So I kind of hesitate to make this thread because I'm not sure exactly how much conversation can come of it. However, it's something I've ALWAYS been curious about, and nobody in my real life seems to have the same issue or even know much about it.  There are thousands of people here, so... maybe my chances will be a little better?

Alright.  I have..... ankles that crack.  When I say they crack, I mean they CRACK.  With EVERY step, you can here the 'click click click' of my ankles! It's the creepiest sound if you pay it any mind, and there's no way for me to stop it.  If I go up or down stairs, the sound is even louder.  It doesn't even sound like the crack of a normal person's foot, either.   Luckily, most people don't notice it thanks to the sounds that surround me (classroom, street, etc.).  But I've actually caused people to jump and freak out if I enter a quiet room.  It seems quite unnatural to me, and though I've tried to Google the problem, I've never really found anything on the issue.

It kind of worries me, because I wonder if this means I will have bad ankles when I'm older.  Does anyone know anything about this?  Do they have ankles or other bones that crack on a regular bases?  Cracking that they can't seem to prevent from happening?

I even went and filmed a very short video a few minutes ago to show you guys what I mean.  I had a very small space to walk in that was quiet, so I was taking small, slow steps.  My ankles as you hear them in this video are much quieter than usual.

Don't listen if you have a weak stomach. XD

I find doctor sites can explain things much better than I can, so here ya go: https://www.zocdoc.com/answers/5627/why-do-my-ankles-crack-so-much-and-what-can-help-prevent-this

Hope this helps you a bit.

As for me, I don't have any cracking bones, but sometimes when I flip my hand up and down, my wrist sort of groans. I don't think it is anything too serious, probably some stress on a tendon or something, which if it is, I should most definitely stop lol.

You say you looked on Google for some answers...I just think this may be a closer desscription of what you may be going through. If not, then I am sorry

Owowow... That sounds sort of unnerving, ha ha...

I've heard that creaking bones like this usually end up in arthritis, not to scare you. Well, it's sort of an overstatement to say "usually".

I used to have cracking ankles like this. A lot, actually. Every step was a cracking noise.

It usually ends up stopping sooner or later if you get a bit more active. Being a high school teacher, you have no problem. It ended for me.

It's usually "gases" that provide your cartilage "nutrients," from what I've heard from my doctor. Harmless.

Although, it can be early signs of arthritis or that your cartilage is weakened or damaged. Not that harmless.

I'm sure it's nothing. I bet it'll end like mine soon.

Sidewinder : I actually don't think that's my issue.  My joints aren't painful, don't resist movement, and don't just 'give way' either.  Thanks for the try, but I'm fairly certain it's just not that.

goodboy :  I've had this problem with my ankles all my life that I can remember.  So I doubt it's going away any time soon...

Singelli :

Well, there goes that idea. But I still doubt this is something to be worried about. I don't think you've had problems (other than the creaking) with your ankles. It's probably just some little thing that shouldn't be addressed.

Although, if you are skeptical, you should still ask your doctor. A 15 year old like me probably won't know much. XD

This is another thing we have in common. My feet used to do this. I even had someone comment on it before. Also, my back used to pop with the slightest contortion. The key words here are "used to". In my late twenties it miraculously stopped. However, I now have "premature Osteoarthritis". It is possible that you are having the early symptoms of this painful condition as well. I have had knee surgeries on both knees and it helped marginally. My back hurts and so do my feet, neck and hands. I believe that my issue was caused by a poor diet. Perhaps you can delay the onset of the pain (if you have this). Read more?

Singelli : Some people's joints crack almost all the time; you are by no means a rarity. It is call Crepitus as sidewinder's link mentions. It doesn't have to be painful or "give way"; crepitus is simply the name of cracks and crunches in the body. There are many possible reasons for crepitus, but if it is completely painless, there are chances that it's do to gas within your synovial cavity. When you bend or put pressure on the joint, the gas may be pushed around, but mostly the sound is from the gas being forced back into a liquid state (remember that the synovial cavity is filled with synovial fluid). Being right against the bone (except for a lay of cartilage), the sound resonates quite well.

It's not a "bad" thing necessarily. There could have been some mild injury that caused that, or just the way you were born. It is not impossible that such cracking may indicate that there will be more ware and tear on that joint, thus increasing the likelihood of OA in that joint... but there isn't enough correlation to say so for sure.

Singelli :
I think I might be able to provide some answers for you, if you don't mind giving me a little bit more info. Is that cracking/popping noise occurring as you're placing your foot back on the ground or when you're pushing off to take a step, or both? And when you do, is it the inside or outside of your foot?

