From recent episodes we do know that he will live longer than the average time lord. I guess the directors panicked when they realized that they were on the last doctor and they had to come up with something good so that the most popular Si-Fi TV wouldn't end so soon.

It’s all up to the producers, if they feel they have enough demand and ideas for the show, they will pull a few strings in order to keep the show up for another couple of years. I personally don’t want the show to end.

Thank goodness this has mostly been resolved. I'm glad they explained that the new Doctor (Peter Capaldi), in the episode "Time of the Doctor", was part of a new cycle of regeneration. So hopefully, this means that they plan for the show to continue on for some time. Doctor Who is the best science fiction to ever come from the United Kingdom, in my opinion.

I do not think that Doctor Who will ever come to an end because there are endless possibilities for the show. I have not watched the old 1st-9th generations, but I have seen my share of the newer ones.

I've seen most of the newer (last 5 or more seasons) episodes and like others have said as long as the popularity is there they can always just write something in.  I haven't seen the most recent season (the last with Matt Smith) awesome doctor btw but it sounds as if they wrote something up so we can keep enjoying some good ole' Scifi.
