Hello, I study weather so I thought I would take about the rare southern snow storm.

First of all this event is very rare in the South. We usually do not get much snow  if any at all. When the South gets winter weather usually it is an ice storm. Because the atmosphereis usually warm and sometimes the surface can be below freezing causing rain to freeze.  Anything below the Ohio River typically does not see much snow. With that being said, the mountains can sometimes get more snow due to the elevation. So what makes these storms so rare and what allowed this one to form? The answer is the southern valleys in Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas are typically warm. Average high temps in this area  usually range from 48 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit or 9 to 16 degrees Celsius so precipitation that normally falls in the winter is usually rain. However, Winter of 2014 has been very cold. Some places temps are running 10 degrees below average or greater. We also have had cold arctic high pressures that have pulled cold air down to the Gulf Coast.. So the south has seen highs struggle to make it out of the 30's. The Jet stream has been active the past 12 days producing two storm systems. If temperatures were average they would have just put down rain. But with temps being way below average and the cold air we have snow. The storm systems are pulling a lot of gulf moisture from the Gulf of Mexico so we have a Wet Snow which is often heavier. That is why a lot of Southern States are seeing 3 to 6 inches or more of snow.

To some 3 to 6 inches or 7.6 to 15 centimeters may not  be much. However as I said here in the South we do not get this kind of weather. Most of the time we have to deal with flooding, tornadoes, and coastal areas have a hurricane threat in the summer and fall. To sum it up, a lot of places in the South are going to have triple or more times than there average amount.

We live in the same state (seen you put where you live in one of your posts). In my area the news said we are going to get around 7 inches. I haven't seen that much snow in a very long time. I have noticed a lot more snow this year than what has been in the past.

This is an interesting post man, thank you for taking the time to do this and good luck with the snow for the next few days man.

While the weather forecast does not predict snow for the next week (only precipitation and storms), there were flurries today. The roads may get icy, but I doubt that it will stick.

You know what's funny? I remember the post in question. And I'm from the same state, too.
