Hello again. I'm back with this review of Beyond Good and Evil HD. Review is posted below:
A lot of hype went into this game before its release. When some gamers heard that it was going to be created by the same man behind Rayman, they jumped for joy. Yet the game failed to sell well. However, the game was recently released in HD, so many gamers flocked to pick it up at only about $10. I assure you that the game is a steal.
Story:
The game is largely story-driven, centering around a 20-year old reporter named Jade and her search for the truth behind the "Alpha Sections", a group that claims to protect the people, but is suspected by the underground IRIS network of secretly assisting the antagonists, the DomZ. These DomZ are a race of alien creatures that seek to abduct people to sustain there life energy. Jade joins the IRIS network with her pig-headed (literally) uncle Pey'j as they seek to stop the DomZ and uncover the truth behind the Alpha Sections.
Controls:
The controls feel just great, although combat is simplistic. The X button is used to attack, and A to dodge. Photo mode is entered by holding the left button, and a picture is taken by using the right button.
Graphics:
The graphics in the game look fantastic, but have definitely aged despite their HD coating. Jade in particular looks great and emotes well, yet other characters are not as defined, and their expressions can come across as bland. However, this doesn't hamper the experience too much. As for the rest of the graphics, there is a hiccup here or there, but nothing that gets in the way of the fun.
Sound:
I'll break this into two parts: music and general sound.
Music: The music in particular does a good job of setting the mood of the game, or in other words, there is not too much of it, unlike Sonic Adventure/Sonic Adventure 2. The music is minimalistic and contributes to the environments and excitement of the game.
General Sound: The voice acting is superb. The voice actors did a great job of conveying the emotions and ideas in their voices that they wanted to portray. It's too bad that the voices don't match the faces very well. I hope that a future port will fix this.
Depth/Addictiveness:
The game is split into two sections: Overworld map, and dungeons, not unlike a Zelda game. However, the implementation is somewhat different. The overworld map is traversed either in a hoverboat, or on foot. The dungeons you can access are usually those that relate to the plot, although there are a few bonus dungeons that are unlocked by discovery, which usually requires an upgrade to your hovercraft. These upgrades are purchased using pearls that are earned by taking pictures, through the main story line, or finding/earning them in dungeons. The picture mechanic adds a whole lot of depth to the game, and much of the game revolves around sneaking past guards and taking pictures. Also, for every 10 unique pictures of animals, you get a pearl, up to 6 pearls.
Overall:
I suggest this game for anyone wanting to experience a good plot, and get a lot of bang for their buck. You will most likely want to play through the game again once you've finished.
