*One day CJBO was passing by the newbie forum, and he was like: "my my, discussion on video game being bad influence", and so his revolutionary spirit of layernessness came afloat*

Well, guitar hero is far away from the real thing, but it does leaves a concept of what the real thing should be like, that said remember guitar hero is a game, real guitar is used for music created by the musician, for making art, so the difference radicates in what you want to do, play a game, or make music, also, and important fact is lazyness, for guitar hero you only need a console the toy guitar and the game (plus tv, electricity and such things to play), and that's it, for the real thing you need dedication and preparation, someone can BE influenced by guitar hero to go pro and say:"Hey, why not try the real deal", but easier said than done, from that point on you have to train, practice, learn, experience, and so on, and so forth.

In my opion (and conclusion), guitar hero may open the door and show the way (of the guitar) to someone (not EVERYONE) but it's up to yerself to wlak through the door and follow the way (of the guitar(again)).

PS: want some food?

Guitar Hero is never going to result in people not playing guitar. That just doesn't make sense. No one who would have actually been dedicated enough to learn and play the guitar is going to decide "no, I'll just play this game with colored little buttons and never make my own music. It's just the same!" because it isn't.

But on the other side of it, there are definitely people who will have fun playing the game and go out and pick up a guitar. Obviously not all of them are going to stick with it, but more people trying the guitar is going to lead to more people playing it. Never the reverse. There would be someone who might not have picked up a guitar otherwise but then once they did they fell in love.

In addition to that, the games have a lot of good music in them, especially older songs that kids might not have discovered on their own, or at least not as soon. It can serve as a good starting point for someone to find good music. If they like a song in the game, they can look up the band and the album and buy it. Then BAM, we have kids with better music taste than they would have had otherwise.

Man, this could just about have been a thread all it's own. Talk about a thread being hijacked/sidetracked/going way off-topic.

THAT sounds like my cue! :3

There's a negative effect if someone is dedicating time to guitar hero instead of real guitar. Also, guitar isn't the only instrument and a person could also be like: "wow, this game is cool, it's almost like playing guitar. It's way better than learning tuba"

and did anyone check the link in my last post?

and about introductory threads going off topic, i think my "hello" thread was like 50 posts (3 pages) long, and it lasted well over a month

It isnt't the same as someone dedicating time to guitar hero instead of the guitar, though. Guitar Hero is a video game, and most kids would just be spending a lot more time playing another game instead of guitar.

Though I do admit I've thought in the past that what with all the playing of guitar hero and rock band I've done I could have learned a real instrument. But I've tried real instruments and they're much harder and I don't care to put in the time to learn it. Except maybe drums if I had a kit. I have guitars that go to waste because I try to play them and can't and get frustrated and go play WoW or something instead. It has nothing to do with Guitar Hero, really. It's a video game. It is completely different from real guitar.

And no, I highly doubt a kid would drop tuba to play guitar hero, because again, tuba is a real instrument and if they're playing it because they want to and not because mom and dad are making them play an instrument that is NOT going to happen.

I did check your link, ziggy, but I forgot to comment on it. That game could be awesome indeed, depending on the execution. I think the point a lot of people miss with Guitar Hero and Rock Band is that they are rhythm games and not a sub for learning to actually do something, and they don't and never have claimed to teach a real instrument.

Seriously, the people who play tons of GH or RB are basically akin to those who play countless Call of Duty or World of Warcraft. It's what they're into, playing an instrument isn't.
