What is the most difficult game you have you have ever played? A game that beats you down and laughs in your face! For me its Contra Hard Corps for the Sega Genesis. I can't even get past the first dang level! I have played many hard games on the Genesis but Contra really takes the cake as the hardest for me.

Ninja Turtles 1. for the N.E.S.
Without "save states" that game will make anyone a looser.

I am certain there are harder games out like the zelda 2 hack "Shadow of the night."
But

For me it would have to be Final Fantasy III. The sheer amount of grinding required is immense.

Hardest game overall? Probably Contra on the NES. I actually did manage to beat it as a kid, but that was with help AND the 40 life cheat. Recently I tried it again after about twenty years, and even with the the forty life cheat, I died in the second level, on my best run. lol Sad, but true. I will finish it again one day. :p

I wanted to say Shadow dancer because of Sauros, because I have actually lost 30+ lives on that last bit before. Talk about Rage. lol But other than that, the game's a breeze.

And none of this is counting those old games with controls that were so impossible they made you quit on the first level. Just games that offered a high level of difficulty in the AI. Don't get me started on the others *cough*double dragon*cough*.

i dont really move around though alot of game series, so this might seem lame to the rest of you. but the hardest game i have ever played would probably be Metroid Prime 2. or perhaps the minigames on The Bigs 2 for the Wii

   RPG's aren't really hard in terms of "talent" it's usually about preparation and set-ups. For example 7th saga is notorious for its difficulty but it's not that hard of a game... if you are properly leveled. It's just unbalanced. The game actually gets to easy as long as you are leveled up. Old NES games need lightning fast reflexes, good memory and patience. Way tougher than any RPG i have played. (Dragon Warrior 2 comes to mind as a tough RPG)

Turtles 1 for NES is up there, I have not beat it without stocking up all turtles with the scroll weapon. I would have to put Ninja Gaiden 3, Adventure Island 1 and Battletoads ahead though.

Darius Twin for SNES is nearly impossible, it took my friend and I an actual year to beat it. The last level is just ridiculous. But we did beat it.

Spiderman & Venom in Maximum Carnage for SNES  is tough. Boss fights are really hard. I can't beat it.  I can't do it....

Probably the hardest game I ever played was Battletoads. I wasn't able to pass the 3rd level without save states. And even with save states I wasn't able to beat level 11. 

Also the original Castlevania is really hard for me. I can't beat the boss on the 4th level.

Battletoads in Battlemaniacs for the Super Nintendo. I have never beaten the game, only gotten far as the bike level. Haven't played it since as the copy I had got stolen years ago.

I've played a ton of games since the Atari. But right off of my head I'm going to have to go with learning to play GUITAR HERO for the first time, there was songs I got stuck on and played for hours until I got them lol Now I can play any of them on expert behind my HEAD lol
