Today we are going to run though my top ten list for Sega's second ill-fated add on for the Sega Genesis but before we get to that, lets talk a little about the console itself. The Sega 32x was released in 1994 in North America. The 32x is a 32-bit video game console (wonder why they called it the 32x?). This console pops on top of your Sega Genesis console, it has a cord that connects it to the console as well, it has its own AC cord (just like the Sega CD) so if you have all the add ons you would have to have a large power strip to play them (I own a huge one just for that reason). The Sega 32x was a commercial failure and early in its life span you could find them in sales bins for around 20 bucks. People just didn't want to spend money on an add on when they knew Sega had another console on the way. The Sega 32x ended up with around a total of 40 games before it was discontinued. Now you may be asking me "how in the world can you do a top then on a console with that few games? That is a pretty big percent of the games!". I assure that every game on this list is great and some of them are good enough to be on a top ten for any console. Just because the 32x didn't sell well doesn't mean it was a bad console, people seem to over look the fact that it has some really great games and I am going to try to fix that. Ok, enough talk, its time for so blast processing!

Number 10- Cosmic Carnage. This is a Tournament Fighter released in 1994. This game has a cool story, its about some space criminals who pretty much have to fight it out, I suggest you read the back story for yourself, so I want give away anything in it. The characters the is the best part of the game. They are crazy looking and very interesting, you can even customise some of the characters. The opening music in Cosmic Carnage has the right feel, its very spacey and creepy but not all of the tracks are as good or fitting. The graphics are 32 bit goodness, and the backgrounds are very nice to look at. The main problem I do have with this game is the controls. They seem a little off but nothing too bad. If you are a huge Tournament Fighter fan, Cosmic Carnage is a must play!

Number 9- Virtua Racing Deluxe. Virtua Racing was on a number of home consoles but the best version was on the arcades (as in most cases). If you wanted a true arcade feel in your house, you had two options. Option one, buy the arcade. Option two, buy a 32x and the Virtua Racing Deluxe port. There are a few different cars and tracks in this game but really doesn't offer much more than any other racing game. The graphics are as arcade like as you could get for the time but not the best looking game in the world. The music is ok at best but the biggest problem is game has is its controls. It feels slippery and it is pretty hard not to crash or spin out. With all of its problems Virtua Racing Deluxe is still a great racing game. I recommend it to any racing fan.

Number 8- Virtua Fighter. Any Sega fan knows what Virtua Fighter is. It is one of Sega's great Tournament Fighters. Now, the first thing I hear people complain about in this game is the graphics. The graphics looks good in this game, I don't understand all the complaining. This looks as if it could be a very early Playstation game (almost). This is a 3D Tournament Fighter, this was early in 3D, what more could you have asked from them? They did their best when it comes to graphics. I really like the music, its funky and the voice acting is very clean and clear. This is a very fun fighting game for the 32x and one of the games that kinda defines the system for me.

Number 7-   Metal Head. This is a first person mech game and a very neat one at that. The first level looks awesome, the streets and houses look realistic. I have no problems with any of the graphics in this game other than the guy who tells you your mission before each level. His face looks so funny, it is terrible in the best way possible, which makes it great. The music is rocking. It is heavy and hard and just awesome. I love the sound tracks. This is definitely another game I think really defines the 32x. You may be asking why it is so low on the list if I like it so much. Well, the controls are stiff as a board but it is still super enjoyable.

Number 6- Kolibri. In this game you play as a hummingbird. Yeah that's right, a hummingbird. Wonder who made this game? It looks familiar. It looks like a game on the Genesis, one about a dolphin. Yep that's right, Kolibri was made by the people who made Ecco the Dolphin and it really shows. The graphics are just as beautiful as Ecco's and they game play is about the same (other than you fly in this game not swim like in Ecco). The story is good the music and graphics are good and game play is fun. I highly suggest this game to any Ecco the Dolphin fans out there.

Number 5- Tempo. This is just a crazy platformer. As you could guess by the name it has alot to do with music. The graphics are smooth and colorful, I love the graphics! This game looks like they went wild with a box of crayons in the best way. The music is also a high point of the game. I love platformers so I was really drawn to this game and I am very happy about that. For people who no nothing about the 32x and never seen this game, you are really missing about, this is a quirky and cute little platfomer and an over all great game.

Number 4- Space Harrier. This seems to be a remake of the Sega Master System version of the game. The graphics are arcade quality and the sound is great. There is not to much to say about this game. The graphics are mind blowing and the game play is fun. Go play it.

Number 3- Star Wars Arcade. Its a trap!!! Well this game is not a trap. Star Wars Arcade is a fixed, first person space shooter and a awesome one at that. The graphics are sound a some of the best for the system but the game play is what won me over. If you are going to play Star Wars on a home console from this time the only good choice you have is Super Star Wars for the Super Nintendo (Not so great) or this game for the Sega 32x (yeah there were more Star Wars games out there but those are the only ones I like). The game also has a two player mode which is awesome. Get a friend, buy this game and you are set up for a good time.

Number 2- Doom. Doom is on a number of consoles, what makes this one good? The graphics are ten fold better than the Super Nintendo version but not as good as the Atari Jaguar version. The music is a bit odd, most people hate it and like the Snes versions music better. I am kind of on the fence about it. The game play is what really matters though, and the game play in Doom does not disappoint. I am not even a big First Person Shooter fan and I love this game, It is a blast to play and has high replay value. I recommend this to any FPS fan.

And now our Number 1 Sega 32x game!!!!! Knuckles Chaotix. Knuckles Chaotix is the only Sonic game for the console and features Knuckles as the main character. This game is just so fun. It uses rubber band physics, what does that mean? You are attacked to another character via magic rings that acts as a rubber band, the controls are great, it is fun trying to maneuver around through the levels because of how the two characters are binded together. The graphics and music is top notch just like most Sonic games. Knuckles Chaotix has that Sonic feel to it but it is very fresh at the same time. This is not just one of my top 32x games it is one of my top Sonic games and really top games on any console. If you play any game from this list, I really hope its this one.

Please comment. Tell me what you like/didn't like. What games you think should have been on the list, what games you played because of this list and as always, thank you for reading.

kirbmanboggle : I think you are a little confused. Fatal Labyrinth was on the Genesis not the Sega 32x, the Genesis add on. That is a good game though. Not my favorite Sega Genesis title but a game that gets a play every now and then.

While I don't agree with the ordering of the list (really who does have same top tens?), I do agree that the 32X was a decent system that offered up some good games.  I would have put Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter closer to the top.  I never had a 32x when I was younger but I was probably one of the few that really wanted one.  I didn't get a chance to play the games till I learned of emulators.  When comparing versions of something like Virtua Racing it really shows off the capablilities of the 32x.  I grew up playing the Genesis version but now when I play using emulation I always play the 32X version.

fightorace : Top tens are all about what the person making it likes best so you are very right about no body making the same top ten list. I didn't know about this system in till years latter, when I found out about it I had to have it. Payed 50 bucks for it and found Virtua Fighter, Virtua Racing, Metal Head, and a Baseball game at a thrift store for a few bucks about 2 years ago or so.
