moon marking on its chest.

Dark Swim

With its black and aqua dual colored body, this Chao resembles a ninja. Its arms and feet are long and flat, remarking what this Chao is designed for. The spikes on the back of its head grow larger, with the upper one sticking upwards. Its wings match the coloration of its body, and its spiked emotion ball is turquoise.

Dark Child Fly

This Chao has a dark purple body, with lighter purple markings on its hands, feet and back. Two spikes protrude from the back sides of its head, resembling a jester hat. It has greyish blue wings, a pinkish purple emotion ball and a blood red half-moon marking on its chest.

Dark Fly

Keeps the dark purple body and lighter purple markings on its hands, feet and more developed jester-like spikes. It also sports darker purple markings on its face and stomach. Its spiked emotion ball has turned turquoise, and its more developed wings are also of that color.

Dark Child Run

This Chao is very similar to the Dark Child Swim Chao. It sports a dark green body, with lighter green and blue markings on its hands, feet and back. Its wings and emotion ball are dark blue, and the half-moon marking on its chest is black. Three spikes protrude from the back of its head, one at each side and one on the top.

Dark Run

This Chao sports a dark green body, with light green markings on its hands, feet and head. It grows four spikes on its head, two on the upper part and one on each side. It also has a light green half-moon marking on its chest, dark blue wings and a matching spiked emotion ball. If influenced further towards its Run skill, this Chao becomes very similar to Shadow.

Dark Child Power

This Chao has a dark brown body, with orange markings on its hands, feet and back. It also has flame yellow wings and a bright yellow emotion ball. It grows a spike on the upper part of its head that zigzags a little, just below its emotion ball. It also sports the trademark blood red half-moon marking on its chest.

Dark Power

This Chao has a brownish orange body, with horizontally striped orange markings on its arms, tail and top of the head. Speaking of which, its head becomes cone-shaped. Its soles also have orange markings, as well as its stomach. It has small wings of the same color of its body, as well as a yellow spiked emotion ball.

Devil Chao (Dark Chaos Chao)

As with its peers, this Chao has orange crystals on its arms and the back bangs of its head, taking a flame-like appearance. It has a pitch black body, with deep purple feet, and grows two horns with red tips on the sides of its head, plus the aforementioned crystallized bangs. It has the trademark half-moon marking on its chest, which is flame orange and gives the impression of being burning. It grows a devilish tail, and completely loses its wings. Its emotion ball turns into a flame, resembling ignis fatuus, and its eyes become two bright yellow gems.

gamerforlifeforever2 : I was also amazed when I discovered there were so many evolutions available. Back when I purchased the game I was too young to realize that, and my knowledge was limited to probably 20-25% of this guide, and an even lower percentage for my Master Guide.

My favorite? Well, these are just first evolutions. Chao still undergo a second evolution during adulthood, so these forms aren't permanent (except for Chaos Chao). If I have to pick from the ones shown here, I absolutely love how the Devil Chao looks, while Neutral Fly and Dark Power also have beautiful color schemes.

I admit I do not know what this game is about. At all. However with your guide I would at least know where to start to grow my characters. And despite using your mobile phone, the pictures are very clear.

I remember growing up and all I ever wanted was every Chao ever lmao. My Chao garden was the primary reason for even playing Sonic Adventure Battle 2.

I really like the way the Dark Chaos Chao looks at the very bottom, I've never gotten one of those. I never had the power chao either, I really focused on swimming and stuff. I honestly completely forgot about this game until seeing this - I might go play it because I bought the "remastered" version for PlayStation 3 a few years back!

Good read

Skilledtree : I know that feeling, man. I have less than 1/4 of the obtainable emblems in Story Mode because all I did was focusing on Chao (and because I got stuck more often than not, but that's not our business now :LOL

I also had the Playstation 3 version under vigilance, just in case my Wii broke down (glad it didn't happen yet). I'm aware there are a few differences or glitches on that version compared to this one for the GameCube, nothing related to Evolution though.

If you're going to give a try to this game or any version of it, be sure to follow the link to my other guide, that one has everything you need to know about Chao.

janus : Believe me when I say those words mean a lot to me. The feedback of a user that knows nothing about the game is always more valuable than the feedback of the experts.

And well, I still dislike how some of the pictures were taken, specially the one where a part of my TV appears. Maybe next time I could try with my GoPro, although I would have to edit those pictures a ton more than these ones as my whole bedroom would appear
