Davideo7 :    The game has got to be a GBA system game; it is the best system. Only the best game from that system will do. Pokémon Emerald is the one. That game has the best everything. Unfortunately, it does not give an expansive variety of Pokémon to catch. So I looked at quality hacks of the best games which make a claim that you can obtain 386 or a whole lot of them.

Notes: All games claim to have exactly 386 obtainable Pokedex entries unless otherwise noted. If the developer has said anything else, perhaps they can be asked what they meant by "All Pokémon".

Here are my lists of GBA Pokémon hacks ranked by how few plays they have.

Emeralds

Pokémon Emerald - Complete National Dex Edition  Plays: 1,242     https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegame/game.php?id=87236

Pokémon Saga - DarkViolet(beta 1)                        Plays: 11,859    https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=37319

Pokémon Emerald - Hard Edition (beta 1.03)        Plays: 13,638        https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=65430

Pokémon Emerald - Catch 'em All!                           Plays:  17,589  https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=69594

Pokémon Expert Emerald (Ver. 1.42)                       Plays: 26,086    https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=69500

Pokémon Priti Emerald                                               Plays: 34,187    https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=63662 Claims "almost all"

Pokémon Flora Sky - Complement Dex Plays: 38,667    https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=65479

Pokémon Expert Emerald (Old beta 8.0)                Plays: 41,458     https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=64304

I am definitely leaning hard towards the one at the top of my list. Pokémon Emerald - Complete National Dex Edition purports to have 386 Pokémon obtainable and has just over 1240 plays, 3 of which are mine. There cannot be more than 50 members on the whole site who have played extensively - since I foresaw that it was a concern. Virtually zero advantage to people who have played more(just a little bit more). Maybe you could get the newest Expert Emerald which would have no plays on Vizzed yet. There is an idea for you.

Fire Reds

Pokémon - Chronicles of Soala                        Plays: 2,487   https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=75003 Claim 673

Touhoumon Insane Version                               Plays: 2,743   https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=64769

Pokémon Amnesia (save file fix)                       Plays: 4,850   https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=44014

Pokémon Furious Flames (Beta 2.20)            Plays: 7,598    https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=63963

Pokémon Azure Horizons (beta 2)                   Plays: 8,013  https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=37318  "a good portion of the 386"

Pokémon Septo Conquest                       Plays: 9,345    https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=36513

Pokémon Alt Evo Fire Red                        Plays: 11,619  https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=64981  Claim 272

Pokémon DarkViolet (beta 2)                   Plays: 15,904   https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=73967     Claim 210

Pokémon Adventure - Red Chapter        Plays: 18,816  https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=74796   Claim "All"

Pokémon Amnesia                                    Plays: 19,156  https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=11556

Pokémon
Rocket Strike                            Plays: 21,726   https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=73725  Claim "over 380"

Pokémon
Fire Red - Generations (v1.5)    Plays: 32,047    https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=64785

Pokémon
Ultra Violet                                     Plays: 68,804    https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=64815

Pokémon
Fuligin                                           Plays: 104,136  https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=37307
All Pokémon from the first 3 gens

The top one, Pokémon - Chronicles of Soala (beta 9.0) may have double the plays of Pokémon Emerald - Complete National Dex Edition but it claims 673 unique Pokedex entries are possible. Double the entries for double the activity sounds fair. On a percentage basis, the people who have played might be about as far along in it as the Emerald hack.

Touhoumon Insane Version has the highest play percentage among females that I have ever seen; it's something for everyone it seems.

Both Pokémon Amnesia games have the same developer and description; I wonder why a "(save file fix)" was necessary(Uh oh!).

 Leaf Green

Pokémon Advanced Adventure Plays: 45,232 https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=65620  All, excluding some Legends

So Leaf Green was not the most popular to make a full generation spanning Pokedex game of but this game probably has more potential Pokedex entries than each and every Ruby and Sapphire hack that I looked at.

---

In summary, the top Pokémon Emerald hack on my list or one of the top 2 Pokémon Fire Red Hacks would most likely reap the best dividends purely on a game quality / inactivity / quantity of Pokedex entries basis.

I will gladly test every one of these listed ones to make sure they have a good Trainer Card for the screenshot competition. Some other Pokémon hack games I have played have failed to produce Pokedex entries on the Trainer Card so I have learned to be wary with games I have not played. I'll get back to you with the results before today ends.

