I do not like when they do it unless it is actually important. Also, people get killed all the time doing this kind of stuff they are looking down so run a red light and get T boned as far as laws go it really won't help. Laws were just made to be broken. (Sarcasm)

Making this a law would help to some extent, but I would believe that most people wouldn't care about it and continue to do it, while others might actually stop it. It IS already illegal in California.

I don't think it's enforceable, but I do think it's dangerous. There's videos of people walking while texting and they crash into walls or fountains or poles, so if they can't even walk, imagine them driving. I think it's the second worst thing after being inebriated to impair your driving skills. I'm not saying that everyone who texts will get in accident, just like everyone who drives while drunk doesn't get in an accident, but it significantly raises the risk. I'm not sure how the government or any organization could do anything about it, except inform people of the hazards and try and let people know that they aren't so bloody important that they need to reply "lol letz get drunk 2nite" the second they get a text about something. If it's really important, they would call, and if you answer and it's not an emergency, you can tell them to wait. Well, this is just my personal opinion on it, but then again I'm not very confident in my (or others) driving abilities at all.

There is no such thing as a text that is more important than your life and the lives of others around you. I don't see any reasonable excuse.

I think it's an okay law to observe, since it is a distraction. If you're distracted by a cell phone, or anything else, you're gonna lose focus, and you will get in damage. Bluetooth all the way.

I agree that the idea is largely political in nature. It doesn't truly solve the problem, but it does seem to help slightly. If people were made more aware of the consequences, I think text-related accidents would happen less often, but that would be a difficult point to get across. Any law is at least somewhat enforceable, but I don't think we're even coming close to catching half of the people who text while driving, let alone all of them.

I think that a law banning texting and driving would be great. I am a little biased though because a woman pulled right out in front of me today and her eyes never left her cell phone. She never saw me coming.
Although this would be a good law, I think talking on your cell phone is fine becasue your eyes can stay glued to the road. If you ban talking while driving, than any other distracting activities would have to be banned to be fair, like eating/drinking. I dont think anyone wants a law like that. But a law restricting activities that you are required to look at (like texting) would be great.
This law would be almost impossible to enforce though.

How much of our daily lives do we need to have legislated? Now I'm being told when I can use my cell phone. What next? I can only imagine that radios are going to be removed from cars because they are a distraction. Maybe passengers should go too because I've seen parents almost cause accidents trying to deal with their kids.

Texting and talking should be illegal. Let's look at the discussion so far:

1. Radio is distracting, friends are distracting, texting is distracting: Ban all three!

You don't have to ban a radio and it is distracting. But if we remove one more distraction, texting, then fewer people will be killed in car accidents. An exciting game on the radio takes my attention but not the way texting would.

2. It's not enforceable

It is. In my state it's illegal to talk or text unless you're hands-free. Cops pull people over and ticket them. The ticket is a punishment for doing something that potentially could injure people.

3. I can text at eye-level and it's safe

Maybe. Or maybe you don't notice the little kid that is running into the street to get the ball and darts between the cars. If you're looking at a phone, you'll see big objects, cars, trucks, stop lights, but you'll miss the small ones, like bikers, children, and you have no peripheral vision while you focus in front of you. This is saying it's safe to read a newspaper while driving or apply eye makeup while driving. You're not looking at the road.

4. People would do it anyway but at lap level

Well, you could (a) not break the law and either pull over to text or wait a few minutes. Texts aren't that important anyway. 15 years ago somehow the world survived without texting. Or (b) people do it but fewer people do it. If you stop one person from texting while driving because of the illegal thing, the road is safer. End of story. It's about safety and it's about my taxes not going up to pay for uninsured drivers getting hit by people texting.

Lastly, a majority of texting drivers are kids who don't have a tremendous amount of experience driving safely with NO distractions. Add something like that in there and accidents go up. Heck, if people can safely text, who's to say drivers aren't on Facebook posting while driving. I wonder how many accidents are caused doing that.

I say its a bad idea. Talking may be O.K if you are responsible, but texting is impossible. You have to use both hands to text. Using one hand while driving AND not looking at the phone is literally impossible.
