http://tech.ca.msn.com/article.aspx?cp-documentid=26127299

now I personally am not all that sad about this because I thought limewire was more of a place where people tried to scam each other rather than a real place to find music and movies and such.... but it is a blow to the people that push for file-sharing.

So what does everyone else think about this?

$1,000,000,000?

Really?

Ha, that's what they get for making money off of other peoples work. May the creators burn in everlasting fire.

I feel sorry for the CEO's family.

"The statutory minimum for music copyright infringement is $150,000 per infringement"

That is the line that scares me the most.... any normal person can't pay that and most businesses like this one will be destroyed pretty easily. Way over the top with that sort of a reaction.

geeogree : I think it's great they finally shut that illegal program down because I don't own an Ipod of any sort..so I have no purpose for limewire. Besides, I didn't think anyone used limewire anyway..I thought the new thing was You Tube. Guess not. It doesn't matter anyway if it's closed...people will just find a new site to illegally download music from.....so it really makes no difference.

YourMajestyKen : I completely agree. Limewire isn't used much anymore and the fact that it is gone isn't a big loss.

More and more people are using torrent sites or much less known programs to get their music. I could probably get more music from an FTP site than I could through Limewire and it's almost impossible to stop FTP sites from popping up.

What shocks me is that the Pirate Bay is still up. I thought they got sued, like, 2 billion dollars and shut her down. But I just recently downloaded the most recent Bleach episode from there.

Peer to peer sites are all the rage these days. BeeMp3, Mp3Raid, etc. etc. are used several thousand times a day. It's not long before they're shut down (hopefully).

the_casualty : torrent sites generally don't make money though. They provide a place to exchange files but are kept going by donations and not by selling memberships or anything like that. Sure they are still providing opportunities to exchange copy-righted files, but at least they aren't making money of that material.

I personally wouldn't pay for 90+% of what I download. Doesn't make it right but most of the stuff I watch or listen to would reach 1 fewer viewer if I couldn't get it for free.

I don't use Limewire all that much any more, and the only thing mentionable that I've ever gotten from it was a virus. I've had to delete it a couple of times for that very reason. So I say, good ridance!

SilverMaestro : That's precisely my opinion of LimeWire. My husband and I had a roommate who installed it (without permission) on Mr. Oniya's laptop, and it was a mess to get all the malware off.

geeogree : I have used Limewire for a couple of years… The only thing that annoyed me about it was when you would be doing a search for an 80s song by Tears for Fears or something like that it would come up with links for porn videos and such and then the audio at the bottom.

It got really annoying after a while. The other thing that was annoying about it was that sometimes you would download what you would think was a song and it would download in less than a second and when you clicked the file to test the download it would come up with an audio ad for some website that no one’s ever heard of…

I eventually started using Blubster for my music downloads. I do wish that WinMX was still around though. But I paid for a lifetime premium of Blubster so I rarely have any problems with that when I do burn CDS. I have a bunch of tracks on my PS3 that I put on there as a mini jukebox so I haven’t downloaded anything to burn to a disc in quite a while but then again, it’s been months until a week ago that I had a PS3 that worked properly.

If people want to know a good source for learning about new bands that you might like, I'd recommend Pandora. You can't save anything off of it (to my knowledge), but you put in the names of bands you do like and then it plays those as well as similar bands. Then, you can tag those individual songs as 'like' or 'don't like', and it evolves from there.

I'm a bit sad, considering that Limewire was basically a god for downloading music, but there was WAY too much risk for porn and viruses on there. But as long as they don't shut down ThePirateBay I'm good.

This doesn't really affect me at all, as I hardly use the website at all. Howewer, I know a few people whom I'd like to break the news to dramatically.

Limewire had too many viruses and malware you can never tell even if you scan the file with an antivirus program before opening it.

I used to use it at my cousin's house. However, I love CDs too much so I started using them and buying them. Now, I stick mostly to Youtube and Grooveshark if I want to hear music online. Outside of that, I'm usually listening to my MP3 player (strictly with songs copied from my CDs).
