Hmmm scariest movie? Well if we're going with all time, then I need to think long and hard on this one. Now if you want something that ACTUALLY scared me, I would have to say What Lies Beneath, Paranormal Activity and The Blair With Project. If you want to go with amazing story-line then I would have to say, A Nightmare On Elm Street (original version), Halloween 1&2 (original versions) and The Grudge (both the american and japanese  versions). If I think of anymore I'll post it in a later reply.

The 1984 Nightmare on Elm Street film scared the crap out of me as a kid. D:
Halloween (original) also scared me. Can't think of any other film that scared me.

I too have watched horror movies for as long as I can remember. They have been my favorite genre for over 20 years. Although, most modern ones seem to think good horror movies is scary/spooky images that all the time. I miss the ones that the story alone can scare the crap out of you that it didn't matter that their special effects weren't the computer generated and didn't rely on fancy camera work. I would say that one movie that still makes me get that numb feeling is the original Night of the Demons. Not the sequels or that dumb remake they did recently. For people who get scared by modern horror movies, turn the lights off, watch that movie (again, the original), and you will probably pause it about halfway through to turn the lights on for a little bit. Warning, the dialogue is kind of bad because it was made in 1969 or something. So ignore than, and make sure you don't drink a lot of water before watching it.

I don't know whether you'd count this film as horror/thriller, but Terry Gilliam's Tideland scared me. It's not jump out at you scary, nor is there scary creatures, or anything of the sort. While you watch, you worry about the main character, Jeliza-Rose. The world is a dangerous place, but she doesn't see this at all. The world is magical to Jeliza-Rose.

I suppose the film isn't a horror or a thriller, but it succeeds in getting under your skin and making you incredibly uncomfortable and emotional. I think the main feeling for me was insecurity, watching this film. It's an experience though, nonetheless.

SLouC : I never saw Tideland, so I don't know what it is about. But from what you said about it and what it makes you feel, I think the genre you were trying to think for this movie is a suspense film. No reason for this, just came to mind when I read your post.

rcarter2 :
Hm, usually I'd associate suspense with films containing more action, probably why I didn't think of it ^^
But suspense certainly works..
Actually, arguably psychological thriller may too on second thought.

"The Descent"  scared the mess out of me.  The first half is all is physiological occurrences that do happen, and the second half is...well, just plain terrifying.  Watch it in a dark room for sure.

I have been watching horror flicks for over 30 years so I've become somewhat desensitized. But I'll mention of few....at the age of ten I watched Humanoids from the Deep and I had nightmares for weeks. In my teens it was the Nightmare on Elm Street series that I enjoyed. Today I like the Saw films and one of my favorites is Hostel and Hostel II, although the first one was way better. Oh almost forgot.....who can forget the Hellraiser movies? Good times!

My favorite scary movie would have to be Paranormal Activity 2.  It was very scary and very interesting to see what was coming their way.