Postman3 : They already did pokemon emerald 368.. though. But I do agree that the better hacks are on the GBA system.

imamonster :   Yes. That is the more obvious reason that Davideo7 seems dead set against another Pokémon Emerald hack being used. Think of how ideal Pokémon Emerald - Complete National Dex Edition would be for this competition though. It is largely untested. Davideo7 does have an interest in making sure such "Catch em All" games stand by the claims that have been made. This February competition is the best way to do that. The low activity rate means not many will have a significant advantage upon entering the screenshot competition. The difficulty of obtaining 386 Pokedex entries in just 28 days to clinch victory sets a tone of challenge to the entrants.

I have actually divested much thought to come to my conclusions. So far on this thread Davideo7 has shot down any game being the same generation as the ones already used which pretty much eliminates every single Pokémon game we have in the RGR. If we wanted a second generation game, LocksmithArmy still has few good ones that have not been used or Pokémon Crystal All (hack) purports to have them all so it might be good to use. First generation games do not seem to register Pokedex entries on the Trainer Card so that is out.

If the boss man still stubbornly refuses to make it a Pokémon Emerald game, maybe he'll take my Fire Red suggestions into account. They all seem to be complete but I have been wrong before.

Thank you for voicing your opinion monster. I do hope we get a GBA game.

Davideo7 : As promised, here is proof that every game I suggested - with the exception of Pokémon - Chronicles of Soala (because I played for an hour and did not obtain a Pokedex, let alone a National one)  comes with a Trainer Card that notes Pokedex progress, Money and Time.

For Pokemon Emerald Complete National Dex Edition

For Pokemon Saga DarkViolet (beta 1)

For Pokemon Emerald Hard Edition

For Pokemon Emerald Catch em All

For Pokemon Expert Emerald (Ver. 1.42)

For Pokemon Priti Emerald

For Pokemon Flora Sky Complement Dex Version

For Pokemon Expert Emerald (Old beta 8.0)

For Touhoumon Insane version

For Pokemon Furious Flames (beta 2.20)

For Azure Horizons (beta 2)

For Pokemon Alt Evo Fire Red

For Pokemon Amnesia

For Pokemon Ultra Violet

For Pokemon Dark Violet (beta 2)

For Pokemon Adventure - Red Chapter

For Pokemon Rocket Strike

For Pokemon Fire Red - Generations (v1.5)

For Pokemon Fuligin

For Pokemon Advanced Adventure

For Pokemon Septo Conquest

For Pokemon Amnesia (save file fix)

I heartily take back what I mentioned about Pokémon - Chronicles of Soala and Touhoumon Insane version being top of the line Pokemon games. Chronicles is more like a confusing puzzle game with battles where you don't capture anything so much as join up with new Pokemon with Spheal in their nickname. Touhoumon, well let's be honest, who can actually tell most of these puppetmon apart. It would be problematic to build any variety in the Touhoudex without extensive anime knowledge about the chibi characters. The rest of the Fire Red games were okay though I am not sure about some of the lower ones on the list. They might give us a National Pokedex soon or never. Most did have the National Pokedex though it should be noted. That was a good thing for the developers to pay attention to.

The games I'm currently considering include:
Pokemon Light Platinum
Pokémon Ultra Violet
Pokemon Shiny Gold
Pokemon Expert Emerald
Pokémon Emerald - Complete National Dex Edition

I would be interested in Pokemon - Chronicles of Soala but the final version will be released soon and I'd rather do a competition for it after it has been finished. As I said, I'd rather do games that are complete.

I'm currently leaning toward Pokemon Expert Emerald due to the fact that you can catch all the Pokemon, it is a difficult game and doesn't haven nearly as many plays compared to some other Pokemon hacks in the RGR.

I will make my decision soon.

mvhupsel : Go ahead and PM it to tRIUNE.

Postman3 : I honestly don't know who has been impersonating me but I know I never said we can't do rom hacks for games that we already did rom hcks for. I agree that a Pokemon Emerald hack does seem like the way to go.

Davideo7 :   Well it's not that you said that we can't but in your earlier replies on this thread your comments seemed to reflect an opinion that we should not have another Pokémon Emerald game for February. It was just the way you discouraged those suggestions in the early going with "Pokémon Emerald again?!" type replies. I, for one, am glad you have come around.

Maybe we can have a huge debate throughout January 2016 on the next February Trainer Card game if you make the new thread early enough. I would have researched more if there was more time. There are so many options to consider. I just chipped the tip off the RGR iceberg.

