Why do you like Fire Emblem? What about it, appeals to you? Is it the characters, the depth of the story, the gameplay... what? Please share, and try to be as informational as possible!

There are so many things I love about Fire Emblem.

Firstly, I love the characters.  The characters are noble, brave, and loyal, and even enemies are made friends.  I especially love that last bit.  Rarely in video games do your enemies become your friends.  Also, when your characters die, they are removed for the rest of the game!  Permanent death leads you to care for your characters, because each and every character is important to you.  Sometimes you are even forced to make a choice resulting in the death of one or more of your party members.  Those humanistic qualities are the main reason I love the series.

I also love the gameplay!  The gameplay is simple to grasp, but quite difficult to master.  The rock, paper, scissors mechanic requires you to think ahead and plan out your missions.  You cannot simply go in with swords blazing (pun intended) on the harder difficulties and expect to win for long.  That's one reason I like playing it on Vizzed.  I can use save states to plan out my mission, learn about the enemies, then revert to my save file and start the mission over with the full picture in mind.

I feel the story is kind of hit or miss, but mostly hit.  The stories are rather bland, but are usually pretty good (like a bean burrito from Taco Bell), since they have great sauce to back them up (the gameplay and the characters).  One of my favorite animes, Oban Star-Racers, is somewhat lackluster in story, but more than made up for it with great characters and animation.  The story wouldn't have worked if it were not for these.

dvkbuddy10623 : What about the gameplay don't you like?

supernerd117 : Man, I can't tell you how much I enjoyed reading and agreed with your response! (I got the pun, epic win XD) Which storylines do you find rather bland, though? I've always enjoyed every Fire Emblem game I've played, though Shadow Dragon got old pretty quick (because I got Awakening lol).

You use savestates? Cheater, lol. I like to think I'm one of those who've mastered the gameplay, as I can generally play through any FE game without losing anyone, even games/hacks I've never played before.

dvkbuddy10623 : Providing you select the correct game mode, they don't come back. There are some games where they will come back, if you select the casual game mode, but they also have a classic option where dead people won't come back (assuming you're talking about allies)

I love so many things about this series!
First off, I love the characters. All of them have a deep back story, and not one character is the same as another. Every character is unique, and all of them have a story to tell! It makes me attached to them, which is why the Permanent-Death is a good thing in my opinion. You have to plan out how you are going to do each mission, or else you can lose a very valuable teammate.

The game play is pretty amazing, It's easy to learn but hard to master, and you need to plan out your attacks, defending, escorting missions, everything has to be planned perfectly, or else you lose a character or more, and even the chapter. Or you can be like me and make up plans on the fly while playing the chapters

The story is pretty good, for most games. It is a very rich and amazing story, and makes you indulged into the game, and makes you feel like you are actually going on the adventure with them.

The difficulty is good. It's challenging yet fair, although you can't expect to play it for a couple of hours and master it. It takes a long time to master the game, and this is for the easier games, like Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones.

I like the characters ad all of their unique personalities. Basically just kind of going off of what maguc said about it. All of them are unique and have their own story behind them. I think that really makes up a good portion of why I like the series so much. The gameplay itself is also very awesome, but it does take time to really become good at it and master it. You really have to plan things out well in advance before actually doing them.

And I agree that it is indeed rare to befriend your enemies and then they become an ally, that is very rare in many games, but this one is the exception. I just find that to be cool and unique about this game. So that's what I have to say on the matter.

mrfe : I guess what I meant wasn't that the stories are bland, but that the stories depend on the characters a lot.  The stories would be nothing without great, relatable characters.  The stories get us to care about the characters a lot, even the enemies.  If this were not so, then the stories would fall apart.  But the stories do seem to be somewhat formulaic at times.  You play as a lord or ruler of some sort, trying to defend and/or reclaim your kingdom.  Rewash, repeat.  Maybe I just haven't played enough Fire Emblem games, but this seems to be the formula, repeated throughout the games in different ways, sometimes original, sometimes giving us a feeling of Deja Vu.  While the plots are definitely more deep than Mario or Zelda (or pretty much any other Nintendo franchise except for maybe Metroid, at times) has ever shown, they seem to grow old at times while Mario still feels fresh, despite the recurring plot.  Maybe I just expect so much from Fire Emblem because I love it so much, I don't know.  It's not my favorite franchise, but I think the series gets you to care about the characters more than most others.  This puts it a cut above so many different series that expect you to hate your enemies, and make your characters disposable (i.e., extra lives, etc.  I'm looking at you, Mario.  Not that you're full of hate, but you are full of lives!).  I think I will always prefer Mario's gameplay over Fire Emblem's (I'm a platformer/adventure/puzzle (i.e. Trine, Zelda, Professor Layton) sort of guy), but Fire Emblem's plots and characters get you to think, I'll give it that.  Maybe FE: Awakening will get me to change my mind a bit (I haven't tried it out yet).  Until then.

