I don't think he was joking. I went and researched his older posts. He mentioned his struggles with leukemia several times.  He has ever since being here in May.

I highly doubt he'd carry on a joke for that long.

It makes me extremely sad to say that I think he was being honest, judging by the feel of his other posts and words.
