When I was little, the game over screen of Zelda 2 gave me nightmares: silhoette of ganon + evil laugh = terrifying for a 5 year old.

The game over screen on the original Shadowgate was even scarier.

Not to mention Resident Evil for the Gamecube. Especially those zombie dogs that can jump through the window at any second.

edit: I forgot in Super Mario 2, the mask thing that chases you when you pick up a key.

2nd edit: Another one i forgot is near the end of level 1 in the original Zelda where the boss is roaring in the next room and the hands are coming out of the wall.

3rd edit: A couple more i forgot are the Redeads from Ocarina of Time and the Sea Hats from Wind Waker. I think i got them all this time...

4th edit: Apparently not. I forgot Haunter from the Pokemon red/blue. Creepy sprite and cry.

5th edit: Peahats the first time i played Ocarina of Time

The Warning! screen in SSB. No, seriously. That scared the crap out of me when no horror game could.

And maybe that one game where sometimes the game would do some freaky stuff such as putting up the Xbox or PS2 bootup screens on a Gamecube game or falsely delete your entire memory card... can't for the life of me remember the name, but I think it was Perfect Dark or something. (Please correct me.)

FEAR scared me quite a bit, which was dissapointing because it was such a nice looking FPS and I just didnt like playing it because of all the flashing images and whatnot.

Three words, Rescue on Fractalus.

Seriously, that game freaked me out when I first played it. Basically in the game you often stopped by to rescue civilians and you could only see a silhouette figure of the person and just when you're about to rescue the civilian

That happened. It might be cheesy now, but when I was a child that gave me nightmares.

Well the first game that ever scared me was that skiing game on those old computers. The game I'm talking about is on xfighter1138's picture with the robot/abominable snowman dude eating the skier. Every time THAT THING at some point in time in the game, BOLTS out of the trees and runs straight for me, that thing always gave me the f***ing scares every time I played it! And that thing ran FAST!!

I mean you can't even run away from it! It's like luck of the draw whether it is there or not. You run away from it by going diagonal for a while and CHOMP! It's already on the other side eating you out alive. Then it does it's stupid little hop-like dancing victory thing for eating your corpse.

I always hated games that make something just "pop out of nowhere and you are then immediately dead" because you don't know what killed you and it infuriates you to no end!

In other words I hate games that make things scare you, such as appearing without any warning, sudden outbreak of music in an eerie area and so on and so forth.

BZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM DEAD.

BZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM DEAD.

So because of this I get the creeps when I hear any sound like BZOOOOOOOOOOOOOM.

Resident Evil Zero. My brother used to play it when I was about 5 or 6. Because of this, I'm scared to death of zombies.

Also, MegaMan Legends 2. The reverbots used to creep me out. Not if my brother was playing, but only if I was.

Don't even get me started on MegaMan X5. The theme that plays once the Zero Virus is made scares the living s*** out of me. It gave me nightmares for a long time. If I hear that theme again, it will give me nightmares again.

EDIT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkY5u1LJZzw The theme of the Zero Virus. I hope that this is the song I'm talking about. Didn't listen, because it scares me.

One number, one letter, two words:

3D Monster Maze

Imagine a first-person adventure in a maze where there is a GIANT MONSTER in the maze too. The game gives you hints as to where he is, like:

Rex lies in wait
He has seen you
Footsteps approaching

And the scariest one: He is behind you

Did I mention the lack of sound too?

I have just two words:

SILENT HILL!

I first witnessed my mum playing when I was about 11 or 12, and at the time,I'd never been so scared in my life.

Although I enjoy the sequels, and the are pretty scary, no game has ever scared me as much as tha first one.

Hmm... Back before I played anything from the horror genre, I always watched others play some games. ...Okay, A LOT of horror games.

I don't remember anything from before PSX, so most of these people might know.

PSX -

Resident Evil - Heck, I think almost everything about this game creeped me out when I was a kid. (Though, RE II and RE3 didn't really scare me.)

Silent Hill - Static, darkness, then OHMYFNGGAWDMONSTER.
Some of the monsters really bugged me in this game. (SH2.... not so much.)

Parasite Eve - I don't remember why, but I watched my dad play a little bit of this game, and never watched him play it again, cause it scared me.

Parasite Eve II - This is when I started growing used to horror games. It had its moments, but not so much when I played it again.

Clock Tower - I'm now afraid of people with scissors and closets.

PS2 -

Resident Evil Code Verionica - Yeah, I remember this game. I remember getting scared by this game. I don't remember it that much. Good times... Gooood times.

Silent Hill 3 - So... I'm now afraid of Rabbits, Dark Hallways, Rooms with mirrors, and carousels. FUNFUNFUN.

Fatal Frame - It had a scary atmosphere and it had ghosts popping out of effing nowhere to scare the sh-t out of you. I thought it was scary.

Resident Evil: Outbreak - I will not play anything Past the first level.
Resident Evil: Outbreak File #2- I will not play anything Past the first level.

X360 -
Dead Rising - Only the nighttime Zombies, and when people on your team died.

I know there's a lot more (for PSX only), but those are all I remember.
I haven't found any good 360 horror games as of late.

Castlevania 64: In the Villa, you had to go through the hedge maze with a psycho chainsaw killer. I killed him and moved on, but when I turned a corner and there he was, I was so scared that I nearly peed myself.

Resident Evil (GameCube): Just the ambiance of that game creeps me out. Honestly, after the first Crimson Head, I could not play that game by myself again. Even with others and all the lights on, I still have a hard time turning that game on.

Dead Rising: Adam the Clown with his chainsaws is just the creepiest thing in Dead Rising.

Left 4 Dead: One word, "witch"

Final Fantasy VI: Kefka, who else?

Resident Evil 4: The Re-generators and the Iron Maidens both scare the crap out of me.

EarthBound: Giygas...

When I was younger, about 11 and under,Resident Evil games and the movie scared the crap out of me.
In Resident Evil:Code Veronica X,my fear comes back;SPIDERS.
I'm now afraid of what ants are thinking of daily after seeing Alexia in that disturbing final form. T_T

And currently,I'm scared of the beginning of the Temple stage in Psi-Ops:The Mindgate Conspiracy.
Those aura beasts scare me when I see them through aura vision and when I get close.
They look like blue jellyfish, but without all those stingers and mushroom shaped body.
They look like giant,hazel-colored leeches that will suck your blood out then bite your head off when visible without aura vision.

I still shudder everytime I see a bug.
