I know it was just a rip off of another game, and that the lost levels was the original smb2, but that doesn't mean it isn't good. I like it alright, even if it isn't as good some of the others. Plus, it was a different experience than The first smb. That's what I like most about it. What do you think? Please explain why you do or don't like it.

Yeah, I do like SMB2 U.S. because it's different than most other Mario games and it isn't TOO difficult. The bosses are rather simple. I do think it sucks that it was ripped off of another game (I think it was called Doki Doki Panic or something), but I still like the game a lot. Also, I don't like the Lost Levels version because it's really hard and I get frustrated with it a lot.

PacmanandMariofan : Yeah, I personally liked this better than the lost levels, because Lost Levels was the same as the first one, with added difficulty. Not to say Lost levels is a bad game, I just didn't care for it personally.

owlsarecool : Yeah it was alot different. I imagine it threw alot of people off. This was nothing like Mario Bros. It was kind of a brave (or dumb) move on Nintendo's part, but it worked out.

I really liked it, It was a difficult game and it was a a unique game as well. (that's because of Doki Doki Panic and I'm sure that you know that tale)

So, yes it was a good game.

GameBoy1023 : Yeah, you just have to wonder who actually came up with the idea. It was odd to say the least. Still, I loved this game as a kid. I still like it actually.

I really liked SMB2 regardless of the fact that it was a rip-off game. It's still fun to play.

I personally like how they made it into a dream that Mario had. Hope that isn't a spoiler for anyone . I just thought it was sort of a unique way to get around how different the game was. I have no idea if that part was intentional or not but for me that makes the different game style not nearly as important.

Hidden Phantom : Lol true enough. I haven't played the other one since I was a kid, but I remember it being pretty hard. You can only throw a controller so many times before you get tired of playing.

goeeogree : Is that how it ends?? Darn, now I might as well quit playing. lol Nah, I finished it way back when. I thought the dream part was cool too. I always enjoy a surprise ending.

And was it me, or did the desert levels have a bit of a dig-dug feel to them? You know, when you warped down the giant pots?

Eirinn : I have tried explaining this several times to people on this site. SMB2 is NOT a bad game, it just get's a bad rap because a few popular reviewers on the internet gave it a bad rap. Similar to the original TMNT on NES.

First off, SMB2 (Japan Version) is nothing more than a rehash of the original. Same music, basically the same levels. The only huge difference is the Poison Mushroom. I think Nintendo realized this when it came time to release a game in the US, and knew that US gamers (and parents) back then wouldn't like spending 60 bucks on basically the same game. I'm sure people would be angry about it. I know I would have been.

Sure it was heavily borrowed from Doki Doki panic, but you know what? NO BODY CARED ABOUT THAT GAME BACK THEN or ever even heard of it. So who really cares?

It was a fun game that brought a whole bunch of new stuff to the Mario franchise. Bright vibrant colors that better showed off what the NES could do, great music and fun gameplay. What's really to complain about?

In that regard it seems like less of a ripoff to me than releasing basically the same exact game just with added difficulty.

Jordanv78 : Yeah, I agree completely. The Japan version was too much of a clone for me. It has some differences, but to me it just felt repetitive. Our SMB2 was really no more of a rip of another game than the Japan version was of the first Mario.

Its not a bad game, it has terrific level design and fun gameplay. Its better then the orignial SMB2 in my opinion. Compared to SMB, and SMB 3, its not the greatest game, but its a lot better then most NES games.

The title and the poll have different questions. The title is 'SMB2 Is it really that bad?" and the poll says "Do you like SMB2?" That may confuse someone. Yes, I do like SMB2. It is a very unique game (or at least it is a port of one) and it has amazing music.

Super Mario Bros 2 is not a bad game, but it has it's problems. It immediately alienates those who loved the first game by presenting a completely different gameplay style; sure it is still a platformer, but it's based around picking things up.
I actually like the Japanese Super Mario Bros 2 (Lost Levels) and appreciate the challenge, despite it not being any different from the first game within it's mechanics.

I don't think to my point of view that SMB. 2 (U.S. version) wasn't really that bad, it was hard to beat the game and what not, but all together, it was a pretty good game.

Yes, I actually do. It's different from most Mario games, but it's still playable enough to give some entertainment. I like SMB2:LL (Lost Levels) more, though.

Even though I've found out, That Super Mario brothers 2 was a texture swap of Doki doki panic, I was a bit dissapointed, but In general I still continued to play the game, because it's fun addicting and I just prefer the new and fresh style.. Trust me, i get tired of playing the old bowser style games..

I have no problem with the US version of Mario Bros 2. It might be very different from the previous game it had, but it brought many faces of enemies from the game, its worth to play, and to remember.
