We all know about those folks in PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and their crusade for liberating all animals from human "oppression". Agree with them or disagree with them all you want, one thing is absolutely factual: They kill far more animals than they save. Since 1998, PETA has been gathering animals from abusive owners or liberating them from farms or other such things. They object to animals being used in scientific research, even if this research is for AIDS or cancer.

In all of their efforts, and between massive media attention and large public donations, PETA has managed to successfully adopt around 3,000 - 4,000 animals. They have killed 25,000 - 30,000 animals. Yes, instead of using their massive amounts of funds to find good homes for all these strays, they realize, "Hey, sheltering these pets and feeding them is really expensive." So what do they do? They euthanize all the unwanted pets.

And another interesting piece of info, PETA objects to all animal research, and have specifically said that if experimenting on an animal would cure cancer, they would still object to it. But the funny thing is: Their leader, Ingrid Newkirk, is a diabetic. She uses insulin. Insulin that is tested on animals.

yeah, I knew about this for a while.

The group is a bunch of hypocrites. Ethical treatment of animals... but they kill more than they save.... by 10 times.

I love how owning a pet and keeping it inside is unethical. However, if I were to release it into it's "natural" environment then that would be better. Except that the animal would die within days/weeks of being released instead of living a long life.... makes no sense to me.

I've known about this for many years now. As an animal rights activist and a vegan people often 'accuse' me of being a PETA supporter (even though I have no affiliation with them?). But I dislike them a lot and do not support their work. They are basically a huge waste of money.

What you also have to keep in mind is MOST animal shelters, unless they are speficially a no-kill shelter, euthanize most animals surrendered to their care if they are not adopted within a set amount of time. It is a sad reality- Too many people breed pets and there are not enough homes for unwanted animals. Don't breed or buy while animals in shelters die!

geeogree : Personally I feel that letting your cat outside is like letting your child roam the streets. Obviously cats have a survival instinct and children do not, but you take a risk every time you let your cat out unsupervised. They are susceptible to traffic, strangers (potential animal abusers), predatory wildlife, other people's dogs, and so on. In most urban areas where people live it is completely UNsafe for a cat to be outside, mainly because of cars.

However in rural areas cats can survive if there is enough prey (usually there will be) and can live in the wild. There are many feral cats in my area that return frequently, some for years if they are getting enough food in the area, and they appear completely healthy.

The same cannot be said for any other pet. These animals are domesticated, bred in captivity, and need our care, whether PETA likes it or not.

geeogree : Yeah, exactly. Apparently they think that if an animal cannot live a normal life in its natural environment, it is better off dead. They've compared farm animal's suffering to that of holocaust victims and the like. They think they're doing the animals a favor.

Annette : I've read about many vegans/vegetarians who oppose PETA and make it very clear that they're not associated with them at all. PETA mostly gets in the way of people who rescue animals from REAL danger and limit their progress. They give animal activists bad names, as I've been guilty of comparing the two, but I didn't know how different they were at the time. There should be Public Service Announcements about this. People need to know the difference. Then again, the problem is mostly rooted in the people to cause animal abuse in the first place.

Annette : I agree. I hate seeing cats out in the street or in yards. Cats that live in cities should stay inside. They may be able to survive outside for a while.... and many do for a long time.... but I think it's unfair to the pet to put them at that kind of risk.

Sephitard9001 : yeah.... it's really over the top crap. Thankfully the majority of people who hear about PETA and know anything realize how stupid and over the top they are.

Doesn't surprise me. I have never liked PETA because of how hypocritical they are, and this is just more proof.

Anyone remember their attempt to rename fish (all fish) "Sea Kittens"... what a joke!

Elara : Ha, really? Wow, I'll have to look into that. I've never even heard about that. What were they high on? On a second thought, you should've seen this lady's will (Ingrid Newkirk). It included all sorts of things like having her skin made into purses and her meat barbecued . . . It's pretty disturbing. http://www.peta.org/features/Ingrid-Newkirks-Unique-Will.aspx This isn't even a joke, this comes directly from PETA!

I was unaware of this. Seeing as how most of those who commented have heard of this, could you perhaps provide the source of this information?

NotJon : There is a website, but the title might make you think it's biased - http://www.petakillsanimals.com/ But make sure to look at the link on that page that says, "Skeptical? Click here to see the proof." This will show you a .pdf from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services's online animal reporting. But there's a handy chart above the link that summarizes it anyway.

I saw an interview with a PETA member. The lights were low so you couldn't see his face in the interview because he went undercover at a chicken processing plant. He had hidden cameras doing cruel and messed up things to the chickens as they were hanging by their feet alive. I get the point, but all I could think of was the fact that he still got himself hired in a slaughterhouse and had to partake in the chicken killing process......... I guess in his mind, he killed chickens for the greater good.......seems kind of counterproductive to me.

rcarter2 : Oh no, of course it's okay for THEM. No matter what they say is wrong, they can do it because they're fighting for the animal's rights. Pfft, hypocrisy isn't a strong enough word to describe these people.

I don't know much about PETA and didn't know about this either... But really I'm not too shocked. Most charities are scams as well. Those kids in africa probably see 1 cent out of a dollar donated.

I am on their site now and apparently they like porn advertising lol. I wonder if they have protested against all those people who rape animals.

This is also interesting...

"What we want is for the population of dogs and cats to be reduced through spaying and neutering and for people to adopt animals from pounds or animal shelters—never from pet shops or breeders—thereby reducing suffering in the world."

Excuse me? Neutering a pet is not nice how would you like it if your balls got cut off? What makes them think a petshop is nicer then a pound when your stuck in a cage like a zoo animal?

"PETA does not want to confiscate animals who are well cared for and "set them free."

In other words, they could care less about animals, just as long as they are tortured they can turn a profit and still be in business.

JigSaw : That's pretty much a summary of their entire organization. They must be pretty crafty to make cash off of animal abuse.  I've heard that Ingrid Newkirk's teacher/mentor thinks sex with animals is okay, but that is just a rumor I've heard. I'm not sure if it's true or slander, but it wouldn't surprise me really

The animal sex is probably true.

They're all nut cracked, bat s**t insane morons who don't have brains or morality of their own.

They encourage killing animals to save animals, not eating meat, but eating PEOPLE as protest, to liberate all domestic animals from their owners, yet they keep them in strongholds, they don't want testing on animals, but yet they do the same, sheerly for the fun of it. They constanly contradict themselves!

"As part of its anti-fur action, PETA members have infiltrated hundreds of fashion shows in the U.S, Europe, and once in China, throwing red paint on the catwalks, and unfurling banners."

How do we know that the red paint was not tested on animals?

They now have a website about KFC, we all know that place isn't kind to animals, but they are making some lies about them.

They made another website about Nestea, of all things. They are saying that a juice company cuts the leg muscles out of mice and force feeds them their tea. That, I know is complete BS. http://www.nesteacrueltea.com/Default.aspx

They are eco-terrorists though, what should you expect?

They are eco-terrorists though, what should you expect?

alexanyways : That's a lot of information to take in at once, but isn't most of the stuff they do illegal? I'm pretty sure throwing paint and breaking into farms/labs is against the law. Isn't this organized crime or domestic terrorism? They try to frighten people into accept their way, and 90% of their campaign is targeted at children.