Thank you for making Pokémon games so plentiful in the RGR. I would not be here today if there were not so many things to choose from.

Davideo7 : I'm not sure whether that's accurate or not, but a comment on the game page states that the version of the game is outdated (1.36 rather than 1.4.2). You might want to make sure of that before it starts, since there's a chance an outdated version could present issues that could mess this contest for good.

I searched it and got the latest version, tested it and it's working perfectly thus far. Again, let me know if you want me to link it or not, either here or via PM to you or tRIUNE.

mvhupsel : tRIUNE updated the game page, it was 1.36 but he later updated it. Users who didn't follow his instructions on how to update it would still see 1.36. Anyone who hasn't played it previously though is fine since they wouldn't have the old rom file on their computer.

So when we last discussed this in January, I was pretty quick to write off the significance of Generation II hacks but now that the competition is done I have had time to have second thoughts about that. Perhaps doing a Pokémon screenshot competition with a second generation game would be good. While the games I researched in January may still be good ones to consider, there are Generation II hacks that are not bad at all. Here are the Generation II hacks that made my shortlist in today's research. I listed them under the original they are a hack of and ranked them by the general amount of plays they have received. The goal is to find a game that allows us to catch them all or close to it. I looked for and noted games with claims of high Pokedex yields and also noted difficulty increases (which are good because they add a challenge).

Gold Hacks

Pokémon Gold Sunset Horizons (fixed)     https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=75136     Plays: 1,412    "Completable Pokedex"        "High but Reasonable Difficulty"

Pokémon Hoenn League (beta 1.1)  https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=77278     Plays: 1,526    "Pokedex are all filled up by Gen3'dex" [maybe 386 complete]

Pokémon Orb        https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=64886      Plays: 6,285       "All 251 Pokémon are catchable"

Pokémon Prism - Summer 2010 Beta (gold hack)    https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=19593     Plays: 118,480  "252 Pokémon to find"    "National Dex"

Crystal Hacks

Pokémon Crystal Kaizo              https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=77206      Plays: 2,625       "You can catch 251 Pokémon"

Pokémon Complex Crystal (v1.33)      https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=64311     Plays: 14,844     "251 Pokémon available"     "difficulty has been increased"

Pokémon Ultimate End             https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=36516      Plays: 14,829      "All Pokémon expect Mew, Mewtwo and Celebi are catch / tradeable"

Pokémon Crystal All (hack)        https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=5078            Plays: 140,681    "allows you to catch every single Pokémon"  "a lot harder too"

Silver Hacks

Pokémon Dark Energy (beta 4.0)     https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=65476     Plays: 11,318   This is a newer version of the one below but this one does not claim 250 obtainable Pokémon.

Pokémon Dark Future (beta 3.1)      https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=63987     Plays: 11,944       "250 Pokémon catchable"

I will embark on more research to discover whether all the Pokedexes will register every Pokémon and each game produces a Trainer Card for screenshot with a Pokedex number, a money summary and time counter. I will be sure to post screenshot proof of my findings later, possibly tomorrow.

These are the Trainer Cards from the games I tested to certify proper TC function.

Goldies

For Pokémon Gold Sunset Horizons (fixed)    It appears to keep Pokedex record of both 1st and 2nd generation entries.

For Pokémon Hoenn League (beta 1.1)          This one also records nationally and has 3rd Gen Pokémon.

For Pokémon Orb                                               This game's Pokedex records Generations 1 and 2.

For Pokémon Prism Summer 2010 Beta gold hack                    So far has registered a Pokedex hit for every Pokémon seen with entries from the first to the fourth generation.

Crystals

For Pokémon Crystal Kaizo                             Pokedex spans both generations.

For Pokémon Complex Crystal (v1.33)           Pokedex records both generations.

For Pokémon Ultimate End                         Both generations recorded in Pokedex.

For Pokémon Crystal All (hack)                 Pokedex records reliably.

Silvers

For Pokémon Dark Energy (beta 4.0)                Pokedex records perfectly so far. I just got it.

For Pokémon Dark Future (beta 3.1)                Pokedex functions well. Gives the Trainer Card an accurate Pokedex number.

All of these seem to display the stats properly on the Trainer Cards. Any of them could be used for a February Pokémon screenshot competition.

So that pretty much sums it up. If any other worthy games come to my attention, I will of course research them as well.