I've seen this with a few patients, and it is not by any means something dangerous. One thing it could be is exactly what Light Knight said is with synovial fluid. I'll try to break this down and let me know if you have questions. Every joint in your body (fingers, shoulders, ankles, knees, etc...) have a fluid filled sac in it to lubricate the joint to make movements smooth and non-painful. Sometimes the fluid in these sacs can build up a little bit and when they quickly evaporate tend to make a popping sound just like that video. If that sounds funny, it's the same noise and the theory behind the cracking noise when people crack their knuckles, or with the cracking noise when people get treated by a chiropractor.

The other very common reason, is a tendon (attaches muscle to bone) may be moving around quickly over your ankle and makes that "snapping" sound as it is snapping into place. This happens often and is almost always due to genetics and how your body was put together. This is why I was wondering specifically where on your ankle/foot the popping is, because it can help us determine whether it's the joint space or a tendon moving.  If it isn't too awkward, you can try placing your hand over where exactly the popping is coming from and you may even be able to feel the tendon moving as it's about to make the sound. It can be due to past injury, but often it isn't.

Hope this is helpful and let me know if I can provide any more info or answer any more questions.

These guys are all painting this picture of death and decay of body parts and early onset arthritis.

I've worked in a gym long enough and I've seen enough injuries from an outpatient standpoint.  What you describe is most likely air passing through the ankle joints.  If you had tendons and ligaments inserting into your ankle or your fibula/tibia, and they were catching, you'd feel it.  It's be a ripping sensation and you'd fall down screaming in pain.  Same goes with the other items mentioned on here.  If you have pain or sharp sensations, there may be something wrong.  If you feel slight pressure and easement of the pressure as your ankle rotates and your foot moves, it's air.  It's not harmful and only a little uncomfortable.  If you're really worried, see a doctor.  They'll do an MRI or a CT scan and tell you the same.

Watch the skin around your ankles.  If you have discoloration, bruising, or feel tender to the touch, go see a doctor.

Otherwise it's air.  Your ankles crack the way some people's elbows or back crack when they do push-ups or pull-ups.  It's noise, no more.

My wrists crack and click every time I move them...You're not the only one with a problem like this I guess. It sounds exactly like the video. I'm a little worried now too! D: Well, at least we can be "Bad jointed buddies" though.

I'm really glad you all chimed in and gave me this information. I've always just thought I was entirely strange. I've never met anyone that had ankles that crack like mine, or ... for that matter... ANY bones that crack like mine from normal every day use.  I wonder why it is that it happens to me.. whether it's an air socked or the liquid or... whatever.  I'm also guessing that due to its nature, it's not something that can be helped or prevented.  That's kind of a bummer, but if it isn't damaging my joints, I suppose I don't have much cause to be upset about it.

mikez913 :  What is it that you do for a living?  I really appreciate your interest and info.  The cracking noise happens as I lift my foot up, and it's always on the outside ankle.

Scratch that. I always assumed it was on the outside, but I just tried walking some right now, and it seemed like it could be coming from the inside. Then I wrapped my hands around my ankles and tried taking a few steps.  Of course, they were being stubborn and not wanting to pop because I was trying to investigate.... but it FELT like the only muscle or tendon snapping was actually in the FRONT of my foot.

So I just don't know how to answer the question at the moment.

mikez913 :  Thanks so much for sharing your wealth of knowledge!

Now, before anyone starts bombarding him, I do want to point out that you can NEVER ever take someone's online advice as a diagnosis... no matter what their level of education or experience is.

mikez913, I'm not sure what else I can offer for the situation since I can't tell where the 'snapping' is coming from.  You and the others here have certainly made me feel better about it though.  I think I don't have to stress about it so much... I just never meet anyone with the same problem!

Is there anyone on vizzed who has joints that regularly creak like my ankles do?

Singelli :
I'm going to follow up this point, because it is crucial (and great insight on your part). No two people will ever have the same exact injury/illness. While the diagnosis may be the same, how it affects people individually is completely different. If you're ever unsure, see a doctor. If you go back and read any of my posts in any of the health threads, you'll see I never say "you have _____, and this is what you need to do". All I'm doing is (hopefully) providing some background info wherever I can. If you're concerned, make an appointment with your doctor. The best doctors in the world will not diagnose/treat you over a message board or a phone call - it's understood how dangerous this can be without a full physical exam.

Wow... Ouch.,.. Ehh.... lol. Thats kinda scary for me... This never happened to me but it scares me. I'm not much of a health expert so I don't know what to say and I don't want to accidentally provide you with incorrect info so its better if I don't say anything... I just want to wish you luck Singelli! Good luck with this weird cracking bones stuff!

That really sounds like it hurts. I am feeling pain judt by reading the description! This is reallt weird though.

Sometimes my wrists click when I move them. Other times when I sleep I tend to move my foot back and forth and my ankle clicks. It is weird and I don't know why it is like that.

Thank you for sharing this even though it sounds painful!

At least mikez913 is wise and he has lots of knowledge to shed upon the topic. Hopefully he can help you out!

My mom has a lot of priblems with her ankles and feet as well. Just thought I would put it out there.