I've always like games like chess. While you could argue that it's nothing like chess I like strategy aspect of it. Some of the main stuff in the game I like would probably be:

Gameplay - Unlike most RPG I really love this unique turn based and move system. This puts your strategical test to the test. This is probably the only time you'll her me say it but I enjoy the fight and move system more than Golden Suns basic RPG gameplay. It gives you something to master rather than just becoming a super high level and having the game become to easy for you.

Story and Characters - I really love medivalish themed characters and games. This was pretty much exactly what I was looking for. The characters are many things ranging from cool, brave and honorable like a knight or something along those lines.

Music - While it's not nearly as catchy as any other games I play the sound is just "good". It's epic to have music as bad@$$ as the one in this game play while you defeat your enemies. Imagine having this theme playing in your head and no other sound around you while playing something like chess https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLIZd7NpTbo. It's not catchy it's just, epic.

Well I've always loved turn-based rpg games and fire emblem is one at its best. I really like that fire emblem involves actual strategy rather than just making your characters extremely over powered so they can beat anyone. I also like that The enemy can actual attack you first rather than you always being the one to attack, adds even more strategic thinking into it. I also like the character design and the beautiful backgrounds in all the stages and cut scenes. Theres probably more but I'm to lazy to think

I love all the creative characters and the medieval theme. The story is always very interesting. The game play is also pretty addicting. It's pretty hard to narrow down why. I guess I like everything about it.

I like the supports for adding character depth to non-plot characters  , the perma-death for making me yell, and the level design.

To keep my answer short yet sweet. The characters are all very awesome to "get to know", the game play is hard but fun, I love the challenge to beat the game while getting and keeping all of the characters. Not only that but the way that the games have changed and grown over time has really been a great aspect to the series. Not to mention the ability to upgrade classes and feel you army develop as you continue with your game play. All in all the depth of the story the great way to play and the difficulty of the game are all wondrous aspects that have kept me a fan of Fire Emblem for years. ")

Fire Emblem is a very unique and challenging game series in general especially as a strategy type of game.

First of all, I like how all of the characters in general are part of the support system or storyline to determine the ending of the game once you finish it. It shows that each character has a different side of personality when it comes a certain person especially if two characters have a great friendship, great chemistry, and/or etc. If you are a person who likes to ship people together whether it would be a long lifetime friendship or relationship, you will have fun with the support system.

Second, I like how this game series is unlike any of the strategy games that I've played. The gameplay is based on pretty much war and most importantly, survival is the key. If you have characters that die, you can continue to move on with the game or try to save the amount of people who are your army and have the most survivors. I like to keep every single person in my army alive than to get a person killed. Maybe it's just me but everyone in the army makes the army itself stronger. Pretty much everyone is important in your tactics and strategy rather than just depending on one overpowered person to do all of the work. An army needs to have lots of people! and Fire Emblem makes this realistic (excluding the restarts in chapters in order to get your character(s) back to life).

Third, I like how Fire Emblem has its theme matching with its gameplay. Medieval times and armies go hand and hand and connect to each other.

Fourth, I love the soundtrack in the Fire Emblem series. It gets me pumped up for casual battles or dramatic and intense battles.

Lastly, I love when units have their own unique role or class. It makes them have more purpose and use in the game.

I agree with most of the people on here
The highlights being the characters and the game play
I care about each and every person I take into battle
And the combat itself it challenging and interesting
The story itself is generally pretty basic in outline
but the amazing depth in characters and dialogue push it and make it very rich and fulfilling plot altogether
